Yasopp,[6] known as "Chaser",[3] is one of the Senior Officers and the sniper of the Red Hair Pirates.[7] He is also the father of Usopp[8] and the widower of Banchina.[9]

Appearance[]

His appearance is very similar to his son, Usopp. However, he does not share the same long nose and has blond hair, the former being a hereditary trait of Usopp's mother, as well as her darker shade of hair.[8] Twenty years ago, Yasopp had the same tight curls and black hair as Usopp,[10] and in Romance Dawn, his hair was styled in loose waves,[11] but later appearances show him with it in dreadlocks. In addition to that, his body was slimmer while in his latest appearance,[2] it seems to have become more muscular.[12]

His name was written on his headband,[2] while in his latest appearance, he has no headband, and his name is written on his upper right arm.[12] During his time in Foosha Village, he wore a dark-blue shirt, dark-green pants reaching down to his calves, and blue shoes with buckles on them. He donned his headband at this time.[2] At Marineford, he sports a dark A-shirt, short pants, standard boots, and a large belt with a bag attached to it. There is also a little necklace around his neck. He retains his trademark star-patterned cape, and he has his rifle attached to his back via a band.

Personality[]

I miss him too. But I cannot help him because of one reason, the pirate flag has called me to stand up to this point!
— Yasopp on his son[2]

He shares many personality traits with his son, including being able to encourage the rest of his crew to join in with his fun. He is very proud of his son, Usopp, to the point where he would often talk about his son over and over again to Luffy, which led Luffy to recognize Usopp on sight from Yasopp's stories alone. During his time in Luffy's village, Yasopp felt close to Luffy because he is the same age as his son whom he left at home.[8]

Relationships[]

Family[]

Usopp[]

Yasopp is Usopp's father. Usopp does not know much about his father, only that he is a member of Shanks' pirate crew. Even though Yasopp abandoned Usopp as a baby to become a pirate, he genuinely loves his son. This feeling is mutual, as Usopp loves, admires, respects and is very proud of his father for being a pirate. When Kuro insulted his father, Usopp punched him with all his strength and declared that he had nothing but pure pride in his father being a pirate, and who was very proud to be the son of a pirate.[8] It is said by Merry back at Syrup Village that Usopp started lying that pirates were coming to the village, hoping that his father would come back when his mother fell ill.[13] While the Red-Haired Pirates were docked at Windmill Village, Yasopp often spoke fondly of his son to a young Monkey D. Luffy.[2] Usopp greatly respects his father and has inherited his phenomenal marksmanship.

It was later revealed that Yasopp now knows about his son being a member of the Straw Hat Pirates to the point where he is nervous about reuniting with him.[14]

Banchina[]

Banchina was Yasopp's wife. Banchina was the one who persuaded her husband to leave home and fulfill his dream to become a pirate. He did so and left her and their son to join Shanks twelve years ago. Banchina was proud of her husband and admired his courage.[9]

Crew[]

Shanks[]

Yasopp first met Shanks in Syrup Village two years after Gol D. Roger's execution. Shanks had heard of Yasopp's sniping skills and recruited Yasopp to join his crew. Yasopp is shown to be very loyal to his captain and is close enough to be one of his officers. He enjoys partying with him and the rest of the crew.

Friends[]

Monkey D. Luffy[]

Yasopp once showed off his sniping skills to a young Luffy, and often talked about his son, Usopp to him. Luffy became tired of listening to his stories of Usopp, and Yasopp responded by shoving a drink glass over his head before proceeding to tell yet another story.

Other[]

Vista[]

Yasopp and Vista Look at Each Other

Yasopp and Vista glare at each other.

At the end of the Summit War of Marineford, Yasopp and Vista were seen looking at each other with discontent.[12] The Blue Deep databook mentions that something happened in the past between the two of them.

Abilities and Powers[]

As a Senior Officer of the Red Hair Pirates, Yasopp has authority over lower-ranking members of the crew and is a powerful combatant. He is marked as a very notorious pirate by the World Government and Marines.[7]

Marksmanship[]

It's nothing, I could shoot the antenna of an ant 100 ft away.

Yasopp is an extremely skilled marksman who never misses his target.[15] He once boasted that he was capable of shooting the antennae off of an ant at one hundred feet away without harming the rest of it. Luffy also stated that he had never seen him miss a shot.[2] His reputation was such that when Shanks was looking for potential crew members, he sought out Yasopp who had apparently already made quite a name for himself.[10]

In a filler episode, Yasopp was able to easily defeat Daddy Masterson who was a highly skilled sniper of the Marines and was known as one of the best.[16]

Haki[]

Main article: Haki

Kenbunshoku Haki[]

Yasopp is a skilled user of Kenbunshoku Haki.[15] as he was able to tell that the Kid Pirates were fully healed after the Raid on Onigashima.[17]

Non-canonically, in One Piece Film: Red, he also demonstrated exceptional Kenbunshoku Haki, to the point of being able to use to communicate with his son from afar.[18]

Weapons[]

Being a sniper, Yasopp carries guns around with him almost all the time. Early on, he is seen carrying a flintlock pistol,[2] but later he carries a musket.[12]

History[]

Past[]

Shanks Recruits Yasopp

Yasopp being recruited by Shanks.

Twenty-two years ago, following the Pirate King Gol D. Roger's execution 2 years prior, Shanks appeared on Gecko Island asking for 'Yasopp' and introduced himself as a pirate, proposing that he join his crew, to Yasopp's surprise,[10] but he had told the pirate no. Three years later Yasopp and Banchina had a son named Usopp, Yasopp, when his son was still young, left home to become a pirate at the insistence of his wife to follow his dreams.[9] So he went on to join the Red Hair Pirates 13 years ago, the crew raided a CP9 World Government ship, where they stole the Gomu Gomu no Mi.[19][20]

Romance Dawn[]

While at Foosha Village, Yasopp would often demonstrate his incredible shooting skills to Luffy, as well as tell him stories of his son, Usopp.[2] At Party's bar Yasopp happily danced with Lucky Roux and his fellow crewmates while telling Luffy of the benefits of being a pirate and seemed to be fine with allowing the boy onboard one of their voyages, though when Shanks told him one of them would have to stay behind if Luffy joined them he and Roux quickly went back to drinking and denied Luffy's request[1], Afterwards He left the village with his crewmates and sailed to the Grand Line.

East Blue Saga[]

Loguetown Arc[]

Dracule Mihawk visited the Red Hair Pirates and showed Shanks Luffy's wanted poster, which surprised Yasopp. He was hungover (as was the rest of the crew) but they threw another party anyway.[21]

Sky Island Saga[]

Jaya Arc[]

Yasopp was with his crew when Rockstar came back from Whitebeard's ship. Even then in the cold snow, the crew was having a party.[22]

Water 7 Saga[]

Post-Enies Lobby Arc[]

When Shanks decided to visit Whitebeard, Yasopp questioned Shanks's real intentions for attacking Whitebeard since he had apparently said he would not start a fight.[23]

Summit War Saga[]

Marineford Arc[]

Yasopp arrived at Marineford along with the rest of the Red Hair Pirates to try and end the war. Yasopp was seen standing alongside Shanks and the rest of the crew, preparing for potential combat, but Sengoku accepted the truce and ended the war.[12]

Post-War Arc[]

Shanks took Ace and Whitebeard and buried them on an unknown island somewhere in the New World. Yasopp and the rest of the crew, along with the Whitebeard Pirates, attended the funeral to pay their respects.[24]

During the Timeskip[]

During the timeskip, the Red Hair Pirates fought against the Kid Pirates and the battle cost Kid his left forearm.[25]

Dressrosa Saga[]

From the Decks of the World: The 500,000,000 Man Arc[]

After the timeskip, Yasopp and some members of the Red Hair Pirates were at the ruins of a certain island. He was in good spirits while reading a newspaper about the Straw Hat Pirates' new bounties.[26]

Wano Country Saga[]

Wano Country Arc[]

While the Red Hair Pirates were docked outside of Wano, when Luffy was officially declared as one of the Four Emperors, most of the officers of the Red Hair Pirates were happy about this news and wanted. Yasopp was one of the few that was not as happy as he was not mentally ready to reunite with his son Usopp.[14]

The following events are Non-Canon and therefore not considered part of the Canon story.

One Piece Film: Red[]

Uta organized a concert on Elegia in order to realize her dream of performing for the whole world. Yasopp was present during the concert.[27]

Concludes non-canon section.

Final Saga[]

Egghead Arc[]

The crew then took Marco back to Sphinx, where Yasopp said goodbye to him.[28]

The crew was then later partying at Elbaf with the Giant Warrior Pirates, when they received word that the Kid Pirates were looking to fight them. The crew was then making their way towards the coast to challenge them to a fight, demanding their Road Ponehlyph copies in the process.[29] Yasopp was then telling Shanks that Kid seemed to have recovered from his injuries he received during Wano and later watched Shanks singlehandedly taking care of the Kid Pirates.[17]

Major Battles[]

Filler Battles[]

Early Concepts[]

Yasopp seems to have been the final draft of a headband wearing crew member that appeared in several panels in the original Romance Dawn. Yasopp also has a similar pose in a panel that was reused in the final version. The panel was mirrored in the final version, so Yasopp is on the opposite side of his Romance Dawn V.1 counterpart, although his pose itself is not mirrored. Similarly, both he and the Romance Dawn head band wearing member were also helping load supplies when it came time for the crew to leave in both stories.

Anime and Manga Differences[]

In the anime only, Yasopp revealed during a duel with Daddy Masterson that he had been a hopeless father who was unable to do anything for his wife and son.[16]

Luigia has stated that Yasopp was a liar when he was young.[31]

During the Marineford Arc, he attempted to fight the Blackbeard Pirates by showing his gun in a threatening manner to Van Augur.[32]

Translation and Dub Issues[]

Yasopp was (alongside Zeff) inserted into 4Kids' heavily-truncated version of the Reverse Mountain Arc as a means of establishing the "Grand Compass" without Laboon or Crocus. Here, the compass is depicted as something that Yasopp left in Syrup Village to help Usopp become a pirate, as explained via a "flashback" created with footage from Episode 9. While not a plot hole in itself, it should be noted that canon indicates nothing about Yasopp wanting Usopp to go out to sea so early.

The 4Kids dub also removed the writing on his bandanna, as it did with most in-universe writing.

Merchandise[]

He was issued alongside his son Usopp in a One Piece Block Figures set featuring the Straw Hats and their past mentors/loved ones.
