Viking Funeral

From One Piece Encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

The Vikings often cremated their dead leaders in ship burials, known from archaeology and notably from the account of Ahmad ibn Fadlan. It is however important to note that while the funeral that Ibn Fadlan describes is that of a ship set aflame and being put out to sea, most Viking funerals took place on land. The dead were lain in a boat, but the immolation of the boat and the deceased were more often than not immolated on dry land, where piles of stone and soil would then be lain on top of the burnt remains of the boat and the dead.

A Viking funeral can mean burning a boat with a corpse, as a spectacular tribute. The Going Merry received such a funeral, when she could not sail any longer.

Also, it is a humorous term to refer to the destruction of any mechanical object, especially a vehicle, by fire.
