Featured Article Ahoy! This here is the 145th Featured Article.
"Trafalgar D. Water Law" has been featured, meaning it was chosen as an article of interest.

Trafalgar D. Water Law,[11] more commonly known as just Trafalgar Law (トラファルガー・ロー, Torafarugā Rō?) and by his epithet as the "Surgeon of Death", is the captain and doctor of the Heart Pirates, a pirate crew from North Blue.[1][6] On top of being one of eleven pirates who have been referred to as "The Eleven Supernovas" (later known as "The Worst Generation"[12]),[1] he became one of the Shichibukai during the timeskip,[2] but his position as one became unknown after Admiral Fujitora declared his status revoked for allying with the Straw Hat Pirates.[3][4] Law, like many other pirates, dreams of finding One Piece.[13] During the timeskip, his bounty increased from Beli200,000,000[1] to Beli440,000,000[2], before it was frozen.

Appearance

Law is a slim man of a relatively tall height. He has faint shadows right under his yellow eyes (grey in the anime), and his mouth is usually seen in a smile. He has dark blue hair (black in the anime), a majority of which is obscured, save for his sideburns and small black goatee by the northern-style fur hat that Law wears, which is white and has spots on the bottom and along the rim.[1]

He is seen wearing a black-sleeved and hooded yellow hoodie with his Jolly Roger out on the front of his chest and the sleeves rolled up. Law also sports a pair of jeans with odd markings on both the knee and ankle areas, similar to the ones on his hat, but darker in color, and a pair of dark, pointed shoes. He has a pair of small earrings on each ear.[1]

He has many tribal-style tattoos on his arms; on both of his hands, are letters spelled as D E A T H tattooed in black on each of the back of his fingers. Originally in the manga, his left thumb was not tattooed, with the letter A missing.[1] Later on, all of his fingers were tattooed complete with all five letters.[14] He also has a black cross on the back of both of his hands.[1] On his chest, he has a tribal-style heart tattoo with his Jolly Roger on it. He has simpler heart tattoo on his shoulders and his Jolly Roger tattooed on his back.[15]

As a child, Law had his fur hat and his faint shadows right under his eyes, but wore the uniform for the medical academy he was attending: a blue lab coat with a red tie, dark blue shorts and green shoes; he was holding a scalpel on his right hand and a frog on his left hand, since he was already in training to become a surgeon, with his father being his teacher. After escaping Flevance, Law lost his tie and lab coat, and his shirt underneath became more raggedly, and his shorts have white spots on them. Because of his heritage, he inherited the Amber Lead Syndrome that accumulated throughout the generations of Flevance, which left his skin white until he obtained his cure.[16]

In Oda's depiction of the Supernova post-timeskip, he seems to have lost the fur rim of his hat and replaced it with a thick bill, turning it into a rather spherical hat resembling a Wool Skipper. He also now wears a yellow t-shirt similar in appearance to his old sweatshirt with a black jacket over the shirt. On Punk Hazard, Law wears his post-timeskip hat with a long black coat with his crew's jolly roger along the hem and on the sleeve, as well as the word Corazon on the back.[17] He wears black boots. His goatee has also become somewhat scruffier. His right hand now also has the fingers tattooed.

Personality

He's an insane man who sent the hearts of 100 pirates to Headquarters in order to become a Shichibukai!! He's a creep!!
— G-5 Marine[2]

While still a young boy attending a doctor's academy in Flevance, Law was a very kind and devoted child, refusing to leave his family behind despite falsely promised evacuations at hand, and aspiring to become a great doctor like his father while happily going to festivals with his beloved family. Upon the destruction of his homeland, the annihilation of his classmates and family, and diagnosed with no more than thirty-eight months to live, Law suffered a mental breakdown[16] and, according to Doflamingo, came to be known for being very cruel and cunning, having wanted to join Doflamingo's crew so he could destroy everything around him.[18] Apparently, only after he was saved by Corazon did he have a change of heart.

Law is an extremely laid-back character, who is nearly always seen calmly smiling. The only times he is shown not smiling was when he is incredibly shocked, explaining something to other people, frowning in deep thought, or deeply embarrassed such as when Chopper was tied on his head due to him being unable to walk. After the time-skip, he's not shown smiling as much anymore but usually has a more cautious, observing expression on his face. Now he usually smiles when he's trying to provoke someone or is pleased that a plan went as it was intended. He also has a more reckless attitude when faced against other pirates that the World Government has labelled as a higher threat. For example, he casually asked X Drake how many people he had slain in his very first appearance, and had no qualms about flipping off Eustass Kid, the most wanted Supernova on the archipelago, even smiling defiantly when doing so.

However, he hates being ordered around, as evidenced by his frown and following reply when Kid told him and Monkey D. Luffy to stay back as he would hold off the attacking Marines. He is, however, capable of knowing when he and his immediate crew are in a pinch, and is not above resorting to forging brief alliances with rivals for survival. He speaks in a politely sarcastic manner. He also appears to be honorable enough to refuse taking credit that is due to others, as seen when he replied to Jean Bart that his thanks is deserved by Luffy when the former slave offered his gratitude to the pirate captain.

Law has displayed a more competitive side about him in the anime where he, along with Kid and Luffy, got into a childish argument about who gets to take down the marines stationed just outside the Human Auction House when the three Supernovas came out to confront them. Although, this might be because he was a little angry at Kid for trying to order him around, in contrast he does not seem as eager to reach the New World as the other Supernova crews, believing that One Piece will still be there regardless while the other crews fight amongst themselves, and that he needs to steal the throne properly.[13] He then began an as-of-yet unseen mission to achieve Shichibukai status, and allow him much more freedom to do as he pleases in his journey through the New World on the way to One Piece.

Weaklings can't pick their way of death.
— Law to Tashigi[19], quoted from Donquixote Doflamingo[20]

Law also appears to have a sense of honor (or at least respect for those he sees as potential rivals in the future), which is seen when he appears at Marineford and claims he will help Luffy, because it would be too lame if his future enemy were to die. He was also appalled when he heard that Caesar subjected the kids on Punk Hazard to drugs.[21] This is in stark contrast to what most people seemed to think about him, since Scratchmen Apoo stated that Law was infamous for his cruelty, and one of Smoker's men claimed he cut out the hearts of one hundred pirates and sent them to the government in order to gain the position of Shichibukai.[2] Law has displayed a cruel side, offering to strike Tashigi yet again after already bisecting her body.[19] He also suggested to leave the kids on Punk Hazard behind, as they were too much of a burden to deal with.[22]

Despite Law's terse and rather cruel demeanor towards others, he has shown to have some measure of compassion, such as how he decided to help the Straw Hats find a cure for the children affected by Caesar's drugs even though he originally did not want to have anything to do with them. He also warned the Straw Hats to be careful of Caesar's ability, and told those who did not have the ability to engage Logias to stay away.[22]

Law is also very blunt when responding to people. Such occasions include when Ivankov asked if Law was a friend of Luffy, to which he replied no, and even offered to make an excuse to make Ivankov feel better about him saving Luffy. Soon after, a wounded Jinbe went to thank him, only for Law to reply that Jinbe would die if he did not sleep. Later when Jinbe asked what would happen to Luffy if he was allowed to run rampant while still wounded, Law replied that the outcome was simple: Luffy's wounds would open up and he would die. He also has no qualms explaining to other people on how he accomplished nullifying their attacks with his abilities, and before that, even stated to Tashigi that weaklings do not get the right to choose the manner in which they die.[19]

He dislikes bread[23] and umeboshi (pickled ume fruit). He prefers onigiri and also likes grilled fish.[24]

Relationships

Family

Trafalgar Family

Law and his family before their destruction.

Law was very devoted to his parents and sister, Lami, and even refusing to leave with the other children when they were evacuating. Law claimed that his father was the best doctor in Flevance, and the man was responsible for educating Law in medical science. Their murders devastated him, especially his sister's, marking his change in disposition from kind to cruel and cunning.[16]

Childhood Friends and Classmates

Law's Class

Law and his classmates.

During his childhood on Flevance, Law was studying medicine in an academy with many other students. Although a few students seemed irked when Law was holding a dead frog, they were nevertheless very close friends, as when the soldiers of other countries falsely promised that the children may leave, they protested when Law rather stay behind for his ailing sister and parents. Along with the children is a nun who was very kind and friendly towards Law. When all of his classmates and the nun were shot dead by the soldiers, Law broke down in tears.[16]

Heart Pirates

He is very open to new crewmates when he asks the ex-slave pirate captain Jean Bart to join. It has been shown that his crew admires Law and has respect for him, as they abide by his orders regardless of what they are. He also has a bear crew member Bepo, who is a master of martial arts. He and Bepo seem to have a close relationship, as Bepo does not object to Law reclining on his soft body. Law also lets him carry his nodachi around for him.

Law met the pirate captain-turned slave Jean Bart right after parting ways with both Luffy and Kid during the Celestial Dragons Incident, where rather than heading immediately back to the Heart Pirates vessel, Law instead retreated back to the Auction House where Jean Bart was, and with his World Noble masters put out of action, Law invited Bart to be part of his Crew, to which the latter immediately agreed, expressing his gratitude, with Law only replying that he should give half his thanks towards Luffy. He appears to be quite loyal towards his liberator, executing any command Law may issue to the best of his ability.

Allies

Monkey D. Luffy

Luffy with Law

Law and Luffy together.

Law first encountered Monkey D. Luffy in the Human Auctioning House where the latter gained his attention after striking down a Celestial Dragon in front of everyone. Law, like Kid, could only smile at Luffy's defiance of the consequences. He seems to have some respect for Luffy, as shown after defeating the Marines outside the Human Auction House. Also, he and his crew traveled to Marineford during the Battle of Marineford to assist with Luffy's escape, and then later administered medical treatment to him. As he said, while Luffy would one day be his enemy, an enemy relationship is still a relationship and that it would be a "damn shame" for Luffy to die at Marineford.

After the timeskip, Law, now one of the Shichibukai, claimed to Smoker that he would annihilate Luffy should he encounter him on Punk Hazard. After defeating Smoker, Law encountered Luffy again, with the latter being pleasantly surprised to see Law despite being unaware of the full extent of Law's status. When Luffy said how grateful he was, Law stated that he does not need to be thanked, as it was just a "spur of the moment" thing, and that as fellow pirates, the two of them still remain rivals. In spite of his previous claims, he did not attack Luffy in any way and even told him where he can find his other crewmates.

Later, he helped Luffy save Nami from the Yeti Cool Brothers and proposed an alliance between their crews with an ultimate goal of defeating the Yonko Kaido.[25] Luffy agreed, making their crews allies in a relationship (which Luffy perceives to be as practically a friendship, but Law sees as more of a professional agreement). Luffy often treats him very casually, like a good friend, something which Law usually frowns upon. Law has invested enough in this alliance that, despite it having nothing to do with their agreement, he decided to help Luffy and his crew save the kids on Punk Hazard, even though he himself only viewed them as a burden. He also has a lot of faith in Luffy, as he asserted to Doflamingo that Luffy would capture Caesar without a problem.

Law does seem to have some doubts about Luffy's reliability and carefree attitude. When Luffy sent Caesar flying, instead of capturing him, as he was supposed to, Law remarked that he knew he should not have formed an alliance with him and resorted to trying to capture Caesar himself. However, after Luffy put his faith in Usopp and Nami to incapacitate the deranged scientist, which they did, he expressed satisfaction that Luffy upheld his end of their agreement. [26] Later, he also objected to Luffy's decision to throw a party instead of leaving Punk Hazard, as he believed they were still vulnerable; though he still reluctantly joins and has stew with Smoker. Though Law indicated that he wished to 'use' Luffy when forming the alliance, due to the Straw Hats' great unpredictability and ambition, the Shichibukai instead feels like the one being used.[25]

Straw Hat Pirates

Law is Shocked at Straw Hat Antics

Law is mortified at the Straw Hats' shenanigans.

Several of the other Straw Hat Pirates did not trust Law and were against an alliance, particularly Usopp and Nami. Robin supported Luffy's choice but also warned him about a possible betrayal. By contrast, Zoro approves of Law's goal to defeat one of the Yonko, while Brook, Sanji and Franky have accepted Luffy's decision. Both Usopp and Sanji told Law that his idea of an alliance is different from Luffy's and later Sanji reveals to him that Doflamingo never stepped down from his Shichibukai status.

He seems to have formed a neutral relationship with Chopper who in return seems to have a certain level of respect for Law, partly because the reindeer finds Law's Devil Fruit powers "cool", as seen when he used them to warp around Caesar Clown's laboratory. Later on Chopper called him a murderer though and feared that he 'cut apart' the kids, which Chopper mistook as killing them.

Law tends to become either appalled or deadpan whenever the Straw Hats engage in their usual childish antics. Usually cool and collected, despite his best efforts to keep them focused on their mutual goals, Law has been drawn into their carefree 'pace' and was flabbergasted when he realized it.[23] However, Law still respects them as allies since he would not claim that they were his subordinates even if it means losing his Shichibukai title.[3] Later, when the Straw Hats were informed about Law’s confrontation with Donquixote Doflamingo, they were surprised, thinking that Caesar was supposed to be in his custody. Nami said that Law is almost as reckless as Luffy, doing whatever he wants and not listening to anybody.

When Doflamingo was about to attack Nami, Chopper and Brook, Law showed some signs of concern for his allies.

Law doesn't refer to some of them by their names, he either uses their epithet, such as calling Luffy "Strawhat-ya" or Sanji "Blackleg-ya" or his own made up nicknames, such as calling Usopp "Nose-ya", Franky "Robo-ya" and Brook "Bone-ya". He does, however, refer to Zoro, Nami, Chopper and Robin by their names, calling them Zoro-ya, Nami-ya, Tony-ya and Nico-ya.[27]

Shichibukai

Boa Hancock

Because of his willingness to help Luffy during his time of need, Hancock put much of her faith in him. She provided Law and his crew with food and shelter on her island under the terms they did not enter her city. Law also has shown to be among the few men who seem to have had no interest in her beauty. To ensure Luffy's safety she did not tell the Marines anything of their private meeting.

Donquixote Doflamingo

Doflamingo vs

Law fighting Doflamingo.

Law used to be a subordinate of Doflamingo's.[5] Law and Doflamingo apparently got along quite well, as Doflamingo viewed him as his little brother, and even declared his intentions to turn Law into his right hand man.[28][11] Buffalo also stated that Doflamingo was saving the "heart seat" for him.[26] Law however did not want to stay under Doflamingo's control and betrayed him.[29] After the betrayal, Doflamingo wants Law to die in a terrible manner that he would regret ever being born.[28] In turn, Law manages to turn the tables on Doflamingo by taking Caesar hostage, threatening his former captain's alliance with Kaido, leading Doflamingo to hate Law deeply.[30] Law's deep rooted hatred for Doflamingo is revealed to have been born 13 years ago, when Doflamingo killed his own brother and Law's benefactor, Corazon.[17]

Rivals/Enemies

As a Supernova, he sees the other Beli100,000,000+ bounty rookies he encountered in the Sabaody Archipelago as his rivals, though he seems to be focused more on Kid and especially Luffy. He, Kid and Luffy have all agreed to meet again in the New World. Outside of the Supernovas, Law seems to earn the enmity of those whom he engages in battle, mainly swordplay specialists who regard his ability to cut down enemies without actually killing them an insult to being a swordsman. Law also seems willing to cooperate with rivals in order to defeat a stronger enemy. The other Supernovas believed him to be a government dog for becoming a Shichibukai, but quickly change their opinions after seeing him captured on Punk Hazard.

Eustass Kid

In contrast to Luffy, Law's interactions with Eustass Kid were nowhere near as hospitable.[31] In the manga, he flipped Kid the finger when Law (presumably) overheard Kid talking behind his back regarding rumors of how Law's manners appear to be rather lacking.[32] Later on, when Kid volunteered to deal with the Marines amassing outside of the auctioning House as a farewell gift to Rayleigh as well as the Straw Hats and the Heart Pirates, both Law and Luffy took Kid's cockiness as an insult and opted to follow him outside in order to compete with the fellow super rookie. When Kid insisted that he alone is sufficient enough for the task and orders the other two to step down, Law was the first to retaliate by stating he will take Kid out first should he order him about one more time.[33] Nevertheless, he once again allied with Kid after the two crews were confronted by a Pacifista.

Vergo

Law had a past relationship with Vergo, who knew the Shichibukai since the former's childhood.[5] On one occasion when Law infuriated Vergo, the latter had brutally assaulted Law, to the point of inflicting trauma on the young pirate.[34] Vergo mocked Law by beating him unconscious without hesitation.[35] On the orders by Doflamingo, Vergo plotted to execute Law in the most brutal manner possible, and Vergo further suggested cutting off one of Law's ears as proof of his death. Law paid Vergo back in kind by cutting him into many pieces upon his defeat.[34][36]

Caesar Clown

The two of them do not appear to be very open with each other. While Caesar demands Law to explain his actions against Smoker, Law says that he is the one who should be complaining. Based on Law's words, especially on what he stated to Luffy: they both have something they want to get back, their relationship is not very civil. Caesar does not seem to trust Law, as he quickly thought Law betrayed him. He also wanted to shoot Law at first, though he decided against that Law probably did not betray him, afterwards. Law is disgusted by Caesar’s methods towards the children. Later, Law and the Straw Hats express their intention to kidnap Caesar. As for Law, he only wants Caesar because of his ability to create SAD. It also appears that Law has a great deal of knowledge about Caesar's true ambitions to oppose the World Government. Caesar stated that he thought they could have become good friends while confronting Law for his betrayal. After Caesar's defeat, Law uses him as leverage to coerce Doflamingo to resign from the Shichibukai.

World Government and Marines

Since childhood, Law despises the World Government due to their refusal to help the people of Flevance, and anything connected with the global bureaucracy. This only worsened when the Government spread lies about how Amber Lead Syndrome is a contagious disease, leading to the majority of the world to believe it and turn a prejudiced attitude towards a young Law.[37]

Before the timeskip, Law was considered an enemy of the World Government since he is pirate who battled a large number of Marines and a Pacifista at Sabaody Archipelago and rescued Monkey D. Luffy, a nefarious pirate at large, at the climax of the Battle of Marineford. However, after Law gave the hearts of a hundred pirates to the government, they enlist him into the Shichibukai and they seem willing to overlook the fact that Law fought alongside Luffy at Sabaody Archipelago and later helped him escape the Marineford War.

As one of the Shichibukai, Law is an ally of the Government. As such, he has special privileges to do as he pleases without the Marines attempting to arrest him. Like many other Shichibukai, he is not afraid of disobeying the government for his own convenience as he entered Punk Hazard with full awareness of it being off-limits in order to use Dr. Vegapunk's laboratory and has no qualms in killing Marines if they get in his way so long as it remains unknown.[10]

He openly battled the Marines at Punk Hazard, as well as allowing Luffy to escape the clutches of Vice Admiral Smoker, despite being a Shichibukai at that point. Law cooperated with Caesar Clown, an enemy of the Marines, so he could get a better chance of crippling the production of SAD. He later forms an alliance with the Straw Hat Pirates to dethrone one of the Yonko, Kaido.[25] From the other side, Law seems to be knowledgeable enough of the World Government’s attempts to mutate people into giants, so that they can use them to create an army.[38]

After declaring his alliance with the Straw Hat Pirates, his position as a Shichibukai was put in jeopardy and he was immediately attacked by Admiral Fujitora and Donquixote Doflamingo.

Others

Brownbeard

Due to his defeat by the hands of Basil Hawkins, Brownbeard came to hate the pirates from the "worst generation". The only exception from that is Trafalgar Law because he gave him new legs. He is extremely grateful and loyal to both him and Caesar, referring to them as "kindhearted gods". When Brownbeard was captured by the Straw Hats, he was sure that Law would come and save him. It is currently unknown what Law thinks about Brownbeard. However, he completely ignored Brownbeard when he asked Law to save him which shows that Law has no concern for Brownbeard though he expresses no opposition to temporarily cooperating with him in order to defeat Caesar.

Kin'emon

Kin'emon once held a grudge against Law for cutting him to pieces while he was searching for his son. Kin'emon later abandoned his grudge after cooperating to free his son and defeat Caesar and going to Dressrosa with the Shichibukai to rescue a comrade. Kin'emon calls him Law-dono, a respectful honorific.

Corazon

Corazon was Doflamingo's younger brother and an old friend of Law's. Their relationship started out very negative when Corazon left a poor first impression by clumsily falling for childish pranks set by Baby 5 and Buffalo and then throwing Law out of a window simply because he hated children.[39] This only worsened as Law considered Corazon to be too foolish to have the right to live, when Law's family and friends all died, and went as far as to break the crew's law by stabbing Corazon from behind.[16]

However, after learning Law's true name, Corazon became much more open towards Law, and revealed everything that he was keeping a secret from Doflamingo. At first this trust backfired, as Law decided he was going to tell Doflamingo everything Corazon revealed to him, but instead he decided to even his terms with Corazon who had never told Doflamingo that Law stabbed him. Corazon then took Law hostage as he set out on a quest to find a cure for Law's Amber Lead disease. He took the young boy to various hospitals across the sea, attacking anyone who showed prejudice against Law. After 6 months without making any progress towards his goal, Corazon started to feel some regret for his actions, realizing they've all been in vain and have only reminded Law of his traumatic past. As he tucks a sleeping Law into a blanket, he weeps as he recalls the time Law stabbed him. He could tell how much Law was suffering, and since that event Corazon wanted only to help ease Law's pain and anguish. Law, who had woken up, overhears Corazon and also begins to weep. The next day Law began referring to Corazon as "Cora-san," much to the latter's surprise.[37][40]

After these events, Law continued to admire Corazon and told Luffy that Corazon was the person he cherished the most, with Corazon even saving his life before.[17] When Corazon was murdered by Doflamingo, Law swore revenge on Corazon's behalf. Law is even willing to die if it means he can avenge Corazon.

Cavendish

Due to being one of the pirates of the Worst Generation, Cavendish despised him for stealing his fame, and as such, wanted him dead. However, due to Law's alliance with Monkey D. Luffy and his oath to abandon his grudge due to being returned to human form by Usopp. Cavendish lets go of his resentment against the two Supernovas and cooperates with them to defeat the Donquixote Family.

Silvers Rayleigh

Despite the brief meeting between the two it appears they have a neutral relationship with each other. Rayleigh politely greets him and thanks Law for treating Luffy. Law appears to have deduced Rayleigh's motive to find Luffy on Amazon Lily.

Jinbe

Law rescued the Knight of the Sea and Luffy from the Battle of Marineford while also healing their injuries. Jinbe thanks Law for his assistance but Law simply responds his wounds will reopen if he continues to move.

Abilities and Powers

Law Being Trained by Donquixote Pirates

Law being trained in combat by Gladius, Lao G and Diamante.

In his youth, after Law realized he was dying, he went to Doflamingo to join the future Shichibukai's crew, planning on causing as much devastation as possible to the world before dying. Doflamingo accepted Law, and while part of the Donquixote Pirates, he learnt swordsmanship from Diamante, marksmanship from Gladius and martial arts from Lao G.[41][11]

Law is a fearsome pirate who, along with most of his crew, proved resistant to Rayleigh's burst of Haki that took out almost everyone in the Auction House. Even Donquixote Doflamingo commented to his subordinates at Punk Hazard about Law's potential, comparing it to Luffy's, which Doflamingo witnessed himself during the war at Marineford two years ago;[42] Doflamingo saw talent in Law, and intended to make him into his right hand man, as well as reserved the Heart seat for Law, showing that the latter is consider on the same level as the elite officer of the Doflamingo Family. Vergo was only able to keep ahead of Law because he had the latter's heart at the time — a situation that immediately reversed after Smoker (reluctantly) helped Law to retrieve the organ. He is also apparently quite fearless, as he allowed several Marines to get within close-range of him on Sabaody Archipelago, despite being a long-range fighter. During their stay at Sabaody Archipelago, the Kid Pirates and Heart Pirates were caught in a battle with a Pacifista. The end of the battle was unseen, but since they reappear during the Marineford Arc, it can be assumed that they either defeated the Pacifista or managed to elude it. Kizaru mentioned that the Heart Pirates did a good job at running away.

Trafalgar Law is shown to be a very crafty and opportunistic leader, even for a successful pirate captain and a former "Supernova"; despite being regarded as one of the most powerful pirates of his generation, Law was the only one of the group to voluntarily rest in the "Paradise" half of the Grand Line for at least a couple months, rather than immediately enter the treacherous New World region, indicating a great deal of caution and tactical mentality.[13] He also demonstrated this by replacing a lot of the seastone chains on Punk Hazard with steel ones and came up with a plan to quickly and stealthily escape from the cage he was trapped in.[43] He was able to make a plan to retrieve the substance known as SAD, and his only miscalculation was Vergo, a man who was able to beguile the entire Marine organization, including the observant Smoker. He even managed to force Doflamingo, an extremely cunning and resourceful pirate in his own right, into a lose-lose scenario of either quitting the Shichibukai and face the wrath of the Admirals or stay and face the wrath of Kaido.[44]

Sometime during the timeskip, Law has become so powerful and infamous that even the ruthless Marines of G-5 were deeply afraid of him. He had gained a bounty that surpasses Luffy's current one, and then brought a hundred pirates' hearts to the World Government, earning him a position in the Shichibukai.[2] Law was able to battle and eventually defeat Smoker, a Marine vice admiral and a Logia user without getting himself seriously injured. He also defeated Vergo in one move, while before in the past was unable to even harm him. He is now strong enough to counter attacks from an Admiral and a fellow Shichibukai at the same time, as shown during his confrontation with Issho and Doflamingo.

Physical Abilities

In addition to his Devil Fruit, Law has sufficient physical strength and tactical prowess to duel on equal terms against Smoker and his jitte. In addition, despite Caesar saying that the Yeti Cool Brothers are quite powerful, Law managed to dispatch one of them with relative ease.

He has also displayed great endurance, as he had his heart directly crushed to the point where he lost consciousness, only to recover shortly afterwards. In addition, he was also capable of enduring a prolonged beating from Vergo which resulted in him becoming severely bloody before defeating him in a single blow once Smoker had retrieved his heart.

Even when he was defeated and injured by Donquixote Doflamingo and Admiral Issho, Law was able to quickly recover and escape.

Medical Expertise

Law Prepares to Operate

Law prepares to perform surgery on Luffy and Jinbe, as seen in the anime.

Since childhood, Law has already attended an academy for medical science, with his father, the best doctor of Flevance, teaching him the more intricate procedures.[16]

He has earned the nickname "Surgeon of Death" due to his surgical skills in addition to his formidable combat abilities. He appears to be considerably skilled as a doctor, as he was able to treat Luffy and Jinbe right after both of them barely escaped a murderous Akainu that left them on the brink of death. The mere fact that he was able to stabilize Jinbe's condition strongly hints that Law's medical expertise is not limited to human anatomy alone (though human and fishmen share the same blood, so it is possible that they have similar anatomies). He later volunteers to find a cure for the children's condition at Punk Hazard, implying that he is also versed in pharmacology. The fact he was able to cure the children of Caesar's deadly NHC10 drug, though not completely, is a noteworthy feat, something Chopper was even amazed by.

The powers given to him by the Ope Ope no Mi make surgeries easier to perform, as they allow him to cut a patient's body open and remove organs without damaging any tissues, leaving scars, or causing the patient to bleed. This was demonstrated, off screen, during the conclusion of the Punk Hazard arc, during which he treated the children with a series of surgeries that involved cutting the childrens' bodies apart in a manner that initially made Chopper believe he had killed them.

Devil Fruit

Further information: Ope Ope no Mi
Law Uses Shambles on Marines

Law using "Room: Shambles" on some Marines.

Law is the user of a Devil Fruit called the Ope Ope no Mi, which allows him to create a spherical territory of light blue aura. In this territory, he is capable of separating and spatially displacing anything and everything inside (including himself), referred to as that he can "operate" on anything within the spherical "operating room". Easily among the most versatile Devil Fruits around, with his powers, Law is easily capable of causing mass havoc within the area he controls. He can also use it for teleportation purposes.[10] He has also demonstrated being able to apply his ability for medical purposes, as seen when he cured the giant children from their addiction brought by Caesar's drugs.[25]

Law appears to have mastered his power to such a great extent, that he can even cut through someone who completely imbued their body in Haki.[45]

The weakness of the technique seems to be the concentration required to use it; Law must gesture with his hands to centralize the effects upon its victims, which can allow an opening for a fast enough opponent, such as Vergo. His abilities also depletes his strength the more he uses them. And given Law's strategic nature, he seems to have a strong tendency to preserve every bit of his stamina in preparation before facing off against powerful adversaries, like the likes of Donquixote, as seen when he consistently refused to use his powers to aid his Straw Hat Allies as they make their way towards Green Bit.[46] The full extent of this ability remains unknown at this time.[47] Other than that, he has the same standard weaknesses as all Devil Fruit users.

Swordsmanship

Law's offensive abilities lie in his swordsmanship, demonstrated by his expert use of a sword about as tall as he is, though he is seen being able to defend himself without it by using his Devil Fruit abilities. In contrast to the ranged slashes of traditional swordsman, Law’s sword slashes don’t travel but simply provide the cutting effect while his spatial manipulation within his Room provides the range. He can dismember people without harming them and attach separated parts in any manner he sees fit.

His proficiency is enough that he was able to clash against Smoker's Nanashaku Jitte with little trouble, and combined with his Devil Fruit powers he has repeatedly shown being able to mutilate people faster than they can react, apparently defeating Kin'emon in this manner. He also was able to quickly defeat Tashigi, a skilled swordswoman of the Marines, severing her sword in two, as well as taking down Scotch and his giant knife in one swift move.

His greatest swordsmanship feats shown so far have been defeating Vergo, where the wake of his slash was capable of cutting apart Caesar's laboratory and the surrounding mountains, and cutting a meteor in half.

He also managed to wrap the rope created by Donquixote Doflamingo's attack around his sword.[48]

Haki

Law is stated by Luffy to have Haki.[22] The extent of his ability in using it has not been revealed, but as he asserted himself as one of the people capable of battling Caesar Clown, it is safe to assume that he can at least use Busoshoku Haki.

During his battle with Smoker, Law was shown capable of bypassing the vice-admiral's Logia defenses thanks to his own Haki powers.

Kikoku Infobox

Law with Kikoku.

Kikoku is a large version of the typical Japanese sword type known as nodachi. It has an oblong-shaped hand-guard coated with short white fur, sheathed in a black scabbard decorated by white crosses from the opening to the bottom, and with a small piece of red rope tied near its opening. Law appears to be quite skilled with it, being able to slice up targets from a distance (although this effect is attributed to his Devil Fruit power). Due to its size, Law usually carries this sword over his shoulder (in contrast to the other sword-wielding characters in the series, who either carry theirs on their hips or over their backs); yet in other times, he delegates one of his crewmates (namely Bepo) to carry this sword for him. Law was able to deflect Doflamingo's strings with his sword, which is noteworthy, as Doflamingo managed to effortlessly cut everything else so far.[40]

Law's Breakdown

Losing everything, Law suffered a mental breakdown.

Law was born in the country of Flevance in the North Blue, which was known the "White City" for the color of the Amber Lead that was mined there.[16] He lived there with his parents, who were doctors and were likewise training him, and his younger sister. Law's childhood coincided with the time when the symptoms of Amber Lead poisoning were at their peak within the country, and he was doomed to die before reaching adulthood. The kingdom was at war with neighboring countries who mistakenly believed that the disease was contagious. The World Government and the royal family knew about the sickness beforehand but did not disclose this information to the public, even when the symptoms were becoming more noticeable. His parents were doing all they could to help the people but couldn't do much without proper supplies. What's more, Law's sister, who was in an advanced stage of the disease, was slowly dying. A local nun was collecting children to be taken off the island during the war and offered Law to come with her. He declined as he didn't want to leave his sister behind, but the nun promised to come back for him. However, an extermination crew shot his parents before his very eyes. The nun and his friends were likewise killed in the raid and his parents' hospital was burned down with his sister inside during the destruction of the country. An emotionally wrecked Law managed to escape the quarantine by hiding under dead bodies being shipped outside the city. Having lost everything and a wrong levied against everyone dear to him, Law became nihilistic and omnicidal, wishing to destroy as much of the world as he could without believing in anything anymore.[16]

From there he arrived at a port town, Spider Miles, he approached the Donquixote Pirates and asked Doflamingo to let him join while strapping himself with bombs. With the time he had, Law wanted to destroy as much as he could.[18] While speaking with Trébol and Diamante, Law explained that he had around three years to live and reminded them what his goals were. Afterwards, Law met Corazon and showed indifference to his clumsiness. Shortly after Law was informed that Corazon hated kids, the executive threw Law out the window. Law, having survived the fall, was angered at being treated this way out of the blue and swore to kill him. He watched impassively as Corazon burned himself after accidentally setting his feathery mantle ablaze while lighting a cigarette.[39]

Law stabs Corazon in a fit of rage.

At a pizza feast, Lao G told Law about the crew's blood law and Doflamingo warned him not to lay a hand on Corazon. The crew then discovered that Law was sick with the Amber Lead Disease, and Jora incorrectly thought that the disease was contagious, at which Doflamingo corrected her. Doflamingo then questioned Law if there were any other survivors. Law answered that he did not know and revealed that he escaped the extermination of Flevance by hiding in a pile of corpses, causing Gladius to gag. Law then declared that he no longer believed in anything and that he will have his revenge on Corazon. Baby 5 slapped him on the head and warned him about the consequences, which included torture. Law merely glared at Baby 5, causing her to cry. Later on, while most of the crew was out raiding and discussing on Law's past, Law snuck up on Corazon while he was alone and stabbed him from behind. However, he was seen by Buffalo, who was shocked at seeing Law breaking the crew's blood law.[16] To get away with it, Law bribed Buffalo with ice cream.[11]

However, Law was still a bit uneasy about Buffalo's trustworthiness, so he attempted to flee only be to caught by Jora and Machvise who brought him to Doflamingo. Law than noticed that Corazon was not dead and believed that he had informed his brother that he (Law) had impaled him. Doflamingo announced that he had decided to officially welcome Law into the Donquixote Pirates. Law was shocked that Corazon did not simply write something up to tell Doflamingo about what had happened.[11]

Law reminded Doflamingo that he would die in less than three years, but Doflamingo went on to explain that their "family" dealt with underworld businesses and told Law of a possibility for survival: obtaining a Devil Fruit power that could heal him. He further explained that if Law was lucky to find one before his life expired, he would raise and train him to be his right-hand man in ten years. Doflamingo later noticed Corazon's wound and Corazon informed him that he was attacked by an enemy.[11]

Down the next roughly two year, Doflamingo explained his plans as they traveled and committed acts of piracy while Law was being annoyed by Corazon's constant clumsiness and falling for practical jokes. The Donquixote Pirates would loot, attack, make business deals, fight and toast during their time together. Law was tutored under Doflamingo himself, while the rest of the family also trained him: Lao G in Martial arts, Gladius in gunnery, and Diamante in swordsmanship.[11]

Eventually, the time came when Law only had a year or less left to live. Baby 5 noticed how the white spots had increased. Baby 5 and Buffalo told Law their real names and asked Law to reveal his. Buffalo even threatened to reveal what Law did to Corazon two years prior. Law then told them his full name, Trafalgar D. Water Law. He explained that the "D." was supposed to be a secret and Water was his true name. Baby 5 found the name boring, causing Law to lash out at her. Suddenly, Law was picked up and carried away by Corazon.[11]

When at a safe distance, Corazon, speaking for the first time, asked if that was really his full name. Corazon then explained that if he was really a "D.", he should leave the crew right away and warned him not to go anywhere near Doflamingo.[11]

Law and Corazon then spoke in private. Corazon revealed that he was never mute and created a soundproof barrier to prevent others from hearing their conversation. He also revealed that his goal all along was to stop Doflamingo's madness. He did not want Law to became a monster like his brother so he once again asked Law to leave the crew. Law refused to do so and Corazon explained to him about the secret name "D" and asked Law to go find a cure for his illness. Instead, Law stated that he would reveal Corazon's secrets to Doflamingo. Corazon tried to stop Law with a kick, but Law managed to trip him and he fell into a garbage bin. Law ran back to the crew with Buffalo and Baby 5 and kept them quiet by offering them ice cream. When Corazon returned to the crew, Law told him that he decided to keep their conversation secret to repay Corazon for not telling Doflamingo about his transgression.[37]

Sometime after these events, Law watched Corazon demonstrate his Devil Fruit powers, but was not impressed, saying Corazon couldn't do anything with those powers.

Corazon later took Law with him to find a cure for the Amber Lead Syndrome. In an attempt to help Law, Corazon took Law to various hospitals, but everyone they met treated Law with spite and refused to treat him. After six months, the two developed a much better relationship of friendship, as Law referred to him as "Cora-san". At that moment, Doflamingo suddenly contacted them via Den Den Mushi.[37]

After checking to see how their search was going, Doflamingo told Corazon of his plan to steal the Ope Ope no Mi, which could be used to heal Law. After Corazon hung up, he told Law about his plan to steal the fruit first and feed it to him so Law could heal himself, which shocked Law into speechlessness.

As Corazon made contact with the Marines, Law started succumbing to his illness. A fretful Corazon urged him to stay alive for three more weeks. While sailing through a typhoon, Law reminded Corazon that the World Government was responsible for the destruction of his home and the death of his family. He asked Corazon if he was working for the government. To his relief, Corazon denied being a Marine. Corazon also warned Law that they would soon become enemies of both the Donquixote Pirates as well as the World Government. They later arrived at Minion Island, where the pirate crew that possessed the Ope Ope no Mi was stationed. Corazon left Law sitting in a corner of an abandoned village while he go steal the Devil Fruit. Law waited for him to return while combatting his illness.

Sometime later, Law became acquainted with Vergo.[5] At some point he formed the Heart Pirates and ate the Ope Ope no Mi, the latter act angering Doflamingo as he never intended for Law to eat it.[41] Although Law was meant to die at age 13 from Amber Lead Syndrome, he was somehow cured, and continued to live on.

Eleven years before the main storyline began, Doflamingo killed his own brother and then-head of the Donquixote Family, Corazon. As he was Law's benefactor, Law has wanted nothing more than to see him die since.[48]

At some point he was severely beaten by Vergo. Doflamingo surmised the incident had left some form of trauma on Law.[34]

Along with his crew they fought their way through the Grand Line and eventually reached the Sabaody Archipelago.[1]

Summit War Saga

Sabaody Archipelago Arc

Like the other Supernovas, he is first shown having arrived at the Archipelago with his crew before heading for the New World. He is the final Supernova to be introduced, seen sitting on a crate as X Drake, another Supernova, passed by after having broken up a fight between Urouge and Killer, before he asks how many people Drake has slain (in the anime, he is apparently on the scene moments before Drake appeared, clearly enjoying the fight between Urouge and Killer).[1]

Later, Eustass Kid observes him in the Auction House on Grove 1, where he reveals that what he has heard about Law is not very pleasant. Law replies with flipping him off, causing Kid to note that Law is lacking manners.[49] As the auctioning continues, Law only observes in boredom.[50]

After Monkey D. Luffy attacks one of the World Nobles, he is seen smiling at the reckless action that his fellow Supernova has performed.[51] A short while after, Law reveals to Luffy that the auction house is surrounded by Marines, since the Archipelago is so close to Marine Headquarters (although Luffy is more interested in the bear who was with Law).[52]

Law, Kid and Luffy confront the Marines.

Later, after Silvers Rayleigh has knocked out the majority of the soldiers standing in the pirates way, he is seen still standing, along with his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, Kid, Killer, and their crew as well. As the Straw Hats and Rayleigh prepare to leave the Auction House before the admiral shows up, Kid tells Luffy and Law to stay back as he will hold off the Marine grunts, much to both Law's and Luffy's annoyance.[53]

Law tells Kid that he would finish him off too if he orders him around again.[54] The trio then demonstrate their Devil Fruit powers to hold off the Marines, with Law utilizing a field where he replaces a grunt's head with a cannon ball fired at him. As the fight continues, Law is busy with switching around the Marine soldiers body parts in order to confuse and beat them.[55]

Later, when the trio has defeated the first wave, Law notes that Luffy has shrunk due to the side-effects of Gear Third.[56] After everyone has exited the Auction House, the Marines begin a heavier assault on the pirates. At that moment, when Luffy proclaims that he will be the one to find One Piece (which catches Law's and Kid's attention), Kid tells Law and Luffy that the three will meet each other in the New World, to which Law only smiles.[57]

Then, as a bigger Marine grunt tries to attack him, he orders his bear companion, Bepo, to attack them, because he is done fighting.[58] Before he exits the scene, he recruits Captain Jean Bart, a former slave of Saint Roswald, into his crew, to which the captain accepts wholeheartedly, although Law tells him that half of the thanks will have to go to "Straw Hat-ya".[59]

Heart and Kid Pirates vs

Afterward, he and his crew make an escape but come across the Kid Pirates fighting a Pacifista. Kuma attacks him with an energy blast but he manages to avoid it before he and Kid prepare to fight the Pacifista.[60] The events of this battle are not shown but him and his crew manage to escape the Pacifista and the admiral.

Marineford Arc

During the Whitebeard War, Law and his crew were initially present on the Sabaody Archipelago where the broadcast of Ace's execution was being shown. He was presumably watching the events at Marineford unfold, along with his fellow Supernovas, as he ordered Bepo and Jean Bart to set sail immediately after the broadcast was cut.[61]

Heart Pirates Arrive at Marineford

Law and his crew arrive at Marineford.

Towards the end of the battle, as Jinbe and Buggy fled the conflict with a critically injured Luffy, Law emerged from the ocean in his ship, a submarine. With Bepo and Jean Bart at his back, Law told Buggy that he is a doctor, and ordered him to hand over Luffy for medical treatment. He claimed that although Straw Hat may become an enemy of his in the future, Law would not allow that destiny to go unfulfilled by letting him die now.[62]

As the war gets more intense, Law continues to tell Buggy to drop Luffy and Jinbe to his ship. Just as Buggy is about to, he is shot through his shoulder by Kizaru and throws them at Law's ship as he flees. As Jean Bart catches them he orders his crew to dive, but as soon as they are leaving, Kizaru shows up and tries to capture them. Luckily, the distraction of Coby and the Red Hair Pirates allows them to leave the battle ground.[63]

But before his vessel could fully submerge, Buggy, who was convinced by Shanks to help return his hat back to Luffy (for a treasure map that the Yonko was supposedly willing to give in exchange for Buggy's services), threw Luffy's signature hat at the submarines opening hatch right before Law sealed it off, and was promptly caught by Law. He then commenced to supervising Luffy and Jinbe's medical treatment while putting the Straw Hat on the side table, as the submarine is evading Aokiji's Ice Age and Kizaru's Yasakani no Magatama.[64]

Post-War Arc

Later, as Boa Hancock and Emporio Ivankov arrive with a Marine battleship, he comes outside from the sub and informs them that he has done all he can and that Luffy is still in critical condition. When asked by Ivankov if he was a friend of Luffy, he replies that he is not and that he also had no obligation to save him. He offers to make an excuse as to why he is treating Luffy, only for Ivankov to state that he did not need to as Law was only following his instincts. Jinbe then wakes up and thanks Law for saving him and Luffy, only for Law to bluntly tell Jinbe to go to sleep or he would die.[65]

After his crew's arrival at Amazon Lily, he told Jinbe that if Luffy kept struggling his wounds will open back up and he might die this time.[66] Later, he was seen looking at Luffy's straw hat with a curious look on his face.[67]

After a little while, he and his crew see Silvers Rayleigh take down a sea king and swim ashore. He tells them he was hit by a storm, but Law's crew is baffled about a storm on the Calm Belt (only to realize it was actually a storm outside the Calm Belt).[68] Law gives him the straw hat and sets sail. He then talks about Rayleigh and figuratively about the storm made by "D" with a grin on his face while he sails away.[69]

File:Law Taking his Time.png

Law taking his time before entering the New World.

He is seen again somewhere near Sabaody Archipelago, discussing with his crew about why he does not want to enter the New World yet, saying that he is waiting for the right time and that in any case One Piece will not disappear and that the other pirates are free to fight each other without him. He then tells his men to follow his orders in order for him to "steal the proper throne", to which his crew happily rejoices.[13]

Timeskip

Sometime during the timeskip, Law acquired the status of Shichibukai by sending the hearts of one hundred pirates to the World Government.[2] He was held responsible as the mastermind of an event known as the "Rocky Port Incident".[23]

He went to Punk Hazard in the New World and formed a partnership with Caesar Clown.[70] In exchange for allowing Law to stay on Punk Hazard, Law gave his heart to Caesar.[71] While working with Caesar, he gave new legs to Brownbeard and many others who lost the ability to walk.[72] When Kin'emon came to Punk Hazard to find his abducted son, Law confronted and dismembered the samurai.[73]

Pirate Alliance Saga

Punk Hazard Arc

After intercepting a distress call that Luffy answered, Smoker and his subordinates then go to Punk Hazard to find the Straw Hats. They arrived at the frozen side of the island in front of a large facility. Before entering the building, the Marines are then greeted by Law who asks what they are doing at his "vacation house". Smoker reminds Law that the island is off-limits. Replying in kind, Law then tells Smoker that it goes the same for him.[2]

Smoker then plays the message between the man on the island and Luffy. Smoker then tells Law that he knows that Law and Luffy fought together on Sabaody and that Law rescued Luffy during the war. Law, however, insists that he had nothing to do with the emergency call. Smoker then requests on inspecting the inside of the research facility, but Law would not allow Smoker inside. He states that he is alone on the island and if he sees Luffy or any of the Straw Hat Pirates, he would dispose of them.[74]

File:Law Lifts G-5 Warship.png

Law lifts the Marines' warship.

Sanji, Chopper, Franky, and Nami accompanied by the imprisoned guinea pig children suddenly come out through the door. Chopper sees and accuses Law of kidnapping the children. The Straw Hats and the children run back inside after seeing the Marines and Law insists that he did not even know that they were there, and that this is all a surprise to him. As the Marines prepare to chase after them, Law stood in their way. He uses his Devil Fruit power on the Marines' ship, lifts it out of the water, and turns it upside down. Law then tells Smoker that he cannot let him leave the island now. Smoker and Law then prepare to fight.[74]

Law was next seen apparently having severed Smoker's battleship in half and left one half fused to a mountain, while the other half remained on the ground, thereby depriving the Marines of any means of escape. He then turns around, saying that he cannot let the fleeing Straw Hats run away either and proceeds to swap their hearts around with Shambles. When the Marines tell Law that his Shichibukai status would be revoked if they report him to the government, Law does not seem fazed and simply uses "Scan" to steal all of their Den Den Mushi and says that he was not going to let them say a word of what they have seen to the World Government or to Headquarters. Smoker then attempts to attack him, but Law evades his attack and slashes. Smoker seems unaffected, but the Marines watching get sliced up instead. Tashigi then attempts to attack Law as well, but Law effortlessly slices her and her sword in half. Tashigi tells him that being sliced but not killed is a shame to a swordsman, but Law says that weaklings do not choose their method of death.[10]

Law Defeats Smoker

Law removing Smoker's heart.

Law then offers to slice Tashigi more as the G-5 Marines fire repeatedly at him in her defense, but they scream in shock as he effortlessly switches their ordinance with the snow falling above them. He attacks Tashigi once more but Smoker blocks him with his jitte, and the two of them engage each other. As they clash, Smoker demands answers from Law, some regarding on who Law is working for, indicating hidden motives. Law manages to gain the upper hand by stealing Smoker's heart with his Mes attack. While Smoker kneels in defeat, Law comments that he does not have to tell him anything. Luffy then arrives at the scene and is pleasantly surprised to see Law.[19]

Luffy quickly expresses his gratitude to Law for his help two years ago. Law merely states that he was just acting on a whim and tells Luffy that he will find something in the back of the research facility. He also tells him they both have something they want to get back. Law then goes back into the building, while still carrying Smoker's heart, and speaks to Caesar. Caesar demands an explanation for his actions, but Law replies that he is the one who should be complaining.[73]

He later gives a heart to Caesar, which he thinks belongs to Smoker. Caesar holds the heart in his hand, while Law looks on silently with a displeased look in his eyes and a frown. Law then asks what happened to Straw Hat, and Caesar reveals that having taken Monet's warning about the Straw Hats' possible increase in strength seriously, he sent two powerful people after them: the Hitmen of the Snowy Mountain, the Yeti Cool Brothers. When Monet informs Caesar about Law's association with Luffy at Sabaody Archipelago and Marineford, Caesar pulls a pistol on Law and questions him about his relationship to the notable pirate. Law denies having anything to do with the Straw Hats Pirates' presence on the island. Caesar then realizes that Law would not betray him, as he would not make things more complicated for them, after becoming a Shichibukai and coming to Punk Hazard. As Caesar is about to leave, Law asks him why the kids will not run away. Caesar tells him that he gave the kids the addicting drug NHC10, to which Law responds with disgust, he also points out that it reminds him of someone. After finishing talking to Caesar, Law heads to the back door of the facility and cuts down some of Caesar's troops along the way, remarking that he can go wherever he pleases.[21]

Law Cuts Scotch

Law cuts Scotch in half.

While Luffy and Franky are fighting against the Yeti Cool Brothers, Law appears and cuts Scotch in half. Scotch gets back up and comes at Law with a knife. Law jumps up and puts both hands on Scotch's chest. He emits an electric current, using a move called Counter Shock, causing Scotch to fall over in a burning heap. Nami thanks Law, but promptly retracts it and asks for her body back. As Luffy breaks Nami's chains with his teeth, Law tells him he wants to talk to Luffy about something. Even though his coming to the island might have been accidental, there is an important key lying dormant on the island that could throw the world into pandemonium. He goes on to say that there are only two ways to survive in the New World, either go under the safety umbrella of a Yonko, or consistently challenge them. Law says he knows Luffy is not the serving kind, which Luffy agrees with. Law then asks Luffy to form an alliance with him, all for the purpose of bringing down an Yonko.[75] When Luffy tries to comprehend how Law wants to defeat a Yonko, Law explains that he wants to think of a strategy and wait for the right chance. After asking Luffy again, Luffy responds that he wants to know which Yonko they are going to defeat.[22] Law states that he plans to defeat Kaido, which relieves Luffy because he does not want to go against Shanks first. Therefore, he agrees (much to Nami's protest), because he intends to beat all four of the Yonko.[25]

Returning with Luffy and the others to where the other Straw Hats (Chopper, Usopp and Robin) are staying, they too protest against an alliance stating that Law is suspicious and cannot be trusted. Declaring the alliance official, Luffy reaffirms his belief that Law is a good guy and that if he does betray them, then he would have to contest with Luffy and his crewmates that have spent two years training. Law watches impatiently as they continue to argue about whether they can trust each other.[22]

Afterwards, with the discussion on trust settled, he returns Franky and Chopper back into their original bodies, but is forced to leave Nami (much to Luffy, Chopper, and Usopp's amusement) in Sanji's body. Demanding her body back, Law simply states that he cannot unless her body is nearby.[22]

Quickly changing the subject to the children, he goes on to advise that the Straw Hats should simply leave the children behind, as they would be too much of a burden to bear and Caesar has them addicted to a drug in order to control them. After Chopper states that he knew that and points out that they have grown so big, Law explains that turning humans into giants is a World Government project that has been going on for hundreds of years. When Robin asks why they would do that, he guesses that it is an attempt to create powerful soldiers and that Caesar is continuing the research to beat the World Government and Vegapunk, even though it does not seem to be going very well. Law then asks them again if they really want to save the kids, since they do not even know them or where they are from. Chopper and Luffy both state that they want to and Luffy says that Law has to help them, if he wants an alliance. Luffy then adds that Sanji wants to hang on to the samurai, shocking Law as he was the one to cut him into pieces earlier. Usopp then tells Law about how his and Luffy's ideas about an alliance are probably very different, and that Luffy could be very stubborn and selfish.[22]

File:Chopper Tied to Law.png

Law ties the catatonic Chopper to his sheath to accompany him.

Law simply points out that their own wishes of helping the kids and Kin'emon are not part of the alliance, but quickly changes his mind and tells them to do something about the samurai while he goes to try and figure out what medicine the children were administered. Asking who their doctor is as he would need to accompany him, Law is then mortified as Chopper (still paralyzed and injured due to Luffy and Franky's earlier actions) was tied to the top to his hat by Usopp.[22]

Law instead opts to tying Chopper to his sword's sheath and informs the Straw Hats that Caesar wants to get rid of them and the White Hunter, and that he will keep attacking until he succeeds as they have uncovered his hidden base of operations. After he explains to them that Caesar is a scientist for the World Government gone rogue and his dangerous abilities requiring Haki to counter, Luffy asks him if kidnapping Caesar is all they have to do. Law confirms this, stating that the goal is not a ransom but instead "chaos". However as they have not achieved anything yet, he chooses to not inform them of any more of his plan and to just focus on capturing Caesar. He assures them though, that he will explain his plan to them in detail, but once they get to that point he warns them that things will begin to move very fast and that they cannot go back. Law gives Luffy one last chance to change his mind, Luffy, however, still wants to have the alliance and agrees to convince the rest of his crew of their intentions.[22]

Law later uses his Devil Fruit powers to warp himself and Chopper to the back side of the research facility to begin their part of the plan. They then discuss on how they can begin searching for the drugs. Law is then seen surprised when Luffy's group is launched into the middle of a battle between the G-5 Marines and Caesar's subordinates.[76]

He then enters the facility with Chopper hidden in his bag. He approaches Monet and asks her to come with him. Before leaving with Monet, Law leaves Chopper in the room. While walking in a hallway, Law suddenly collapses to the ground bleeding from the mouth. A mysterious person approaches and Law is alarmed to see him.[77]

Vergo Beats Down Law

Law being knocked out by Vergo.

The mysterious man is revealed to be Vergo who then explains to Law that "they" decided to send Monet to infiltrate Caesar's organization as they did not trust him. After Vergo recognizes Law's new status as a Shichibukai and tells him how he got to Punk Hazard, Law asks what he has done to receive this treatment from Vergo. He points out to Law that if he had done something, he would already be dead and that he cannot hide anything from adults. Law decides that he has to get rid of Vergo, who responds by knocking Law unconscious while telling Law to address him with more respect.[35]

Law is later seen locked in a cage with kairoseki chains, along with Luffy, Robin, Franky, Smoker and Tashigi. There Law reveals Vergo as one of Joker's most trusted men, who became a Marine on Joker's orders. Luffy then asks Law who Joker is, and Law explains that it is Donquixote Doflamingo, whom he was once a subordinate of.[5]

While Caesar is giving his broadcast to the underworld brokers about his experiment with his chemical weapon of mass destruction, Law and the other captives are just sitting passively. Caesar then confronts Law about his treachery. He reminds Law that when he arrived, they made a promise, Caesar would let Law have Monet's heart if Law gives up his own heart. So Caesar gave the heart to Vergo, and if Law tries to do anything against Caesar, he could just squeeze Law's heart. Vergo then gives his heart a tiny squeeze, and Law is seen in massive pain. While Caesar mocks Law about the deal he forced him to make when he came to the island, Law just mocks him stating he should have been more cautious of Monet rather than him and calls Caesar stupid which results in Caesar squeezing Law's heart and Law passing out from the agony.[78]

When Smiley eats what appears to be a giant piece of candy, it transforms into a giant cloud of poison. After explaining about the effects of the gas, Caesar sends Law, Smoker, Tashigi and Luffy's group outside of the facility to die as the poison cloud engulfs the island. Law then tells Luffy that it is time for a counterattack.[79]

Punk Hazard Counter Attack Begins

The counterattack begins.

Law then asks if there is anyone capable of producing fire. Franky affirms that he can and is directed to launch his Franky Fireball at the segregated battleship down below. Setting the wood ablaze, the smoke then rises up to the cage allowing for them to discreetly take action. Law quickly reveals that he had replaced some of the sea stone handcuffs with regular ones allowing for him to escape easily. Freeing Luffy and the others, Law then coerces Smoker and Tashigi into working together with the group after returning them to their own bodies. As Law is freeing Smoker, he tells him not to touch Caesar until he recovers his heart from Vergo.[80]

Before he can reveal his next step however, Law is immediately distracted by Luffy calling out from outside the cage with Robin. After Law yells at him not to act independently, they then later move into the laboratory thanks to Law's power. They open the shutters, allowing everyone outside to escape the poison gas.[80]

Once everyone is safe from the poison cloud, Law tells Smoker and Tashigi not to get in his and Luffy's way. Nami quickly demands that Law switch back her and Sanji's bodies. Law complies and switches them back. Law then tells everyone present that they need to find a door with "R Building 66" on it. He says that they all have two hours to escape. Luffy asks him what is going to happen and Law replies that he will do something to make the base unsafe. Everyone then departs with different objectives.[81]

Law then makes his way to the SAD manufacturing room inside the D Building with plans to make a mess in the New World. Once inside the manufacturing room, he stands in front of a giant SAD Tank with a grin on his face.[28] Law is then confronted by Vergo. Law attempts to use his Devil Fruit ability to retrieve his heart, but Vergo steals it back from him and brutally beats him to the ground by using his heart to immobilize the Shichibukai. Law manages to hit Vergo with a Counter Shock, but the attack is ineffective. Law tells Vergo that he is the one miscalculation in his plan. Vergo prepares to finish off Law, but Smoker then appears and the two begin to fight.[82]

Law defeats Vergo.

During the battle between Smoker and Vergo, the former was able use his Devil Fruit abilities to secure Law's heart despite the latter's Haki. No longer at a serious disadvantage, Law prepares to cut down Vergo while calling out to Doflamingo who is revealed to have been monitoring the situation via a miniature Den Den Mushi. Law starts taunting Doflamingo, saying that his overconfidence will be his undoing. Doflamingo, in turn, reminds his former subordinate of a beating Vergo had given him in the past and his inability to defend himself. Law then shocks his fellow Shichibukai by easily cutting down Vergo and the wake of his attack cuts the laboratory and surrounding mountains in two.[34] Law then proceeds to slice Vergo into more pieces and attach them to a railing. Vergo then tries to warn Law about Doflamingo until Law cuts his face in half. As Law and Smoker are leaving, Law informs Vergo that the SAD room will explode.[83]

Law and Smoker later find a rail car in the corridor between Building D and R. They are soon reunited with the Straw Hats, the kidnapped children, and the G-5 Marines. When Luffy tells Law that he sent Caesar flying, Law scolds him for not following the plan of capturing him and opted to capture Caesar himself.[84]

Punk Hazard Allies Confront Baby 5 and Buffalo

Law, the Straw Hats, and the G-5 Marines emerge.

Law and the others are still waiting for all the Straw Hats to come on board. Luffy says that they will not budge until every member of the Straw Hats has arrived. They make it just in time and they all finally get in the rail car.[85] After it is revealed that Smoker got his heart back, he asks Law what made Caesar think that he had his heart. Law then reveals that he never gave Smoker's heart to Caesar in the first place and he gave Monet's heart instead. The trolley soon reaches the exit.[36]

Once outside, they find Buffalo and Baby 5 after they were just fighting Franky in his Franky Shogun. Realizing their sudden disadvantage, Buffalo and Baby 5 grab Caesar and start to make a hasty retreat. As they flee through the sky, Law prepares to stop them himself, but Usopp and Nami insist that they handle the escaping pair themselves. Nami creates an enormous thundercloud above the pair which shocks them with a lighting strike. The attack knocks out Baby 5 as she, Buffalo, and Caesar fall out of the sky. Usopp quickly takes Buffalo out by firing multiple projectiles at him. Caesar decides to escape to Dressrosa by himself, but Usopp fires kairoseki handcuffs at him. The cuffs catch Caesar around the neck and negate his Devil Fruit powers. As the three fall into the ocean, Law declares the first step of his plan complete.[26]

After the battles were finally over, Law started treating the kids. He used his power to dismember the children and systematically removed the NHC10 out of their bodies. Upon finishing the treatment, a worried Chopper showed up, and called him a murderer and asked him what he did to the kids. After he told Chopper to leave him alone, he gave Chopper a graphic answer, which shocked him. When everyone started celebrating, Law told Luffy that they must not waste time anymore. However, Luffy encouraged everyone to party more, which shocked Law. He soon joined the party though and had a cup of soup together with Smoker. When Smoker suggested that Law is probably using Luffy for something, Law responded that he is not sure who is using who. It is then revealed by in a flashback, that Law formed an alliance with Luffy, to take down the Yonko, Kaido.[25] Law advised Luffy not to underestimate the Yonko, as they once competed with Whitebeard for territory,[30] and continued by saying that the chance of success is only 30%,[30] but Luffy accepted anyway.[30]

Later, after Doflamingo stumbled upon the raft with Buffalo and Baby 5's severed heads, Law contacted Doflamingo via a Den Den Mushi. Law told Doflamingo that without Caesar and his SMILE trade, Kaido would execute Doflamingo. In order to get Caesar back, Law told Doflamingo that he would have to resign from his position as a Shichibukai by the time the next newspaper came out and hung up.[30]

After leaving the island, Law found himself in the company of the Straw Hats along with Kin'emon and his son. As they began sailing down a 'Sea Slope' he told them that these are common to find, which put Usopp into disbelief. As the rest learned of their next destination being Dressrosa, he said their strategy is in motion. Luffy informed them of their alliance with the Shichibukai to take down Kaido, with mixed reactions from the crew. Sanji warned Law that his idea of an alliance will be different from what Luffy intends. Law explained to everyone how the powerful pirates rule certain territories with large crews and organizations.[86] He then said he intends to disrupt Doflamingo's rule over the criminal underworld and to decimate Kaido's forces as much as possible by stopping the production of the SAD and the creation of Artificial Devil Fruits. Law revealed that Kaido has about 500 synthetic fruit users in his disposal, but that number will not be growing any time soon due to the capture of Caesar.[87]

When Chopper acknowledged Caesar Clown's achievements in creating the artificial devil fruits, Law told them it was Vegapunk who discovered it. Law then told the crew that their next step was to destroy the factory producing the SAD in Dressrosa and urged them all to not let their guards down.[87]

Caesar Retrieval Arc

The following events are Non-Canon and therefore not considered part of the Canon story.

Law was seen drifting off to sleep, when Breed's attack on the Thousand Sunny woke him up. He witnessed Breed's forces invade the ship, and helped to fight against them. Upon Breed's arrival, Law listened as he told everybody who he was and why he was there. When Law realized that one of Breed's pets had kidnapped Caesar Clown, Law screamed out in shock.[88]

After Breed's departure, Law and everyone else on board held on to the ship as it jumped into the air due to the size of Breed's ship. After the Thousand Sunny had finally stopped jumping, Law, Luffy, and Chopper jumped into the Shark Submerge, and followed the invaders back to Breed's ship, where Law expressed his fear that Breed might be working for Doflamingo. While in the shark submerge, Law, Chopper, and Luffy discussed the situation, and Law stated that the creatures in the water were Sea Lapahns, which were native to the North Blue.[88]

As they entered the enemy ship, Law scolded Luffy for being too loud, since they did not want the enemy to know that they were there. The three walked into a dome like room, and encountered more of Breed's pets. They fought off the pets, which caused them to snap out of Breed's control. One of the animals, a Kung-Fu Dugong from Alabasta, explained the situation via Chopper's interpretation, telling them how Breed had kidnapped them in order to do his bidding.[88]

Suddenly, Breed entered the room, and ordered the animals to attack the three. Breed then threw one of his control collars at them and while Luffy and Law were able to dodge it, Chopper was unable to do so. Breed took Chopper under his control and ordered him to defeat Luffy and Law, which caused Chopper to eat a rumble ball, go into his monster point form and attack his friends against his will. Law then attempted to use his room ability to stop Chopper's rampage, but Luffy jumped onto him and prevented him from hurting his crewmate. Breed, taking advantage of their distraction, managed to put a collar on both Luffy and Law, which caused Law to scream out in shock. Law and Luffy then looked on in anger as Breed boasted about his success.[88]

Shortly after, Law and Luffy were imprisoned in a Kairoseki cell. After Luffy declared that pirates do not follow orders, Breed brought Luffy and Law to a circus-like chamber, where he ordered them to fight each other to the death (without using Devil Fruits). They battled for several minutes until the Kung-Fu Dugong was able to stop the fight. After the dugong made his own speech to Breed, Breed ordered him to kill Luffy and Law himself. Luffy and Law did nothing as the dugong attacked them, and the struggle concluded when the dugong forced the two through the wall and into the sea.[89]

However, it is later revealed Law used his powers to save himself and Luffy, bringing them to the lobby chamber of Breed's ship, where they were just in time to stop Caesar from getting away. When they returned to Breed's circus chamber, Law revealed to have seen through the weakness of Breed's powers: Law knew that Breed's orders wouldn't work if they couldn't hear him, so Law put earplugs in his ears and, during the forced fight between him and Luffy, Law wasn't actually possessed. Soon after, Breed revealed the true extent of his Devil Fruit powers, but was shortly defeated by Luffy and the dugong. Law and the Straw Hats returned to the Sunny, where the dugong and his Sea Animal Pirates said their farewells.[90]

Dressrosa Arc

When the morning newspaper came, everyone read it and Law was pleased that the paper stated that Doflamingo resigned from the Shichibukai. They also saw that the paper revealed the alliance between Law and Luffy and showed that Kid, Hawkins, and Apoo had formed an alliance as well. Law was unconcerned with the other pirate alliance and remained focused on the next objective.[91] Law then contacted Doflamingo to inform him that he would return Caesar as promised. He allowed Caesar to speak so Doflamingo can confirm his safety. He then told Doflamingo that he can pick up Caesar at Green Bit, an island north of Dressrosa.[23]

After hanging up, Law and the Straw Hats start plotting on how to destroy the SMILE factory on Dressrosa. Sanji is concerned about how many men Doflamingo will bring, but Law says that is not an issue. Law further states that Caesar's return is just a ploy to create an opportunity to locate and eliminate the factory. Law is worried because acquiring the information on the factory was rather difficult. Luffy becomes excited and Law is shocked at how carefree he is.[23]

While having a meal with the crew, Law and Kin'emon talk about a place called Zo. Law reveals that his crew resides there. Law then listens to Kin'emon and Momonosuke's story about how they were shipwrecked and drifted to Dressrosa as well as how Momonosuke was separated from his father. After hearing about how Kanjuro helped Kin'emon escape from Doflamingo's men, Luffy declares that they should save him too. Law tells Luffy not to get distracted. The Thousand Sunny later approaches Dressrosa.[23]

Law, Caesar, and Straw Hats in Disguise

Law and his group incognito.

After disembarking, Law gives Nami a Vivre Card that points to Zo. He instructs her to use it in case anything happens. The group splits into three teams and Law is part of the team that will deliver Caesar to Green Bit. Much to his annoyance, he sees that Luffy's group has already gone ahead into Dressrosa.[92]

Law's group stops by at a northeastern cafe near the bridge wearing disguises like Luffy's group. There, they get information on the passage to Green Bit, learning that the bridge is surrounded by fighting fish that can even destroy iron. The man they were talking to warned them that no one who crossed the bridge to Green Bit has returned. Usopp freaked out and suggested to deliver Caesar somewhere else, but Law remains firm in his decision. The one thing that worries Law is that the country seems too peaceful even after Doflamingo resigned as king and commented that things are not going as he expected. They then spotted CP-0 walking by and Law wonders what they were doing in Dressrosa. Robin tells Usopp that they are the highest intelligence agency and that nothing good happens when they appear, to which Law agrees.[93]

As Law's group crosses the bridge, they are attacked by the fighting fishes. Law allows Caesar to be released from his handcuffs so he can help fight off the fishes. He also reveals that he holds Caesar's heart as insurance. Since the use of his devil fruit powers deplete his strength the more he uses it, Law tasks Usopp, Robin, and Caesar with defending the bridge, wanting to save all of his strength should he confront Doflamingo. Despite the group's efforts, the bridge is destroyed. A fighting fish attack them from the front, but it is then caught by some unknown people. The group then uses Caesar to fly to the other side.[46] After reaching Green Bit, they discover a Marine Ship on the island, indicating that there are Marines present.[94]

While Usopp and Robin scout the island, Law and Caesar proceed to the exchange site at the southern beach. Two minutes before the exchange time, Law is suddenly contacted by Sanji.[95] To Law's surprise, Doflamingo never quit the Shichibukai. Sanji warns Law to get out of Green Bit as Doflamingo and Admiral Fujitora close in. However, Law notes that it is already too late.[96]

Green Bit Confrontation

Law and Caesar confronted by the Marines and Doflamingo.

Robin creates a copy of her upper body above ground and tells Law that she and Usopp are trapped underground but are still fine. Right after Robin urged Law to get off the island, Fujitora and Doflamingo arrive at the exchange site. Law tells Doflamingo that he has become aware of his deception and is surprised that he was able to use the powers of the World Government. After saying that only the World Nobles can trick the whole world, Law suddenly remembers Vergo telling him about not knowing about Doflamingo's past. Doflamingo just says that its way more complicated and that he really wants to kill Law.[97]

Since the deal was off, Law refused to release Caesar. Fujitora then turned his attention to Law and stated that Law would be forgiven if the Straw Hats were his subordinates. After Law declared that he and Luffy are indeed in an alliance, Fujitora took away Law's title and used his gravity ability to bring down a meteor. Before the meteor impacts, Law, Fujitora, and Doflamingo used their abilities to reduce the meteor to pieces. After emerging unscathed, Law, Fujitora, and Doflamingo face each other in a three-way confrontation.[3]

Issho Leaves Footholds Standing

Law vs Doflamingo vs Fujitora

As the battle went on, Law is having a hard time holding his own against Fujitora's attacks. He tries to contact Nami but receives no answer.[98] When he eventually manages to contact Nami, Chopper, and Brook, he ignores their pleas for help and orders them to bring the Thousand Sunny to Green Bit. In the meantime, Law is directly confronted by Doflamingo, who demands that he return Caesar's heart, informs him that Luffy has fallen for a trap at the Corrida Colosseum, and tells him to surrender.[99]

Law was then defeated in his battle against Doflamingo and Issho. As he lied injured on the ground, Doflamingo explained to him about the history of the Donquixote Family, such as them being one of the Twenty Kingdoms that founded the World Government.[100] He went on to explain that he was once a World Noble but not anymore.[101]

As Caesar ran towards Doflamingo, begging him to return his heart, Law stated that he never said that the heart belonged to Caesar. Doflamingo then realized that the heart belonged to a Marine instead. While Issho was distracted, Law used Room to escape. He then grabbed Caesar and made a run for it. He fled towards the bridge, planning on handing Caesar to Nami's group as soon as they arrived to Green Bit and then holding back Doflamingo long enough for them to escape. When Doflamingo saw the Thousand Sunny, he saw through Law's plan and decided to attack the ship instead. Before Doflamingo could reach the ship, Sanji intercepted him.[101]

Despite Sanji's best efforts to fend off Doflamingo, he was soon immobilized by Doflamingo's strings. When Doflamingo was about to deal a lethal blow to Sanji, Law intervened by using Shambles and teleported Sanji, Caesar, and himself to the Thousand Sunny. Law asked Sanji about the status of the operation in Dressrosa only to learn that Zoro's group needed more time. Law revealed that he had Caesar's heart inside of him and Law's heart was hidden in the Thousand Sunny. After giving Caesar back his heart, Law instructed Nami's group to head for Zo. Nami's group was reluctant to leave behind the other Straw Hats, but they complied when they were assaulted by a flying Marine battleship, led by Fujitora, and another one of Doflamingo's hand whips. Sanji noticed that Law was so fixated on Doflamingo when the plan's true objective was supposed to be defeating Kaido. After blocking an attack from Doflamingo, Law informed the Straw Hats about Doflamingo's Devil Fruit powers and instructed them to go to a place without clouds. Law then took Jora hostage, giving Nami's group enough time to escape using Coup de Burst.[48]

Once the Straw Hats escaped with Caesar Clown and the Marines head for Dressrosa, Law and Doflamingo have a face off at the iron bridge. Law then told his former leader that he is ending his alliance with the Straw Hats, because once they stop the production of SMILE, Kaido will target Doflamingo. Law also revealed that his goal was to make Doflamingo pay for what he did 13 years ago, even if it will cost him his life.[48]

After releasing Jora, Law stated that he was not fighting Doflamingo for revenge but for the will of someone else. Law and Doflamingo then clashed, destroying the iron bridge in the process.[102]

As they clash, Law uses Mes and nicked Doflamingo's cheek as he manuevers out of the way. He retaliates with a powerful kick launching Law into the air. Doflamingo uses his string ability, pelting Law with tiny bullets. Doflamingo taunts Law, offering him advice to flee into Dressrosa for cover.[40]

Doflamingo Shoots Law

Doflamingo shoots Law.

Diamante suddenly contacts Doflamingo via Den Den Mushi and informs him about Violet's betrayal. Doflamingo then orders him to send Lao G to guard the SMILE factory. Doflamingo begins questioning Law's plan, stating that he overestimated the amount of time he'd be able to distract him from their mission. He asks why he was putting so much trust in them even though he was using them. Law responds that he believes that "D" will bring forth another storm.[40]

The battle rages across Dressrosa and ends in front of the Corrida Colosseum with Law ultimately defeated by Doflamingo. Infuriated at his defiance, Doflamingo fires off three shots into Law from a flintlock. Before Law falls unconscious, he thinks of an individual named Cora.[40]

After blaming the lies about leaving Dressrosa's throne on Law, Zoro and Kin'emon rushed to save Law. Zoro was intercepted by Issho and Doflamingo kicked Kin'emon away when he was about to grab Law. Doflamingo then picked Law from the ground and headed for the palace alongside Issho, stating that it is his responsibility to "educate" Law. Luffy, who sensed Law was still alive, declared his intention to go after Doflamingo and save his ally.[103]

Law was later seen in the palace, still unconscious and chained to the heart seat; presumably using Kairoseki chains and cuffs.[104]

After Law regained consciousness, Doflamingo interrogated him about the Straw Hats' connection with the dwarves from Green Bit and them targeting Sugar. Baby 5 slapped Law and demanded that he answered Doflamingo. Law scared her away by giving her a glare. He then reminded Doflamingo that he had ended his alliance with the Straw Hats and knew nothing about their intentions.[105]

When the toys in the country transformed back into their original forms, Law witnessed Kyros decapitating Doflamingo.[106]

Luffy and Viola then rushed into the room to free Law. Law told Luffy that their alliance was over, but Luffy ignored him. The rescue was interrupted by Pica's sudden appearance and the revelation that Doflamingo was still alive. Law was horrified when Doflamingo decided to implement a plan known as the "Birdcage".[107]

After a brief battle between Luffy and Doflamingo, Pica threw Law, Luffy, Kyros, Viola, and Riku Dold III out of the palace. Law watched in terror as Doflamingo trapped Dressrosa in his "Birdcage" and stated that Doflamingo intended to kill everyone on Dressrosa before the truth gets out.[108]

Pica relocated the royal palace to the top of the Flower Hill and Doflamingo forced everyone into a survival game and put a price on the heads of twelve people. Law and the Straw Hats were included in Doflamingo's hit list. When Luffy declared that he will defeat Doflamingo and end his game, Law objected at first, saying that if they kill Doflamingo, Kaido's rage for losing the SMILE factory will be directed towards the Straw Hat and Heart Pirates alliance instead. Luffy told Law that with the country in chaos, they have to stop Doflamingo themselves. Luffy then grabbed Law and Zoro and pursued Doflamingo.[4]

Luffy jumped down from the King's Plateau and they landed in the middle of a crowd of enemies, making Law annoyed with Luffy's antics even further. After a brief scuffle with Senor Pink, Machvise, and Dellinger, Law and his group were attacked by the Dressrosa citizens. Issho soon arrived to confront them and Pica later joined the fray as a massive stone giant.[109]

Luffy and the Corrida Colosseum Gladiators Going After Doflamingo

Law riding on Ucy as Luffy and his allies prepare to go after Doflamingo

When Luffy made Pica angry by laughing at his high-pitch voice, the elite officer threw a punch which sent Luffy, Zoro, and Law flying to the square in front of the colosseum. They were soon approached by Cavendish, who briefly tried to vent his rage over losing his popularity at Law. After Cavendish returned Law's hat, they were then joined by those who also wished to fight Doflamingo: the Chinjao Family, Hajrudin, Elizabello II, Dagama, Abdullah, Jeet, Orlumbus, Ideo, Suleiman, and Blue Gilly. After Fighting Bull joined the group, they marched towards the royal palace and began to battle against Pica.[110]

When Pica strikes, Chinjao and Elizabello II shattered his hand, enabling the group to move forward.[111] Pica then attacked with his other arm, causing some of the allies to fall back. However, Law, Luffy, Zoro, Abdullah, Jeet, and Fighting Bull managed to jump on and climbed up Pica's arm. After Luffy destroyed Pica's stone head and Zoro intercepted the real Pica on the stone arm, Law revealed to Luffy that the plan to defeat Kaido was a trick to get revenge on Doflamingo for killing Corazon, an ex-head of the Donquixote Family, Doflamingo's brother, and Law's benefactor.[112]

Law, Luffy, Fighting Bull, Abdullah, and Jeet eventually reached the first level of the new King's Plateau.[113] While they charged through Doflamingo's troops, Kelly Funk (while fused with Bobby Funk) appeared seemingly to aid them. Law asked Luffy what to do about his kairoseki handcuffs, but Luffy assured him that things will work out. Kelly then showed them a tunnel that is supposed to go directly to the fourth level. While entering the tunnel, Law and Luffy were shocked to see Abdullah and Jeet fell off. After leaving those two behind, Law and Luffy were contacted by Robin through Den Den Mushi. Robin informed them that she will meet them at the fourth level. Law, Luffy, and Fighting Bull later reached a dead end. While Fighting Bull stood on top of a pool of water, a string clone of Doflamingo appeared behind them.[114]

The clone attacked Fighting Bull with bullet thread, knocking him unconscious. As the bull collapsed, Law and Luffy fell into the water and became powerless. Before the clone could kill them, Abdullah and Jeet struck the clone from behind, destroying it. After recovering, Luffy punched a hole to the second level with Elephant Gun and carried Law with him as he moved ahead of the allied colosseum fighters.[18]

Cavendish then approached Law and Luffy and allowed them to ride on his horse. During the fray, they were joined by Kyros. When the other colosseum fighters banded together, they created an opening for them to go through.[115]

While Farul charged towards the third level, Law, Luffy, Cavendish, and Kyros briefly argued over who will be the one to defeat Doflamingo. Once they reached the third level, they found giant toy soldiers standing in their way.[116]

One of the toys bit Farul on the head, gravely injuring the horse. Law's group prepared to battle the toys when Robin, Bartolomeo, and Gladius fell from the sky and landed in front of them. Robin and Bartolomeo held back Gladius and the toys to enable Law's group to continue towards the fourth level, where Rebecca would be waiting with the keys to Law's cuffs.[117]

Bartolomeo used his ability to create a stairway to the fourth level. Kyros went ahead, but Luffy and Law soon caught up. Once they reached the sunflower field, Rebecca quickly gave them the keys to Law's handcuffs. After removing the handcuffs, Law disposed of the giant toys that came after them. Kyros then told Law and Luffy to go ahead while he fights Diamante.[118]

Diamante tried to stop Law and Luffy as they were going to the palace, but Law teleported himself and Luffy to the palace pool garden. They were then approached by Sugar. Apparently unaware of Sugar's ability, Law did not take any caution. Just as she got close to the two, Usopp sniped at her from the old King's Plateau and made her lose consciousness, saving both Law and Luffy. With Sugar out of the way, Law and Luffy finally reached Doflamingo.[119]

When Luffy was enraged after seeing how Doflamingo treated Bellamy like trash, Law warned him not to let his emotions get the better of him. Doflamingo then created another string clone to fight Law while controlling Bellamy to fight Luffy. Luffy then unexpectedly aimed an attack at Law. Law quickly activated Room and used Shambles to switch places with Doflamingo, allowing Luffy to strike the Shichibukai with Red Hawk. While sitting on Doflamingo's chair, Law sliced Trébol who was standing behind the throne the whole time, into lateral slices with Radio Knife.[120]

After telling Trébol that his Radio Knife prevents him from reattaching, Law prepared to attack the Beta Beta no Mi user with Injection Shot. Doflamingo, having recovered from Luffy's attack, intercepted Law and incapacitated him with Fulbright. After Luffy was knocked down, Law listened to Doflamingo as he explained how his family lost their status as World Nobles.[121]

Law then questioned Doflamingo about how he had authority to control CP-0. Doflamingo revealed that he had knowledge of a secret National Treasure. Since the World Nobles could not kill him, they became cooperative. Doflamingo then explained that Law's Ope Ope no Mi had the power to make someone immortal at the cost of the user's own life. As he and Doflamingo clashed, Doflamingo revealed that he never intended for Law to have the fruit in the first place. Law declared that he would use the fruit's power to destroy Doflamingo and his crew.[41]

Anime and Manga Differences

Appearance

When he was first introduced in the manga, Law had tattoos on only four of his left hand's fingers. In the anime, all five fingers have a tattoo. Later in the manga, during the Marineford arc, all five fingers are tattooed as well.[14]

Sabaody Archipelago Arc

Originally in the manga, when Law met Kid in the auction house, he notably showed Kid his middle finger. In the anime, this was censored with Law simply giving Kid a smug look.[32][122]

When Law, Kid, and their respective crews encountered a Pacifista, it is not specified whether this one was Kuma or not in the manga and the scene ends with a cliffhanger. In the anime, this one was a regular Pacifista and the pirates were given some scenes fighting it. When it seemed that they defeated the Pacifista, it got back up and resumed its attack, essentially leaving the same cliffhanger as in the manga.

Law's Middle Finger Uncensored

Post-War Arc

Law and his crew's interaction with the Kuja are also added in the anime. When they arrive on Amazon Lily, they enter the harbor with the Kuja ship only to be met with initial hostility by the Kuja islanders until Boa Hancock stops them. When Elder Nyon clearly states that men are forbidden on the island and the Kujas must uphold the law, Law and Jinbe manage to convince Nyon that Law is needed to treat Luffy's wounds. After forming a compromise, the Heart Pirates are allowed to dock at the bay.

During the Timeskip

File:Law Delivers 100 Hearts.png

A scene shown in the anime depicting Law sending a box with 100 pirates' hearts.

In the anime, a flashback showing him sending the 100 pirates' hearts to the Marines is added. In the manga, this fact is only mentioned.

  • This sequence contradicts Law's former bounty poster, which depicts him already wearing his new clothes before attaining his Shichibukai status.

Translation and Dub Issues

When referring to others, Law adds "ya" (?) to their name or epithet. In English, it can be translated as "Mr.", though "ya" does not denote courteousness and is generally used when referring to someone's profession. However, he has rarely used "san" to refer to certain characters, such as with Corazon and sarcastically with Vergo.[40][123]

Trivia

  • His name may have multiple origins:
    • "Law" is derived from real life pirate Edward Low.[124] Law's apparently infamous cruelty echoes Edward Low's own reputation for violently torturing victims before killing them.
    • Trafalgar is the name of a cape in the south-west of Spain. Its name is Arabic in origin, meaning "Western Cape". It was the site of a famous naval battle between the British and the French/Spanish fleet during the Napoleonic Wars, dubbed the Battle of Trafalgar. London's landmark Trafalgar Square is named for the battle, as is a class of submarines in the British Royal Navy.
    • "Water Law", as well his fight with Wellington, may be a reference to Waterloo, the place in where, on 18 June 1815, was fought the final battle of the Napoleonic Wars which represented the ultimate defeat of Napoleon at the hands of the Seventh Coalition. The British commander at Waterloo, Arthur Wellesley, was the duke of Wellington.
  • Law's birthday, October 6th, is a reference to his name, as to can mean 10 and ro can mean 6, Torafarugā . He shares his birthday with Tashigi.
  • Law has the highest known bounty of all the Shichibukai so far.
  • Though he bears no animal theme, as the first seven known Shichibukai, Luffy's way of addressing Law as "Torao" sounds like Tora which means "tiger" in Japanese.
  • At 26 years-old, he is the youngest Shichibukai.
    • He is also tied with Boa Hancock for being the shortest, at 191 cm (although Buggy's height has not been made official).
  • When Brannew introduces the Shichibukai in the Chapter 700, Law is credited as "the mastermind behind the Rocky Port Incident (ロッキーポート事件, Rokkī Pōto Jiken?)". No information about this event has been revealed so far.[23]
  • Ironically, his wanted poster shows Bepo appearing in the background with his head turned in the same position and stance as Usopp in Luffy's poster.
  • According to the 4th Japanese Fan Poll, Law is the 10th most popular character in One Piece, making him the most popular Supernova excluding Luffy and Zoro.[125]
  • Law uses the "smiley" style of Jolly Roger, as first seen used by his former superior Donquixote Doflamingo. But unlike Doflamingo's smiley, his does not have a "cancel" sign across it. While the significance of the smilie is still unknown, this means whatever it represents, Law supports it.
  • Buffalo mentioned that Law was in line for "Heart seat" as Doflamingo's ally.[26] The vacant seat was later seen in Chapter 700, along with the occupied Spade, Club and Diamond seats.[23]
  • Law's character song, which was released as a bonus song on the One Piece Log Collection - Sabaody CD is called Dr. Heart Stealer. This is likely a reference to the hearts of 100 pirates he obtained in order to become a member of the Shichibukai or his ability Mes which he used to remove people's hearts from their bodies.
