Toys are normally just man-made playthings for children, but on the island of Dressrosa, toys were living beings capable of independent action and human behavior who coexisted alongside humans. They were first introduced in the town of Acacia.

In actuality, the toys of Dressrosa were human beings and animals who were turned into toys by Sugar, using to the power of Hobi Hobi no Mi, who came to the island ten years before the current timeline with the Donquixote Pirates. Only the toys themselves have any memory of them being human, while everyone else they knew completely forgot about them, even each other, no matter how close their previous relationship was.[1]

After Sugar was startled by Usopp and passed out, her power was undone and all the toys in Dressrosa returned to their original forms, and everyone regained their memories of the transformed people.

Appearance[]

The living toys of Dressrosa, much like ordinary toys, come in a large variety of forms, sizes, and appearances. Many of them resemble marionettes, toy soldiers, dolls, stuffed animals, robots, and other common forms of toys. They also seem to be made of different materials, depending on what toy they are, ranging from metal and wood, to even cloth with cotton stuffing. Toys come in a great variety of sizes, some can be so small that their head stops below a person’s knees, while others can be even taller that humans, though most toys are about the size of a young human child.

Toys bear no resemblance to their original form, regardless of their race or species, looking completely different from the way they used to and their size will likely not even match their original height. Dwarves however seem to stay the same size if they are turned into toys and individuals who have lost a limb will continue to be without it, even after transforming.

In addition to individual toys, there exists Headcracker Dolls (頭割り人形, Atamawari Ningyō?), large nutcracker dolls. They are formed by Sugar transforming eight people into a single toy, with each person representing a different part of the toy; one for the head, one for the jaws, one for each arm, two for the body and one for each leg.[2] They possess tremendous durability, being able to reattach their own decapitated heads, and biting power, crushing Farul's skull in a single bite.

The following events are Non-Canon and therefore not considered part of the Canon story.

In One Piece Odyssey, there are two artificial toy types, the Shockcracker Dolls (頭ビリ人形, Atama Biri Ningyō?) and Mechanical Dolls (からくり人形, Karakuri Ningyō?) that were created by a Donquixote Pirates engineer. They are both based on the Headcracker Dolls.

  • Thanks to Doflamingo's connections, Shockcracker Dolls use the latest in military technology, and mechanisms installed in their hats that allow them to shoot electric bullets from their heads based upon the Pacifista laser, which, while making them powerful weapons, also makes them expensive to produce.
  • Mechanical Dolls are smaller & less powerful than Sugar's Headcrackers but move more quickly and often attack in groups, indicating they are cheaper to produce than Shockcracker Dolls.

Concludes non-canon section.

Inter-species Relationships[]

Living toys are only seen on Dressrosa and appear to live happily with its human inhabitants, coexisting without difficulty and some humans and toys are even seen walking together arm-in-arm.[3] Even the toy children are seen together with human children and are treated like regular kids by the guards.[4] However, the peace between them is just an illusion, as the toys' behavior is completely decided by the contract Sugar placed on them, with many, if not all toys actually being miserable individuals incapable of truly interacting with other humans or former loved ones, and other toys actually being wild animals who've been made to act like intelligent toys.

Under Doflamingo's rule, it was a strongly enforced law in Dressrosa that no toys must ever enter a human's house, and no human must ever enter a toy's house, a rule that was likely meant to avoid any suspicion about the true nature of toys.[1]

Wanting to return every toy to their original forms, Thunder Soldier joined forces with the Tontatta Kingdom in an attempt to overthrow the Donquixote Family.[5] When Sugar was finally scared into unconsciousness, every toy that was still alive returned to their true forms, with families and friends reuniting and pirates and wild animals running rampant. The Donquixote Pirates became the target of the victims' revenge and hate.[6]

Beliefs[]

People who have been turned into toys by Sugar retain their consciousness and memories from before they were transformed, however they lost their free will and personalities once Sugar gave them the conditions of their contract. Some toys did manage to escape before Sugar was able to subjugate them, thus they retained their original identity and free will.[7][1] Animals who have been turned into toys and forced into a contract by Sugar are capable of acting and speaking like humans, as shown with many of the toys attending the Corrida Colosseum who were revealed to be wild and savage animals after Sugar was incapacitated.[6]

Toys, along with the human citizens of Dressrosa, believe in the existence of fairies which have been an important part of their lore for as long as they can remember and because of this they revere them as deities. Their "fairies" are responsible for the random thefts that occur on their island,[8] but they do not mind this at all due to their reverence of them, however after finding out that the fairies were actually dwarves it is unknown how their feelings towards them regarding their thefts have changed.[9] According to Thunder Soldier, toys believe that they are supposed to make people laugh and that there is no such thing as a serious toy.[10]

Any toys who express their human side are diagnosed with "Human Illness" (人間病, Ningen-byō?) and are thrown into the scrap heap.[1]

Trivia[]

Monkey D

Luffy as a toy in Usopp's imagination.

  • In the anime, when Sugar confronted an unsuspecting Luffy and Law, Usopp's fear of missing his target caused him to imagine Luffy being turned into a toy.
