For the chapter of the same name, see Chapter 761.

The Ope Ope no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit whose ability is to create a spherical domain in which the user can freely rearrange, take apart (without harm), and generally remodel the structure/anatomy of anything and anyone (themself included) in a "surgical" way, making the user a Free Modification Human (改造自在人間, Kaizō Jizai Ningen?).[4] The fruit was eaten by Trafalgar D. Water Law, having been force-fed to him by Donquixote Rosinante. Before Law, the fruit's powers were held by a certain famous doctor.[3]

The Ope Ope no Mi's power was first seen during the Sabaody Archipelago Arc,[2] but the fruit was not named or explained in any way until the Punk Hazard Arc.[4]

The Ope Ope no Mi is famed and coveted for letting the ability user perform miraculous surgeries, cure untreatable illnesses, and circumvent physical disabilities. It is also called the "Ultimate Devil Fruit" (究極の悪魔の実, Kyūkyoku no Akuma no Mi?) for its capacity to grant another person eternal youth in exchange for the ability user's own life,[5] which is why the Marines were willing to pay as much as Beli5,000,000,000 to buy the fruit from a pirate named Diez Barrels over a decade ago.[6]

Etymology[]

  • Ope is short for operēshon (オペレーション?), the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "operation" (as in, surgical operations).
  • In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, it is called the Op-Op Fruit, "Op" being also short for "Operation".

Appearance[]

Ope Ope no Mi Anime Concept Art

Ope Ope no Mi's concept appearance for the anime.

The Ope Ope no Mi is a red, heart-shaped fruit resembling a strawberry, small enough for a man to hold it in-between his fingers. It has a stem with a swirling end pointing upwards, and, as characteristic of natural Devil Fruits, its surface is swirl-patterned.[3]

Strengths[]

As long as you're within Law's circle, consider yourself a patient on the operating table.
— Smoker's remark on Law's Ope Ope no Mi ability[4]
Law Uses Shambles on Marines

Law manipulating Marines in his ROOM.

The Ope Ope no Mi allows its user to "remodel" the world around them as if by operating on it. By conjuring a transparent-blue, spherical domain of sorts that is centered around the user (dubbed "ROOM" by Law), they gain control over everything inside that territory, from living beings—including themselves—to nonliving objects: as put by Smoker, the Ope Ope no Mi's user becomes the surgeon, their "circle" the operating room, and those caught inside are the patients on the operating table.[4] Examples of the ways wherein the user can "surgically" manipulate things in their ROOM are: swapping the locations of two targets to teleport them, levitating and moving objects of any size around akin to telekinesis, "scanning" targets, slicing people/objects apart without actual injury (akin to dissection) and then reattaching the separate parts to other surfaces, permanently taking out people's organs without harm, transplanting "personalities" (spirits), creating electric shocks or energy constructs to destroy people's bodies from the inside, etc. As long as the user's chosen targets are inside their ROOM, they are within range and the user's techniques instantly reach them regardless of distance.[2][7][4]

Law Cuts Scotch

Law cutting Scotch in half.

More specifically, inside ROOM and with the use of a blade, the user can perform long-ranged spatial slicing to cleanly sever flesh and bone without actually hurting the victim. People separated by this ability are not killed and can still feel their separated parts, regardless of the distance (much like Buggy when he separates himself using the Bara Bara no Mi). Internal organs removed by this ability will become vulnerable and unprotected. The effects of this application of the Ope Ope no Mi persist even after the ROOM is disengaged. Separated parts can be reassembled back to normal or be mixed-up and (re)attached in any manner the user sees fit, such as sticking someone's severed head onto other surfaces, including inanimate objects, or onto someone or something else's body. However, even if a victim gets reassembled back to normal, the possibility of said body parts splitting up once more with the appropriate injury still exists; this happened with Kin'emon during the war against the Beasts Pirates (after Kaidou pierced him with a sword in the spot his legs were first split by Law), a long time after his reassembly back in the Punk Hazard Arc.[8][9][10] Apparently, victims with Devil Fruit powers still retain their abilities after being cut into pieces, but only parts with "conscience" (i.e. the head) seem to be able to access them while in this state. Devil Fruit users who have been split by this power will still feel the effects of seawater if one of their body parts has been submerged.[11] When the cutting power is used on a non-living object, the effect will result as if it were a normal cut.[12]

Straw Hat Body Switch

People swapped into each other's bodies.

Another major ability granted by this fruit is the control over spatial positions, which functions like swap-based teleportation. This technique is especially useful in rain or snowstorms, since there are several droplets of water or snow in the air that can allow the user to place anything almost anywhere, whenever they want to.[13][14] Moreover, it is possible to even swap ("transplant") abstract concepts such as one's "personality" (soul), much like how Bartholomew Kuma is capable of removing one's "pain" with his Nikyu Nikyu no Mi. After switching people's souls, only the user himself can reverse it, but the recipients' bodies must be present in order for him to restore them back to their original bodies. In the case of switched souls, Devil Fruit powers are maintained within the original physical body, while voices and other abilities (such as Haki) go along with the switched souls, due to Haki originating from the individual's spirit, not their body. This was demonstrated when Sanji used his Kenbunshoku Haki in Nami's body.[15]

While the ability to freely manipulate people, objects, and even abstract concepts within a defined space is the fruit's signature power, it is far from being its only one. Just like with ROOM, the user is capable of manifesting other energy-based constructs that work for a variety of purposes and grant massive versatility in combat. From its vast power over space, the user can release spatial energy in the form of high-voltage shocks that act like defibrillators or form electric blades that can bypass physical flesh, directly destroying internal organs. Another similar technique involves the creation of a scanning light encompassing the entire ROOM with the intent of locating specific objects inside it. For defense, the user can manifest transparent veils to protect themselves from incoming enemy attacks.

It is worth noting that the effects caused by this Devil Fruit's operations persist even if the user is rendered unconscious or restrained with Seastone, such as Nami and Sanji's minds remaining swapped or Law, Smoker, and Monet still living with their hearts removed from their bodies when the user found himself in such conditions. Also, it has been shown to be possible to use this ability in conjunction with Busoshoku Haki, as seen when Law was able to bypass Smoker's Logia defenses through his Mes technique.[16]

In addition to its many combat applications, this Devil Fruit's spatial abilities can also be applied for medical purposes. The Ope Ope no Mi has been described as having "miraculous" properties, having the ability to cure any kind of illness, but at the same time still requires some extent of medical knowledge in order to be utilized effectively, as the fruit's influence only bends but not fully defy biological aspects of those recipient to its life-saving applications and its miraculous healing is actually focused on spatially extracting disease-causing impurities such as bacteria and viruses directly out of the patients' bodies. As such, if a doctor of prodigious medical expertise were to obtain this fruit's power, their medical abilities would be second to none.[3] Being an exceptionally skilled and knowledgeable surgeon and doctor, Law can use this ability to its full potential. He has demonstrated the medical prowess of this fruit by curing himself of Amber Lead Syndrome as a child and again when he cured the giant children at Punk Hazard from their drug addiction and poisoning.

If used by someone wise, the Ope Ope no Mi can fulfill a dream humanity has had since ancient times. That's why many call it the ultimate Devil Fruit.
— Donquixote Doflamingo[5]

The greatest power of this fruit, which has earned its reputation of being the "Ultimate Devil Fruit", is the ability to grant another person eternal youth via the "Perennial Youth Operation" (不老手術, Furō Shujutsu?, VIZ: "Immortality Operation"; Funimation: "Perpetual Youth Surgery"), though performing this feat comes at the cost of the current ability user's life. Doflamingo sought out this fruit in order to trick Law into performing it on him so he could conquer the world and possibly rule over it forever.[5] According to Doflamingo, the World Nobles possess a national treasure that, if used in combination with the Ope Ope no Mi, would allow the user to effectively conquer the entire world.[17]

Awakening[]

Once this fruit is "awakened", the user gains the ability to create special ROOMs that adhere directly to foreign objects or living beings instead of surrounding a specific space around the user, not requiring their presence within the operating field for techniques to be performed (unlike normal ROOMs, where the user needs to be inside at all times). This directly addresses one of the fruit's biggest weaknesses, which is the stationary nature of its normal field of range.[18]

Weaknesses[]

The fruit's most obvious drawback is that the user of the Ope Ope no Mi can only use its powers within a specific spherical area that they have to summon themselves, so if the target moves outside the area, they are unaffected by its powers. It should be noted that when a user creates ROOM, it remains stationary until dismissed and another one is created, indicating that the user may not be able to move the ROOM once it is established and that summoning multiple ROOMS at once is impossible. While a big enough ROOM tends to be hard to notice, smaller ones can be easily detected, allowing an enemy to spot it and keep their distance.[19]

Law Setting up Shambles

Law swapping places with a log he had thrown in advance.

While the fruit provides access to a multitude of abilities, most of them have limitations of their own. For example, the user is required to complete hand gestures in order to use certain attacks, with Doflamingo being shown at least once blocking Law's "Mes" technique by restraining his arm.[20] Moreover, for the user to swap something or themselves into a specific position inside his ROOM, they need to somehow set up the positioning of the destination object in case there is nothing already present beforehand.[21][22] In addition, while the user can telekinetically lift anything or anyone else within the ROOM, they apparently cannot lift their own bodies.[23]

A major weakness of this fruit is that usage of the fruit's abilities depletes the user's stamina. This results in situations where the user must rest after or avoid long or multiple enemy confrontations in order to use his powers further down the line.[24] Over-usage and exerting to the range limit can even result in shortening of the lifespan, especially when making use of the fruit's awakened abilities as they likely consume more stamina than usual.[25] The usage of the Perennial Youth Operation, in particular, will cost the user his or her own life.[5]

It was also hinted by Smoker that a Logia's intangibility may offer some level of protection from the fruit's powers.[16] However, if a Logia user has a part of them severed by this power (when used in conjunction with Busoshoku Haki), then that part of them loses the effects of the user's Devil Fruit; this means that such parts can be harmed without the Logia fruit protecting it from damage. In addition, Smoker also strongly insinuated that sufficient proficiency with Haki may offer some level of resistance to the fruit's effects. In support of Smoker's claims, Law was unable to cut through Doflamingo's usage of Busoshoku Haki, with the latter catching the former's sword and stopping Law's attack despite being inside of Law's ROOM.[26] Haki being used as a deterrent to this fruit's effects was further proven in the Wano Country Arc, where Law confirmed he was unable to displace either Big Mom or Kaidou around due to their far superior Haki.[27]

In regards to the fruit's medical applications, a good deal of medical knowledge is required to use the Ope Ope no Mi to its fullest extent.[3] Also, as Donquixote Rosinante pointed out, the fruit's miraculous applications and premises are not divine or in any way omnipotent by nature, and still follows the core rules of science and medical logic, albeit somewhat conditionally. As such, the user must be intellectual enough on how to utilize its powers when circumventing, however slightly, those rules for the advantage (or at least preservation) of recipients to be modified by the fruit's power, in order for him or her to employ the Ope Ope to its utmost medical potential.

Other than that, the user is affected by the standard Devil Fruit weaknesses.

Usage[]

Previous User[]

In the past, when a certain doctor ate the fruit, the doctor was able to perform miraculous operations that saved many lives and cured all sorts of diseases in ways that no ordinary surgeon was capable of.[3]

Trafalgar D. Water Law[]

Law is overall a tricky and smart fighter, using his various abilities to redirect attacks coming at him,[28] disarm opponents[29] or escape perilous situations,[30] among a diversity of other tactics. From its first appearance, Law developed this ability to a great extent over the timeskip as his ROOM now covers a much larger area than it did before.[31]

Third Research Institute Cut by Amputate

Law demonstrates his range to be enough to slice through an entire mountain.

It was stated by Smoker that the spherical territory generated by Law marks the range of how long Law can affect targets from afar. He generally uses the warping aspect of this power to his advantage. Both in and out of battle, he uses this ability to help him obtain things that are otherwise beyond his physical reach or to confuse an opponent.[4] The Ope Ope no Mi makes Law well-suited at fighting long-range battles, since he practically wields full control of an area where anything can happen for as long as his powers are active. However, he is just as formidable in close-range combat, having defeated Vice Admiral Smoker in this manner and later one of the Yeti Cool Brothers using an offensive contact technique.[32]

Law typically uses his Devil Fruit powers in tandem with his swordsmanship, making his sword a "scalpel" of sorts while his powers are active. A swing from Law's sword is usually enough to bisect a whole squadron of enemies from afar. Another common form of attacking includes Law telekinetically launching debris at his foes, slashing the surrounding environment into pieces in case he needs more "ammo".[33]

He can also use the fruit's powers to aid him in his medical operations, such as by cutting his patients into pieces so as to methodically remove hazardous objects or substances from their bodies, and rejoining them together.[34] It was by using this ability that he managed to remove the Amber Lead that accumulated within his own body, thus saving himself from the otherwise incurable lead poisoning, and is the primary reason why he was force fed the fruit in the first place.[3] Law used this power to turn the people on Punk Hazard, who lost the use of their legs due to a chemical-weapon explosion on the island, into centaurs and satyrs by attaching their upper bodies to the lower bodies of their respective animals.[35]

The fruit can be used to grant another person eternal youth in exchange for the current user's life, something Doflamingo originally tried to brainwash Law into doing upon discovering that the child ate the fruit.[36] However, Law states that he has no interest in this particular ability, least of all for his enemy.[5]

Shock Wille

Law using his awakening to modify his sword and operate on Big Mom's insides.

Having achieved awakening of his ability, Law is capable of creating "remote" ROOMs that function differently from normal ones. Those awakened ROOMs can be tossed at or coated on objects to spatially distort them in a variety of ways, with Law not needing to be inside their range in order to do so. Law primarily utilizes his awakening in conjunction with his sword, allowing him to increase its size and/or make it phase through targets, similar to how regular, spherical ROOMs work. When his awakening is applied on enemy targets, Law becomes able to operate on them from afar, be it through his usual moves or more abstract effects like noise cancelling. Through this application, Law has developed at least one technique in homage to Donquixote Rosinante, his childhood savior. That said, Law claims that he is not yet used to this ability and its huge consumption of stamina, hence him relegating it to a last resort move should his regular techniques fail him.[37]

Techniques[]

ROOM

Law creates a ROOM.

  • ROOM (ROOMルーム, Rūmu?): The precursor to all of Law's techniques, Law creates a spherical space around himself and his targets, in which he can manipulate anything he wants in a variety of ways; he cannot perform any of his other techniques outside of this spherical area. Law can hold off on the activation of his ROOM by creating a small circle around his hand,[2] which later will expand to form the ROOM itself.[38] The size of the ROOM can vary from a few meters wide to surrounding entire buildings and mountains, although larger ROOMs require more effort to maintain. The color of the ROOM is transparent, with only the boundaries visible in a light blue aura, so Law can keep his ROOM unnoticed by enemies if he expands it to a size beyond their line of sight.[25] This was first seen used against a Marine soldier during the escape from the Human Auctioning House. Depending on the source of media, ROOM is either written in all capitals in English text (ROOM), or in katakana.
Amputate

Law uses "Amputate" on Vergo.

  • Amputate (切断アンピュテート, Anpyutēto?, literally meaning "Amputate/Severance"): Law's basic offensive technique. Law cleanly cuts his target with Kikoku without actually harming them. Law's sword does not actually have to make contact with the enemy to cut the target apart. The separated body parts seem to maintain a connection similar to Buggy when using his Bara Bara no Mi powers. Law first demonstrated this move against a Marine soldier outside the Human Auctioning House in the Sabaody Archipelago, using it in combination with "Shambles".[2] However, he did not mention its name until he was explaining Radio Knife.[39] Amputate also seems to be necessary when performing operations, in order to extract narcotics from patients, as he did so on the drug-addicted children on Punk Hazard.[40] This technique can also be utilized in conjunction with R-ROOM, allowing Law to cut targets without needing to be in the same space as them.[41] In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, it is called Amputation. An "amputation" is the removal of a body extremity by trauma, prolonged constriction, or surgery.
Radio Knife

Law uses "Radio Knife" on Trebol.

  • Radio Knife (ラジオナイフ, Rajio Naifu?): An advanced version of Amputate. Law charges his sword with electricity in a similar manner to his Counter Shock move and then quickly slashes his enemy, which results in the target being separated into several segments while also suffering an electric shock. The cutting itself, like Law's regular slash attacks, is not harmful; however, it differs from them as it prevents the target from briefly being able to reattach their own body, and is meant to be a counter to any abilities where one can re-assemble themselves from Law's original amputation abilities.[42] It was used for the first time against Trebol inside his ROOM after using Shambles to swap his position with Doflamingo.[43] A radio knife is a surgical instrument that uses a high-frequency electric arc to cut away through tissue.
  • Shambles (シャンブルズ, Shanburuzu?): Within the space created with ROOM, Law can swap the positions of any object inside. Law primarily uses this move to switch places with other objects in order to dodge attacks or for transportation purposes, but it also has offensive applications; an example is when he switched a decapitated Marine's head for a cannonball coming towards him, attaching the ball of iron back to where the Marine's head used to be. When performing it, Law often gestures with his outstretched index, middle and thumb fingers, while holding his palm inwards. Interestingly, it is shown that he can bring objects to his person without the need for switching them with another object. This was first seen being used against a Marine soldier during the escape from the Human Auctioning House.[44] In the VIZ manga, it is called Chambres, which is French for "rooms," while in the Funimation adaptations, it retains its original name.
Shambles Jinkaku Ishoku Shujutsu

Law switches the minds of the Straw Hats with "Shambles".

  • Jinkaku Ishoku Shujutsu (人格移植手術, Jinkaku Ishoku Shujutsu?, literally meaning "Personality Transplant Surgery"): During his confrontation against the Straw Hat Pirates, Law showed that he can use Shambles to swap non-physical items such as souls, effectively putting one person in another one's body, though before he can do this, he needs to do a thrusting motion at each person, to bring their "heart" out,[4] although if the 'hearts' are already not in the original body he simply needs to make a gesture without the thrusting motion. In the case of Tashigi, switching hearts made her lose consciousness. He later used this attack to bring Franky and Tony Tony Chopper back to their original bodies. This technique was named by Doflamingo.[45] In the VIZ manga, this is called the Personality-Switching Surgery. In the Funimation adaptations it is called Personality-Transplant Surgery.
Takt

Law uses "Takt".

  • Takt (タクト, Takuto?): Law uses his ability to levitate an object within his ROOM in a telekinetic manner. To use this technique, Law first performs a lifting motion with his index finger to get the object off the ground (if it is an airborne object, like a meteor, he does not need to do this), then redirects its position by pointing to the desired direction. Law has shown the ability to move multiple objects at once as well, using all of his hand's fingers to do so.[33] He can also use Takt to raise stone thorns from the ground to impale his enemies. This technique is first seen being used against the G-5 Marines, and is powerful enough to lift a Marine battleship and some of the surrounding water into the air.[31] Takt is German for "cadence" or "tact", in some forms of One Piece media, it is even written with a c.
  • Sterben (死の刀ステルベン, Suteruben?, literally meaning "Blade of Death"): A technique used when Law had his right arm severed by Doflamingo. After using Takt on his severed arm, Law makes it spin. Because the arm is still holding Law's sword, it effectively ends up acting like a buzzsaw that cuts the opponent in a vertical motion. It was first used to defeat Trebol.[46] Sterben means "to die" or "dying" in German, often used as a term for hospital deaths. It could also refer to the sternum, the frontal part of the ribcage which the attack focuses on. In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, it's called Sterben Blade.
  • Scan (スキャン, Sukyan?): Law scans people inside his ROOM by imbuing his sword with the fruit's energy and beaming it through the crowd, using it much like an x-ray machine. This allows him to see the location of any items on the scanned people, selectively swapping away any items they may have on their person. It was first used to steal all the Den Den Mushis from a group of G-5 Marines.[4]
Law Defeats Smoker

Law uses "Mes" against Smoker.

  • Mes (メス, Mesu?): Law strikes his opponent in the chest with his bare hand in a grasping motion, causing their heart to expel out of their body, encased in a glass-like cube. This attack leaves a cube-shaped hole on the opponent's body where the heart was. It presumably tires the victim in some way, since Smoker panted heavily after Law succeeded at depriving him of his heart, although it does not kill the victim. It was first seen being used on Smoker.[16] Since all body parts severed with Law's abilities still act as if they were still intact, squeezing or beating the heart-cube inflicts great pain and internal damage to the victim, making this technique suitable for subduing and controlling people.[47] Puncturing the heart will cause instant death.[48] Mes means "Scalpel" or "Knife" in Dutch, from which the Japanese term for scalpel, Mesu, is derived. In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, it is called Scalpel.
Counter Shock

Law uses "Counter Shock" against Doflamingo.

  • Counter Shock (カウンターショック, Kauntā Shokku?): Law places both of his hands forward onto whatever he is targeting (normally in close quarters amidst a foe) and releases a strong electrical surge like a defibrillator. He can also use just his thumbs or one of his hands for this move.[38][25] A countershock is an electric shock that is applied to the chest to restore the normal rhythm of the heart.
Law Attacks Kaidou

Law performs "Injection Shot" against Kaidou.

  • Injection Shot (注射インジェクションショット, Injekushon Shotto?): While aiming at his target, Law rushes towards them with his sword stretched out in order to stab them. Once the sword connects, Law makes it "fire" like a gun, making the target bleed in the aimed spot while pushing them back a fair distance.[49] Law's signature ability of being able to cut objects from afar can still be used while performing this move, as seen when he cut through Trebol's Hanamizu Shinken Shirahadori without having to touch it with his sword, but the move can still be blocked by hitting the blade from the side.[42] This technique is among one of Law's most powerful, as he was able to injure Kaidou in his Human-Beast Form with this attack despite the latter's massive toughness.[50] It was first used against Trebol, but was interrupted by Doflamingo before it made contact.[42] Its first successful use was against Doflamingo himself.[49]
Gamma Knife

Law uses "Gamma Knife" against Doflamingo.

  • Gamma Knife (ガンマナイフ, Ganma Naifu?): This is Law's strongest non-Awakened technique. Law creates a short blade of energy before stabbing his opponent with it. This technique destroys his victim's internal organs without leaving any external wounds. According to Law, not even someone of Doflamingo's caliber could survive this. This was first used to fatally wound Doflamingo, though he managed to mitigate the worst of the effects by stitching his damaged organs back together with his string ability.[25] Later on, Law was able to injure Kaidou in his Full Beast Form with this technique.[51] A gamma knife is a method of radiosurgery which is used to treat brain tumors. In the anime and other recent media, the color of the energy is shown as pale-green and later yellow.
Curtain

Law uses "Curtain".

  • Curtain (抗菌武装カーテン, Kāten?, literally meaning "Antibiotic Armament"): A defensive technique. Law makes a pulling motion with his arm stretched horizontally in front of him, which generates what appears to be a protective, transparent veil between himself and his opponent, akin to surgical draping. It was first used to defend against Kaidou, but Law was still sent flying by his attack, so it is unknown if the move was any effective in reducing damage in some way.[50] The kanji for this technique may indicate Law's possible employment of Busoshoku Haki to perform it. In the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations, the technique is called Antibacterial Curtain.
Awakened Techniques[]
K-ROOM

Law using K-ROOM.

  • K-ROOM (K・ROOMクローム, Kurōmu?): Law creates a spherical space above his hand that is very similar to ROOM, but unlike it, this piece of space seemingly never expands by itself. Instead, Law is capable of coating objects with this spatial bubble, granting them similar properties to that of a regular ROOM and letting Law perform operations through said objects alone. Law first used this move in his confrontation with Big Mom, considering it a last resort due to the high amount of energy this technique consumes to perform.[37] Though the English spelling of technique name is reflective of "ROOM", the pronunciation is akin to that of "chrome", with the katakana ル (ru) swapped for ロ (ro). The "K" stands for "Knife", as a reference to Kikoku's role as Law's surgical knife in combat.[52]
Anesthesia

Law performing Anesthesia.

  • Anesthesia (麻酔アナススィージャ, Anasusīja?): Law coats his Kikoku with the essence of K-ROOM, allowing it to pierce through anything without harming the target, akin to spatial phasing. In addition, Law can enlarge his K-ROOM-coated blade for an increase of range, much like he does with a regular ROOM. This move was first used against Big Mom.[37]
  • Shock Wille (衝撃波動ショックヴィレ, Shokku Vire?, literally meaning "Impact/Shock Surge"): After piercing through a target with Kikoku, Law releases an electrical shock wave through it that fries the target from the inside. Its effects are very similar to Gamma Knife's, but because the electric shock directly occurs from inside the pierced target instead of coming from the outside, it ignores whatever external defenses they may have. It was first used against Big Mom, bypassing her normally monstrous external body defenses and making her bleed from the mouth.[37] The word Wille is German for "will", with the W sounds read as a V (making the technique literally mean "Shock Will"). The technique's name is likely a pun on the German word Schockwelle, meaning "shockwave".
Puncture Wille

Puncture Wille.

  • Puncture Wille (穿刺波動パンクチャーヴィレ, Pankuchā Vire?, literally meaning "Puncture Surge"): One of Law's most destructive techniques. Law positions himself on top of a downed target and pierces them with Kikoku, pining their bodies down to the floor as his sword continuously extends downward and phases through the ground or whatever is in its way. Once Kikoku reaches a certain depth, Law releases a powerful shockwave that implodes everything solid pierced by the blade, causing massive damage to living beings and creating huge holes on rocky surfaces. This move was strong enough to cause a massive crater near the Flower Capital, having been first used against Big Mom and visibly injuring her to an extreme degree.[53] The move's name follows the same scheming as Shock Wille, with Puncture Wille literally meaning "Puncture Will". A puncture is another word for a centesis, the procedure of removing fluid from a body through an injection needle.
R-ROOM

Law using R-ROOM.

  • R-ROOM (RROOMルーム, Ri-Rūmu?): Another variation of ROOM. Law creates a spherical space above his hand and then tosses it on a target. Once R-ROOM is set, Law applies a specific effect to it that affects the target inside. Unlike a normal ROOM, R-ROOM will remain attached to its target and may expand in size in order to keep its applied effect in place. R-ROOM also works with Law's regular techniques, allowing him to operate on targets while being outside R-ROOM's range himself.[41] This was first used against Big Mom.[54] The "R" stands for and is pronounced ri (?) meaning "separate" or "distant", likely as a reference to remote surgeries.[52] In the VIZ manga and Funimation subs, this is called RE-ROOM.
Law Silences Big Mom

R-Room: Silent.

  • Silent (サイレント, Sairento?, literally meaning "Calm"): Law makes his R-ROOM soundproof, preventing any direct or indirect sound produced by the target from leaving its designated space. This technique is an homage to Rosinante, Law's mentor who was the former user of the Nagi Nagi no Mi and could use a similarly named move. Law first used this against Big Mom, with the intent of silencing her during Soul Pocus, rendering it ineffective against Law and Kid's crewmates; [54] and made it impossible to command her Homies, like Misery. This technique refers to a space used in mental hospitals called a "Quiet Room", a place with quieter interaction and less stimulation used in treating disruptive patients. In the VIZ manga and Funimation subs, this is called Silence.

Video Game Only Techniques[]

  • Resection (切除リセクション, Risekushon?, literally meaning "Cut Off/Ablation"): A technique only used in the video game One Piece: Gigant Battle! 2 New World. Standing in one side of ROOM, Law slashes from top to bottom. In surgery, a resection is the act of removing part or all of a body part, such as an internal organ; while an ablation is removal of material form surfaces of an object through erosive processes (such as vaporization and/or chipping). Used as one of his basic attacks, where it must be done via charging up his neutral basic attack input for around a second.
  • Emergency (救急エマージェンシー, Emājenshī?, literally meaning "First Aid"): A technique only used in the video game One Piece: Gigant Battle! 2 New World as his downward attack. While down on one knee, Law teleports himself from one side of the ROOM to the other via his Shambles.
  • Accident (不慮の事故アクシデント, Akushidento?, literally meaning "Unforeseen Accident"): A technique only used in the video game One Piece: Gigant Battle! 2 New World. After getting into a crouching position on his knees upon landing from the air, Law creates ROOM with him in its center and slashes horizontally outward via a sweeping slash, used as his downward midair attack via teleporting to the ground before slashing.
  • Transection (切断トランセクション, Toransekushon?, literally meaning "Severance/Amputate"): A technique only used in the video game One Piece: Gigant Battle! 2 New World. Standing in one side of ROOM, Law slashes from bottom to top. A transection is a division by cutting across or a cross-section along a long axis. Like his Amputate, it oddly enough has the same kanji and literal reading as the said technique (setsudan). This was due to the attack being named before Law named his basic Amputation ability in the manga/anime.
  • Catastrophe (カタストロフィ, Katasutorofi?): A technique that appears in the video game One Piece: Gigant Battle! 2 New World, where it is used as his strongest special attack. In the space created from ROOM centered around himself, Law cuts those within many times with rapid slashes as he slowly moves forward, then finalizes it by replacing the victim's head with a cannonball via Shambles.
    • A similar technique is also used as his inverted S3 (Triangle x2, Square) in the One Piece: Pirate Warriors games, where he simply cuts with his sword rapidly (flailing it around with a single hand) while standing stationary, and instead ends it with a Takt. The original version of the move can be somewhat replicated if Law uses his R1 ability to lay down another ROOM during the inverted S3 to instantly transition into the C5 (Square X4, Triangle) version of his Shambles. However, in Pirate Warriors 4, it becomes his airborne C5 (Square x4, Triangle) instead.
    • In One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X however, this acts as Law's Secret Attack, and is a variation on his wide-scale slash used to defeat Vergo. First for the intro scene, Law forms a large ROOM to lift up a marine ship (via Takt) much like at Punk Hazard, then cuts it in half. A large ROOM on the arena forms as Law stands from the foreground, slashing away at the space to cut up all targets within it 16 times; then just like in Gigant Battle! 2 New World, he ends it with a Shambles via snapping his fingers to replace his target(s)' head(s) with an incendiary object, only he instead uses a blue bomb with a fuse (also used by the midair strong attack version of his Shambles in the same game).
  • Kaitengiri (回転斬り, Kaitengiri?, literally meaning "Rotating Cutter"): Law draws Kikoku for a spinning slash attack forward. Used as his side weak attack in One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X, where it can be tapped for more spins/hits while also having enhanced range via ROOM. Can also be used in midair akin to Senkaigiri, only at a forward angle slanted-upward (though he first delays himself in a small drop then rises upward-forward after the first two spins).
  • Kiriage (斬り上げ, Kiriage?, literally meaning "Slashing Lift"): Law slashes upward in an outward slash to launch his target. Used as his upward weak attack in One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X, where it can have enhanced range via ROOM.
  • Nagiharai (なぎ払い, Nagiharai?, literally meaning "Mow Down"): Law's neutral strong attack in One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X, where he slashes outward across in front of himself. Can have its range enhanced by ROOM. It should be noted that the term "nagiharai" (lit. mow sweep) is a term for "mowing down", with the "nagi" part being written in hiragana instead of kanji (薙ぎ).
  • Kiri Oroshi (斬り下ろし, Kiri Oroshi?, literally meaning "Slash Dropping"): The follow-up to Nagiharai via second input, where Law reaps downward with Kikoku. Used in One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X and can have its range enhanced by ROOM.
  • Senkaigiri (旋回斬り, Senkaigiri?, literally meaning "Swiveling Cutter"): Akin to the aforementioned Kaitengiri, only Law rises upward at a slight forward angle; can also tap the button for more spins/hits like the said Kaitengiri as well. Used as his upward strong attack in One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X, and can have its range enhanced by ROOM.
  • "Mou dare mo hikikaesene-!" ("もう誰も引き返せねェ!", "Mō dare mo hikikaesene-!"?, literally meaning "No one is ever going back!"): Used in Pirate Warriors 2 and 3 as his Level 2 Special Attack, and can be equipped as one of his many others in Pirate Warriors 4. Law creates a large ROOM, then tosses his up his sheath into the air and pulls Kikoku back with both hands gripping it over his shoulder. He then does an extremely wide slash that affects the entirety of the said ROOM, then afterwards catches his sheath to re-holster Kikoku. This is most likely a nod to his finishing slash against Vergo which split the majority of Punk Hazard in half; the quote for the name of this attack is also the same one Law speaks word-for-word, only he does not speak out its name in-game until Pirate Warriors 3. In the game's English release, the technique is called "No one will go back!".

History[]

Past[]

According to Diez Barrels, this fruit was once eaten by a doctor in the past. This doctor became a legend, as the Ope Ope no Mi allowed him to perform miraculous operations that cured all kinds of diseases.[3]

Emporio Ivankov speculated that a past user of this fruit had performed the "Perennial Youth Operation" on someone, explaining how this ability was known in the present.[55]

When Donquixote Doflamingo escaped Mary Geoise, he took with him the knowledge of the Holy Land's national treasure, which would allow him to conquer the entire world if he were to combine it with the Ope Ope no Mi's ability to grant him eternal life.[5] For this reason, he sought out this Devil Fruit.[3]

About six months after his brother, Donquixote Rosinante, left the crew with Law to search for a cure for Amber Lead Syndrome, Doflamingo got news of the Ope Ope no Mi being sold to the Marines by a pirate who did not know of the fruit's true potential, and contacted Rosinante to inform him of this. Doflamingo ordered the two runaways to return to the crew, and once the crew stole this fruit from the transaction, Rosinante was to eat the fruit and use its powers to heal Law. What Doflamingo did not inform his younger brother, however, was that he intended to order Rosinante to use the Perennial Youth Operation on him, granting Doflamingo eternal life. Rosinante had already figured out Doflamingo's unspoken intention, and being a spy for the Marines who already possessed a Devil Fruit power, decided to circumvent this transaction himself, so he could feed the fruit to Law and save him from the Amber Lead Syndrome. Eventually, Rosinante succeeded in stealing the Ope Ope no Mi and was en route to Law when his clumsiness caused him to tumble off a cliff. He was then subsequently ambushed by the pirates from whom he stole the fruit.[3]

Despite being shot all over, Rosinante successfully returned to Law with the fruit and force-fed it to him, giving him the power to save himself from the Amber Lead Syndrome.[56] When Doflamingo was notified about this by Rosinante himself, he grew infuriated by this setback as he never wanted Law to eat the fruit in the first place. Regardless, Doflamingo recomposed himself and decided to shift his plan, planning to "educate" Law into seeing the importance of dying for him, unaware that Law heard this heartless comment while hidden.[36] Law, on the other hand, plotted to use this power, amongst everything else he has, to defeat Doflamingo and avenge Rosinante.[5]

Ever since Law betrayed the crew, the Donquixote Pirates have been desperate to retrieve the power in order to grant Doflamingo eternal youth while acknowledging that Law would not perform the operation onto Doflamingo.[42]

Dressrosa Saga[]

Dressrosa Arc[]

When Law arrived with the Straw Hat Pirates at Dressrosa, the Donquixote Pirates attempted to get his devil fruit once more. They ultimately failed when Monkey D. Luffy defeated Doflamingo and the entire crew was arrested.[57]

Wano Country Saga[]

Wano Country Arc[]

At some point prior to the Raid on Onigashima, Law awakened the fruit's powers.[37]

Final Saga[]

Egghead Arc[]

After defeating Law at Winner Island, Blackbeard became very interested in the Ope Ope no Mi and contemplated either killing Law and stealing the fruit, or having Law make him immortal. However, Bepo saved Law and they escaped from Blackbeard and his crew.[58]

Translation and Dub Issues[]

The technique "Shambles" has been translated by VIZ as "Chambres", the French word for rooms. In addition, this translation has also been seen romanized on the cover of Chapter 1 of One Piece Party.

Trivia[]

  • Most of Law's techniques reference real medical terms or surgical tools. The only exception to this is "Shambles", which is another word for "disorder".
  • The Ope Ope no Mi can utilize the abilities of other Devil Fruits, but with some differences:
    • The Bara Bara no Mi, with the user being able to split up their own body apart without any harm. The differences are that the Ope Ope user can split other people and objects the same way while the Bara Bara user can only split themselves up. Also, the user of the Ope Ope no Mi must manually perform some action to modify themselves, whereas one with the Bara Bara no Mi will reflexively separate if need be.
    • The Choki Choki no Mi, with the user being able to cleanly cut almost any solid matter with a sharp tool. However, the Choki Choki user can transform their own hands into scissors while the Ope Ope user must need a pre-existing tool. Also, the matter cut by the Choki Choki will become flexible like paper whereas matter cut by the Ope Ope will not, and it's unknown if the Choki Choki can cut organic matter like the Ope Ope can.
    • The Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, as it can allow the user to move themselves or others quickly like teleportation. However, while the Nikyu Nikyu user simply "pushes" things around and can move them through vast distances, the Ope Ope user can only move things as long as they are within their field and must switch them with another object or person.
      • The Wapu Wapu no Mi can actually teleport things seemingly without the need for a room or switching, but its currently unknown if it has any weaknesses or range limit.
    • The Fuwa Fuwa no Mi, with the user being able to levitate other objects. However, the Ope Ope user can lift anything or anyone other than themselves as long as they are within the ROOM, and must do so manually, whereas the Fuwa Fuwa user can lift themselves and other inanimate objects simply by touching them, but cannot lift other living things, and the items can continue to levitate until the user is knocked out or killed.
      • The Zushi Zushi no Mi can also levitate objects, but its powers are based on gravity rather than actual telekinesis.
    • The Giro Giro no Mi, as the user can locate things that are out of sight. However, the Ope Ope user must make a "scanning" motion with their hands while the Giro Giro user must encircle their eyes with their fingers.
    • The Goro Goro no Mi, as the user can induce electrical shocks to their opponents. However, the Goro Goro is a Logia that can transform the user into electricity, whereas the Paramecia-type Ope Ope cannot.
      • Law's Counter Shock technique is also similar to Enel's technique Vari, albeit without specifying the voltage.
    • The Bari Bari no Mi, as the user can project a force-field if need be, though it is not as big or durable as the barriers the Bari Bari user can make.
    • The Nagi Nagi no Mi, as the user can project a field to silence out anything inside. However, the Nagi Nagi user can also simply touch objects or people to make them silent while the Ope Ope user cannot.
  • This is the first Devil Fruit used by a Supernova to be named (other than Luffy's), 158 chapters after its initial appearance.[4]
  • This is one of the two Devil Fruits confirmed to shorten the user's lifespan if used in a particular way, with the other one being the Chiyu Chiyu no Mi. While overuse of the Ope Ope no Mi powers does shorten the user's life, the use of the Perennial Youth Operation also forfeits the user's life. Both fruits' namesakes are associated with the field of medicine.
  • This fruit's appearance of a peach, along with its ability to give eternal youth, may be a reference to the mythological Peaches of Immortality. In Chinese mythology, peaches symbolize immortality, or the wishes of a long and healthy life.
  • The Ope Ope no Mi is not the only Devil Fruit with the ability to provide eternal youth as the Hobi Hobi no Mi grants the same effect to the user upon consumption. Incidentally, the Hobi Hobi no Mi is also able to halt the aging process on targets once they transform, as proven by Kyros, who remained biologically 34 while in toy form.
  • For gameplay balance purposes, the Ope Ope no Mi tends to have its effects and mechanics heavily altered in certain video games. Some examples of this include:
    • Having Law be able to carry his ROOM around or perform some techniques without it (Gigant Battle and Super Grand Battle! X).
    • Amputate often does not cause splitting, and instead merely increases his attack range within a ROOM. The same applies to Radio Knife which may be backed by electrical energies to enhance its cutting power.
    • Using ROOM or other surfaces as a conductor for Counter Shock, which is otherwise a close-ranged move (Pirate Warriors series).
    • Scan often functions similarly to Chopper's Scope technique, allowing Law to detect weak points on his foes.
    • Radio Knife is often relegated to an acrobatic slash of sorts that has Law sheath his blade while upside-down and airborne mid-recovery (Pirate Warriors series, Burning Blood and Jump Force). Radio Knife is also portrayed as a single slash in the manga while game instances have it become multi-slashes in one move.
    • Sterben, otherwise a situational technique born from Law having one of his arms sliced off, may be depicted as a normal part of Law's moveset (Pirate Warriors series, Burning Blood and Great Pirate Colosseum), where he manipulates Kikoku as a flying saw-like projectile. However, in Pirate Warriors 4, a different version of Sterben as one of his select-able R1 special attacks can be performed where he gathers an array of swords in front of him with Shambles and fires them off in a fanning spread with Takt (even though Law also has access to the buzzsaw-styled version which can be done with a horizontal flight pattern as well).
      • Sterben likewise, ends up only in Pirate Warriors and Burning Blood as having Kikoku being laced with the same energy used to empower Radio Knife.
  • In Great Fun Project! "Surgeon of Death" Trafalgar Law, Tony Tony Chopper views the power of the fruit as handy for medical care, and as such wishes he could have that power too.
