[edit] Once Upon a Time
Almost each wikias has a main reason to exist, there is always someone whom inspires a fan to create a wiki basing on his/her work. For example, if George Lucas is not born, they'll be no Star War Wikia, if Jim Hanson is not born, they'll be no Muppet Wikia, if Gene Roddensberry is not born, they'll be no Star Trek Wikia. Yet if Eiichiro Oda is never born, this Wikia will not be made. Eiichiro Oda is the source of this Wikia extinction.

The story begins when Eiichiro Oda begun his career at age 17 as an manga assessment to 3 different manga artist, he decided to create a pirate-based manga. He created other works such as Wanted!, God's Gift for the Future, Monsters and Itsuki Yakou but it was One Piece that was the reason why this site was created. At age 22, in Aug 1997, he picks up his pen and begun drawing the first chapter of One Piece. One Piece was released by Shuiesha's Shonen Jump.
In 2002, One Piece became international and Viz started to translate the volume but they would released it one in each 3 months of a year. By 2004, after 4kids announced to dub the series, the One Piece article was being created on Wikipedia which would soon become the very reason why One Piece Wikia is the way it is now.

[edit] Birth of this Wikia: 2006
Years after One Piece started the original basic for a OP wikia has existed long before the present editors. In Feb 2006, a user named Kuyaza created the Wikia but only made one edit before disappearing. However he showed no inspiration of why he created this site, it was never known if Wikipedia was what started him off to found this site but his rude return strongly suggest that he just created the site for a different reason.
In April 7th 2006, STAREYe made one edit on the main page before disappearing until March 24 2007. In April 11th 2006, an user name Coopaii created the Straw Hat Pirate page which is the oldest page in the One Piece Wikia, created the spoiler template, setting up the first picture in the main page, he set up few info box templates, and created the Luffy D. Monkey page. In August 6 2006, a user named Aquarius505 worked mainly on the main page, did edits in the Luffy page, set up the Straw Hat Project page which was eventually deleted since it was never worked on, sets up the One Piece and Anime page before disappearing on the same day. They're also has been a few IP address users before Oct 8th. The period between February 2006 to Oct 8th 2006 was known as the lonely period, due to One Piece suffering a a bad mark thanks to the 4kids dub, One Piece was largely ignored because of that. Any editors; including IP address users who had edit here before October 8th were known as the sooners, only 2 users never came back, the other 2 came back for a short while and then disappeared again.
After August 6th, there was no more editors, thus the site was left to decay for 2 months and 66 days.
This site changed forever in October 8th 2006 when a few frustrated Wikipedia editors came here, first it was Mugiwara Franky and Justyn. In October 10th, SigmasonicX arrived. By October 15th, Murasaki and Angel arrived. By October 18th, Joekido (Note: Joekido already browse this site long before Oct. 8 but ever edit anything as he was upset that the site was already made) and Cody arrived. Later in November 5th 2006, Battle Franky arrived. These people are the major editors of this Wikia
They came here after conflicts of interests on Wikipedia broke down during Sept because of a bland rules and idiot users who wanted to delete many articles. The users never had the creative freedom they will have here, any discussion would result a ban. Many pictures doomed to be deleted was moved here, many early pages were ripped from Wikipedia but was later One Pieceficated.
October and the months afterwards marked a harsh time, as this site suffered from major editing wars and conflict of interests. The Wikia had no rules and set-ups and arguments caused a few editors to leave. Many articles were being added and it became difficult to catch up. In order to maintain a "universal" recognized naming system, the site had to reject 4Kids dub names and keep the original Japanese names such as "Roronoa Zoro" instead of "Roronoa Zolo".
In early October, a user name Joekido, who already browse the site before, was stressed out because he recently had his rank on the AP.net stripped and had his love to ed came here and sought "revenge" by turning this site into an AP.net clone only to be repealed by other editors. However the site was nearly damaged but Joekido had practically made a current minor impact on the site. The site became "aware" of its status compared to other sites and took steps to ensure it did not just copy other sites. However, there was still one more site that it had deep links directly to the wikia, that had yet to be broken.
Due to Kuyaza not being around, talks for an administrator to maintain the site, one user went to the Wikia staffer to appoint a new administrator so the staffer, Sparka, now inactive set up an vote. Only one person may be a bauracat. Justyn became the most voted person. In late Oct/ early Nov. As many pages were created, some users wanted to Marge page. Joekido wanted to de-marge pages to give this site over thousands of pages like other wikias. He and Cody got in an edit war, forcing Joekido to bag Sparka for an administrator, Sparka appointed Justyn to become a bauracat. Finally as things calmed down, Joekido begun shaping the main page, giving it a common templates that was found in many wikia main page but he need help from Angel as he does not know the codes very well. Joekido was responsible for setting up rules.
By Dec, Kuyaza, who was missing for 9 monthes returned and banned some members unfairly. This cause an uproar and Joekido has to once again tag for Sparka for help once more. After the order was restored, Kuyaza disappeared once again after apologizing and was given a one month ban by Justyn. The members then resume giving the site more pages, avoiding anymore edit wars. The main page begin to have a "do you know" box, "One Piece world" box and a "feature" box. Meanwhile, MF was a template master, BF did many redirects, Masukai handled subs, Joekido, Angel and Cody cleaned up articles. SigmasonicX had stopped editing here in Dec, becoming the first of the original editors to leave due to an disagreements over the rules. Soon Angel began to prepare the site for a new year where the wikia will take a different path
During 2006, One Piece was going through half of Enies Lobby arc and Post-Enies Lobby arcs. Meanwhile the One Piece anime was still in 4Kids' hands and Viz is still slowly releasing manga volumes

The site was still nearly a Wikipedia clone from the October era when several major editors made a migration here and still referred to the One Piece pages there as its "sister site". Most information had not changed from being copied over onto the wikia and due to the lack of number of editors, was fast becoming just an out of date alternative to its "sister site".
On Jan 1, the site declared independence from Wikipedia. At first little seem to change, however until spring of 2007 when the effects of its independence from wikipedia began to become noticeable. Finally it has made a long rebound from being a Wikipedia clone and begun to be original. Many pages were given a overhaul and reorganized. Finally after months of work getting away from wikipedia, the site has now succeeded in becoming much more different to what it started as.
But during 2007, One Piece Wikia was very slow, only a handful of editors came here and rarly does the site update in every minute and once in a while does a new editor comes in. Joekido still wants to push the site to the mature stage quickly, the site also lacks a logo. In March 2007, 4Kids quitted dubbing One Piece, a month later an Texas-based company, Funimation, adopted the series. This brings good news to One Piece community. Because the Funimation dub was set to air on September 2007, this site had started to go through an major changes to prepare for the upcoming dub. But despited the success, Cartoon Network only aired a few episode before it went on hold but was cancelled the next year.

One Piece Wikia has reached it's puberty stage. On the main page, an announcement template and current event templates was created, the site has reached to 3000 articles and the site has many foreign afflictions linked to it. By May 30th, Funimation was to simulcast the subbed series just after it's original broadcast but by May 29th, someone uploaded the episode already and Funimation shut down the site until they investigate the situation. Finally at Augest 15th the simulcast was resumed. Even better, Viz has decided to release 5 volumes a month starting in Jan 2010 to June 2010 where fans would be able to collect 30 volumes. However as One Piece became popular, it is unknown if One Piece will ever get highly popular like the Muppets or Star Wars or others in America, as the wounds cause by 4Kids is still healing.
By this time, One Piece Wikia has been wildly edited and has many solid pages but as Angel suggested, there are still many weaker issues. One Piece Wikia is still understaffed and many rules are not yet finished, One Piece Wikia is targeted heavly by vandals and many editors were pouring in
