One Piece: Unlimited World Red is a video game for the Nintendo 3DS console based on One Piece. This is the fourth game in the Unlimited series, and the second developed for 3DS after Unlimited Cruise SP. An enhanced port of the game was released on July 8th 2014 for Nintendo Wii U, Playstation 3, and July 14th for the Playstation Vita.

GameplayEdit

It follows the same gameplay of previous Unlimited series games such as the butterfly hunting and fishing[1].This game is playable with up to 4 players on both the Nintendo 3DS and Playstation Vita, however only up to 2 players on Nintendo Wii U and Playstation 3. There is also DLC for the game.[2]

In comparison with One Piece Unlimited Cruise SP, the controls have significantly changed. In Unlimited World Red, the Circle button is used for jumping and the Square and Triangle buttons for attacking. The X button is used to dodge, guard and counter enemy attacks, which is new as Unlimited Cruise SP only had the capability to dodge enemy attacks. The SP gauge used for special attacks is now used in a different manner as well. The gauge is empty at first and requires the player to fill it up in order to use special attacks, unlike in Unlimited Cruise SP where the gauge depleted upon use of special attacks.

Plot (Main Story)Edit

Patrick Redfield, Kuzan, and Smoker Defeat the Marines

Red stands over the Marines, with "Smoker" and "Aokiji" by his side.

The story begins with Monkey D. Garp and Sengoku discussing a pirate named "Red Count" Redfield, a man who was on the same level as Whitebeard and Roger in their primes albeit less notorious, who was released by Blackbeard during his raid on Impel Down 2 years ago. He's also called "Red the Aloof" due to his preference to working alone. This occurs while Red is attacking a fleet of Marine battleships, with Aokiji and Smoker seemingly assisting him. Despite what is going on, Red confirms that he's working alone. He then realizes that he has misplaced something.

The scene changes to the Straw Hat Pirates approaching an "Island of Promises", the island village of Transtown, with a companion, Pato. Pato, a pen that can become a tanuki, shows the ability to create any object he writes on a leaf by creating a telescope. Pato, having repaid an unknown favor to the Straw Hats, intends to separate with them on the island to meet someone. The Straw Hats split into groups to resupply, with Luffy going out on his own. Nami tells him to rendezvous at the local inn.

While exploring, Luffy sees a woman being harassed by thugs who expect payment for "protecting the island" despite never being requested to do so. Luffy intervenes and beats the thugs up. The woman, Yadoya, thanks Luffy and treats him to a meal at her inn, after which he naps in. Meanwhile, the other Straw Hats are kidnapped by fake versions of Sanji, Usopp, and Robin. After Luffy wakes, Pato hurriedly appears and relays what he just saw to Luffy, prompting him to rescue them. Before he goes, Yadoya agrees to forgo the bill for the inn if Luffy and his friends do a favor for her, which he promises.

Luffy vs. Punk Hazard Dragon in Unlimited World Red

The Punk Hazard dragon appears before Luffy.

Luffy and Pato travel to what appears to be Punk Hazard, which Luffy vaguely remembers. He encounters and defeats the same dragon he and Zoro killed before, but it disappears before Luffy can eat it. After traversing through the fire and ice sides of the island, he and Pato encounter Caesar Clown. He engages them upon Smiley but is defeated. Pato then discovers Zoro and Franky before Luffy knocks Caesar away with Gomu Gomu no Grizzly Magnum. Zoro and Franky state they woke up there after napping on the Thousand Sunny before Luffy states that they and the rest of the Straw Hats were kidnapped. Back at the inn, the three of them are forced to make true on their promise to Yadoya; the improvement of their town by building establishments such as a local tavern. That evening, Redfield looks on as a sandstorm brews.

The next morning, the four of them set sail to an island that greatly resembles Alabasta. Upon landing, they are greeted by Crocodile who invites them to follow him if they want to find their friends. After going through Alabasta soldiers and Kung-Fu Dugongs, they find Chopper and Usopp fending off more soldiers. They reunite and relax in an empty Yuba Village, where Pato and Chopper (in his Horn Point) dig up a well. Luffy jokingly asks Pato to create a new chef to replace the missing Sanji, but Pato states he can't create things too complicated, like human beings. The group continue into Alubarna where they find and defeat Crocodile at the very top. Crocodile comments on the growing intensity of battles since Whitebeard's death before disappearing in a puff of smoke.

Luffy vs. Lucci in Unlimited World Red

Luffy clashes with Rob Lucci.

Back at the inn, the group discuss their next move when they hear the sound of the Sea Train. They realize the sound came from the next island, which they recognize as Enies Lobby. Upon arrival, Rob Lucci shows up, explaining that he knows where Robin is and will use this second opportunity to kill her. The group continue to the roof of the Courthouse of Justice, and then to the top of the Tower of Justice to defeat Lucci exactly where Luffy did 2 years ago. On defeat, Lucci announces that his powers were given to him by a certain man, and that man prevented Lucci from leaving the island. He disappears in a puff of smoke, leaving behind only a leaf. Through this, they deduce Pato is the source of these enemies and is the reason why the Straw Hats have been disappearing. They also manage to find the remainder of the Straw Hats.

Back at the inn, Pato lets slip that his Boss is responsible for the kidnappings but cannot disclose the motives. However, he agrees to take them to his Boss to find out themselves. He shows remorse at deceiving the Straw Hats, but explains it was his Boss' will which he willfully carries out without question.

Patrick Redfield Carries a Copied Pato

Creating a copy of his subordinate, Red dismisses Pato.

The group next find themselves on Fishman Island, where they are ambushed by a overdosed Hody Jones, who claims divine intervention as the reason behind his chance at revenge. Pato restates he can't create complicated things like Hody, but his Boss could and they will only listen to his Boss. After making their way through Mermaid Cove and Gyoverly Hills, they encounter and defeat Hody in the Gyoncorde Plaza. Red then appears for the first time, whom Pato announces as his Boss, and effortlessly destroys the Hody copy. Robin and Brook comment on his past notoriety. Red reveals he created the surroundings and enemies from the Straw Hats' hearts in order to achieve his goal of becoming the Pirate King. Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji attack in response, but Red effortlessly knocks them and the other Straw Hats away. He almost finishes them off but Pato begs him not to kill them. In response, Red uses Pato's powers to create a copy of Pato himself, discarding the original, saying he doesn't want him to walk a path of carnage that he doesn't want to walk. As he's about to leave, Zoro challenges him once more, so he instead creates a copy of Whitebeard to fight in his stead, but they narrowly defeat him. Pato is at a loss of what to do now that his boss no longer wants him, but Luffy asks what he himself wants to do. He follows them back to Transtown in the meantime.

Hell Memories Gomu Shot

Sanji and Luffy use Hell Memories: Gomu Shot.

Chopper suggests Pato joins the Straw Hats; Luffy says that's for him to decide. Feeling that the next island Red creates is chilly; they soon dock at the Sakura Kingdom on Drum Island. Upon witnessing Hiluluk's sakura cannons go out, the Straw Hats investigate to find Wapol responsible (whom no-one seems to remember). He is easily defeated, but flees. After Sanji and Luffy defeat some familiar enemies, they melt an avalanche caused by Wapol with a combination technique. At the top of his castle, as they prepare to battle Wapol again, Blackbeard appears. Wapol attempts to run away from him again, but Chopper enters his Monster Point and knocks him away. Blackbeard believes it was destiny that Ace died while Luffy lived and challenges him and his crew to a battle, but loses. The crew discover Red, having watched the entire fight from the distance, before disappearing. Pato asks to join Luffy's crew, still wanting to serve his Boss but satisfied that his copy is doing so in his place, but Luffy rejects him. Although most of the crew are confused, Chopper reassures him. He asks the meaning behind his name, but he doesn't know, saying Red gave him the name. Chopper shares the origin of his name.

Patrick Redfield Leaves With Copies of Robin and Pato

Red departs with "Robin" and "Pato".

At the Inn, Pato reveals Red is after a certain Devil Fruit, hoping to prove useful to Luffy. The crew then decide to try and intercept Red before he finds it. They find themselves in Skypiea, where upon reaching Upper Yard they encounter Enel, still wanting to reach Fairy Vearth. Robin explains to Pato that although Enel is fake, they will still fight him because his captain wills it and asks Pato if he want this. The crew encounter Enel by the Golden Belfry in Shandora and he immediately uses 200,000,000 Volt Amaru to fight them, but is defeated the same way he was 2 years ago. Before they can celebrate, Red stands before them; he asks Robin to help him find his fruit. Insulted, Sanji attacks, but is knocked away by Robin's gigantic hand. Shocked, they find a Robin copy by Red's side, who leaves with him.

Luffy vs. Ace in Unlimited World Red

The two brothers square off.

The Straw hats feel they need to search harder now that Red has Robin by her side. Nobody except Luffy recognizes it because it was the island Luffy grew up on. After reminiscing about first meeting Ace, they arrive at a tree stump with three cups of sake on it where Ace appears. Before engaging him, Luffy demands his crew to stand down and fights him one-on-one and Luffy wins. Confused, Pato asks why Luffy fights so hard against someone so important, which Nami explains that it's because he's so important to Luffy. Sanji asks Pato how it feels to be replaced but he retaliates, saying he has no right to talk about Red like that, which Luffy agrees. Upon leaving, Chopper invites Pato to follow. Ace then disappears in flames unlike in smoke like the other copies.
Sanji Blocks Borsalino in Unlimited World Red

Sanji deflects one of Kizaru's laser kicks.

At Transtown, Pato is still unsure of himself; Zoro tells him to stop thinking so much and trust his gut from time to time. The sound of firing artillery leads them to the next island, the frozen battlefield of Marineford, with Admiral Akainu waiting at the end. Remembering his role in the war 2 years ago, Luffy rushes ahead. He's intercepted by Jinbe, but is quickly defeated and rushes ahead. Admiral Kizaru gets in their way and fights the crew, but halfway through the fight the crew tell Luffy to go ahead while the rest of them deal with Kizaru. He makes it past Akainu's Meteor Volcano and some Pacifistas and makes it to Akainu, who insults Luffy by implying his crew won't witness his death. Meanwhile the Straw Hats appear to be getting grossly overpowered by Kizaru, and Akainu launches another Meteor Volcano in their direction to ensure their defeat.

Luffy and Ace Team Up in Unlimited World Red

Ace and Luffy fight as one.

Enraged, Luffy dashes for Akainu but is frozen in place by Admiral Aokiji. Pato tries to free Luffy but is knocked away by Akainu. Right before Luffy is frozen entirely and impaled by an ice spear, the Ace copy appears suddenly and destroys the spear. He engages Aokiji alone and defeats him before freeing Luffy. The Straw Hats also appear, miraculously overcoming their fight with Kizaru. Wounded, Aokiji uses his powers to create a battlefield for Akainu and the two brothers. Pato wonders how Ace is able to act on his own, which Robin believes is due to their bond they showed during their previous fight. Using their respective Fire Fists, the brothers emerge victorious. Ace finally disappears, this time leaving a leaf behind. Pato decides he'll try his hardest for Luffy like Ace did, which Luffy encourages.

When they return to the inn, Yadoya tells the group that large bats have been inexplicably appearing in the town at night; she will go to the plaza to investigate. Pato believes Red is responsible, so he wants to use the opportunity to show his former boss his true feelings. His senses are founded when they see Red atop a bell tower above the plaza. He attacks the group with a multitude of copies of familiar faces, including the Straw Hats themselves. Undeterred, the real Straw Hats plow through the enemies to allow Pato to reach Red. Pato explains that he and his copy are not the same; it must be him who helps Red achieve his goals as an ally, not a tool. Red states that being the Pirate King requires a certain amount of resolve. Surpassing the great names of the past requires abandoning various personality traits he considers weak, including his companionship with Pato.

Proving his resultant success, he holds a Devil Fruit in his hand: the Batto Batto no Mi, Model: Vampire, which he promptly consumes. Claiming to have abandoned his last weakness, his humanity, he kicks Pato away into a building. Angry, Luffy retaliates but Red dodges. He appears on the square, holding an unconscious Yadoya. The crew can only watch in shock as Red bites her neck before dropping her unconscious, aged body on the ground. He stands over her, transformed into a younger, vampiric form. He explains that he stole her youth to regain his lost power. The crew try to fight him, but when he is about to lose he regains all his lost strength. He explains that with the likes of Roger and Newgate around, he gave up his ambition and quietly served his sentence at Impel Down, but with them gone or succumbing to their age, he'll leave the same mark they did, using the immortality granted by his Devil Fruit to become the Pirate King.

Luffy as an Old Man in Unlimited World Red

Even in his severely aged body, Luffy continues to show his resolve.

Luffy refutes this, claiming age doesn't define power, using Whitebeard as an example. When Red uses the now-retired Sengoku and Garp to prove his point, Luffy demands he shows him what he really means. Red complies, using his powers to severely age Luffy, whitening his hair and making his body frail and weak and proceeds to beat Luffy down. Red claims his condition proves his point, but Luffy again talks about Whitebeard's undying will and ambition until his death, and also mentions Rayleigh. Despite his condition, he catches a punch from Red. He talks about the one thing he has in common with the elder pirates: their unwillingness to give up. He overpowers Red and punches him into a building. He says Red has no right to steal the dreams of others when he so easily gives up his own. Pato suddenly speaks up and defends his Boss, saying he does what he does for fear of dying a shadow of his former self. Finally seeing Luffy's point, he proceeds to return Luffy's youth. He tells Luffy he gave up his dreams for fear of having to entrust them to others in his age, which is why he he looked for a way to remain young through the Devil Fruit. Reformed, he returns Yadoya's youth and vows to become the Pirate King with his own power, and Pato returns to his side to help him realize his dreams. Happy, Luffy grabs his copy's captain's coat and accepts one last challenge against Red and Pato.

Patrick Redfield is Defeated

Red is finally defeated.

After a long battle, the Straw Hats emerge victorious. Content, Red concedes. Pato promises to challenge them again in the future for the sake of his Boss, and everyone cheerfully accepts. Brook, in particular, remembers an interesting fact about him: during his time as a pirate, Red, whose full name is Patrick Redfield, was also known as "Pato" for short. The fact that he gave his own name to his companion may have implied that he never meant to abandon him at all. Red, who recognizes Brook, jokingly mentions how different he looks after 50 years. After Luffy and Red challenge each other one last time, the crew set sail.

In a post-credits cutscene, Pato tearfully claims he will get stronger for Red. Remembering the likes of Whitebeard and Roger, he tells Pato that their dream begins now.
