The Mokomo Dukedom[2] is the civilization developed by the Mink Tribe on the living island of Zou in the New World.[3] In the past, it was lead by Hitsugisukan,[4] who was succeeded by the "Ruler of Day", Duke Inuarashi, and the "Ruler of Night", Master Nekomamushi.[5] The two rulers retired at the end of Wano Country Arc, entrusting the nation to the younger generation.[6]

Culture[]

Administration[]

As a dukedom, the country is ruled by a duke (公爵, kōshaku?), but the line of succession is decided by merit rather than bloodline, as the current duke can pass rulership to anyone else in their tribe should they prove themselves worthy of it.

In the past, this title belonged to Hitsugisukan.[7] The title was then passed on to Inuarashi, making him the official sovereign of the kingdom. However, Nekomamushi possessed equal authority as the guardian deity (守護神, shugoshin?) of the Whale Forest. The leadership was divided between the two so each reigned for 12 hours; Inuarashi from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM as the "Ruler of Day", and Nekomamushi from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM as the "Ruler of Night". This division also affected the sleeping habits of the citizens, with townsfolk being diurnal while the forestfolk are noctural.[8] Communication between the two rulers was handled by special aides known as kingsbirds (王の鳥, ō no tori?); the only official ones being Wanda and Carrot.[9] The country also has two combat forces: the Inuarashi Musketeer Squad led by Shishilian, and the Guardians formerly led by Pedro.[10][11] After a decisive battle at Onigashima, Inuarashi and Nekomamushi pass on their authority over to Carrot due to her experience out at sea with the Straw Hat Pirates.

Layout[]

The Mokomo Dukedom is comprised of a sprawling city with several of its ancient buildings embedded in the surrounding rock formations and an area known as the Whale Forest that features a large whale-shaped tree.[1] The entirety of the back is encircled by a large wall, with a gate located near Zunesha's tail.[2]

Geography[]

The area is lush and fertile, with many oddly-shaped trees.[12][1] There is one prominent tree known as the Whale[13] due to its trunk resembling a baleen whale bending upwards.[14]

History[]

Main article: Zou#History

At some point within the last 1000 years, the Mink Tribe established the Mokomo Dukedom on the back of Zunesha.[15]

The ruler 28 years ago was Hitsugisukan. Nekomamushi and Inuarashi came back, 20 years ago, after Oden's execution, and somehow become both rulers of the Dukedom, some time later.

Following the Raid on Onigashima, both Nekomamushi and Inuarashi elected to remain in Wano Country and appointed Carrot as the next ruler.[6]

Trivia[]

  • The name of the dukedom is likely a pun on mokomoko (もこもこ?, meaning "fluffy"), referring to its fur-covered citizens.
