For the arc that takes place in this town, see Loguetown Arc.

Loguetown is a city on the Polestar Islands (ポルスター諸島, Porusutā Shotō?)[2] in the East Blue, covering nearly the entire island it is on, save for a few steep hills. Almost all East Blue ships, especially pirate ships, come here to resupply for the Grand Line, since Loguetown is in a convenient location very close to Reverse Mountain, just out of sight of the Red Line.

The town is famed as both the birthplace and the execution site of former Pirate King Gol D. Roger, giving it the epithet "the town of the beginning and the end" (始まりと終わりの町, Hajimari to Owari no Machi?).

It is the main setting of the Loguetown Arc.

Location and Climate[]

Polestar Islands

The island the city is located on.

Loguetown is situated just north of the Calm Belt and northeast of Reverse Mountain's entrance. Therefore, many East Blue pirates stop there to gather supplies before entering the Grand Line. Since Smoker became the captain of the local Marine base, many pirates were caught before reaching the Grand Line.

Weather and Climate[]

Normally, the weather is bright and sunny, occasionally partly cloudy. While the Straw Hat Pirates were in Loguetown, a major storm unlike any other known weather event occurred right around the area.

Major Locations[]

Execution Platform[]

Loguetown Execution Platform

The execution platform.

The Execution Platform (死刑台, Shikei-dai?), was a scaffolded tower in the center of the town, on which Gol D. Roger was executed. After the execution, the World Government maintained it as a tourist site for twenty-two years, attracting Monkey D. Luffy among other visitors.[3]

During Luffy's visit (and the Buggy Pirates' subsequent assassination attempt), it was completely destroyed by a freak lightning storm.[4]

(As the 4Kids-dubbed anime maintains that Roger had been hanged, it refers to the platform as "the gallows." In addition, at least one character calls it "the doom tower.")

Loguetown Marine Base[]

Loguetown Marine Base

Loguetown's Marine Base.

Captain Smoker was in charge of the base until two years ago. He had a reputation of not letting any pirates escape from the island. This record was lost two years ago when the Straw Hat Pirates and the Buggy and Alvida Alliance escaped. Because of this, Smoker left the base to chase after the escaped pirates.[5]

Arms Shop[]

Arms Shop

Ipponmatsu's sword shop.

The Arms Shop[6] is a family business owned by Ipponmatsu. The shop has been in business for over 200 years. The shop sells antique swords, new swords, and new swords in fashion. It also sells clubs, axes, flintlocks, rifles, armor, daggers, spears, etc. The shop also takes polishing jobs. It used to have a lot of customers until captain Smoker was put in charge of the town. Until 2 years ago, the best sword that the shop had was Yubashiri.

Zoro stopped here to get new swords after Mihawk broke two of his swords in their battle. Zoro found the cursed sword Sandai Kitetsu, and decided to use it after a quick test. Ipponmatsu was amazed at his swordsmanship and gave it to him for free along with Yubashiri, his family heirloom.

Robecca Hanberg[]

Robecca Hanberg[7] is a high class boutique where Hanger works. Nami tried on some clothes there.[8]

The Fisherman King Uotome[]

The Fisherman King Uotome[7] is a fish market owned by Sapi. Sanji bought a blue-finned elephant tuna from him.[9]

Antique House[]

The Antique House is a funky boutique that sells cheap and fashionable clothing.[7] After trying on clothes at Robecca Hanberg and not buying anything, Nami bought an enormous pile of clothes from there.[10]

Glove Factory[]

The Glove Factory is located in Loguetown, neighboring the Robecca Hanberg.[8]

Hotel[]

The following events are Non-Canon and therefore not considered part of the Canon story.

Love Love Pirates[]

Love Love Pirates is an anime-only shop owned by Ed that supposedly sells items that accompanied pirates that returned from the Grand Line.

Gold Roger Bar[]

The Gold Roger Bar is an anime-only bar operated by Raoul. It was formerly one of Loguetown's most popular drinking spots for pirates, and famously served Gol D. Roger the night before he set sail for the Grand Line; awed by Roger's presence and eventual reputation, Raoul renamed the bar after him.

After Roger's execution and the Marines' dominance of Loguetown, the bar's business slowed to the point where Smoker appeared to be its only regular patron, marking each anniversary of the execution with a drink. However, Monkey D. Luffy chanced across it shortly before his own voyage for the Grand Line, and rekindled Raoul's memories of Roger during his brief visit.[12]

History[]

Past[]

Loguetown is the birth place of Gol D. Roger. Upon Roger's surrendering, the marines decided it would be appropriate to execute the Pirate King right at the place of his birth. It was at the moment of his execution in Loguetown, when Roger, with his last words, inspired a whole new generation of pirates, thus starting the new age of piracy.

East Blue Saga[]

Loguetown Arc[]

Upon arriving in Loguetown, the Straw Hat Pirates took their separate ways to do some shopping and exploring. Nami tried on some clothes, Zoro bought new swords and Luffy visited the famed execution platform, eventually climbing on it to check out the view.

While on the platform, Luffy was ambushed by Buggy and Alvida, who managed to trap him on the spot by putting his head through an execution lunette. Just as Buggy was about to decapitate Luffy, a lightning bolt fell upon the platform, hitting Buggy and setting Luffy loose. Among the crowd witnessing the spectacle was Bartolomeo, who was impressed by Luffy's attitude in the face of death and incredible luck, and began idolizing him as a result.

Smoker, the captain of Loguetown's Marine base, witnessed the event and was determined not to let any pirates escape his jurisdiction. The marines captured Buggy's crew and Smoker chased the Straw Hat Pirates as they tried to make a run for their ship. Using his Devil Fruit ability, he managed to corner Luffy and pin him to the ground.

At that moment, a mysterious man appeared and stopped Smoker from arresting Luffy, providing the time needed for the Straw Hats to safely escape the island. A strong gust of wind also helped free Buggy's crew, leaving Smoker unable to capture any of his targets.

Whole Cake Island Saga[]

Zou Arc[]

King Sterry and Queen Sarie Nantokanette stayed in a hotel before heading to the Levely.[11]

Final Saga[]

Egghead Arc[]

An earthquake hits Loguetown as a result from Lulusia Kingdom's destruction.[13]

Translation and Dub Issues[]

While always romanized Loguetown—widely held to be a reference to the English prologue and epilogue, furthering its "beginning and end" motif—in the original manga and anime, the town is renamed Roguetown in both the 4Kids-dubbed anime and the VIZ manga. This likely stems from an assumption that the original spelling was a mistaken attempt to render rogue in the first place (Japanese being notoriously unclear at differentiating 'r' and 'l' sounds), as a reference to the town's most infamous citizen.

It should be noted that the katakana used to spell the name—ローグタウン—generally corresponds to the 'long' o-sound of rogue, rather than the 'short' o-sound of the -logue suffix. While the Japanese anime wavers between these pronunciations, the Funimation anime—which retains Loguetown—always favors the latter.

Trivia[]

  • Though never officially confirmed (e.g. by Rurubu One Piece) the city appears to be mainly designed after Florence, Italy. Two of its most prominent background buildings strongly resemble the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral and the Palazzo Vecchio tower, and the storefronts feature the names of several well-known Florentine businesses, such as the Madova Glove Factory and Ottino.
