The subject of this article is sometimes called "Jinbei" or "Jimbei".
"Knight of the Sea" Jinbe is a whale shark fishman,[1] the second captain of the Sun Pirates after Fisher Tiger,[7] and a former Shichibukai,[3] who attained the position eleven years ago.[7]
His name was first mentioned by Yosaku, when he was explaining about the Shichibukai.[3] However, he is formally introduced much later, during the Impel Down Arc.[1] He renounced his Shichibukai title at the Battle of Marineford, allying himself with the Whitebeard Pirates.[4] During the war, he befriended Monkey D. Luffy, and later allied with him and his crew to prevent the New Fishman Pirates' coup d'état against the Neptune Royal Family and the Ryugu Kingdom. He was even invited to join the Straw Hat Pirates, but declined due to having unfinished business of still being affiliated with Big Mom; however, he promised that once he was ready, he would return to Luffy again and request to join his crew.
Jinbe's first bounty was 
76,000,000.[12] Eventually, his bounty raised to 250,000,000.[1] After he resigned from the Shichibukai, his bounty has been raised to over 400,000,000.[11]
Appearance
Jinbe is a large blue whale shark fishman with a stocky build similar to a sumo wrestler and a face that is commonly associated with various Japanese demons such as the oni. His yellow eyebrows and sideburns are distinctly shaped like those found on such demons, in addition to a bulb-like nose and an angular lower lip pointing upwards. He has a lightning-shaped scar that can be seen from his left side burn and reaching over his left eye which he obtained sometime between Otohime's assassination and meeting Ace. He also possesses two tusk-like conical lower fangs associated with Oni as well; the rest of his teeth from the upper and lower rows are pretty much the same, albeit much smaller. He also has a severe underbite, which makes room for his huge fangs.[1]
He has long, two-toned black hair, with two long stripes, colored gold in the manga and white in the anime, coming from the roots over his forehead and trailing down the back, a topknot, and tuft of hair on his chin with a slight green hue. This topknot did not exist during his time as a member of the Sun Pirates, instead his shorter and flowing black hair trails off half way to a light color concentrated at the back of his head. He kept his chin clean-shaven before joining the Sun Pirates, after which it gradually grew out over time. His hands and feet are also webbed, typical for a fishman, and his limbs that are somewhat thin in comparison with his enormous girth. His gills (which are pale and pinkish in color) are in between his shoulders and neck.[1]
Under his pale red coat (which he swaps for a black one two years later), he appears to be wearing a Coral colored traditional Japanese clothing covered all over with black and white square-shaped patterns with the black and white layers alternating each other (beginning with the black outline from the edge) and ending with a dark square at the middle of each and every one of them. He also ties this attire up with a purple obi like a ribbon around his waist.
Jinbe is often seen wearing different traditional kimono of varying patterns: he wore a karakusa and later a floral design during his time as a member of the Sun Pirates; he wore square designs during his debut and a plain one after the Battle of Marineford. Four years ago, when fighting against Ace, he wore a black gi instead with fish designs on either side of the chest, and a red sash with a tanto tied to it.[13] Two years after the war, while waiting for Luffy at the Sea Forest, his kimono has leaf-patterns. During Caribou's cover story, he is seen in another one patterned with flowers. For footwear, he appears to wear simple geta on his webbed feet. His Sun Pirates tattoo is on the middle of his chest. During the Totland Arc, his kimono has a Jolly Roger design arranged like stripes.
He wore a Neptune Army uniform while he was serving as a soldier, and was often seen smoking a pipe back then.[14] During Otohime's funeral, Jinbe wore a suit.[15]
In Volume 63 SBS, Oda draws the Shichibukai as children. Jinbe as a child is seen with light hair wearing a tattered gi practicing his Fishman Karate. He already had a black belt at this age.

Personality
Jinbe is a fishman of great pride and honor. He is known to the World Government as a pirate-hating pirate, possibly due to the actions of the pirates in Fishman Island, kidnapping fishmen and merfolk to sell them as slaves. However, he has great respect for Whitebeard and his crew as he sees them as a completely different story. Because of what Whitebeard had done for his homeland, Fishman Island, he understands the damage a war between the World Government and Whitebeard would cause. He knows that places like his home, which are protected by simply being part of Whitebeard's territory, would suffer the most should Whitebeard lose the war.[16] Also, despite originally hating pirates, he did not spare a second thought of becoming one in order to aid his brethren Fisher Tiger.
Despite his pride, Jinbe appears to put his priorities and principles over his honor, and is not above retreating from an otherwise unfinished battle (despite being shamed or openly mocked by an opponent) if it was for the sake of the greater good. He also does not seem to hesitate from encouraging others to do likewise for a similar cause, as seen when he pleaded and managed to convince Luffy to prioritize Ace's safety first over avenging his brother's loss against Blackbeard. Jinbe has also displayed great humility regarding his personal strength and status, a trait most unique among the Shichibukai. This was made apparent by his willingness to even lose his status for his refusal to fight against the Whitebeard Pirates.
Also, unlike his former crew mate Arlong, the fact that he is willing to aid a human (Whitebeard) as well as team up with others separates him from the other fishmen. Where as Arlong would never dream of such a thing (even Nami's recruitment into his crew was near slavery), Jinbe proves to be able to at least respect some humans and also acknowledge when he owes one a debt. While he is a fishman with great emotional control, he is empathetic and understanding of the pains of others, such as being brought to tears when Luffy broke down from losing his brother in front of him after he had awoken from the battle at Marineford. Jinbe is also capable of crying aloud when someone dear to him is lost, such as Ace and Tiger.
His personality in the past dramatically contrasts with the apparently tame temper in the present. In a flashback showing a battle between the Sun Pirates and Marines, Jinbe was shown to exhibit excessive brutality to enemies that even made Arlong ask him to stop. He seems to be a no-nonsense person and appears to be quite passive at times. Though he did not agree with Arlong's thinking that humans always looked down on fishmen, he noticed that they always seemed to be afraid of them. After asking a former human slave named Koala why that is, she said it was because they did not know much about them. Jinbe stated that the unknown was scary and remembered Otohime talking about how fishmen do not know anything about humans.
Originally, Jinbe was doubtful of Otohime's ideals, thinking that they did not mean anything. He even openly stated that he did not care about her petition. However, after listening to Fisher Tiger's speech about peace, Jinbe grew supportive of Otohime and even admitted about the trouble the Sun Pirates caused her and joined the Shichibukai to support her cause.
Jinbe shares the same perspective as Vivi on responsibilities. When Luffy asked Jinbe to join the Straw Hats, Jinbe refused saying that there are still things that he has to do. Jinbe's decision also resembles to Vivi's when he also asked Luffy to let him join his crew, if they meet again in the future. According to Neptune, Jinbe tends to take on too much responsibility and should learn not to.
Jinbe states that he does not really care who the boss is of his crew despite his leadership skills so long as they can protect the crew, as shown when he allowed the Sun Pirates to work under Big Mom for their protection.
While having a conversation with Ace in Impel Down, Jinbe says he doesn't lose hope even when a situation says otherwise believing a miracle will happen. This eventually became true when Luffy reached his cell to rescue Ace (although he arrived shortly after Ace was escorted to Marineford). Jinbe states he will not protect a stranger if they do not earn his respect.
As stated by his friend Hack, Jinbe's dream is for there to be friendship between humans and fishmen.[17]
Relationships
Sun Pirates
Fisher Tiger
Jinbe was good friends with Fisher Tiger. They grew up together in the Fishman District and Jinbe saw Tiger as family, evidenced by his habit of calling him big brother Tai. When Tiger attacked Mariejois and became an enemy of the World Government, Jinbe resigned from the Neptune Army and joined Tiger's crew to assist him without a second thought. Jinbe respected Tiger and his leadership a great deal. He was always thoughtful and receptive towards Tiger's opinions. He also seemed to care a lot about Tiger's well being and was not above showing brutality to the Marines who threatened his captain's life. It's been shown that Fisher Tiger confided to Jinbe about the "demons" that dwell in his own heart. When Tiger was fatally wounded and refused a blood transfusion due to it belonging to a human, Jinbe begged, to no avail, for Tiger to live, and cried when Tiger died.
Arlong
While Jinbe and Arlong grew up together in an orphanage in the Fishman District,[5] Jinbe, while a soldier of the Neptune Army, showed hostility towards Arlong when he was harassing the Fishman Island citizens, calling him scum and even trash, indicating that Jinbe frowned upon Arlong's distasteful attitude. Upon Jinbe's entrance into the ranks of Shichibukai, the Sun Pirates disbanded and split into smaller factions. Jinbe felt guilty about releasing Arlong into the East Blue, showing that he objected to Arlong's treatment towards humans. Jinbe states that it was difficult for him to tell Luffy about his connection to Arlong,[18] but after meeting Luffy again after two years, Jinbe musters the strength to reveal that he was the one who allowed the Arlong Pirates to run loose in the East Blue, and was quite shocked to hear that one of Luffy's crewmates suffered personally under Arlong's rule.
Aladine
Jinbe seemed to form a close friendship with Aladine after becoming captain of the Sun Pirates after Fisher Tiger. Like Jinbe, he also understood Fisher Tiger's will. He is also understanding of Jinbe's reasons for not stopping Arlong. One of the reasons why Jinbe joined the Shichibukai was to allow Aladine, along with other members of the Sun Pirates who choose to, to return to Fishman Island as a government pardon.
Hatchan
Jinbe worried over the well-being of Hatchan, seeing the octopus fishman heavily injured. However, it is apparent that Jinbe and Hatchan had not been in touch with each other since Jinbe was unaware that Hatchan escaped imprisonment before meeting him in the Sea Forest. Like Hatchan, Jinbe also carries the guilt of the devastation the Arlong Pirates caused in the East Blue because he allowed them to reside there.
Friends and Allies
Whitebeard
Jinbe has a high respect for Whitebeard. Whitebeard claimed Fishman Island as his territory and, in doing so, saved it from the World Government and other pirate attacks. For this, Jinbe has expressed many times that he owes a great deal of gratitude to the Yonko and refused to participate in the war against Whitebeard, even if it meant losing his Shichibukai title and being imprisoned in Impel Down. Over the years, Jinbe's respect has grown to the point where he will readily declare himself as an adversary to anyone or anything with ill intent upon the Yonko's life, which is why he immediately engaged in battle against Ace on their first encounter, since Ace was out to assassinate Whitebeard at that time.
As for Whitebeard himself, the Yonko appears to have developed a sense of tolerance towards Jinbe, despite the fishman's Shichibukai status (Jinbe has even implied that he visits Whitebeard and his crew from time to time).
Portgas D. Ace
Jinbe and Ace were once enemies (since the latter wanted to kill Whitebeard), and nearly killed each other in a fight that lasted five days. Despite this, the two respected each other deeply and Jinbe was determined to help Ace's brother Luffy rescue him. Upon witnessing Ace's death at the hands of Admiral Akainu, Jinbe was fully prepared to give up his life in revenge and to buy even the smallest amount of time. He also mourned over Ace's death and even shed tears when telling Luffy that Ace was dead.
Silvers Rayleigh
Jinbe also seems to have developed a friendship with the Dark King. At first, Jinbe was surprised when he met Rayleigh in Amazon Lily. They cooperated in stealing a marine ship, circling around Marineford, and ringing the Ox Bell. Jinbe may have a good impression of Rayleigh, due to the Dark King's friendship with Hatchan.
Straw Hat Pirates
He was quite impressed by Luffy's recklessness of breaking into Impel Down in an attempt to save just one life (Ace's), a feat that not even Whitebeard had done. This makes him one of the very few pirates outside of Whitebeard's crew whom Jinbe respects. His respect for Luffy grew as they made their way out of Impel Down to save Ace in Marineford. He also seems to feel gratitude and guilt for Luffy's defeat of Arlong. Upon learning that Luffy is the Revolutionary Dragon's son, Jinbe did not show much surprise.[19] During the battle of Marineford, Jinbe was shown to be just as dedicated to Luffy's well-being and safety as he was to Ace's. The reason is shown in a flashback where Ace asks Jinbe to watch over Luffy if he were to die, and Jinbe responds by stating he will only protect those he cares for. He is later seen saving Luffy from Akainu's magma attack, and escaping with him from Marineford thanks to Trafalgar Law. After Luffy woke up from his coma two weeks later on Amazon Lily, Jinbe was looking after him and saved him from his self-pity and self-inflicting injuries by telling him about the people he can still protect. This makes Luffy realize that he has not lost everything and he still has his crew.
As for Luffy himself, Jinbe's respect seems to be reciprocated, since the Straw Hat captain was seen explaining to his crewmates that he only managed to come back alive from the great war two years ago due to the fishman's protection prior to the time-skip. Also, while Jinbe began his talk about how he set Arlong into East Blue, Luffy pretty much stayed quiet and allowed Jinbe to explain himself before jumping to conclusions (although he fell asleep early into the story). Luffy even agreed to Jinbe's plan of making Luffy a hero even though Luffy does not want to be a hero only because he is Jinbe's friend. After the battle in Gyoncorde Plaza, Jinbe offers to donate his blood to Luffy, saying that the law of Fishman Island which forbid fishmen to donate blood to human does not affect him because he is a pirate. A conscious Luffy then asks Jinbe to join his crew. While he turned down the offer, he said that once he completed his unfinished task, he would meet Luffy again and then Luffy could ask him again.
For the longest time, Jinbe felt ashamed of what Arlong had done to Nami's village and that he did not do anything about it. After telling the history of Fishman Island's discrimination, Jinbe stated that he was willing to accept any punishment. After Nami told him she had no qualms against him or the fishman race as a whole, Jinbe broke into tears, saying he is indebted to her. Nami also refers to him as Jinbe-chan now. She also showed her support of Jinbe joining the Straw Hat Pirates someday since she was smiling when Jinbe said it.
As for the rest of the crew, since meeting them, Jinbe has developed a respect for them for helping him save his kingdom. He fought alongside the Straw Hats against the New Fishman Pirates to prove that humans and Fishmen can work together in peace. Even though Jinbe declined the offer to join the crew due to his affiliation with Big Mom and his own crew, he promised that once his unfinished business was done, he will return to the Straw Hat crew and join them. They in exchange respect Jinbe and wish for him to join.
Emporio Ivankov
Jinbe and Ivankov were on good terms with each other from the time they met when Jinbe was freed from his cell. They both played key roles in the breakout (along with the other named characters of the breakout team) and throughout the war, they were seen together, aiding and protecting Luffy. After the war and before Ivankov left for Kamabakka Kingdom, Ivankov trusted Luffy to be in Jinbe's care.
Hack
Not much is known about his friendship with fellow Fishman Karate practitioner Hack, only that he is a dear friend and he shares the same dream as Jinbe, for there to be friendship between humans and fishmen. The only difference is that Hack wants it "by fists".[17]
Fishman Island
Jinbe is a popular native of Fishman Island and was once a soldier of the Ryugu Kingdom; everyone refers him as "Boss Jinbe" (ジンベエ親分, Jinbē Oyabun?).[5] He is always welcome at Ryugu Palace and comes and goes as he pleases, and even royalty like Fukaboshi and Shirahoshi know him well, and the former was willing to give his message to Luffy.[20] However, after abdicating his Shichibukai position, Jinbe could no longer stay on Fishman Island.[21] Even so, he is still respected by the citizens.
Charlotte Linlin
After Whitebeard's death, the remnants of the Sun Pirates, including Jinbe, would come to work under Big Mom, although she primarily let them do as they pleased. However, Jinbe is not loyal as he is thinking of cutting ties with Big Mom due to Luffy's invitation to join the Straw Hat Pirates, but he worries that her anger will spill to Fishman Island. As his crew and the townsfolk of Whole Cake Island suspected, Linlin does not take the news of his departure very well; though she'll "allow" him to quit, she demands a heavy physical sacrifice in return. As such, it can be inferred that their relationship is not currently on the best grounds. [citation needed]
Koala
During his time with the Sun Pirates they escorted a former human slave named Koala to her home. When he questioned her about why humankind is afraid of fishman she responds it was because they did not know much about them. The impact the young girl left upon Jinbe was the start of his belief in peace between fishmen and humans. He was seen playing and taking care of her, and was happy for Koala when she reached her home town at Foolshout Island. It is unknown if he is aware that Koala is a member of the Revolutionary Army along with Hack.
Trafalgar D. Water Law
Trafalgar D. Water Law rescued Jinbe and Luffy from the Battle of Marineford while also healing their injuries. Jinbe thanks The Surgeon of Death for his assistance but Law responds his wounds will reopen if he continues to move. After the timeskip he is surprised to read in a newspaper that Law has formed an alliance with the Straw Hat Pirates.
Shichibukai
Boa Hancock
According to Hannyabal, despite the title of Shichibukai bestowed upon them, Jinbe had never personally met Boa Hancock prior to her visiting him and Ace at Impel Down.[22] He was rather displeased with her at first, thinking she came to mock Ace, and that he distrusted her when she told them that Luffy was in the prison to save Ace.[23] It is unknown what he thinks of her after realizing that she told the truth and, when in the heat of battle, she attacked Commodore Smoker to protect Luffy and openly stated that Luffy is her beloved. It seems that their relationship now is bordering neutral to friendly, as she allowed him to set foot on Amazon Lily as an exception, where no men, aside from Luffy and Silvers Rayleigh, were allowed before.
Enemies
World Government
Jinbe was an enemy of the Marines and the World Government when he was with the Sun Pirates until he was accepted into the Shichibukai. As a Shichibukai Jinbe and his entire crew were given a pardon for their captain, Fisher Tiger's attack against the World Nobles, and their status as slaves nullified. Jinbe forfeited his position as a Shichibukai for his refusal to assist in the war against the Whitebeard Pirates and was incarcerated in Level 6 of Impel Down. He escaped from Impel Down and waged war against Marineford in order to prevent Ace's death, which ended in failure.
But by siding with Luffy and the Whitebeard Pirates instead of with the Marines during the Battle of Marineford, Jinbe once again became a willing enemy of both the Marines and the World Government. Sengoku was greatly distressed by Jinbe's choice and some Marines such as Akainu and Brandnew refer to Jinbe as a traitor. The Gorousei comments that Jinbe's renouncement of his Shichibukai title was regretful. After the war he returned to Marineford after the war and helped Luffy to ring the Ox Bell.
Fleet Admiral Sakazuki perceives Jinbe as a traitor after his resignation from the Shichibukai and allying himself with Luffy. Although he was more interested in taking Luffy's life, he showed absolutely no mercy to Jinbe on the battlefield and attempted to kill him numerous times while Jinbe was protecting Luffy. Nonetheless, Jinbe is perfectly aware of how dangerous Akainu is, and wasted no time in warning the Straw Hats about how ruthless the Marines have become under his command.
Blackbeard
He also seems to be familiar with the most recent Shichibukai to relinquish the position, Blackbeard, presumably from back in the days when Blackbeard, as Marshall D. Teach, was still a member of the Whitebeard Pirates under 2nd Division Commander Portgas D. Ace.[24] Currently, Jinbe is furious with Blackbeard for Ace's incarceration and execution, but he is prudent about his disposition and abilities.[25] He briefly warned Luffy of Teach's history when he was still part of Whitebeard's crew, saying he was an individual who must not be antagonized recklessly.[24] After the battle for Fishman Island he informs the Straw Hat Pirates of Teach's usurpation of Whitebeard's Yonko status and the Blackbeard Pirates search for people with strong Devil Fruit abilities in order to absorb them citing they would be invaluable targets.
Gekko Moriah
He also appears to be familiar enough with Gekko Moriah to be aware of his zombies' weakness to salt water, and used it to his advantage during their battle.[19] The two engage in fight at Marine Headquarters, with Moriah claiming that he will steal Jinbe's shadow; however, the fishman lands a powerful hit on him before he can do so.[26]
Hody Jones
Hody also considers that Jinbe and the faction of the Sun Pirates that follow him are an annoyance. Even though Jinbe had no idea that Hody was the one who actually killed Otohime (until Hody revealed it),[27] he seems to be the only one outside the Fishman District to be aware of Hody's dark nature since he had been keeping tabs on Hody while he was plotting something in the Fishman District. During the confrontation at Gyoncorde Plaza, Hody states that he hates Jinbe the most for not being an enemy of humans especially after the death of Fisher Tiger. By assisting the very humans who defeated Arlong, the Straw Hat Pirates, Hody considers Jinbe to be lower than Neptune.[28]
Caribou
When Caribou woke up, he attempted again to kidnap mermaids but was captured by Jinbe. Jinbe takes him in a coated boat up to the surface and eventually turns him over to G-5 Marine Commodore Yarisugi.
Vander Decken IX
No direct interaction is seen between the two but Jinbe is aware of Decken's obsession with Shirahoshi and his ingestion of a Devil Fruit. He assists Luffy by giving him Bubble Coral to engage him on Noah and defeats his underling Wadatsumi.
Other
Crocodile
Among his fellow Shichibukai, Jinbe seems to have some sort of history with his former peer Crocodile and is noticeably upset upon realizing Crocodile is incarcerated in the cell adjacent his own. Upon their release, Jinbe told Crocodile to leave Whitebeard alone. Crocodile's only response was asking him if he wanted to fight. However in the late stages of the Battle of Marineford, Crocodile helps Jinbe and Luffy to escape from Akainu.
Wadatsumi
Because Wadatsumi and his crew aided Hody Jones in his attempts to take over Fishman Island, Jinbe considered him an enemy and fought against him with the Straw Hats, where he teamed up with Sanji to take him down. During Solo Journey of Jinbe, Knight of the Sea, Jinbe encountered Wadatsumi again where he learns of the latter posing a sea god and taking offerings by throwing homes at the bottom of the sea which unknowingly led to the sea monsters attacking the port town. Jinbe scolded Wadatsumi for his actions and watched as he and the sea monsters apologized to the people for the misunderstanding. With all hostilities put aside, Jinbe and Wadatsumi celebrated with the residents of the port town and the sea monsters. The next day, Wadatsumi asked Jinbe if he can accompany him on his journey, an offer which was accepted as the two were seen leaving the town together.
Abilities and Powers
It is stated that Jinbe was able to battle Portgas D. Ace on equal terms, despite Ace possessing Logia powers. They both nearly killed each other in a five-day long fight just before Ace was taken in by Whitebeard, and in Impel Down, he and Ace shared a cell on Level 6.[29] He was able to easily punch Gekko Moriah (a fellow Shichibukai) a few meters away, almost knocking him out.
Jinbe also has a knack for discerning military strategies after witnessing any subtle change in enemy formations, as seen when he quickly guessed that Magellan dispatched the order to the battleships outside Impel Down to flee during the mass breakout, and during the battle in Marineford where he surmises that the Marines were plotting something after Ivankov informs him that the enemy is retreating further into the plaza. He also has some penchant for strategy as he divulges a way to smuggle Luffy and his crew into Gyoncorde Plaza while deceiving Hody into believing he and Princess Shirahoshi were captured.
As a fishman who is so familiar with the sea, he is a capable helmsman, shown when he steered a stolen Marine battleship. The anime depicts his skill at this even greater, where despite steering a massive and unfamiliar ship, he was easily able to dodge cannon fire from over a dozen battleships, with the ship receiving hardly any damage.
Also, Jinbe is also aware of the existence of Haki, as he commented on Luffy's Haoshoku Haki he unleashed on the New Fishman Pirates.
Though strong, he admitted that he is of no use in land battles, implying he is much stronger at sea. Jinbe stands up to this claim when he lifted one of Impel Down's massive entrance doors with little effort and used it as a raft to provide passage over the sea for Crocodile, Mr. 1, and Buggy (all Devil Fruit users), with himself acting as the raft's propeller underneath. He not only managed to pursue the fleeing battleships, but even outmaneuvered the incoming cannonballs fired at them by the Marines with relative ease, all the while bypassing the Sea Kings that infested the surrounding waters of the Calm Belt.
From his demonstration of underwater activity, it is obvious that he does not have the powers of a Devil Fruit, even at one point cursing the weakness of Devil Fruit users as he saved them from drowning. His power over sea water may very well make Jinbe a natural enemy of all Devil Fruit users, as seen in his fight against Gekko Moriah in Marineford, where the fishman rendered Moriah's ability to summon his zombies useless by splashing them with sea water, thus purifying them with the salt from the seawater.
His power and influence are so great, departing from even a Yonko's organization would severely diminish their crew's strength.
Physical Abilities
Being a fishman, Jinbe possesses immense strength. He is the most powerful fishman seen thus far, shown when he threw away a giant fishman with just one kick. He also appears to be quite swift, even on dry land, in contrast to his large size. He could intercept an enraged Luffy (in Gear Second mode) and prevent him from further assaulting Blackbeard, and later Akainu, when the latter was about to deal a second life-crippling blow upon the already-injured Ace (who was being held by Luffy) in the latter's last moments. In the anime, when struck by Arlong in face, he wasn't fazed and easily defeated Arlong not long after fighting.
Jinbe has a huge tolerance for pain: not only was he one of the few people to be able to take a "baptizing" in boiling water in Impel Down without flinching (which is considered an impressive feat),[29] he could also stop a direct magma punch from Akainu with his bare hand, unperturbed despite being badly burned, and took a direct hit from Akainu, which pierced his body completely, and his only reaction was to apologize to Luffy for allowing him further pain. Oddly enough, he exclaimed in pain when bitten by Luffy, though this is most likely due to the fact that he was prepared for Akainu's attack, but was caught off guard from Luffy's bite.
Fishman Karate

Jinbe is a master of Fishman Karate, which he can use to knock away many opponents at once. He is skilled enough that he became a black belt while he was still a child. His skill is such that his strikes do not even need to make physical contact with an enemy as the water particles in the air will blow them away after a few seconds of time from the attack's initiation. Another example of his strength and Fishman Karate level is that he defeated Minorhinoceros, one of the four Jailer Beasts, with a single uppercut.
He also displays the ability to manipulate water as if it were a tangible cloth through Fishman Karate, even using it to attack from a distance. He can cause devastating damage with this kind of technique, to both people and ships. Jinbe later reveals that Fishman Karate allows him to control all the water within his vicinity including the water in a person's body. Jinbe demonstrated this ability by splashing seawater on Moriah's zombies even though he was standing on a battlefield covered in solid ice. And with this ability, he is able to harm Luffy despite him being rubber. He is also able to secrete water from his body like Hody after overdosing on Energy Steroids.
Thanks to his mastery of Fishman Karate, Jinbe can perform blocking moves which are able to stop attacks as powerful as the thrusts from a shadow-strengthened Gekko Moriah, a member of the Shichibukai. He was even able to stop Wadatsumi's punch, who is a giant fishman and had also taken an energy steroid, with a single kick and even broke one of his fingers. It should be noted that a few moments before, Wadatsumi had brutally defeated Surume, a massive Kraken well-known for its abilities. Moments before this he was able to deflect a super powered Hody Jones's water shot with relative ease, with Jinbe even commenting that Hody's own mastery of the fighting style pales in comparison to his. Also Jinbe is capable of using Fishman Karate’s hidden technique Buraikan. With this attack Jinbe blasts the opponent’s body with water. After Jinbe used this powerful attack, he sent Wadatsumi flying into the air.
Interactions with Marine Life

Among fishmen, Jinbe has shown the unique ability to communicate with fish, even over long distances. The ability to speak with fish is usually unique to merfolks, so Jinbe's ability to do so is considered noteworthy by Crocodile.[18]
He summoned a large school of whale sharks to the Calm Belt (which was usually too dangerous, with the Sea Kings infesting it) to assist him in a mass-breakout of Impel Down. He can give the whale sharks precise orders, so they understand and obey him.[30]
Due to the Calm Belt being dangerously inhabited by Sea Kings, Jinbe would summon his whale-shark comrades to help him to pass through it, as he did when leaving Amazon Lily.[31] This indicates that the whale sharks are capable of outmaneuvering the Sea Kings, something that the former Shichibukai admits is troublesome for himself.
Weapons
He was seen with a silver trident when he was a soldier in the Neptune Army. However, he was never shown using it. Other than that it was shown that he had a tanto under his belt when he was fighting Ace, but he did not use it.[13]
History
Past
Fisher Tiger's Time
Jinbe grew up in the orphanage that became the Fishman District, alongside Arlong, Macro, and Fisher Tiger. He trained at the Fishman Karate Dojo at an early age and earned a black belt in Fishman Karate while still in his childhood. Around fifteen years before the current storyline, Jinbe was a soldier of the Neptune Army. While Otohime was preaching to her people, Jinbe commented that her preaching was going nowhere. He was then seen frowning at Arlong's ill-mannered behavior towards the Fishman Island citizens. When Arlong was harassing a new recruit of the Neptune Army, Jinbe scornfully commanded Arlong to let him go, to which Arlong snidely complied.[6] Jinbe and Arlong then each gave Fisher Tiger equally warm greetings after he returned to the island from an adventure. After Fisher Tiger attacked Mariejois and became an enemy of the World Government, Jinbe resigned from the military and joined the Sun Pirates.[5]

During a battle with the Marines, Jinbe displayed his brutality by beating unconscious Marines. Jinbe scorned them for overlooking slavery and calling freeing slaves a crime. During their time roaming the Grand Line, the Sun Pirates battled numerous Marines including those led by Rear Admiral Kadar. After the battle, Tiger had a discussion with Jinbe and Arlong telling them not to kill humans; to do otherwise would mean stooping to their level. Tiger went on to say that their ultimate goal was freeing the oppressed and not becoming cold-blooded murderers. This did not sit well with Arlong and he suggested to Tiger that they should instill fear in humans by using ruthlessness and extreme brutality. Jinbe smacked Arlong in the head to silence him. Later, Tiger spoke to Jinbe alone and relayed his concerns that Otohime may view himself and Arlong as equally ruthless, and alluded to the demons of the past that lurked within his heart.
A few years later, the Sun Pirates visited an island where a former slave of Mariejois named Koala resided. The inhabitants there had no way of returning the girl to her homeland so they asked the Sun Pirates to take her. After taking the girl, Jinbe showed his sympathy upon seeing how traumatized she was.
Jinbe tried to understand why the girl was so afraid of them, which she explained was simply a matter of knowing nothing about them. As the Sun Pirates' voyage continued, she warmed up to him and the other pirates, and most of them to her. However, when they reached her hometown, the Sun Pirates were ambushed by marines led by Rear Admiral Strawberry and tipped off by the villagers, causing Jinbe and the other fish- and mermen to abandon ship and steal a marine vessel. Unfortunately for Fisher Tiger, he was badly wounded during the battle. After escaping the marines, Jinbe along with the rest of the Sun Pirates surrounded Fisher Tiger's bed as he confessed about his past as a slave and how, though he tried, he could not stop hating humans and so could not accept their blood in his body. Jinbe begged for Fisher Tiger to live, but he eventually passed away with Jinbe and the other crew members crying in misery.
After Tiger's Death
After Tiger's death and Arlong's capture, Jinbe took over Fisher Tiger's legacy and became the new captain of the crew. While reading a newspaper explaining Tiger's death, Jinbe noticed that Arlong had lied about how he died. The Sun Pirates battled more enemies, but Jinbe continued living by Tiger's will of not killing anyone. Eventually, his bounty raised to 250,000,000. Then one day, a government messenger bat sent Jinbe an invitation to join the Shichibukai. Chew suggested that the Sun Pirates should take an opportunity to make an infamous name for themselves, but Jinbe told the crew that he was thinking about accepting the government's offer. He then spoke with King Neptune,[7] telling him about his plan to strengthen the bond between species.[32]

With Jinbe's acceptance into the Shichibukai, Arlong was released. Arlong showed his resentment towards Jinbe and told him that he was going back to being captain of the Arlong Pirates. Arlong told Jinbe to kill him if he wanted to stop him or Arlong would do as he pleased. Arlong's arrogance lead both him and Jinbe into a fight, leaving Arlong severely beaten and carried off afterward. With that settled, Jinbe and Arlong went on their separate ways. Jinbe was then seen on his ship, expressing disappointment that Arlong could not understand Fisher Tiger's will. Aladdin assured Jinbe that if Arlong went too far, they would have to stop him themselves.[7]
Some time later, an uproar occurred on Fishman Island when a World Noble arrived to the island. Jinbe and his faction of the Sun Pirates were present on the island. The former fishman slaves attempted to kill the noble, but Otohime stopped them and then preached to the people about not passing their hatred to their children. After hearing her words, Jinbe recalls Fisher Tiger's last words mirroring the same ideal. When the queen was threatened by the noble she was protecting, Jinbe then witnessed Shirahoshi's ability to call Sea Kings. Jinbe and everyone else present were stunned by this revelation. After Otohime accompanied the noble to the surface, the people of the island anxiously waited for her. Jinbe told the children worried for her that all they could do was believe in the queen.[33]
The queen returned safe and sound and, with the letter of a World Noble's support in hand, she finally touched the Fishman Island citizens and gained their support and their signatures. Her success, however, was short lived. One day in the Gyoncorde Plaza, the box containing all of the signatures suddenly caught fire, and in the ensuing confusion, Otohime was shot.[34] Jinbe then ordered the soldiers to protect the royal family. After Otohime died, Hody Jones claimed that he captured the culprit: a human pirate. Jinbe told Hody to keep it quiet for the sake of the queen's ideals, but Hody refused to comply.[15]

Jinbe later attended Otohime's funeral, tearful, alongside Aladdin and watched Fukaboshi's speech through a visual broadcast.[15]
About two years before the start of the series, when Portgas D. Ace attempted to challenge Whitebeard, the pirate who protected Fishman Island, Jinbe stood prepared to fight Ace, due to the fishman seeing Whitebeard as a hero. The two pirates fought non-stop for five days, nearly killing each other, until they finally collapsed from exhaustion.[13] After Ace joined the Whitebeard Pirates, he and Jinbe developed a more amicable relationship.
Summit War Saga
Impel Down Arc

Sometime after Ace's capture, Jinbe was also imprisoned in Impel Down, due to being the only member of the Shichibukai who refused the summons of the World Government to stand against the Whitebeard Pirates. He had decided to defy the Marines and was prepared to lose his status as a Shichibukai in the process.[35]
He was held in the same cell as Portgas D. Ace.[29] There, he stated that he would gladly give his life to end the fighting.[1]
He was later seen talking with Ace about how Whitebeard saved Fishman Island and the reasons he's prepared to die to stop the fighting. Ace would then pass the time prior to his death sentence by sharing tales of his younger brother, Monkey D. Luffy, with the fishman.
Knowing that Ace's captivity, as well as his impending execution were being used to incur Whitebeard's wrath, Jinbe further stated that he wanted to break his cellmate out of the Great Gaol. He also stated that he would stop the war from occurring, telling Ace that he still trusted in miracles and luck. However, this brought out a reaction from Crocodile, who explained to Jinbe and Ace that there are many pirates who have a grudge against Whitebeard.
Ace also personally asked Jinbe to take care of Luffy for him once he's gone. Jinbe declined, saying that even though it was Ace who asked, he has no obligation to look after someone he considers a complete stranger in the pirate-infested world they are in.
Jinbe and Ace were visited by another Shichibukai, Boa Hancock, who wanted to see Ace. Hancock claimed that she simply wanted to see the prisoner triggering the war against Whitebeard which she would be joining. Jinbe, apparently under the impression that the female Shichibukai was only there to gloat at his and Ace's imprisonment, remarked that even the "idle empress" would go to war to save her Shichibukai position, seeing this as a low point for Hancock. Hancock told Jinbe she meant no harm to them and cryptically revealed to Ace that his brother was trying to rescue him before leaving.
When Ace told Jinbe this, he described Luffy's behavior as "reckless".[22] Jinbe also pointed out that although he did not personally know Hancock, there was a possibility that she was lying. However, Ace countered that Hancock would not go out of her way to lie to him, and knowing Luffy, his breaking into Impel Down after hearing Ace's incarceration down there was exactly the sort of crazy thing Luffy would do.
About six hours before Ace's execution, when Magellan came to Level 6 to escort Ace to his transfer to Marineford, Jinbe could do nothing but sit in his cell and watch.
When Luffy, Emporio Ivankov, and Inazuma reached Level 6, Jinbe immediately recognized Luffy as Ace's brother due to the straw hat Luffy wears, and wasted no time yelling to the Straw Hat that the prison staff extracted Ace from his cell only moments ago and that there was still a chance to catch up to him. After Ivankov convinced Luffy into releasing Crocodile from his cell when the former Shichibukai offered assistance in providing a means to escape, Jinbe pleaded to be released as well, as he too wanted to save Ace.
Luffy, realizing Jinbe's honesty, agreed to free him, earning him the fishman's gratitude. Upon his release, Jinbe immediately glared menacingly at Crocodile (who was also simultaneously released by Inazuma) and made it clear that he would not allow him to kill Whitebeard. Crocodile, unfazed, asked Jinbe if he wanted to fight to the death.
Afterward, he and the others went up through Level 5 to Level 4, where Jinbe re-evaluated the designated time for Ace's execution, set to occur at 3 o'clock sharp. He also concluded that if Whitebeard and his crew made preparations beforehand, with Ace being escorted out in the open sea, the battle between the World Government and the Whitebeard Pirates could break out any time. After Crocodile reduced the gateway between Levels 5 and 4 to dust, Jinbe demonstrated his Fishman Karate by punching the jailers and launching a shock wave that wiped out the line of enemies descending upon him and his comrades.[36]

When the three remaining Jailer Beasts, led by Sadi, suddenly appeared, Jinbe urged Luffy to move further ahead and let him and the others worry about the three beasts. He lamented on the fact that he is not as powerful on dry land as he is out in the open sea. Despite this claim, Jinbe further showed his strength by taking out one of the Jailer Beasts (the Minorhinoceros) with one powerful blow along side Crocodile and Luffy, both of whom defeated the other two. Jinbe continued in aiding the rebelling inmates as they rioted further up to Level 4, where they were momentarily halted at the entrance to Level 3 by Hannyabal (backed by a large platoon of bazooka-wielding jailers stationed at the other side of the entrance), whom Luffy made short work of.
But it was the unexpected arrival of Marshall D. Teach that truly finished the Vice-Warden off. Jinbe recognized the interloper as the one responsible for Ace's capture and was immediately angered, and asked what Teach was doing in Impel Down, immediately followed by asking if Teach ought to be called Blackbeard now. Blackbeard only replied that the fishman should not get worked up too soon, apparently aware that he and Ace were friends, and that he (Blackbeard) was only partly responsible for Ace's current predicament. As Luffy then started to attack Blackbeard, giving him significant injury, Jinbe stopped Luffy from wasting his time fighting Blackbeard, telling him to consider the rescue of Ace as top priority.
The breakout army eventually reached Level 1, and they united their forces with Buggy and Mr. 3's rioting squad. Jinbe then noticed that Magellan ordered the guards to do something with the ships outside of the fortress, and Jinbe informed them that they needed to hurry out of the prison. Jinbe then lead the assault on the retreating warships as Luffy stayed to fight Magellan.

Jinbe, along with Crocodile, Buggy, and Mr. 1 went to steal one of the battleships that was sailing off, with Jinbe carrying the rest of them on a makeshift raft. Jinbe then fiercely attacked the battleships, destroying half of one with a Spear Wave without much effort before being scolded by Crocodile. When the battleships near the one attacked by Crocodile, Buggy, and Mr. 1 tried to sink them with the whole ship, Jinbe protected them by watering the cannons and making them useless. Later, he helped Luffy, Mr. 3, Inazuma, and Ivankov escape from Magellan, calling a school of giant whale sharks as backup.[30]
As the survivors were transferred onto the ship, Jinbe began to steer the ship towards the Gates of Justice. From an earlier conversation, Mr. 2 Bon Kurei revealed that he intended to stay behind, so he could disguise himself as Magellan and sneak back into the prison to open the Gates for everyone else. Mr. 2 requested that Jinbe not tell Luffy until they passed through the Gates, so the Baby Den Den Mushi's signal would be cut off, preventing any tearful goodbyes.
However, when confronted by Luffy, Jinbe told of what happened before they passed the Gates, and protested Luffy's desire to go back to rescue Mr. 2, in that returning would only throw away what Mr. 2 sacrificed for. However, Jinbe gave Luffy a Baby Den Den Mushi to have one final talk with Mr. 2 before the signal would be severed.[37]
Marineford Arc
Jinbe felt a certain amount of gratitude and guilt toward Luffy for being the one who had to defeat Arlong. However, he decided to temporarily set the matter aside and talk about it later in order to focus on their goal of saving Ace.[18]

After the successful escape through the Gates of Justice, Jinbe finally introduced himself to Luffy, revealing he was a Shichibukai (to Luffy's surprise), or most likely a former one since he escaped Impel Down with the intent to save Ace. As the crew came into sight of the Gates of Justice, Jinbe told Luffy that, if it had not been for the wind not blowing against them, they would've arrived sooner and then asked the latter how were they going to open the gates.[38] Later, when Whitebeard's fleet finally arrived, the Gates of Justice opened for them.
After landing at Marineford, Jinbe retrieved all the Devil Fruit users who fell into the water and then shouted to Fleet Admiral Sengoku that he resigned from the Shichibukai.[4]

When Moriah created an army of zombies, Jinbe splashed them all with saltwater, causing the shadows to leave the reanimated bodies.[19] Sengoku's revelation that Dragon is Luffy's father seemed to have spurred Jinbe into making some kind of connection.[19] He then battled against Moriah, who was after his shadow. Despite being augmented with shadows, Moriah was sent reeling after one of Jinbe's punches.[26] Despite Moriah only mildly hurt, he broke off from attacking further, leaving Moriah infuriated.[39]
Upon seeing Squard stabbing Whitebeard due to Sengoku's plan, Jinbe expressed shock at what just happened.[40] When the Marines raised the siege wall to trap all the pirates and to burn them to death with Akainu's Meteor Volcano, Jinbe launched Luffy over the wall with one of his water streams, per Luffy's request.
Later, he was seen together with Ivankov on top of the siege wall. He was then seen asking a pirate doctor to attend to Luffy's injuries before declaring that he would die in the war at Marineford. However, thanks to Ivankov, Luffy did not require any help. When Whitebeard was badly injured and as high ranked marine officers attacked him, Jinbe was among the pirates who formed a formation behind Whitebeard in order to protect him.

He then watched Luffy made his way to the execution platform and was very glad that Luffy freed Ace. Jinbe then accompanied Ace and Luffy as they made their escape. After Akainu dealt the fatal blow to Ace, he looked on in horror, but then defended Ace from a second attack, declaring that he did not value his life and that if he could do even a little to help Ace, it would be worth it. Unfortunately, it was already too late for Ace, and Jinbe was among the many who mourn Ace's loss. Marco then told Jinbe to grab Luffy and run and Jinbe complied.[41]

Jinbe continued to run with Luffy, not looking back as Whitebeard spoke his last words.[42] After Whitebeard's death, Akainu appeared in front of Jinbe and once again told him to give Luffy to him. Jinbe replied that he would rather die than give up on Luffy, thinking back to Ace's request to look after Luffy. As Akainu prepared himself to attack, Ivankov appeared and attacked Akainu with a Hell Wink.[43] However, the attack did not stop Akainu. Jinbe hoped to jump into the sea to gain the upper hand but found the water below to be frozen. Akainu managed to strike Jinbe and harmed Luffy at the same time. Jinbe apologized to Luffy for letting him get injured.[44]

When Akainu was about to finish off Jinbe and Luffy, Crocodile came and repelled the admiral and then summoned a sandstorm to launch Jinbe and Luffy into the air to get them out of the admiral's reach. Jinbe, while carrying Luffy, was then caught (unintentionally) by Buggy, who was floating high in the air also trying to escape (made possible by the once-again frozen sea, allowing him a decent foothold). After barely maneuvering out of the way of Akainu's colossal magma fist, Buggy then carried Jinbe (who lapsed into unconsciousness) and Luffy to the just emerged ship of the Heart Pirates.[44]
Buggy threw Jinbe and Luffy onto Law's Submarine and they were then both safely carried in by Law's crew. The submarine soon submerged and successfully escaped, taking them far from the battlefield. Jinbe was later seen lying next to Luffy in Law's sick bay, with Law standing over next to them and instructing his crew to ready the ex-Shichibukai and Supernova's treatment.[45]
Post-War Arc

Jinbe later woke up and thanked Law for saving him before meeting Ivankov again. Despite Law telling Jinbe to rest, Jinbe found it impossible as losing Ace and Whitebeard was too much for his heart to bear. The First Son of the Sea also commented that he was worried about Luffy, fearing the moment he wakes up and realizes his brother is dead. Ivankov and his followers soon depart and entrusted Jinbe with Luffy.[46]
Two weeks after the war at Marineford, Luffy woke up and went on a rampage in Amazon Lily. Jinbe asked Law what would happen if Luffy continued, to which Law replied he would most likely die. Jinbe caught up to Luffy and tried to inform him of Ace's death, but found out that Luffy already realized that. He later teared up after seeing Luffy crying in grief. Luffy demanded to be left alone, but Jinbe stated he cannot leave Luffy to injure himself further. Luffy asserted that he could do what he will with his own body, and Jinbe countered that Ace was also free to live or die as he wished. Luffy then tried attacking Jinbe, who quickly dodged his attack and slammed him into the ground. Luffy continued by biting on his arm, at which Jinbe became very irritated and pinned him against a rock. He told Luffy that he must endure and move past his pain, asserting that he has not yet lost everything. Luffy spoke of his crew and how he wanted to see them, at which Jinbe was relieved that Luffy has found something to hold onto.

He later carried Luffy back to the shore, where they met with Silvers Rayleigh, whose very presence Jinbe was scarcely able to believe. Hancock, her sisters, and Lady Nyon soon arrived after that, bearing food that enticed Jinbe. Hancock told him off, as she prepared the food solely to help Luffy's recovery, but reluctantly allowed Jinbe to have some, and so the fishman digged in and encouraged Luffy to partake as well.[47]
Later, he returned to Marineford with Luffy and Rayleigh. He took part in stealing a marine ship, circling around Marineford, and ringing the Ox Bell. He was later seen on the Kuja ship, getting irritated by the Kujas pulling on his face. Soon after, he and Luffy parted ways with Jinbe promising to wait for Luffy and his crew on Fishman Island.
Fishman Island Saga

Unfortunately, Jinbe had to leave Fishman Island with his fellow Sun Pirates shortly after the war ended and could not meet Luffy at Fishman Island as he originally planned to do. Apparently, the Sun Pirates could only stay on the island as long as Jinbe was a Shichibukai. After Jinbe abdicated his position, he and his crew were reinstated as criminals and so could not stay. Keimi relayed this information to Luffy, saying that it was much more complicated than the way she was explaining it.[21] Some time before he left, he gave Prince Fukaboshi a message to relate to Luffy, warning him not to fight Hody Jones and that he would be waiting in the Sea Forest.[20] As he was waiting, he sat in front of the grave of Queen Otohime. Jinbe commented that even after her death, no one has forgotten her ideals.[48]
Later, Luffy, Shirahoshi, Megalo, Chopper, Hatchan, and Sanji arrived at the Sea Forest. Jinbe was overjoyed to see Luffy again and deeply surprised that Shirahoshi was out of Hard-Shell Tower, and was also surprised to see Hatchan, who was supposed to have been captured with the other Arlong Pirates. Jinbe then asked Luffy to explain why he brought Shirahoshi out of her tower. After Luffy reassured Jinbe about Shirahoshi's safety by intercepting an axe, Jinbe commented on how carefree Luffy was.
While Shirahoshi was paying her respects to her deceased mother in front of her grave, Luffy inquired about the grave. Jinbe informed Luffy that the grave belonged her mother. Nami and Keimi soon arrived bearing terrible news about Hody Jones' rampage in the Ryugu Palace. Jinbe decided to explain the situation as quickly as he can and revealed to the group that he was responsible for allowing Arlong to venture into the East Blue.

Before Jinbe began his explanation, he told a distressed Shirahoshi not to worry about her father, saying that he would be saved from the clutches of the New Fishman Pirates. After Nami asked Jinbe about him setting Arlong loose, Sanji stated that he heard about Jinbe from Yosaku and he thought that Jinbe was as bad as Arlong and was surprised that he allied with Luffy. Sanji then informed the ex-Shichibukai about Nami's suffering at the hands of Arlong and warned him that what he said next would determine whether or not he should be forgiven. Jinbe started off by explaining the dark past of the fishmen and merfolk, as well as the respective ideals of Queen Otohime and Fisher Tiger.
After finishing his story, Jinbe stated that he would take any punishment Nami desired. Nami relieved Jinbe of the blame since Arlong was the guilty one. Jinbe expressed his tearful gratitude. He then reviewed the current situation on Fishman Island. Jinbe said that he knew Hody was scheming something after he left the Neptune Army, but Hody managed to keep Jinbe from getting any word of it. Hatchan started revealing Hody's plan but was interrupted when a visual Den Den Mushi appeared and broadcasted Hody's speech to Fishman Island.
When Hody showed the chained-up Neptune, Nami remarked on how the other Straw Hats, mainly Zoro, caused him to be captured. Jinbe was shocked and exasperated at the news, but Keimi explained that it was a big misunderstanding and that the Straw Hats were attacked first. Hody went on in detail of his plan to recreate the Ryugu Kingdom as well as execute Neptune and the imprisoned Zoro, Usopp, and Brook. Shirahoshi attempted to go with Megalo to rescue her father, but Jinbe stopped her. Luffy resolved to fight Hody, but Jinbe told him not to, saying that a human fighting Hody would only increase the fishmen's hatred towards humans. Luffy said that he needed to rescue his friends trapped at the palace and that if Jinbe wanted to stop him, he would have to fight him. Jinbe regrettably agreed and prepared himself.

Luffy remained insistent on going to Ryugu Palace. He tried to hop on Megalo, but Jinbe stopped him using Fishmen Karate. Luffy counterattacked using Jet Stamp and Jinbe blocked him. They then charged at each other but suddenly a clone of Robin appeared in between them, shocking Jinbe at her unexpected appearance and yelled at her to move out of the way. Before Luffy and Jinbe collided, "Robin" vanished and the two hit each other. After the real Robin appeared and said that friends shouldn't fight, Jinbe once again tried to reason with Luffy, but the Straw Hat captain remained stubborn. Jinbe eventually came up with a plan that would make Luffy a hero instead of a villain. At first, Luffy disagreed but decided to go along with it when Jinbe agreed to give him all the meat he wants.
He was later seen riding on Megalo with Shirahoshi, heading to Gyoncorde Plaza to save the king. He and Shirahoshi soon saw what appeared to be King Neptune, but was actually a balloon dummy set as a trap. Shirahoshi was easily deceived, and when they approached it, they were ensnared in a net. They were then tied up and taken to the plaza. Shirahoshi tearfully apologized to Jinbe for falling for the enemies' trick. Jinbe was not deterred since he planned on letting himself get captured from the start. Hody, thinking that his plan was going smoothly, was overjoyed and revealed to everyone that he was the one who truly killed Otohime. Jinbe was stunned at this revelation. When Hody gloated about killing Otohime right in Shirahoshi's face, the princess said that she knew all along, shocking Jinbe and the others present.

Shirahoshi explained that Megalo witnessed Hody killing Otohime and relayed the information to her. Jinbe asked Shirahoshi about why she never told anyone. Shirahoshi tearfully stated that she was following her mother's last wish of not holding any hatred towards the killer. Jinbe was surprised that Shirahoshi could actually uphold her promise and commented on Shirahoshi's strong spirit. Hody, on the other hand, ridiculed the princess, saying that her kindness and mercy would lead to the deaths of the rest of her family. Jinbe assured the princess that she did nothing wrong. When Hody was about to kill Neptune, Luffy jumped out of Megalo's mouth and kicked Hody a great distance back. Jinbe was surprised that Luffy actually came out earlier than planned, but relented that it could not be helped. Nami retrieved the World Noble's letter, Robin freed the king and the princes, and Hoe took them to safety. When the rest of the Straw Hats appeared, Jinbe stood among them, preparing to fight against the New Fishman Pirates.
After Nami gave Shirahoshi the World Noble's letter, Jinbe told the princess that he will help protect her ideals. Jinbe was awed when Luffy defeated half of Hody's forces with Haki. Hody then tried to kill Shirahoshi with a water shot, but Jinbe nullified Hody's attack with his own water shot. Later he was seen choking a New Fishman Pirate while commenting on Hody's extortion of Surume through the threat of harming his siblings.
Suddenly, the plaza became dark. Noah, the ancient ship that Vander Decken IX tossed, reached the island and was breaking through the bubble. Just as everyone feared the bubble would not hold, they also realized that Shirahoshi was missing. She was high above the plaza and Jinbe realized that at that height, she would redirect the ship away from the plaza. Jinbe told Luffy that even though the ship is full of water, Decken is a Devil Fruit user, so there must be air somewhere and then tossed him a bubble-making coral to help him.

When Wadatsumi defeated Surume due to taking an Energy Steroid pill, he attacked Jinbe but he easily countered it by using a roundhouse kick against the giant's punch. After Wadatsumi was kicked by Sanji, Jinbe then prepared himself to fight the giant fishman together with Sanji. He continued to block Wadatsumi's attacks. When he saw Hammond's "Slave Tank" and how the New Fishman Pirates were treating their captives in the same way the World Nobles treat their slaves, he asked Robin to help free them despite the risk they may later pose to Fishman Island, and she agreed.
After Wadatsumi became almost spherical after sucking so much air in an attempt to intimidate his foes, Jinbe and Sanji began executing their unseen plan. Jinbe struck Wadatsumi with a powerful Fishman Karate attack, causing the giant to open his mouth. Wadatsumi then flew high into the sky as the air he sucked in was released. Jinbe's attack gave Sanji an opening to deal a devastating blow to Wadatsumi. Following the defeat of Wadatsumi and the leaders of the New Fishman Pirates, Jinbe and the Straw Hats looked up into the sky as Luffy tried to destroy Noah. When the Sea Kings appeared and stopped Noah from falling, saving the ship and the island at the same time, everyone on Fishman Island celebrated.

During the aftermath, Jinbe kept the formerly captive humans and the subordinates of the New Fishman Pirates in the plaza. The pirates of both factions begged Jinbe to allow them to leave, but Jinbe stated that Neptune would decide their fates and threatened to strike down anyone who tried to escape. Due to his overexertion, Luffy had lost a lot of blood and needed a transfusion, a type no one else on his crew has. Jinbe volunteered to be Luffy's donor since, as a pirate, the law that forbids blood donations to humans did not matter to him. During the transfusion, Luffy recovered and asked Jinbe to join his crew.
He reluctantly turned down Luffy's invitation, saying that he had unfinished business to take care of. However, he stated that once it is dealt with, he would come to Luffy's side and, should Luffy still feel the same way, would like to be asked to join once more. Jinbe then joined in on the banquet at the Ryugu Palace in the Straw Hats' honor.
During the festivities, Jinbe spoke to the Straw Hats in private and informed them of the Marines' movements during the timeskip such as how Sengoku retired and how his successor was decided between Aokiji and Akainu after an epic duel between the two admirals which ended in Akainu's victory. He also informed them of the Blackbeard Pirates gaining enough notoriety for Blackbeard himself to take the vacant spot of the Yonko, along with the rumors that the Blackbeard Pirates are out stealing powers from other Devil Fruit users. He urged Luffy to be careful, as his past connections with Blackbeard and garnered notoriety might tempt the latter to target him yet again, only to realize that the boy was eating to his heart's content. The other Straw Hats said that it's fine that they at least got the message, to which Jinbe sympathized at the work they have got cut out for themselves. Later, along with the Neptune Royal Family and the Neptune Army, he looked upon the New Fishman Pirates leaders in their jail cell and how they have become old due to the Energy Steroids that they stole and consumed in excess.
Afterwards, Jinbe had a private talk with Neptune over the status of the Sun Pirates under Big Mom's jurisdiction. Jinbe stated that, despite her unreasonable demeanor, they have been pretty much able to do as they pleased and admitted that serving under a Yonko served as great protection for his crew. Neptune noted it was because of Jinbe doing this that the island was kept safe after Whitebeard's death through the name of Big Mom, despite Jinbe stating that he and his crew should be doing the protecting. Jinbe stated that he was thinking of cutting ties with Big Mom due to Luffy's invitation to join the Straw Hat Pirates, but he worried that her anger would spill to Fishman Island. Neptune stated that Jinbe took on too much responsibility and that they should be able to defend themselves, for aside from the 70,000 new recruits of the Fishman District, Neptune stated he would seek to borrow the Straw Hats' flag for protection, to which Jinbe happily concurred. He was later present and shocked along with the crew and Neptune when Luffy declared that he would challenge Big Mom to a fight. Jinbe noted that now he really has to leave Big Mom before things get worse and told the crew not to irritate her anymore than they already have.
Jinbe and the other Fishman Island citizens soon bid farewell to the Straw Hats. Jinbe asserted with a nod on how he would meet up with them again someday. When a child requested a straw hat of his own to play "Hero", Jinbe stated that he would arrange for a trading ship to head for the surface and stock up on a supply of "hero hats".
Dressrosa Saga

Soon after Caribou started attempting a second mermaid kidnapping spree, Jinbe stopped him by punching him in the face.[49] He then placed the felon into a barrel and took him away from Fishman Island while riding a coated boat to the surface.[50] Sometime after leaving Fishman Island, they met Coribou and the rest of the Caribou Pirates.[51] Jinbe then stepped out of the boat and pulled it far away from the Caribou Pirates' ship.[52] He and Caribou later reached the surface at the ruined G-5 Marine Base.[53] Jinbe then quickly departed, leaving Caribou in the hands of Commodore Yarisugi, who soon began thinking of several sadistic ideas on what to do with the pirate.[54]
Solo Journey of Jinbe, Knight of the Sea

Later, when Jinbe went on a journey to search for his friends, he encountered a lost Sea Kitten while travelling underwater.[55] Afterwards, Jinbe encountered an ocean dog police officer, who then decided to help the Sea Kitten.[56] When they arrived at the Sea Kitten's home, they found nothing there but the ocean dog's house, which was turned over.[57] Jinbe and the Sea Kitten then saw a sinking ship.[58] Jinbe then saved the sailors by raising the ship to the surface, gaining their gratitude.[59] He was then surprised when he read the news concerning Luffy and Law's alliance and Doflamingo's supposed resignation from the Shichibukai.[60] From the newspaper, Jinbe also learned that the Sea Monsters went on a rampage at a port town.[61] Jinbe and the Sea Kitten later traveled to the port town and discovered the Sea Kitten's home among the ruins.[62]
After disembarking, Jinbe heard the story from the locals.[63] Jinbe was then led to a sea shrine with no offerings on it.[64] Once he returned to the port town, he saw the ocean dog and its home being thrown onto the ruins.[65] He then pursued a mysterious individual that retreated to the ocean floor.[66] There, Jinbe discovered a large pile of offerings[67] and encountered an old foe, Wadatsumi.[68] After hearing from his side of the story, Jinbe gives him a scolding.[69] Jinbe then spoke to the Sea Monsters that rampaged at the port town to clear up a misunderstanding.[70] He was present when Wadatsumi and the Sea Monsters apologized to the towns people and the Sea Kitten reunited with its parent.[71]

Soon after, the locals showed Jinbe a poneglyph that was hidden among the ruins.[72] Jinbe was then seen looking at the Sea Kings, who are now acting as ships for the locals to make up for breaking theirs.[73] Having made peace with each other, the locals, Sea Monsters, Wadatsumi, and Jinbe had a feast together.[74] On the next day, Wadatsumi asked Jinbe if he can come along with him.[75] After bidding the townspeople and the Sea Monsters farewell, Jinbe left with Wadatsumi,[76] taking the poneglyph with them.

Jinbe later met with his crew to discuss un-affiliating with Big Mom and joining Luffy's crew. The Sun Pirates agreed and supported his decision. When Jinbe asked Aladine's wife, Charlotte Praline, about the possibility of incurring Big Mom's wrath if he leaves her crew, she stated that Jinbe would not be the first person who tried to leave and warned him that not a single soul brave enough to utter such words has lived to see another day.[77] Aladine later watched Luffy's group from under the sea, and contacted Jinbe for further orders.[78]

Upon arriving to Whole Cake Island, Jinbe delivered his poneglyph to Big Mom.[79] Later while she was throwing a tantrum in Sweet City due to her craving for croquemboche, Jinbe stopped her by giving her the sweets she desired. After she calmed down, Big Mom thanked Jinbe for the poneglyph he gave her. Jinbe then wished to discuss something important with her and Big Mom wondered with a frightening expression if Jinbe intended to sever their alliance.[80] Jinbe later explained to Big Mom about his decision to leave her crew. Big Mom was unconcerned about his reasons but was greatly displeased. She then demanded Jinbe to give up something in return and as such, brought out a consequence roulette wheel.[81]
Sometime later, a newspaper article stated that Jinbe took back his request to leave Big Mom's crew.[82]

Anime and Manga Differences
Impel Down Arc
In the manga, Minozebra is defeated by Crocodile's Sables, while in the anime he is defeated by Jinbe's Gosenmaigawara Seiken. In the manga, Minorhinoceros is defeated by Jinbe's Gosenmaigawara Seiken, while in the anime he is defeated by Crocodile's Sables.
Marineford Arc
In the anime episode 470, Jinbe had a short duel with Mihawk in the war in Marineford which was not seen happening in the manga. During the battle, Jinbe comes to Luffy's aid and challenges the swordsman. He uses his fishman karate to slow the oncoming cannon balls shot at him that Mihawk then cuts. The two then engage in a short clash, sending Jinbe flying back as Mihawk continues to pursue Luffy. Jinbe turned around for a brief moment when Whitebeard died. Jinbe's flashback of Ace and Luffy was longer. The scene where Akainu attacked Jinbe and Luffy was extended along with exchange in dialogue. Aokiji's and Kizaru's attacks on the Heart Pirates, Luffy, and Jinbe were shown in greater depth.
Post-War Arc
When the Heart Pirates arrive at Amazon Lily in the anime, they enter the harbor with the Kuja Pirates. Jinbe had to convince Elder Nyon that Law is needed to treat Luffy's wounds.
Fishman Island Arc
The anime added a scene of Jinbe in a bar stopping some human pirates from causing a scene. The scene in which Arlong was telling Jinbe that he's beating already unconscious marines is omitted in the anime. During Rear Admiral Strawberry's explanation of the Sun Pirates, which shows the silhouettes of Tiger, Jinbe, and Arlong, Jinbe's silhouette is incorrectly shown with its current appearance of 46 years, instead of its appearance 31 years, as a member of the Sun Pirates. The anime also added a scene in which a marine provoked Jinbe.
The anime shows Jinbe directly attacking Rear Admiral Strawberry. In the anime, Tiger's last flashback shows that he had to fight other fishmen to gain leadership of the Fishman District, including Jinbe and Arlong. The fight between Arlong and Jinbe is extended. In the manga, the talk between Arlong and Jinbe, about his becoming a Shichibukai happens at Impel Down, the fight between the two happens at an unknown island of the Grand Line, and the conversation between Jinbe and Aladdin on Arlong not understanding the will of Tiger happens on the ship. But in the anime, all the scenes occur at the same unknown island.
Translation and Dub Issues
His name comes from jinbei-zame (甚平鮫), which means "whale shark" in Japanese. It could also mean the type of clothing worn by Japanese during the summer, Jinbei.
Jinbe's name is sometimes spelled as Jimbei because when pronouncing it, the n of the name often sounds like a m to some. However, the fourth databook confirmed that the correct spelling is indeed Jinbe. The English versions spell his name as Jimbei. However, the official Japanese website for One Piece: Burning Blood has the name "Jimbei" on his bounty.[83]
His epithet, Kaikyō, would normally translate into "Strait" or "Channel". However since the kanji for it is written as (海侠) and not (海峡), the kyō part (侠) of it comes from (任侠), a honorific used when addressing a high ranking yakuza member, thus making his epithet a Japanese pun. Because this honorific is used for addressing high ranking yakuza members, it does not have a literal English translation. The closest translations used of the epithet that can be interpreted into English are made up based on the pun's meaning. These include "Yakuza of the Sea" and "Knight of the Sea" among others. These however are not literal translations, but titles made to convey the idea behind the original Japanese term used. In the Viz Manga and FUNimation subs, his epithet is translated as "First Son of the Sea".
