The Iron Pirate "General Franky" (鉄の海賊アイアンパイレーツ「フランキー将軍」, Aian Pairētsu "Furankī Shōgun"?) is the newest addition to the Battle Franky line, numbered BF-38.[1]

Appearance[]

General Franky is a giant robot modeled after Franky. It is made by "docking" the Kurosai FR-U IV and the Brachio Tank V. Though several times the size of the average person, it is still smaller than Chopper in his Monster Point, and a good deal smaller than the average giants. It is built out of Wapometal. It bears the BF-38 on its left collar and a modified Straw Hat jolly roger in the middle of its chest.

The head, legs, and torso are made up mainly of the Brachio Tank V, while the arms are mainly the Kurosai FR-U IV. Its overall appearance resembles that of post-timeskip Franky with his pre-timeskip hairstyle, with a large collar and the Brachio Tank's caterpillar treads on its back.

As a gag, any time it makes an appearance, male characters tend to look on in awe and exclaim how cool it is, while the female characters will simply give it a blank and aloof stare. The three exceptions were Sanji, Roronoa Zoro, and Trafalgar Law, owing to their no-nonsense attitudes. When they saw the General Franky for the first time, they simply gave it a look of irritation. Another interesting reaction is Yamato in the anime, who reacted with a look of awe and saying they couldn't believe he really exists, though Yamato did mistake the mecha for Franky due to General Franky appearing on Franky's second wanted poster at the time which Yamato is shown looking at in a flashback.[3]

Abilities and Powers[]

General Franky is designed and built by Franky after studying the many blueprints left behind in Karakuri Island by Vegapunk. A one-person weapon/vehicle, Franky himself pilots it inside a control room in the chest and operates it from there. It is equipped with a giant "marauder's" sword named Franken (フラン剣, Furanken?, literally meaning "Fran Sword"). However, Franky is rather inept at using a sword, so the attacks are seemingly ineffective, and it appears most of its projectile armaments are purely from Franky himself (although, in Film Z, Franky uses Franken to successfully cut down a Shiro Kuma in a single swoop). Franky can use the robot's giant fists to deliver extremely powerful punches,[4] enough to easily blow away multiple fish-men, a species noted to have ten times the strength of regular humans without much effort. It also has a drill on its head, but seemingly only for aesthetic purposes.[1]

In its first appearance, the robot pretty much did nothing, since most of its attacks came from Franky himself when he opened the cockpit, to the point that Robin even questioned if Franky really needed it for the fight.[5] This was mostly a gag, however, as it was shown in the fight with Baby 5 and Buffalo that it is indeed truly a force to be reckoned with, having been installed with advanced and powerful artillery with destructive power that is significantly greater than the already powerful weapons that Franky installed in his cyborg body, and its General Body (将軍の体ジェネラルボディ, Jeneraru Bodi?) is also extremely resilient to damage, as shown when most of Baby 5's explosive attacks were not powerful enough to significantly harm it,[6][7] despite her claim that even a Pacifista would not resist her techniques.[8] Even a point-blank missile explosion was only able to knock it over, without sustaining any damage, and it took a combination attack from Baby 5 and Buffalo to be able to pierce its hide.[7]

Magnumceratops

General Franky is heavily damaged by Sasaki's techniques, with its left shoulder being completely destroyed.

So far, Sasaki of the Beasts Pirates is the only known individual to have been able to cause significant destruction to the General's components.

The General Franky is also either airtight or possesses an advanced air filtering system, as it stood in the middle of a huge cloud of Caesar Clown's Shinokuni gas without Franky himself being poisoned.[9] From the Wano Country Arc onwards, the robot becomes far more expressive.

Techniques[]

  • General Omomi (将軍ジェネラルおもみ, Jeneraru Omomi?, literally meaning "General Weight"): Franky falls on the enemy, crushing them with the weight of the robot. This was first used against some of the New Fish-Man Pirates.[1] This is called General Weight in the VIZ manga and Funimation sub.
  • General Left (将軍の左ジェネラル・レフト, Jeneraru Refuto?): Franky shoots bullets from the General Franky's arm. It is very similar to Weapons Left, but much more powerful. In the anime, the bullets come from four gun barrels underneath the circular panel on the hand which opens up like a hatch. It was used for the first time against Buffalo and Baby 5 on Punk Hazard.[10]
  • General Daijobu (将軍ジェネラル大丈夫, Jeneraru Daijōbu"?, literally meaning "General OK"): A gag technique, after withstanding a barrage of attacks, Franky states that he's "OK". This was first used against Baby 5 and Buffalo.[11] In the VIZ manga this is called General Just Fine and in the Funimation subs, this is called General I'm-Okay and in the dubs it is known as General A-OK.
  • General Shield (将軍の盾ジェネラル・シールド, Jeneraru Shīrudo?): Franky detaches the upper portion of his shoulder with a star on it and uses it as a shield. It is not very useful as a defense since the shield is too tiny for the robot's body, but the shield can also be used as a projectile. This was first used against Baby 5 and Buffalo.[11]
    • General Shield Boomerang (将軍の盾ジェネラル・シールド ブーメラン, Jeneraru Shīrudo Būmeran"?): Franky throws his shield at the enemy. It was easily destroyed by Buffalo and Baby 5 with their combination attack. This was first used against Baby 5 and Buffalo.[12]
General Cannon

General Cannon.

  • General Cannon (将軍砲ジェネラル・キャノン, Jeneraru Kyanon?): Franky brings the arms of General Franky together as if he were charging a Coup de Vent or a Franky Radical Beam, then fills its arms with air and fires a giant blast of compressed air towards the target. Franky described this attack as an on-land version of the Thousand Sunny's Gaon Cannon. It was first used against Baby 5 and Buffalo, where it dealt heavy damage to them and the ice mountains of Punk Hazard over a large area.[13] In the anime, the blast comes from a T-shaped pipe that extends out of a hatch in General Franky's right hand and another pipe from the left hand that connect together. This was seemingly confirmed to be canon in the fight against Sasaki, where the same set of pipes can be briefly seen. It retains its name in the VIZ and Funimation translations.
  • General Launcher (将軍ジェネラルランチャー, Jeneraru Ranchā?): After removing the General Shields, Franky fires a non-stop barrage of explosive bullets at his opponents from the General Franky's shoulders. It was used against Sasaki and his Armored Division where it pushed back all the heavily armored SMILE users except Sasaki.[14]
  • General Suplex (将軍ジェネラルスープレックス, Jeneraru Sūpurekkusu?): Franky grabs his opponent and performs an overhead suplex move on them, sticking their head into the ground. It was first seen used against Sasaki.[15]

Franken[]

  • General Ashimoto Dangerous (将軍ジェネラル足元あしもと危険デンジャラス, Jeneraru Ashimoto Denjarasu?, literally meaning "General Gait Hazard"): Franky has the General Franky crouch, and while holding the Franken at knee level, he causes the robot's torso to rapidly and continuously rotate. This causes a fan like-rotation of the blade aimed at the legs, which forces the foes to jump up to dodge it. While they are in the air, he shoots them with his own shoulder cannons. This was first used against some of the New Fish-Man Pirates.[1] This is called General Watch-Your-Step in the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations.
  • Shori no V-Flash (勝利のVブイフラッシュ, Shōri no Bui Furasshu?): After lighting up Franken, General Franky holds the sword overhead in both hands and then slashes the opponent's chest with a quick, v-shaped swing. It was first used against Sasaki.[16] This is called V-For-Victory Flash in the VIZ manga and Funimation adaptations.

Improvised Techniques[]

These techniques are used by Franky popping out of the General Franky briefly and attacking with the weapons of his own cyborg body instead of using those from the General Franky itself. Despite being considered gag techniques, they were proven to be quite effective.

  • Franky Cannon (フランキー大砲キャノン, Furankī Kyanon?): After Franky uses General Franky's Franken to perform General Ashimoto Dangerous and makes his opponents jump, Franky himself pops out of the cavity in the chest and shoots down the enemies in mid-jump.[1]
  • Franky Fireball (フランキーファイヤーボール, Furankī Faiyābōru?): Franky shoots a fireball from his mouth out of the chest cavity of the robot. This was first seen used against Ikaros Much.[17]

The following events are Non-Canon and therefore not considered part of the Canon story.

Black General Franky[]

Black Franky Shogun

The Black General Franky.

In One Piece: Unlimited World Red, the Black General Franky (ブラックフランキー将軍, Burakku Furankī Shōgun?) made its debut, a black and evil counterpart of the General Franky, which appears on Fish-Man Island to fight against the Straw Hat Pirates. It shares the attacks with the original General Franky.

Concludes non-canon section.

Trivia[]

Cyborg Franky's Wanted Poster

General Franky on Franky's wanted poster

  • In Wake Up, the 17th One Piece opening, the General Franky is incorrectly portrayed being of equal size to a giant, when in fact it is even shorter than Chopper's Monster Point. General Franky’s height is 13 meters tall, which would be highly rare for John Giant to be of equal size.[2]
  • So far, each time Franky has been inside the General Franky, his hair has reverted to his original hair style before the time skip. The only exception has been in the non-canon One Piece Film: Z, where Franky entered the robot sporting his post-time skip hair style.
  • A picture of General Franky was used on Franky's second Wanted Poster.
  • The General Shield Boomerang is similar to Captain America's signature shield from Marvel Comics.
  • General Franky's birthday is January 8.[2]
