Like other countries, One Piece is popular in Turkey.

Anime[]

In Turkey, One Piece first aired on Star TV under the name "Lastik Çocuk" (Rubber Boy) in year 2004. Luffy was called "Lafi" and the attacks were also translated. While there was censorship on lines that would be considered completely unacceptable by Turkish culture, such as Sanji's womanizing and Zoro's excessive drinking, there were no visual censorships, and the censorship was not as extreme as the Arabic version. It aired only for 52 episodes, because of Sanji's and Smoker's cigarettes and the violence in the series, which led to the anime being banned by RTÜK (Radio and Television Supreme Council). Despite the ban, Turkish fans continue to watch the show using fansubs.

Changes[]

  • Luffy is "Lastik Çocuk Lafi (Rubber Boy Laffy)".
  • Roronoa Zoro is "Zoro Rorono".
  • Shanks is "Kızıl Saçlı Şenks (Shanks Red Hair)".
  • Sanji is "Şanji (Shanji)".
  • Buggy is "Soytarı Kral Bagi (Jester King Buggy)".
  • Morgan is called "Baltacı Morgın (Morgan the Lumberjack)"
  • Gol D. Roger is translated as "Altın Racır (Golden Roger)".
  • Gomu gomu no... attacks are translated as "Lastik lastik (Rubber-rubber)".
  • The Golden Age of Pirates is translated as "the great age of travels".
  • Characters are seen using traditional Muslim expressions such as "Allah" and "inshallah".

Manga[]

After the release of the first volume, publishers decided not to release the second volume until the first four volumes were ready for release. Releases were put on a hiatus for nearly eight months because of a problem with too many explanations due to Turkish culture being different from Japanese. Each page was filled with a lot of explanations which confused the readers.

Viz Media asked the publishers to translate sound effects to Turkish, instead of giving explanations. Since those kinds of sound effects are not common in Turkish, they had to create those sound effects from scratch, which took a long time. As of February 2024, all volumes up to Volume 51 have been published in Turkish by Gerekli Şeyler. Due to the Turkish economic crisis manga sales have gone down since less people could afford them, and the translation process was slowed down.
