Cloning is the process of perfectly duplicating a living organism's body.[2]

Overview[]

By duplicating a subject's Lineage Factor, it is possible to create a living duplicate of the specific organism. The clone's body will be completely identical to that of the original, but the clone will have a soul of their own as well as volition and responsibility over their own actions.[3]

Clones can also be modified, resulting in physical deviations from the original genetic template. One such example of this is the Seraphim; they are clones of the former members of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, however, they have the attributes of the Lunarian tribe and they have been bestowed with Artificial Devil Fruit powers via Green Blood.

Cloning is deemed by the World Government as too dangerous for anyone else to have perform, have access to, or even know about, and their agents take hard action should they find evidence of cloning activity.[3] Hypocritically, the World Government uses cloning to create the Pacifista, human weapons built in the mold of the former Warlord Bartholomew Kuma.[4]

Usage[]

The MADS research laboratory for peace was the first institute to successfully accomplish human cloning. Its director, Dr. Vegapunk, considered this achievement a step towards world peace.[5]

Germa 66[]

Currently, the Germa Kingdom is one of the two known places to use cloning technology. Germa 66, the kingdom's military force, is entirely comprised of clones of the kingdom's strongest soldiers, called Clone Soldiers (複製クローン, Kurōn Hei?). These clones are grown in large tanks resembling bottles, and grow at roughly four times the rate of a normal person, gaining the bodies of 20-year-olds in only five years.[3] It is unknown who, if anyone, they are cloned copies of.

Germa produces at least six different known types of clones:

Clone Soldier Types

The Clone Soldier types.

  • Type-WB (Woman Balance) - a slim body and light brown hair. The only female clone.
  • Type-MB (Man Balance) - average body size and black hair.
  • Type-MR (Man Reach) - a tall figure and black hair.
  • Type-MH (Man Heavy) - a large body and black hair. In Episode 793, one was seen sparring against an MSP and he was shown to have great endurance.
  • Type-MST (Man Strong) - a muscular body and black hair.
  • Type-MSP (Man Speed) - a short body and black hair. In Episode 793, one was seen sparring against an MH and he was shown to have great speed.

During battle, they wear the standard Germa 66 uniforms. During training and free time, they wear light grey, short sleeve shirts and dark pants. WB wear lilac shirts instead of grey. They all also wear sunglasses instead of goggles, presumably the same they had in their cloning tubes.[6]

World Government[]

Pacifista Project

The Pacifista Project

The World Government is the second organization to use cloning. In their case, they further modified the clones into powerful cyborgs known as Pacifista. The original Pacifista are clones of former Warlord, Bartholomew Kuma, who was forced to take part in the project. Dr. Vegapunk's cloning process is more advance than the one used by the Germa Kingdom, as he was to complete at least 20 Pacifistas within two years after meeting Kuma.[7]

The World Government SSG later commissioned a new breed of clones known as Seraphim, who resemble childhood versions of the former Seven Warlords, but with Lunarian characteristics and Artificial Devil Fruit powers.

Personality[]

The first successful clone, Stussy, has a personality and free will of her own, ranging from being polite in public to sadistic in battle. Nevertheless, she is loyal to her creator, Dr. Vegapunk.[5]

The clones of Germa 66 are all extremely loyal to their commanders, the Vinsmoke Family, and will lay down their lives for them on command.[8] However, none of them seem to know their origins.[3] They are able to express some emotions as they were shown mourning at Sanji's fake funeral,[9] excited to see Sanji and Judge's fight,[8] and celebrating the morning of Sanji and Pudding's wedding day.[10]

Unlike the clones created by Germa 66, the Pacifista are simply mindless weapons that will carry out their orders with no regard for themselves.

The Seraphim act like weapons as well, carrying out any orders given by a person whose orders they are programmed to follow. However, they are not mindless and do have personality traits of their own. Furthermore, the clones may inherit any personality traits from their genetic source, as S-Snake shares the same romantic feelings for Monkey D. Luffy as her progenitor does.[11]

Abilities and Powers[]

A clones combat prowess begins with its genetic makeup. By modifying their body types, they can specialize in different fighting attributes: MHs have considerable endurance and defiance, MSTs are muscular and strong, and MSPs are fast.[6] Their combat capabilities can be further enhanced by the introduction of different racial traits, Artificial Devil Fruit powers, and cyborg modifications.

Spending most of their days training, the clone soldiers of Germa are highly proficient in several fighting styles like hand-to-hand combat and swordsmanship.[12] They used rifles while fighting the war at Broc Coli Island.[13] However, even with all their training, they are no match for the modified Vinsmoke children, as they were defeated by them.[14]

History[]

Soldier Stock Depot

Germa Kingdom's cloning chamber.

Over 21 years ago, Vegapunk, Vinsmoke Judge, and some other scientists discovered the human lineage factor, which enabled them to manipulate the genetics of living organisms and create clones of them.[3] Their first successful experiment was Subject No. 1, Stussy, a clone of Miss Buckingham Stussy.[5] The World Government discovered this research and drove the group apart, arresting Vegapunk in the process. Judge retreated to Germa and continued the cloning research, eventually succeeding in creating clones to form Germa 66.

Ironically, the World Government later tasked Vegapunk, whom they had arrested previously for doing research on cloning, to develop and create the Seraphim, genetic clones of the previous Seven Warlords of the Sea, to serve under the World Government military.[15][16]

Charlotte Linlin desires this technology very much, and she feigned a political alliance with the Vinsmoke Family in order to steal it from them.[17]

Trivia[]

  • The prohibition of human cloning mirrors reality, where the practice is banned in more than 70 countries.
  • Germa 66's use of clones as soldiers for their army, and their use of growth acceleration for them, is very similar to that of the Clone troopers of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
  • The clones within the Germa Kingdom's preservation tanks appeared to be wearing shades despite not being clothed.
  • In the non-canon Ice Hunter Arc, Monkey D. Luffy incorrectly believed that the identical twins Campacino and Brindo are clones, despite being repeatedly told otherwise.[18]
