The Roger Pirates were the pirate crew of the late Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. They were, and still are, the only known crew to ever reach Laugh Tale, the end of the New World in the Grand Line. They encountered Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp on several occasions[3] and were strong rivals to the Whitebeard Pirates.[4]

This was the crew that traveled around the Grand Line together, and the things they did were part of legend. They made it as far as Skypiea and the end of the Grand Line, Laugh Tale, on their ship, the Oro Jackson. Roger was the most famous figure of his era, while the names of his first mate, Silvers Rayleigh, and rival Edward Newgate were widely known and famed as well.

The first introduction to their crew comes from Buggy, who recalls his days with Shanks as apprentices in their crew.[1] Their captain, Roger, is the first character introduced in the series.[5]

Jolly Roger[]

The Roger Pirates' Jolly Roger is a skull with a long, curly mustache resembling Gol D. Roger's.

Crew Strength[]

Roger Pirates Defeat a Group of Marines

The Roger Pirates easily defeat a group of Marines.

As their captain was known as the "King of the Pirates", they were one of the strongest crews of their time, as well as one of the most powerful crews in history. As evidenced primarily by the fact that they have been the only crew to conquer the Grand Line and reach the final island, Laugh Tale, by finding all four Road Poneglyphs. They were able to understand the Poneglyphs after recruiting Kozuki Oden, and the members of the crew became part of the very few people to discover the true history of the world, the events of the Void Century, and the meaning of the initial D.[6] Because of their abilities and accomplishments, Roger was given the highest known bounty in history by the World Government,[7] with other members of the crew also becoming heavily wanted men whose bounties are still active 25 years after the crew's dissolution.[8]

In addition to their great accomplishments, the Roger Pirates were immensely powerful in battle. This was best shown when they fought the Whitebeard Pirates, another immensely powerful crew, to a draw for four days. Roger, despite being plagued by his terminal illness, clashed evenly with Whitebeard, who was reputed as the "Strongest Man in the World" and was in his prime.[9] Right before battling the Whitebeard Pirates, the Roger Pirates had easily defeated a battalion of Marines, with Roger saying they should have brought Admiral Sengoku or Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp if they wanted to make it fun.[10] The Roger Pirates also clashed against the powerful Golden Lion Pirates in the Battle of Edd War; despite commandeering only one ship against the Golden Lion Pirates' massive fleet, the Roger Pirates fought to a draw with the help of a storm and caused significant damage to the fleet.[11] So far, only three men are considered to have been formidable rivals to Roger: Whitebeard,[12] Garp,[13] and the legendary pirate Rocks D. Xebec.[14]

Roger demonstrated tremendous mastery over Haoshoku Haki and Busoshoku Haki,[9] while Rayleigh has been shown to possess all three types.[15] Even after being retired from piracy for 23 years, Rayleigh was able to clash evenly with Marine Admiral and Logia user Kizaru;[16] Kizaru stated that the Marines would need to make more preparations than just sending him, some Pacifista, and a Marine battalion to capture the Dark King.[8] In addition to being able to read the Poneglyphs, Kozuki Oden was an extremely powerful samurai who was the first person to seriously injure the powerful pirate Kaidou, who would go on to become known as the world's "Strongest Creature".[17] Shanks is extremely skilled at using all three types of Haki and is one of the strongest swordsmen in the world. He would later become recognized as one of the Four Emperors, the four most powerful pirate captains.[14] Notably, the only member of the Roger Pirates known to have consumed a Devil Fruit is Buggy, an apprentice who was one of the weakest members of the crew.[18] Although he is still not a powerful pirate compared to others in the Grand Line, Buggy has been able to garner significant attention and respect just by being part of the Roger Pirates;[19] this enabled him to recruit hundreds of dangerous Impel Down escapees to his crew and receive an invitation to join the Seven Warlords of the Sea.[20] Later, Buggy too would become one of the Four Emperors.[21] However, this is largely due to the many misconceptions made by the Marines.

Ships[]

Stolen Boat[]

At the start of their journey, Roger and Rayleigh used a boat that Rayleigh stole as his house had burned down. Roger described the ship as small but able to endure storms if handled correctly.[22]

Oro Jackson[]

The Oro Jackson.

The Roger Pirates' ship, the Oro Jackson, was constructed by the most skilled shipwright of the era, Tom. It was built from wood taken from the Treasure Tree Adam, which is valued at about Beli200,000,000. When fighting Shiki, the ship had a large cannon in the front surrounded by a pair of mermaids. This cannon was powerful enough to destroy an entire ship.

The construction of this ship led Tom to become a criminal, since the ship was affiliated with the Pirate King.

History[]

Biography[]

Roger Pirates Arrive At God Valley

The Roger Pirates arrive on God Valley.

The Roger Pirates were formed over 52 years ago when a young Gol D. Roger asked Silvers Rayleigh to join him.[23][24] The Roger Pirates began sailing the Grand Line, and 39 years before the present day they reached Lodestar Island, the last island that the Log Pose pointed to. However, Roger knew that there was an island beyond it, having stolen the message of Charlotte Linlin's Road Poneglyph.[25][26] A year later, Roger would team up with the Marine Monkey D. Garp to defeat the notorious pirate Rocks D. Xebec and his crew, the Rocks Pirates.[14]

The following events are Non-Canon and therefore not considered part of the Canon story.

At some point, the crew encountered the Red Arrows Pirates, though it is unknown how the meeting went or how the relationship between the crews was.[27]

Roger vs Shiki

The Roger Pirates battle Shiki.

Ten years later, Roger discovered that he had an incurable and fatal disease and decided to lead his crew on a final voyage across the Grand Line. He recruited Crocus from Reverse Mountain to keep him alive as long as possible.[28] A year later, the Roger Pirates fought the Golden Lion Pirates in the Battle of Edd War; the battle was declared a draw with the Golden Lion Pirates taking significant damage.[11]

Roger Pirates While Partying

The crew celebrates Oden's induction

One year after that on an island in Paradise, the Roger Pirates crossed paths with the Whitebeard Pirates and battled them for four days. After the battle, Roger asked Whitebeard to allow Kozuki Oden to join his crew, as Oden was a member of the Kozuki Family who could read the Poneglyphs and so could help them get to the final island. Whitebeard reluctantly agreed as Oden himself had wished to join Roger, and Oden and his family joined the Roger Pirates as well as Oden's retainers Inuarashi and Nekomamushi, who came on as stowaways.

After adventuring in Skypiea,[29] the Roger Pirates headed to Fish-Man Island, where they found the second Road Poneglyph. Oden, Inuarashi, and Nekomamushi revealed that the final two Road Poneglyphs were in their home countries of Wano and Zou, and the Roger Pirates successfully found them there. Inuarashi, Nekomamushi, and Oden's family were left behind on Wano due to Oden's wife Kozuki Toki falling ill, but Oden continued sailing with the crew.

Roger's Departure

Roger departs from the crew.

25 years ago, the Roger Pirates charted the location of the final island using the Road Poneglyphs and made landfall there, with Shanks and Buggy staying behind on another island due to the latter falling ill. On the final island, they found a treasure left behind 800 years ago, by Joy Boy and learned the truth behind the Void Century, Ancient Weapons, and the meaning of the D. Roger decided to name the final island Laugh Tale.[6] After returning from Laugh Tale, Roger disbanded the crew and set off on his own. The crew then took Oden back to Wano, where he intended to open the country's borders to start the new era that Joy Boy wanted, and eventually the rest of the crew went their separate ways.[30]

Legacy[]

After the Roger Pirates disbanded, their captain turned himself in to the Marines, and they chose to execute him in his birthplace of Loguetown 24 years ago.[28] But right before his death, Roger shouted out his famous final words to all the pirates present, stating that his legendary treasure will be theirs if they find it, thus beginning the Great Pirate Era. Because of their connection to Roger, all the former members of the Roger Pirates were hunted down relentlessly by the World Government.

Roger's former apprentices, Shanks and Buggy were present at his execution, and afterwards they split up to form their own crews, the Red Hair Pirates and the Buggy Pirates respectively.[11] 12 years after Roger's death, Shanks would end up inspiring a young boy named Monkey D. Luffy to become an infamous pirate. 6 years later, Shanks would become recognized as one of the Four Emperors.[14] Buggy and his crew were active in the East Blue until two years before the present, when they entered the Grand Line and Buggy became one of the Seven Warlord of the Sea due in large part to his history with Roger.[20] After the system's dissolution, Buggy would then become one of the Four Emperors alongside Shanks (in truth, he is currently serving under Crocodile and Dracule Mihawk, who are using him as a figurehead).

Rayleigh retired from piracy and currently works as a ship coater on the Sabaody Archipelago, though goes on frequent excursions.[31] Crocus returned to Reverse Mountain to take care of Laboon.[28] Oden returned to Wano to assume his role as shogun and open the country's borders, but was killed five years after the crew's disbandment, as his quest to open Wano's borders was met with opposition from Wano's false shogun, Kurozumi Orochi and the Emperor, Kaidou.[32] The whereabouts and statuses of the other Roger Pirates are unknown. The bounties for the crew are still active, with the World Government being unwilling to lift them before the members die.[8]

Trivia[]

  • The Roger Pirates had a theme of its senior members having names based off of precious metals: Gol D. Roger's name is based on gold, Silvers Rayleigh's is based on silver, and Scopper Gaban's is based on copper.
  • The first time the Jolly Roger is introduced is in Chapter 19 which shows it different than the one that it is today. In that chapter it is just a simple skull with crossbones.
  • The Roger Pirates had at least four Haoshoku Haki users, the most of any pirate crew to date.
    • Douglas Bullet, who was a non-canon member of the crew, also possesses this ability.
  • Despite being a veteran pirate crew and having clashed with powerful Devil Fruit users like the Whitebeard Pirates, the crew was skeptical about Devil Fruits during Buggy's flashback.
  • Two former members of the crew, Shanks and Buggy, would later go on to become part of the Four Emperors. This makes the crew one of two to hold multiple future Emperors, the other being the Rocks Pirates, which had three future Emperors in its ranks.
