Dragon Ball
From One Piece Encyclopedia
Dragon Ball (ドラゴンボール, Doragon Bōru) is a Japanese manga by Akira Toriyama, serialized in the weekly anthology magazine, Weekly Shonen Jump, from 1984 to 1995 and originally collected into 42 individual books called tankōbon. In 2004, the manga was re-released in a 34 volume collection (called kanzenban) which included a slightly rewritten ending, all new original covers, and original color artwork from its Weekly Jump run.
Eiichiro Oda stated it was his favorite manga and holds it in high-esteem. He did a one shot crossover together with Akira Toriyama called Cross Epoch.
[edit] Dragon Ball references in One Piece
- In Skypiea the dial-powered Wavers look like a one-wheeled motorcycle Lunch (in her blonde form) used when robbing a train (Dragon Ball episode 15). In the same scene she used a bazooka that looked like Burn Bazooka, the main weapon of Wiper, one of the main characters of Skypiea arc.
- The scene of Luffy meeting his grandpa Garp during Post-Enies Lobby arc resembles somewhat the scene of Goku meeting his grandpa Gohan during Fortuneteller Baba Saga. Luffy is just as weak compared to his grandfather as Goku was compared to his. Besides, Garp always wears a dog mask, while Gohan wore a kitsune(fox) mask during his fight with Goku.
- In One Piece Movie 3: Chopper's Kingdom on the Island of Strange Animals the main villain of the movie, Count Butler, turns into a creature that looks like a horned Golden Oozaru and fights in a similar fashion.
- In One Piece Movie 5: Curse of the Sacred Sword, Luffy and Usopp are travelling through a network of underground tunnels full of traps similar to those of Emperor Pilaf (huge rolling boulders, etc).
- In One Piece Movie 5: Curse of the Sacred Sword, Seven Stars Sword was sealed with three "precious jems" that look like purple Dragon Balls without stars, they react by glowing in the same way. And the name: "Seven Stars" Sword is to easy to relate.
- The Slavery trade business can be seen as variation of Freiza's World Trade Organization.
- Luffy's gear's are somewhat similar to the super saiyan tranformation's, gear 3 being extremly similar to ultra saiyan and gear 2 being somewhat similar to ssj3
