"Doberman" has been featured, meaning it was chosen as an article of interest.

Vice Admiral Doberman[3] is a veteran Marine officer. He was one of the five Vice Admirals who led the Buster Call against Enies Lobby,[1] and also took part in the Summit War of Marineford.[4] Two years later, he is one of the nine vice admirals taking part in the siege of Egghead.[5]

Appearance[]

Doberman has four X-shaped scars on his face and two on his neck, a split, curling mustache and brown flowing hair, reaching down to his shoulders. He has no pupil in his left eye.

His Marine coat, draped on his shoulders like a cape, is more elaborate than the ones worn by other high-ranking officers, and the stripes across his cap are in a zig-zag pattern. Underneath his coat he sports an outfit reminiscent of those worn by naval officers in the 1600's, composed of a loose shirt with rope-like ornaments on it and suit pants.

From Doberman's first introduction, he wore a red marine coat, that is changed to a white coat in the Summit War of Marineford in the anime.

When Doberman first joined the marines, his jaw was less angular and his hair was shorter. He also still had both pupils, and only had a single X-shaped scar, under his left eye.

Personality[]

Doberman firmly believes in Absolute Justice: he ordered the Marines to abandon injured soldiers and was willing to show Whitebeard's and Ace's heads as trophies to the world. He also claimed that Luffy was not to leave Marineford alive, for being Dragon's son. He was perceptive enough to see through Spandam's lie about Robin, but Doberman did nothing to stop the attack on her. When questioning Saint Saturn about the possibility of sacrificing every soldier on Egghead for their war against Vegapunk and the Straw Hat Pirates, Doberman did not argue with Saturn's view on how humans are no different than insects that can repopulate even if many are killed, showing a submissive side towards the Five Elders.

He did, however, show affection for those he respected in Film Z as shown when he shed a tear when he and his fellow Marines were forced to kill their former instructor, Zephyr.

Abilities and Powers[]

As a vice admiral, Doberman is capable of commanding a Buster Call alongside four other vice admirals. He also has command over lower-ranking subordinates.

Doberman has a strong will as he was able to resist Luffy's Haoshoku Haki. He also survived the entire Summit War of Marineford without receiving any visible injuries.[4]

Weapons[]

During the Marineford Arc, he was seen carrying around a katana, wielding it in his left hand, which may suggest that he's left-handed or ambidextrous. He was seen fighting on par with McGuy, one of Whitebeard's allies, in the anime.

Haki[]

Further information: Haki

It was stated that all vice admirals possess Haki,[6] so Doberman can also use the ability.

History[]

Water 7 Saga[]

Enies Lobby Arc[]

Vice Admiral Doberman was present at the Enies Lobby Buster Call.[1] There he told his men about Rob Lucci's past. He possessed a firm belief that as long as Lucci was there to assist in the escorting of Nico Robin, there was no need for the Marines to act.[7]

He also apparently saw through Spandam's deceit, that Admiral Aokiji ordered him to attack Robin, but did nothing against it.

Summit War Saga[]

Marineford Arc[]

During the Summit War of Marineford, Doberman sliced up cannon fire and prepared to battle against the division commanders of the Whitebeard Pirates. Doberman was still standing alongside Momonga and other vice admirals when Whitebeard attacked the Marines after reaching the plaza. He is later seen surprised at the arrival of Little Oars Jr. stating that the giant is quite a bit bigger than an average giant.

When Luffy unknowingly uses Haki, Doberman warns his subordinates to treat him as a real menace, not just as a rookie. Doberman knows Luffy is Dragon's son, and sees him as a sure threat for the future. When he saw a fellow Marine helping out an injured comrade after Trafalgar Law's arrival, he immediately ordered the Marine to forget the wounded and continue on with the battle against the retreating pirates, showing no pity or remorse.

Later Shanks arrived and the fighting comes to a halt. When Shanks announced that he would be taking the bodies of Ace and Whitebeard, Doberman protested saying that the Marines' victory will not be complete until they hold their heads high for the world to see. However, Doberman was shocked to see that Sengoku agreed with Shanks. He stood down when the war ended.

Final Saga[]

Egghead Arc[]

Doberman and eight other Vice Admirals led a fleet of Marines to surround Egghead. He reported to Jaygarcia Saturn that CP0 had yet to confirm their mission complete, and based on the status of the Frontier Dome and Sentomaru's actions, the Straw Hat Pirates, CP0, Seraphim, Vegapunk and his satellites were inside the Labophase, and the captured Cipher Pol agents were inside the Fabriophase, but it was unclear to them as the barrier had been active since the day before. He also stated that Egghead's researchers had evacuated with their ships' coordinates being tracked, and that Jewelry Bonney had been seen on the island, to which Saturn ordered to sink the researcher's ships in case they knew too much, while Bonney could just be left behind.[5] After the Marines learned of York's capture at the hands of the Straw Hats and after Saturn declared anything else besides York, Punk Records and the power plant required for the Mother Flame as expendable, Doberman questioned if that included the Cipher Pol agents on Egghead. Doberman was assured by Saturn that he was only talking about the worst-case scenario, but also instructed by the Elder that human lives were no different than insects.[11]

He would later invade Egghead alongside the Marines and rushed to Saturn's aid after Saturn was stabbed by Bonney, but his help was harshly brushed off by Saturn since the latter knew the blow wasn't critical.[12]

Anime and Manga Differences[]

McGuy vs Doberman in the Anime

Doberman vs. McGuy.

In the anime, he is seen arguing with one of his subordinates over the fact that Rob Lucci killed all 500 hostages on the spot and even went so far to point to the Japanese symbol for "justice" on the back of his coat, saying that "justice is not child's play".

In his first anime appearance, his cap shadows his left eye, making it appear that this eye socket was empty; however, in One Piece Blue Deep, and in many other places, it is clear Doberman does indeed have two eyes, but doesn't have the left pupil. In the anime during the Marineford Arc, however, he is depicted as having both pupils.

During the Summit War of Marineford, when Whitebeard ordered his allies to backup Luffy, Doberman was given an additional scene of fighting against McGuy, which was not present in the manga.
