A Demon is a creature that according to Christian and Jewish religions, comes from the depths of Hell. They are follows of the Devil (also called Satan or by the name Lucifer) who is a fallen Angel.
According to the Bible, Demons are said to be born from Lucifer's, uprising against God. Lucifer was an Archangel who was proud and believed that he should rule above God. When he tried to overthrow God, Lucifer gathered up his followers and tried to overthrow Him but failed to do so. As punishment Lucifer and his followers were cast out of Heaven and into the depths of Hell. Demons do not have just one depicted form like the Angel they can come in many forms.
While the Japanese do not worship heaven and hell, they have a creature similar to the Demon called the Oni. Oni is therefore translated to Demon, and modern day depictions of Oni are much closer to Christian and Jewish views of Demons. Oni can also mean ogre, which is how most Oni is depicted.

[edit] One Piece
While there have been no Oni-like creatures in One Piece, the description of the Demon (or Oni) is is often used to describe a person. In addition, several characters were called demons, or children of demons. There are also characters who physically resemble demons.
Usually, characters being referred as demons are considered to be dangerous and a threat to the world's stability. Such people are often known to have committed illegal acts (or at the very least related to) of unimaginable magnitude, leading to them being labeled as such. However, the World Government have sometimes labeled such characters due to their biased ideals, the most prominent victims of such prejudice being Nico Robin and the rest of the Oharan Clan. They are feared by the world in general. However, some people can look past such "demonic" titles and accept these people, such as the Straw Hat Pirates accepting the "Demon Child" Robin, and Boa Hancock did not care if Monkey D. Luffy was the son of demons.
