Personality

As Carmel noted, Linlin was once a truly kind-hearted person. At five years old, Linlin tried to help people and even animals such as a bear and a wolf. However, her benevolent intentions ended up with dangerously violent results due to her monstrous strength and innocent simplicity, as she slapped a bear for devouring a wolf, accidentally killing it in the process. She also fractured a giant's bones while trying to smack a mosquito on him. Linlin even cried in genuine remorse after she accidentally killed the bear. She would also try to "fix" the appearances of her fellow orphans, which was actually attempting to tear off their racial features, being unable to understand the harm she was inflicting. This has carried over to her current situation, as while her dream of creating a country without discrimination is noble, she's willing to use violence and extortion to force people to follow her commands.

Despite her elderly age of 68, Linlin has childish tendencies. After capturing Brook, Linlin playfully patted and caressed the living skeleton and carried Brook with her to sleep at night like a teddy bear and cried hysterically when she thought Brook had died. When Carmel's photo was destroyed and shown to her, Linlin even broke down crying like a baby as she recalls the time when she was a five year old girl, questioning why Carmel left her behind at Elbaf.

She refers to herself with "ore" (おれ?), a very masculine way of saying "I", instead of the gender-neutral "watashi" (?) that most other females use.[1] Like many others, Big Mom has a distinct style of laughing: "Mamamama".[2][3][4] However, she has also laughed in a normal "Hahahahahaha" style[5][4] (occasionally with a drawn-out "Haaaaaaaa" at the beginning,[6][3]) and has even combined it with her unique laughter in the form of "Haaaaaahahamamamama".[7][8]

Gluttony

I wonder if we can explain the situation? She is like a monster who would destroy a whole country for sweets! One of the Yonko... Big Mom!
— Minister of the Left on Big Mom[9]

Big Mom is an extremely gluttonous pirate who loves to eat sweets above all else[10] and has all the islands under her external protection pay her with metric tons of whatever kind of confectionery or pastry they can produce.[11] Even as a child Linlin was easily persuaded to stay on Elbaf after her parents allowed her to eat as much sweets as she wanted. She is obsessed with sweets to the point of destroying entire countries for failing to deliver them.[12] In fact, she loves her sweets so much that her subordinates or her territory holds less importance compared to it.[13] Despite this, she does not lose control when Luffy claimed to have eaten all the candy that Fishman Island owed her; instead, she correctly deduced that he was lying in order to protect Fishman Island.[14] Big Mom is particularly fond of wedding cakes, as she ordered a gigantic wedding cake to be made simply as a treat to celebrate the acquisition of the technology of the Germa Kingdom after she slaughtered the Vinsmokes and even when sleeping, she would sleep talk about eating wedding cakes. According to Pudding, Big Mom will even get enraged and destroy the whole wedding hall if anyone made a mess of the wedding cake.[15] When the wedding cake was presented during the ceremony, Big Mom greatly expressed gluttonous joy and excitement to the point she salivated.[16] True to Pudding's words, Big Mom went berserk with tremendous fury to the point of killing several chefs in a fit of rage right after Luffy ruined the wedding cake.

Eating Disorder

Big Mom Eats Sweet City

Big Mom terrorizes Sweet City during one of her cravings.

Big Mom suffers from an unknown disease dubbed as an "Eating Disorder" (食いわずらい, Kuiwazurai?), in which she becomes obsessively fixated on a "Sweet Theme", and will go on a crazed rampage in search of what she wants to eat. She has suffered from this disorder since before she was 5 years old, being the reason she was banished from her home country. While in this state, she will destroy everything in her path — including her castle, her subordinates, and even her own children — until she receives the food she wants.[17] When rampaging, her pupils become crazed and swirly.[18] Once her cravings are satiated, she becomes more affable and retains no memory of her actions during her rampage.[19]

Big Mom seems to retain a small amount of consciousness in this state, as Perospero managed to convince her to chase after the Straw Hats by lying that they had stolen a spare wedding cake (the food she desired at the time). However, the fact that she bought into such a lie so easily shows she lacks rationality.[20] She's also capable of giving out simple orders to homies to aid her in the pursuit of any perceived targets.[21][22] However, to some extent, she is capable of recognizing others in this state, as she recognized her daughters Pudding and Chiffon while furiously questioning them for being with the Straw Hats.

Hedonism

Stemming from her love for sweets, Big Mom is extremely fond of having tea parties which she dearly looks forward to from the bottom of her heart as noted by Jinbe. Thus, Big Mom is extremely generous to people who attend her tea parties, joyfully offering a large variety of pastry delicacies and extravagant drinks for them to eat and drink as much as they want and can be murderously enraged if her tea parties are ruined in any way.

She is very jolly when in a good mood and enjoys celebrating the fulfillment of her ambitions with song and dance, but her cheerfulness is tempered with horrendous malice and brutality, as for every Tea Party she held, Linlin sends her subordinates to specific places to plunder unique ingredients for her tea party, while also ordering them to massacre as many people as possible while robbing the ingredients, causing numerous people to end up dead or viciously brutalized in the process.[23] Big Mom has a particular penchant for singing malicious songs in a light-hearted and happy tone, as she sang Bloody Party together with her homies and some musicians of the Big Mom Pirates while planning Pudding's wedding.

Ambition

Big Mom's Dream

Big Mom's dream is having all the races in her family at the same eye level.

Inspired by Carmel's words (though she misunderstood them), Big Mom also desires to create a nation where all races can happily live together[24] due to wanting a "family" comprised of individuals of all races that she can dine with at eye level with via Caesar Clown's gigantification research.[25] Big Mom is so dedicated to this dream that she is willing to invest massive amounts of money in Caesar's research, even building a working replica of Punk Hazard's laboratory in the event that it was destroyed and offering more financial support after Caesar is brought to her with no results; however, her fixation on this dream rendered her oblivious to how Caesar was simply embezzling money from her for his own indulgences.[26] However, no giants live in Totto Land due to them hating Big Mom, especially after a botched arranged marriage when Lola ran away from giant Prince Loki, and Big Mom briefly became enraged when Vinsmoke Judge mentioned them; she has long-since given up on any attempt to reconcile with them.[27] Her obsession with diversity is not just limited towards her family; she also wishes to collect rare and unique animals for her own pleasure, as explained by her eighth daughter who claims that Big Mom would not be satisfied with just having all the races of the world for herself.[28]

Business Savvy

When calm and thinking rationally, Big Mom possesses a rather businesslike mindset and strongly believes that a pirate must accept no compromises or delays for something they want.[29] Pappug thinks she is protecting Fishman Island with a business perspective since the deals made with the candy qualify as racketeering[30], though she prioritizes sweets over money and treasure; she initially refused an alternative payment of treasure when Fishman Island's monthly candy tribute could not be met[31], only accepting out of amusement once Monkey D. Luffy openly stood up to and defied her over the payment.[32][33]

This even extends to her allies and crew; should one of them choose to leave her crew or cut ties with her, Big Mom forces them to give up something precious to them as compensation, uncaring of their reason for leaving to begin with.[34] Similarly, she expects all citizens of Totto Land to sacrifice portions of their lifespan as the price of residing in her country, further illustrating her desire to be compensated for everything she provides.[35] While Big Mom does not take much interest in money and treasures compared to sweets, she does have a strong liking in collecting special treasures that are rare and legendary such as the Tamatebako,[36] as shown when she learned than an intruder broke into her treasure room, her first concern was the Tamatebako.[37]

Big Mom has proven herself to be extremely treacherous and cunning, as she is willing to break promises and betray potential allies to get what she wants. While putting up a fake front of desiring an alliance with the Vinsmoke Family, she has no intention of marrying off one of her favorite daughters, Pudding, to create this alliance. Instead, mother and daughter plotted together to lure the other family in to massacre them during the wedding ceremony, in order for Big Mom to acquire the Germa Kingdom's cloning technology, a feat they intend to achieve by having the kingdom parked within their territory, all the while without needing to give Pudding to the Vinsmoke family. Pudding also claimed that Luffy and Nami are not meant to leave Whole Cake Island alive either, thus showing that Big Mom was intent on breaking her promise with Sanji about sparing their lives in exchange for his cooperation with this wedding.[38] Her seeming willingness to let her crew members go in return for something they possess is also a sham, as she actually demands lifespan amounts beyond what a single person is able to give her, resulting in her killing them and also taking the lifespans of the people closest to that person.[39] Should she somehow not be able to get any lifespan, she will throw out the deal altogether and physically attack the person.[40]

Selfishness

Big Mom is also immensely selfish and obsessed with power; her marriage of Pudding to Sanji is solely for the sake of gaining access to the advanced combat technology of Germa 66[41], a process which she is willing to repeat with all her children in order to strengthen her own crew.[42] When a marriage is threatened or annulled, Big Mom will become incredibly angry at the people responsible and aim to kill them mercilessly, even if they are her own children; the larger the power she fails to gain, the angrier she will become. This lust for power stems from her desire to overthrow the other Yonko and ultimately become the Pirate King.[43] Big Mom has some interest in the Poneglyphs despite being unable to read them, knowing they are the potential key to Raftel.[44]

Another sign of her selfishness is that while she conceived Pudding with her Third-eyed father for the sole purpose of using Pudding's third eye to read Poneglyphs in order to reach Raftel, she still insulted Pudding for her third eye, as seen when she disgustingly called it creepy, and ordered her to grow out her bangs to conceal it, while being completely uncaring of her feelings. She also discarded Pound after conceiving twin daughters with him and even allowed him to be killed. She is also willing to completely disregard her children's wishes on Marriage for the sole sake of strengthening her crew.[42] She seems to recognize others by their lineage first and foremost, as she often speaks of others in terms of their relation to their parents[45] and grandparents.[46] She also deceived Sanji into thinking that she would release his friends after he agreed to marry Pudding.[47]

Linlin apparently does not like to talk about things that are personal and gets angry when people question her. When Judge pointed out that he did not see any giants in Totto Land, Big Mom briefly gave an angry look before dodging the subject by claiming that he overlooked them.[48] When a first time guest asked her about Mother Carmel, she furiously responded to his inquiry by knocking him out with Haoshoku Haki.[49]

Linlin is also extremely hypocritical. While she hates people who do not keep their promises with her and will resort to ruthlessness towards said individuals, she has shown that she will not hesitate to lie or deceive others just to get what she wants. During her conversation with Jinbe, she states that a pirate should be free to do whatever they want, yet she forced him to pay a huge price which could result in his death. She also forces her own children to marry others without taking their feelings into account and refuses to give her crewmates the choice to leave her crew alive.

Cruelty

There are two things our Mama hates: bitter sweets, and tea-party no-shows. I have seen what happens to people who refuse her invitation out of ignorance. The sight of them breaking down in bitter regret is ohhh so painful to watch! A tea party invitation from Big Mom is tantamount to an absolute summons that cannot be refused! As they say, even the demons of hell dutifully attend our Mama's tea parties!
— Vito explains why people do not refuse Big Mom's tea party invitations.[50]

An extremely ruthless and unstable woman, Big Mom is infamous for destroying countries over slight infractions (though most often when they fail to make their monthly payment of sweets), disregarding any and all reasons for the failure while rationalizing that she despises people unable to keep their promises, which makes her a hypocrite as Big Mom herself does not keep her own promises.[38] Generally, there are two things she dislikes: bitter treats, and invitees not showing up for her tea party.[51] Demonstrating herself to be immensely brutal, she does not forgive those who refuse invitations to her tea parties, and she will kill people precious to the absentee as a "present".[52] She does not accept excuses of any kind, even if it was given in advance, nor if the reason was as important as attending a loved one's funeral. Even after dealing such traumatizing damage to an absentee, she would still send them an invitation to the next tea party and expect them to attend, as Jigra was given one more even after Big Mom killed his father.[53] Due to her reputation for brutal violence, even Caesar, who is dangerously known for his malevolent madness, is extremely terrified of her. Vinsmoke Judge also considered Linlin a madwoman. Even some of her children such as Brûlée and Opera are deathly fearful of Linlin as they are aware that their mother is capable of ruthlessly slaughtering her own children should they ever defy her. Big Mom particularly enjoyed killing people by taking away their lifespans, claiming it to be her favorite food. She gleefully killed Zepo in this manner and while she spared Pedro from immediate death, she took away up to 50 years of his entire life away, leaving Pedro a few short years left to live. She also tried to kill Jinbe in a similar manner and was extremely enraged that her powers had no effect on him. Though Sanji participated in the wedding due to the potential threats to those he cared about, Big Mom has no interest of attacking the Baratie and killing the head chef and Sanji's savior, Zeff.[54]

Big Mom's Malice

Big Mom's malice for those who go against agreements with her.

When it comes to dealing with enemy pirate crews, Big Mom specifically instructs her children and other subordinates to give her enemies false hope before crushing their spirits as brutally as possible.[55] Big Mom is highly confident in her power and fails to see most crews as even a remote threat due to her and her crew's capabilities.[56] Big Mom's malevolence extends to encouraging violent behavior in her children; when Anana wanted knives to cut up her stuffed animal, Big Mom immediately asked two of her sons to bring knives to her.[57] She also encourages and rewards deceitful behavior in her children, as her daughter Charlotte Pudding claims that Big Mom favors and pampers her due to her ability to lie convincingly.[58] On the occasion that she does uphold her promises and deals, if the other party fails to uphold or goes directly against their part in the agreement, Big Mom will display immense rage and will not hesitate to inflict the worst punishment upon them.[59]

Although she has no problem with having her children and subordinates attack her enemies, Big Mom will directly go after anyone who threatens anything extremely important to her, including things like her Poneglyphs and wedding cakes. Should she personally target someone, Big Mom's pride will cause her to get extremely angry if someone prevents her from attacking to the point of pushing the obstacle aside even if it is one of her children.[60]

She coldly discards her husbands once their children are born, never giving them the chance to either hug them or take part in raising them. This is because she considers them "outsiders" to the family, even passing this belief down to her children who don't care for their fathers or step-fathers.[61]

Additionally, despite her ambition to create a nation where all races can live together, Big Mom herself is not above discrimination as shown by her treatment against her own daughter Pudding for her third eye, which Big Mom herself finds creepy, and even cruelly convinced her to grow her bangs to cover it.

Psychological Crisis

Where did you go, Mother?!
— The reason for Linlin's breakdown.
Big Mom Screams and Releases Her Haoshoku Haki

Big Mom suffers a mental breakdown.

Big Mom is incredibly attached to Carmel, and became deeply heartbroken when the Holy Mother and other orphans of Sheep's House disappeared on her sixth birthday celebration. Adoring Carmel so much that Linlin would place a portrait of her in front of an empty seat during all Tea Parties, if this portrait is damaged in anyway, Linlin would enter a psychological crisis that would leave her fragile, physically and mentally. She would cry so loud at the damage inflicted at the only keepsake she had of Carmel that she became completely unaware of her surroundings, such as when Bege attempted to assassinate her. Unaware of the fact that she was responsible for Carmel's death, Linlin would wallow in devastation at this disappearance during her crisis.

Although Linlin's emotional stress at Carmel's disappearance is critical for her, she takes her love of sweets to an equal level, as she entered a state of confusion between her mental breakdown and eating disorder when both Carmel's portrait and wedding cake were destroyed, in which she became completely unresponsive to everything around her. Only when Luffy showed her the damaged portrait did Linlin's mental state tip over to her crying and reminiscence of her foster mother's disappearance. She was so angry at the destruction of the only portrait of Carmel that she swore to never forgive the Straw Hat Pirates for causing it.

Relationships

Family

Big Mom has 39 daughters, 46 sons, and 43 husbands, the latter of whom are scattered all around the world.[62] From her 85 children, Big Mom also has some grandchildren, such as Capone Pez.[63]

Parents

Charlotte Linlin's Parents

Linlin's parents.

When she was a young child, Linlin innocently looked up to her birth parents and believed anything they told her. Although her parents recognized her uncontrollable behavior and were ultimately willing to abandon her because of it, her mother cried after they had done so and both parents were hopeful that their daughter could live a better life under Mother Carmel's care.[64]

At first, Linlin seemed to be optimistic regarding their departure, believing they would return for her, even after a long period of absence. She eventually gave up and went to the Sheep's House without any signs of sadness nor anger to her now long-gone parents. Being attached to Carmel and eventually starting her own tyrannically matriarchal family, she never seemed to have any more mention of her own parents.[64]

Children

Soru Soru no Mi Infobox

Linlin callously kills her 16th son.

According to Charlotte Pudding, Big Mom marries her children off in order to strengthen her own crew and does not give them a choice in the matter. In addition to this, they are fully aware of how stubborn she can be, and Pudding herself claims that most of them have already given up on their dreams of marrying someone of their own volition. However, Lola was undeterred from finding a husband of her own and left the New World to find one, though Lola was ignorant of the extent of her mother's cruelty.[65]

While Big Mom has a lot of children, she does not put a lot of work into raising nor enforcing any moral limits to them (if anything, she encourages their cruelty). She allowed Anana to get a knife to mutilate her stuffed toys, even at the protest of her other children who told her not to encourage violent and psychotic behavior. Big Mom just brushes it off by saying that it is natural and that everyone should get along.[57]

Big Mom Abuses Chiffon

Linlin unfairly abusing Chiffon.

While most of her children are very loyal to her demands, Big Mom views them as a means to an end and only cares about them as long as they are obedient and do not stand in her way. When she entered one of her craving-induced rampages, Big Mom did not recognize Moscato as her 16th son and killed him for blocking her path.[66] Moreover, should any of her children defy her in any way, she will desire to have them killed without hesitation or remorse. She utterly loathes her disobedient daughter, Lola, as her running away from a political marriage with the Elbaf prince Loki ruined Big Mom's one opportunity to make peace with the giants and gain the power to defeat the other three Yonko and become the Pirate King. She even desires to have Lola killed, to the point that she plans to send an assassin after her if she ever acquires Lola's current location. Her hatred for Lola even extends to Chiffon, Lola's twin sister, simply because of their resemblance. Big Mom unfairly abused Chiffon greatly and left her with wounds that never healed, especially whenever Chiffon showed her face to her. This led Chiffon to lose affection for her mother and to side with Capone Bege in his plan to assassinate Big Mom.[67] Lola, on the other hand, is unaware of her mother's hatred for her and still believes herself to be an accepted member of the Charlotte Family.[68] Notably, in stark contrast to Lola's misaimed perception of her mother, Opera, Brûlée, Chiffon, and Perospero are completely aware of Big Mom's willingness to harm her own children.

Some of her children have proven to be more rebellious than most. Lola chose to leave to find a spouse of her own rather than of her mother's choice for her. Chiffon and Praline were more than willing to let her mother die in Bege's plan and Praline even went as far as to help disable her crew's territorial sea slugs to hinder their efforts to track their enemies. After Pudding falls in love with Sanji, she herself now desires to help him and his friends escape her mother's wrath.

Opera fears that she will kill him if she discovers that he failed to stop Jinbe[69] and Brûlée was afraid that she would be murdered by Big Mom if she were considered an associate of the Fire Tank Pirates in their plot to assassinate her.[70][71]

Among her many children, Big Mom appears to have favorites. Pudding is one such child, due to her tremendous acting skills and also her third eye, which has the potential to read the Poneglyphs. Pudding reciprocates this affection with loyalty to her mother, willingly putting up an act in front of Sanji and his family in order to convince them of Big Mom's commitment to their alliance. They also share a similar lust for violence, gleefully discussing the details of their plan to massacre the Vinsmokes during the ceremony.[38] Big Mom also selected a certain few of her children and appointed them Ministers within her territory, as well as further elevating Cracker, Smoothie, and Katakuri to the posts of Sweet Commander within her crew, showing her trust and respect for their worth and talents.

However, even Big Mom's favorite children do not completely escape her cruelty. When Pudding was a child, Big Mom ridiculed her third eye and advised her to cover it up, which has negatively affected how Pudding views herself even up to the present day. Pudding herself seems to realize this, as Big Mom seems to only value her for her potential to read the Poneglyphs. She is also quick to remind them of their place when they annoy her; when Katakuri steps in to attack Luffy before she can, she berates him as a "lowly child" and begins to scold him before he explains himself to her.[72]

Notably, Big Mom recognized both Chiffon and Pudding and even called out their name during one of her craving rampages, contradicting earlier assertions that she could not recognize her children or anybody else during her episodes.[73]

Ex-Husbands

They're born now... You've served your purpose.
— Linlin's reason for even having husbands.[74]

Big Mom Casts Pound Away

Big Mom casts Pound aside after the birth of his daughters.

Linlin took on 43 husbands solely to conceive children with them. During the term of her pregnancy, said husband of the current year stays with her, but upon successfully giving birth, she would swiftly discard the husband, without so much as allowing him to hold the child or children once, let alone taking a part in raising them.[75][74] All of them meant nothing to her as she considered them to be "outsiders" who have no connection to the Charlotte Family, a mentality she passed down to some of her children, whom she gave permission to kill these ex-husbands.[76] Her 25th ex-husband, Pound, was one to suffer such a treatment, being cast aside without so much as a notice beforehand once Linlin gave birth to their twin daughters, not even permitting the man to hold his daughters at least once,[74] and then later permitting Cracker to kill him.[76]

Crew and Other Subordinates

Big Mom's subordinates call her "Mama" (ママ, Mama?),[77][78] and most seem to be afraid of her.[79][80] So far, only Bobbin appears to be unafraid of her, even having a friendly chat with Big Mom after returning to Whole Cake Island.[81] Big Mom has scolded Tamago for being willing to negotiate over payments promised to her.[82] However, she does seem to value him as she wanted to punish Pedro for scarring one of Tamago's eyes.[83] Streusen was the first crewmate to have join Big Mom after persuading her to be a pirate.[84]

To sail with or under Big Mom, new allies and enlistees must form a familial connection with the crew;[85] because of this policy, the patriarch of the Vinsmoke Family arranged for his third son to be wed to the 35th daughter of the Charlotte Family.[86] However, in the event that a bride or groom from an outside family has multiple existing affiliations, they must sever connections that are external to the political agreement; this was the case with Sanji, with Pekoms revealing that Big Mom is only interested in Sanji's status as a Vinsmoke, rather than his present membership of the Straw Hat Pirates.[87] Big Mom will not allow her subordinates to leave her service, despite claiming otherwise.[88] The roulette she uses to determine the price they must pay is rigged to ensure that the victim will die.

Individuals like Cracker and Pudding have no fear of Big Mom and are fiercely loyal to her, gloating to enemies about how untouchable she is and stating that it is suicidal to fight against their mother.[89] Katakuri will even eliminate any possible threat he senses to Big Mom as he killed Jigra once he foresaw him attempting to assassinate the Yonko.

Streusen

Streusen first met Linlin when she was six years old. After witnessing Linlin's action that caused the disappearance of Carmel and the other orphans, Streusen believed it would be a waste to let her die and approached her in a friendly and helpful fashion. The two formed the Big Mom Pirates together.[90]

In the present time, Streusen respects Linlin's authority and acts humble towards her. In turn, she admires his culinary skills.[16] He was worried for her safety when Bege and the Firetank Pirates were about to assassinate her, and begged her to come to her senses.[91] Like all of Linlin's subordinates and allies, Streusen addresses her by her titles of "Mama" or "Big Mom";[92][93] however, he has used her given name. Unknown to Big Mom, he knows what caused Carmel's disappearance, having witnessed the act and being amused by it.[94]

Homies

The Homies are created by Big Mom's Devil Fruit powers; as such, they are very loyal to her.[95] She spends most of her time around her food-based homies, whom she frequently eats,[96] and while they may be afraid of death, they will not mind being eaten as long as their flavor is appreciated.[97] Despite their loyalty, homies are not above questioning Big Mom, such as when she goes on one of her craving rampages and threatens the lives of civilians and other homies.[98] This loyalty partially stems from fear, as homies naturally fear Big Mom's powerful soul[99] and will be forced to obey anyone who holds her Vivre Card since it also exudes the essence of her powerful soul, which only they can sense.[100] Out of all her homies, Big Mom seems to be most familiar with her bicorne hat, Napoleon, which acts as an adviser or informant by keeping her up to date on recent occurrences and her plans.[101] However, even Napoleon is not above questioning Big Mom, as demonstrated when it begged her to stop her senseless violence during her rampage in Sweet City.[102] Napoleon, Zeus, and Prometheus are three special Homies created from Big Mom's own soul fragments, granting them a higher level of power than other Homies,[103] and they even sleep in the same room as her, acting as her bodyguard and attacking anything that disturbs her.[104]

However, even her most loyal homies can disobey her, as Zeus briefly sided with the Sanji Retrieval Team during their escape and was used as an attack against Big Mom due to his liking for Nami's thunder clouds.

Protectorates

With her capitalist mindset, Big Mom only imparts protection upon her chosen territories for as long as they can meet the demanded candy tribute and will not hesitate to have them destroyed if they are unable to pay it.[105] Her idea of "protection" specifically offers only protection from external pirate attacks, as Pekoms stated that the local uprising on Fishman Island was none of his crew's concern.[106] The sweets produced by Fishman Island were a particular favorite of hers.[107] She refuses to give any period of grace under normal circumstances, but was willing to do so once for Fishman Island simply because she was amused by Luffy standing up to her.[32][33] Upon knowing that one of the treasures offered as compensation is the Tamatebako, a national treasure of Fishman Island, Big Mom got so excited that she decided to completely forgo the island's failure to give its monthly candy tribute, showing that she is occasionally willing to accept alternative forms of payment if it is something that catches her interest.[108]

Enemies

Vinsmoke Family

Big Mom initially pretended to be cordial and accommodating to the Vinsmoke Family under the guise of wanting to form an alliance with them.[109][87] Through the family, she plans to gain access to the advanced battle technology employed by its army, Germa 66.[110] In turn, Judge wants to use her forces to conquer the North Blue once more and re-establish the kingdom of the Vinsmoke Family.

Despite the "alliance", however, Judge dislikes Big Mom as a person and views her as a "madwoman". For this reason, he deliberately sought out his estranged son Sanji in order to meet her demands for a blood connection to her family, as he refused to give her one of his "precious" sons.[111]

After Judge and his children arrived at the Whole Cake Chateau, Big Mom treated them as her guests, having lunch with them and giving them a tour of her library. However, Big Mom also dislikes Judge and his family, referring to them as the "annoying leadership" of her true desire, Germa 66.[112] In fact, Big Mom never intended to form an alliance with the Vinsmoke family in the first place and planned on murdering Judge and his children from the start. Judge, for his part, also intended to effectively take Charlotte Pudding hostage after the wedding as leverage against Big Mom. As such, neither of them had good intentions for the other, which they hid under the guise of civility.

At the wedding, Big Mom was anticipating the assassination of the entire Vinsmoke Family, but during the ensuing chaos caused by Luffy, her intention to murder the Vinsmoke Family was revealed. Judge was extremely distraught at this treachery and even cried.[113] After Big Mom's assassination plot was thwarted, all of the Vinsmokes became her enemies. Judge later attacked Big Mom directly, cursing her in extreme anger for crushing his dreams and betraying him. However, Big Mom simply smiled at his anguish, told him to die for her own dreams, and proceeded to calmly shatter his spear before smiting him with a bolt of Zeus' lightning. She also personally attempted to kill Reiju twice during the confrontation and later effortlessly subdued Niji and Yonji when they tried to rescue Judge. She then prepared to execute the entire Vinsmoke Family along with their allies before being interrupted by the Whole Cake Chateau collapsing.[114]

Monkey D. Luffy

File:Big Mom Blocks Gear Fourth.png

Big Mom clashes with Luffy.

When she sent her subordinates to collect the monthly candy tribute from Fishman Island and called them after learning that they may not receive it, Luffy picked up the Den Den Mushi and claimed that he was responsible for the island's lack of candy. Big Mom accused him of lying and initially refused the treasure that he offered as compensation, but admitted that he had nerve for standing up to her and decided to target him instead of Fishman Island. In response, Luffy declared that he would defeat her in the New World and claim Fishman Island as his own territory because he could not leave Fishman Island under the protection of someone who would destroy it on a whim.[115] However, much later, Big Mom had discovered that the Tamatebako was among the treasures that Luffy gave to her, so Big Mom decided to show remission to Luffy as the Tamatebako was enough for her to let go of the entire matter.

Luffy's friction with Big Mom further intensified when he discovered that Sanji had been coerced into a political marriage with one of Big Mom's daughters, which would result in him leaving the Straw Hat Pirates. Knowing this, Luffy decided to sneak onto Whole Cake Island and ruin the ceremony.[116]

Although she views herself as much stronger than him, Big Mom apparently does not underestimate Luffy's strength, feeling the need to have Cracker, one of her most powerful children, aid Brûlée in dealing with Luffy's group.[117] At the same time, she seems to view him as a worthy opponent, looking somewhat disappointed when informed that Cracker would definitely defeat him.[118] Upon learning that Cracker was defeated, Big Mom's rage towards Luffy swelled as she unleashed a ferocious storm and sent an army to battle him.[119] When Luffy and Nami were captured and imprisoned, Big Mom contacted them through a Den Den Mushi and told Luffy that she was willing to let him and his crewmates leave safely due to her promise to Sanji, but threatened them to show them "hell" if they ruined Sanji and Pudding's wedding ceremony.[59] This turned out to be false, as Pudding informed Luffy and Nami that they would die along with Sanji. However, unbeknownst to Big Mom, Luffy escaped capture and aligned with Capone Bege to overthrow her during the wedding ceremony.

Big Mom was later shocked at Luffy's presence at the wedding ceremony and was enraged when he destroyed the wedding cake she was looking forward to eating before reflecting on Luffy's previous threats to her. She searched for the real Luffy among his duplicates and after he identified himself, she moved to attack him. When her second son, Charlotte Katakuri intervened and immobilized Luffy, Big Mom reprimanded him for his actions as she wanted to personally crush Luffy herself, but became horrified and shocked when she learned that he was aiming for Carmel's portrait.[72]

As Linlin reminisced her past about Carmel, she swore to never forgive the Straw Hat Pirates for destroying the only portrait she had of Mother Carmel.[91] After drawing Luffy out of Bege's castle body, she then proceeded to mock him by calling him a coward for running away, prompting him to attack her in anger. Luffy then declared that he would defeat her after taking down Kaido, causing her to laugh in amusement while telling him that he could not hope to defeat him before assuring him that he would not even make it out of her territory alive. When Luffy fell unconscious as a result of activating Gear Fourth, Big Mom prepared to execute him before being interrupted by the explosion of the Tamatebako box.[120]

Later, after entering another frenzy due to being denied the opportunity to eat the wedding cake, she furiously pursued Luffy and the Straw Hats to the edge of Whole Cake Island under the false belief that they stole a replacement cake (courtesy of Perospero's lies).

Vinsmoke Sanji

In order to gain access to the technology of Germa 66,[110] Big Mom falsely agreed to an alliance with Vinsmoke Judge.[87] In accordance with her usual terms, she demanded a family connection to seal the alliance, so Judge offered his third son, Sanji, to wed her 35th daughter, Charlotte Pudding.[86][109] Because of this, Big Mom primarily refers to Sanji as "the Germa boy"[45] and has ordered her subordinates to ensure that Luffy and his team do not succeed in meeting up with Sanji on Whole Cake Island.[55]

However, in addition to his political value as a member of the Vinsmoke Family, Big Mom has great respect for Sanji's cooking skills and his pirating exploits as a member of the Straw Hats; Tamago further intimates that, if Sanji cooperates with the wedding, it is likely that Big Mom will offer him an even better position within her crew than the one he currently enjoys with the Straw Hats. Sanji, however, flat-out rejected this offer.[121]

After finally consenting to marrying Pudding, Sanji asked Big Mom to spare his friends, which she readily agreed to do as long as Sanji married her daughter.[122] However, Sanji later overheard Pudding reveal that the wedding is actually a setup, and that Big Mom's true intention was to kill him and his family and take their technology for herself. Pudding also claimed that the Straw Hats will not leave the island alive either, meaning that Big Mom never intended to keep her promise with Sanji.[38] Big Mom herself later confirms this as she discusses her plans with Pudding, mocking Sanji as she excitedly imagines his brutal death at the altar.[123] Having learnt the truth, Sanji reunited with Luffy and joined his captain's plans to crash the wedding and ruin Big Mom's plans.[124]

As Linlin reminisce her past about Carmel, she swore to never forgive the Straw Hat Pirates for destroying the only portrait she had of Mother Carmel.[91] After the allied forces are defeated and Sanji gets trapped in Perospero's candy, Big Mom prepared to execute him before being interrupted by the explosion of the Tamatebako box.

Later, after entering another frenzy due to being denied the opportunity to eat the wedding cake, she furiously pursued Sanji and the Straw Hats to the edge of Whole Cake Island under the false belief that they stole a replacement cake (courtesy of Perospero's lies).

Brook

Brook Captured by Big Mom

Big Mom's reaction to her new collectable.

Upon seeing Brook, Big Mom immediately became fascinated with him and wants to capture him alive to add him to her collection.[125] Big Mom overpowered and questioned Brook as to why he was trying to steal the Poneglyph and mocked him for his intentions but Brook responded to not underestimate his crew. Big Mom defeated Brook and mocked him by petting him as the latter felt humiliated for his defeat. Big Mom held high praises for Brook's strength, calling his fighting wonderful as well as being able to injure her strongest homies for the first time.

Big Mom is extremely fond of Brook to the extent that she chose to carry the Straw Hat musician by her side like a toy instead of placing him in her library collection of rare creatures right away. Even when she went to bed at night, she chose to carry Brook in her hands while sleeping. When Brook was replaced by a skeletal lookalike, Big Mom thought he had died and cried hysterically, although she got over him at the thought of eating wedding cake.[126]

At the wedding, she was surprised to see him still alive as he revealed himself after destroying Mother Carmel's portrait, causing her to go into shock, stammering at Brook for his act of attacking the photo.[127]

As Linlin reminisce her past about Carmel, she swore to never forgive the Straw Hat Pirates for destroying the only portrait she had of Mother Carmel.[91]

Nami

Since Nami is also part of the Sanji Retrieval Team, Big Mom is Nami's enemy as well. After learning of Nami's friendship with her estranged daughter, Lola, Big Mom furiously demanded Lola's whereabouts so she could send an assassin to kill Lola.[128] However, Nami refused to betray Lola so Big Mom assigned her 5th son Opera to force information out of Nami.[129]

As Linlin reminisce her past about Carmel, she swore to never forgive the Straw Hat Pirates for destroying the only portrait she had of Mother Carmel.[91] Later, after entering another frenzy due to being denied the opportunity to eat the wedding cake, she furiously pursued Nami and the Straw Hats to the edge of Whole Cake Island under the false belief that they stole a replacement cake (courtesy of Perospero's lies). During the chase, Nami further enraged Big Mom when she managed to draw Zeus away with her thunder clouds, harnessed its power with her Clima-Tact, and directly attacked Big Mom herself with a incredibly powerful surge of lightning.

Pedro

Despite being enemies due to Pedro invading her territory, Big Mom developed a respect for him after the latter tried convincing her against taking his lifespan by removing his eye, causing her to not take away his entire lifespan.[130] However, due to his involvement with the Sanji Retrieval Team in the present day, she once again attempted to kill him along with his new allies when she finally encountered them in person.

Jinbe

Sometime after the Battle of Marineford, Big Mom allowed former Shichibukai Jinbe and his crew to serve under her by having her daughter Charlotte Praline marry Aladine.[131] This was enacted in part due to Big Mom placing Fishman Island under her protection, though she allowed the Sun Pirates to generally do as they pleased. However, Jinbe is not loyal to her and is considering severing ties with the Big Mom Pirates, but worries of what Big Mom will do to Fishman island.[132] Jinbe has told the Straw Hats that he will join them once he settles his business with Big Mom.[133] When Jinbe appeared before her with important matters, Big Mom immediately assumed that he intended to leave the Big Mom Pirates[134] and, upon having her suspicions confirmed, demanded that he give up something in return.[135] The next day, it is later said in a newspaper that Jinbe retracted his intention of leaving her service. This was due to having the (correct) feeling that the roulette itself was designed for ensuring the death of those who spin it. Furthermore, Jinbe later learned that the numbers on which the roulette may land signal additional allies or friends that will be executed, along with the person who originally spun the roulette.[136]

Jinbe later fulfilled his intention of leaving Big Mom by attacking Charlotte Opera as well as freeing a captive Luffy and Nami, which he notes was an act of rebellion to which there was no turning back. Jinbe also persuaded Luffy and his friends to join Capone Bege in his plot to overthrow Big Mom at the Tea Party. Big Mom was angered upon seeing Jinbe at the wedding ceremony with the Straw Hats. After Jinbe officially declared his intention to leave the Big Mom Pirates in order to join Luffy's crew, Big Mom attempted to take away Jinbe's lifespan. Her power had no effect on him due to him having no fear towards her, which he explains by saying that he was joining the crew of the future Pirate King before officially leaving her services. In response to his defiance, Big Mom was further enraged and resorted to brute force.[137]

As Linlin reminisce her past about Carmel, she swore to never forgive Jinbe nor the Straw Hat Pirates for destroying the only portrait she had of Mother Carmel.[91] Later, after entering another frenzy due to being denied the opportunity to eat the wedding cake, she furiously pursued Jinbe and the Straw Hats to the edge of Whole Cake Island under the false belief that they stole a replacement cake (courtesy of Perospero's lies).

Caesar Clown

File:Caesar's Frivolity.png

Caesar squandering Big Mom's money on his own hedonism.

In the past, Caesar Clown was commissioned by Big Mom[138] to research and develop a viable method of gigantification. However, Caesar quickly concluded that such a goal is impossible to achieve even for him, and each time when Big Mom asked him about his progress, he simply requested more money to help further his research, only to spend it on hedonism instead.[139] When her crew attacked the Thousand Sunny to retrieve him, Caesar begged the Straw Hats to protect him from her, fearing she would discover the embezzlement should she capture him.[140] When she finally caught up with him, Caesar managed to convince her that his research had nearly been completed before it was destroyed by Luffy and Trafalgar Law during the Punk Hazard incident, but Big Mom merely revealed that she had constructed a replica of the required facility and would continue to offer more funding for him to rebuild and finish the gigantification drug within the fortnight that Caesar claimed he needed, making Caesar fear for what could be the last two weeks of his life.[141]

Caesar was eventually liberated from his servitude by Bege and joined in an alliance with the Fire Tank Pirates and Straw Hats to take Big Mom down.[142]

Eustass Kid

No interaction has been shown but during the time-skip, Kid attempted to invade Totto Land but was defeated and forcibly "escorted" from the territory. He later sunk two of the Yonko's ships while having no concern if she retaliated.

Urouge

Urouge also had some hostilities with Big Mom after wandering into her territory. After Urouge defeated one of the Sweet Commanders, Big Mom was enraged and had Prometheus and Zeus create a storm while sending Cracker to deal with Urouge.

Capone Bege

Capone Bege and his crew became subordinates of Big Mom following the Battle of Marineford.[143] In order to seal the alliance, Bege married Charlotte Chiffon and had a son with her.[63] Bege appears to be loyal to Big Mom, as he followed her orders of bringing Caesar Clown and Sanji to her[144] and even shot Pekoms for trying to let Sanji go.[145] As a result of this loyalty, Big Mom appears to trust Bege implicitly, giving him the position of "Rook" and putting him in charge of security for Sanji and Pudding's wedding.[146]

Unbeknownst to Big Mom, Bege's reason to join her was to find any chances to kill her and claim her head.[147]

Upon recovering from her shock, Big Mom was notified of Bege's betrayal, and swiftly attacked Bege's fortress body, causing severe injuries to him.[148]

Gol D. Roger

In the past, Roger managed to read one of the Road Poneglyph which was already in Big Mom's possession in his quest to reach Raftel. Big Mom was aware that he was able to read it through his mysterious ability to hear the "voice of all things" and stated that she would be able to do the same, apparently referring to her daughter Pudding's third eye. Since Roger's attempt and success in reading her poneglyph, she vowed to not let anyone who managed to read her poneglyphs or have obtained a copy from them to get away.

Giants

So you've finally done it, Linlin! You aren't qualified to give thanks to the sun...! Even if you are a child, there is a limit on how much one can forgive...!
— Jorl expressing his hatred for Linlin.
File:Linlin Kills Jorl.png

Linlin dishonorably wounding giant hero Jorl, a primary reason for the giants' hatred towards her.

When she was five years old, Linlin was originally accepted by the giants of Elbaf. It was the first time in her life she was able to stand next to people and buildings her size, although there were incidents of her uncontrollable strength coupled with her simple-mindedness causing quite some trouble, such as greatly injuring Eiri when she tried to swat a mosquito on him. However, friction between her and the giants began after she devastated a village because of her craving sickness. Jorl was enraged at her actions and labeled her as a devil, and attempted to cut her down only to be fatally injured by the rampaging Linlin and died as a result. Jarl was going to avenge Jorl, but spared Linlin because Mother Carmel begged him to.[64][149] After this incident, Big Mom is hated by every giant in the world and even those not of Elbaf came to hate her. When Linlin unknowingly made Mother Carmel and the Sheep's House orphans "disappear" at her 6th birthday party, a giant who witnessed the whole gruesome sight quickly fled the island and told everyone on Elbaf. From that day forward, the giants' hatred for Linlin grew even greater to the point that they even refrained from saying her name.[150]

Many years later, Linlin was given an opportunity to reconcile with them when the prince of Elbaf proposed to Lola; Big Mom was on the verge of tears of joy when it happened, as she also intended to integrate the army of Elbaf into her forces via this would-be union. However, because Lola ran away from the wedding and Big Mom's attempt to use Lola's twin sister Chiffon as a stand-in failed, her relationship with giants grew worse. After that, Linlin effectively gave up on trying to bring the giants to her side, and instead changed her focus to artificially gigantifying her family.[151] Despite ceasing her pursuits for real giants, Big Mom remains frustrated to this day for her failure to bring them over to her side and will be enraged when someone mentions giants around her as when Vinsmoke Judge mentioned how he did not see any in Totto Land. Linlin prefers not to publicly admit that there is not a single giant living among the racially diverse populace of Totto Land, as she swiftly claimed that Judge might have just missed them.[152] It was because of this disaster that Linlin developed a murderous hatred for Lola, to the point of unfairly mistreating Chiffon as well.

Yonko

As a Yonko seeking to become Pirate King, Big Mom wishes to take down her fellow Yonko, as she reflected that she could have defeated Kaido, Shanks, and Whitebeard had she formed an alliance with Elbaf. It is unknown if she thinks any differently of Blackbeard.[153] However, she does at least respect Kaido's power, as she was incredulous that Luffy would have any chance of defeating him.[154]

Others

Carmel

Carmel Teaches Linlin

Carmel acting as the first person to understand and forgive Linlin's good intentions.

Mother Carmel was the first person in Linlin's life who ever understood her. After her parents left her behind at Elbaf, Carmel took Linlin in and gave her a home with Carmel always forgiving Linlin regardless of what mistakes she made. Thus, Linlin became extremely attached to Carmel.[64] Big Mom referred to Mother Carmel as everybody's "mother" in her Tea Party.[155] Even in adulthood, Linlin would always put up her photo on the table every time she has her tea parties and she would go on a psychological rage if anyone were to just merely damage her portrait. Big Mom will also get mad if people question her about her relationship to Carmel as shown when she used her Haoshoku Haki to knock out a curious guest. Upon Luffy showing Linlin Carmel's broken portrait, Linlin broke down crying while yelling out her strange shriek as she reminisced on her past.[156]

Unknown to Big Mom, Carmel planned to sell her off to the World Government after discovering her potential, and that she never actually had any affection for Linlin (or any of the orphans).[157] Incidentally, Big Mom herself is unaware of her role in causing the disappearance of Carmel and the other children of Sheep's House.[158]

Linlin inherited Carmel's dream for a country where everybody could see eye to eye, but misunderstood it. She later contacted Caesar Clown and funded his gigantification research.

Sheep's House Children

Despite her current desire to coexist with other races, she showed a very limited understanding for her fellow Sheep's House residents of different races, trying to "fix" a longarm boy and a fishman child by removing a joint and a fin respectively. However, the children got along with Linlin because Carmel asked them to. Even after they were exiled from Elbaf due to Linlin's rampage, they continued to live happily with her. On her sixth birthday, the children of Sheep's House prepared her croquembouche made of semla. She was filled with joy and cried as she dine on the sweets but was grief stricken when the other children and Carmel "disappeared".

Gerth

Gerth was a giant girl who lived on Elbaf during Linlin's childhood. She became a close friend of the future Yonko. However, Gerth was utterly horrified when Linlin destroyed a village.

Yonko

As the Yonko are not allied to each other, Big Mom views her fellow Yonko as enemies. In fact, she desires to overthrow them and believes that she would have been able to do this if she could use the forces of Elbaf in addition to her own. She also seems to know about Kaido's true nature and acknowledges his strength, as she brushed off Luffy's claim on taking him down while referring to the former as a "thing".[159]
