"Buggy" has been featured, meaning it was chosen as an article of interest.
Buggy the Star Clown is the captain of the Buggy Pirates as well as the co-leader of the Buggy and Alvida Alliance, and a former apprentice of the Roger Pirates. Shortly after the Battle of Marineford, he became a member of the Shichibukai and the leader of the pirate dispatch organization "Buggy's Delivery" (バギーズ デリバリー Bagīzu Deribarī?).
Buggy's face is always covered with make up, just like a clown, and the motifs change from time to time: in his first appearance he had crossbones going down his face forming an X; he also had two blue lines near both of his eyes, red lipstick and his jolly roger on his hat. However, in later episodes after the Loguetown arc his look changes. First, a green star appears in the middle of the forehead, two half circles appear beneath the eyes, and there is a straight line on the middle of his chin. After that (when his crew meets Ace), he has two green dots on both sides of his head and four big green dots on the rim of his hat, which still has the jolly roger on it. He also has green eyeliner and green lipstick, with a curvy line going down both sides of his face. In the Impel Down saga, he has crossbones again going down his forehead to below his eyes, two pink lines pointing up, and red lipstick.
In his pirate captain attire, he dons a striped white and red shirt with short sleeves, white gloves reminiscent of the ones worn by clowns, a sash around his waist like many other pirates, and a pair of loose pants reaching to his calves, just above a pair of striped socks and pointy shoes. He also has a scarf around his neck. Hanging from his shoulders there is an orange, fur-lined captain's coat. On his head he has an orange hat with his jolly roger on it, over a bandanna with the same pattern of his shirt. While in the manga his scarf and sash are orange just like many other components of his attire, his pants are light-brown and the epaulets of his coat are simply gold, in the anime he was given a much more bright color scheme, with a purple scarf, green sash, light-green pants, and green epaulets.
During the Whitebeard War Saga, after escaping from Impel Down, Buggy modified his striped prisoner's outfit with salvaged Marine uniform pieces to recreate the effects of a pirate captain: a coat and a tricorn that had the symbols crossed out.
As a young man serving aboard Gol D. Roger's ship, he looked mostly the same; the only notable differences were his shorter hair and smaller stature. He wore a different outfit in each flashback but dressed similarly to how he does now, usually seen in striped T-shirts (or collared shirts), white gloves, baggy pants, pointed shoes, and donning a sash. He wore beanies rather than a captain's hat and he lacked the captain's coat.
It was revealed in an SBS question that the blue tassels coming from the sides of Buggy's hat are his actual hair in the shape of two ponytails. While in the confines of Impel Down, Buggy's long hair is tied into just one ponytail.
After the timeskip, Buggy's appearance has changed greatly. His hair is not tied anymore and now looks spikier. He wears a big red and white, stripped tricorn with a rim ornated with several golden little balls and his crew's Jolly Roger on the front. He wears a big, red cloak, using his Devil Fruit powers to make himself appear larger.
Buggy will often feign intelligence, only to have his true incompetence revealed. Although he is not "stupid" in the traditional sense, he is prone to gross misjudgments that cost him; usually this is due to his overconfidence. In the original Japanese version of One Piece, he inserts "hade ni" (派手に hade ni?, literally meaning "flashy"), into almost every sentence he speaks ("Flashily die! You flashy bastard!").
His big red nose is something he is very touchy about, going so far as to destroy an entire town when a couple of kids made fun of his nose. Occasionally, he will mishear what others say as an insult about him or his nose, possibly due to paranoia.
He has a number of running gags in the series, including a delayed reaction towards things, he will at first act casually then when it sinks in he will act completely the opposite (for example, when Ace appeared on his ship, Buggy first greets him politely. Then, when he realizes he is on his ship, he blurts out "Who the hell are you?"). Sometimes he will even do the opposite of this and overact the part then become calm having thought the situation through more deeply after the initial reaction. He also has what some might consider "dumb luck"; no matter what happens to him he is lucky enough to survive somehow (including being struck by lightning at Loguetown, being chased by Smoker, being frozen alive by Admiral Aokiji, or inadvertently slashed by Dracule Mihawk).
Furthermore, through his crazy streaks of good fortune, coupled with weaselly actions and lying, he has managed to gain power and favor with people by doing next to nothing. Oftentimes, happenstance makes him look more impressive and intimidating than he really is; Buggy won't even intend to look good and have impressed people unintentionally or by total accident, or pass himself off as a substantial figure by being dishonest or stealing the credit for a masterful feat from someone else. Though he once tried to keep it a secret so he wouldn't become a target for rival pirates and the Marines, he also started playing up the fact he was originally one of the legendary Roger Pirates (despite being just an apprentice) once the truth was out.
These kinds of misunderstandings caused a large number of Impel Down escapees to join his crew (though Buggy did not intend to impress them during his jailbreak and only continued out of fear the prisoners, who were much more vicious and infamous than he was, would turn on him if he appeared weak) and Buggy to be selected to become a Shichibukai by the World Government just because he looked reputable from their point of view, though Galdino is well aware of Buggy's true nature of cowardice and ineptitude. After the timeskip, he has even stooped to making himself look bigger and more intimidating as a Shichibukai by splitting up his body underneath a cloak and growing out his hair.
Buggy is one of the few villains to become reformed after facing Luffy, though only slightly. He also begins to accept people's kindness, though he can still be cruel to anyone who is not a member of his crew or is aiding him in his goals. He also is fun loving and displays a huge fondness for parties, admiring those who are equally fun loving (strangely, he shares this trait with Shanks). He takes great joy in riding on the beliefs of others and took a great advantage of the cheering crowds of prisoners from Impel Down upon his escape, who were impressed with his history on Roger's crew, as well as his connections with Shanks. Strangly enough he breeds extreme loyalty in his his crew as the Impel Down prisoners all joined his crew and are all completely loyal to him increasing his strength to that of the other warlords.
He also has a strong love of treasure. Unfortunately for him, his obsession with treasure led to him leaving himself open in his first encounter with Luffy to attack Nami (who was attempting to take off with said treasure) and was just the small window the superior Luffy needed to defeat him. Buggy fails to understand how anything but gold, silver or jewels can be considered "treasure"; an opinion which apparently has not changed in over 22 years even though so far it has led to constant failure.
His primary goal is to get revenge against Luffy, for defeating him, and Shanks, for ruining his dreams during his youth. His dream is to become Pirate King and own all the treasures in the world. After the escape from Impel Down, with the encouragement of his followers, he put his sights on defeating Whitebeard and conquering the "top". Many of those he has known previously such as Luffy and Whitebeard see him as little threat.
Another strange trait of Buggy's is his complete lack of fear toward swordsmen, no matter how powerful they may be, in contrast to his cowardice against any other people stronger than him. This can be seen in such instances as his fight against Roronoa Zoro and Mihawk. This most likely is a trait he habitually developed because of his Devil Fruit-based immunity to cutting and slicing attacks. This is somewhat justified as no swordsman no matter how strong can ever kill him (although, if they fight seriously and can utilize haki they can bypass his Devil-Fruit immunities).
Of the Roger Pirates, most relationships between Buggy and the other crewmates remain unknown. Though he was often punished by Silvers Rayleigh, he still has much respect for the former first mate of the crew. Buggy, just like Shanks, must have had a good relationship with Roger, as he was seen crying at his execution.
It has been shown through flashbacks that he would fight with Shanks over just about anything. The Marines themselves describe their relationship as a 'brotherly bond' and Whitebeard himself had noted the pair were always together. He is also not above exploiting his previous "friendship" with Shanks, whom he discredits now after they have gone their separate ways.
Yet, despite what they claimed to each other, when the two met for the first time in years, Shanks was able to trick Buggy into giving Luffy the Straw Hat back. Buggy then had a go at Shanks for it afterwards while Shanks himself was calm despite Buggy's reaction, indicating that despite their differences the pair's relationship is still on similar grounds to what it was in the past.
Buggy Pirates and Alliance with AlvidaEdit
Before his loss to Luffy, he was willing to use his own crew as human shields. Afterwards, he shows a lot more concern about their well-being. Through a series of adventures, Buggy manages to recruit a transformed Alvida to his cause, regroups with his crew, and recombines with the rest of his body.
They follow the Straw Hats to Loguetown, where Buggy manages to trap Luffy onto the execution platform, but before he can lop off his head, a bolt of lightning strikes his swords, destroying the platform and letting Luffy escape. After this event, the Buggy Pirates follow the Straw Hats into the Grand Line, but they are taking a different path than them.
When Buggy, was sent flying by Luffy, the crew was depressed and his crewmates even built a tomb for him. However, when Buggy was captured and sent to Impel Down, they gave up searching for him, because they were afraid for their lives. But after the war, they lied to Buggy saying that they never ceased looking for him.
After Buggy's escapade from Impel Down, many fellow escapees from the prison have heard of his past as a member of Gol D. Roger's crew but miss out that he is a mere apprentice, and potentially the weakest member on board. Consequently, they come to admire him as a powerful pirate. During the course of the Battle of Marineford, Buggy repeatedly shows his cowardice, but the escapees keep mistaking it as courage and bravado, furthering their admiration.
Buggy and Mr. 3 teamed up in Impel Down in order to escape the Great Gaol, and sharing a hatred for Luffy, quickly became friends. However, they usually found that their attempts to escape without the assistance of Luffy and his allies proved fruitless, and it was only through Luffy's help that they managed to break free. During their time side by side in Impel Down, Galdino acted as the more cautious of the two, frequently warning Buggy about the dangers that the two of them have triggered throughout the course of their escape from the Gaol; in the anime he has, on more than one occasion, had to do things himself to ensure Buggy's safety as well as his own, using his wax to supply themselves with convenient implements to fend for their lives with. After Buggy gains his blindly loyal followers, Mr. 3 remains the only one who can see through Buggy's facade.
By the end of the war, when Buggy reunites with his old crew, the escapees join his crew, admiring First Mate Mohji and Second Mate Cabaji as well. In truth, these new recruits are more powerful than Buggy himself and they all had high bounties in their past. Their combined strength is far more then Buggy's old crew, however, their utter loyalty to Buggy means they are no threat. According to Mr. 3, who also joins the crew and is the only one who sees through the facade, their ears are so full of hope that they are half-deaf.
Friends and AlliesEdit
Buggy and Galdino teamed up in Impel Down in order to make their escape. Harboring a common hatred towards Luffy, they quickly made friends with each other and spent most of their time in Prison together, trying to find a way out. While Galdino was the more cautious of the two, Buggy was the more spontaneous one. Surprisingly, he was also the more crafty of the two, quickly taking advantage of the situations they were in to pull out his heroics, much to Galdino's dismay. Galdino seems be the only one whose advice Buggy takes seriously, as well as the only one who sees through Buggy's facade. The two of them seem to have some basic level of concern for each other, with Galdino actually showing fear that Buggy had lost it when he declared he could beat the marines. But that can be credited to Buggy being a vital aspect to Galdino's survival, since the Impel Down escapees only listened to Buggy. Galdino may on some level see that Buggy has a way of getting powerful people to aid him such as Luffy and Alvida and may see Buggy as a path to his former status. Buggy's ability to gather powerful allies is not something Galdino is blind too and he may think that Buggy is very useful in his own way.
He is good friends with Gaimon despite battling him when he first crashed onto the island. Ironically, neither of them knows the other's relationship with Luffy.
Portgas D. AceEdit
He was also good friends with Portgas D. Ace. During his pursuit of Blackbeard, Ace happened across the Big Top while Buggy and his crew were partying. Attracted by the "very strong and sweet scent" of food, Ace boarded the ship unnoticed and proceeded to help himself - Buggy did not notice his presence until, upon hearing Buggy and Alvida say that they were in pursuit of Luffy but had no clue where he was, Ace offered to give them some helpful information. Ace, however, fell asleep moments later. Though Buggy's crew wanted to capture him, Buggy forbade it, knowing that Whitebeard would not hesitate to take revenge. After Ace woke up, the entire crew apparently immensely enjoyed the rest of his momentary stay (though it seems Buggy continued the party mostly out of fear).
When the Buggy and Alvida Alliance approached Impel Down with the intention of rescuing Buggy, Cabaji exclaimed that their captain could be sentenced to execution just like their buddy Ace. Buggy himself seems to like Ace. After meeting Luffy on Level One, he mentions that Ace, unlike Luffy, happened to be a very swell guy - they were apparently drinking buddies for a while. Buggy also told Luffy that he was very upset when he heard the news of Ace's scheduled execution, but he did not want to risk his own life to save him. Like so many at the time, Buggy was shocked to see Ace fall to Admiral Akainu.
Buggy was caught by the Government and sent to Impel Down due to a careless mistake. As a result, the rest of the crew was forced by Alvida to leave him alone, and departed. However, after a series of events within the great prison, Buggy escaped and recruited many criminals, all of whom are, in truth, more powerful than he is. However, since they are blinded by his status as one of the Pirate King's former apprentices, and that he has been approached by Whitebeard and Shanks, two Yonko, they are willing to follow him anywhere, thus forming a new crew for the Clown Pirate. Later, Buggy reunites with his old crew, and the two combined, greatly increasing the crew's status and power. The Government also believed that Buggy's low bounty was due to him keeping a low profile on purpose, despite being a former member of the Pirate King's crew.
Buggy was thereby invited to join the Royal Shichibukai via a letter that he received. Upon doing so, his status as a wanted criminal is retracted, and he is now an ally of the Government.
Straw Hat PiratesEdit
Buggy and his circus-themed pirate crew first appeared in Orange Town (located on Organ Island in East Blue), and celebrating constantly. Luffy and Zoro (back then, the only two members of the Straw Hat Pirates) also arrived on the island, only to see that Buggy was terrorizing the villagers with the use of his Buggy Balls, which could destroy an entire block of wooden houses with a single shot. Also present was Nami, who was searching for Buggy's 10,000,000 worth of treasure and also his prized map to reaching the Grand Line. The trio decided to form a temporary alliance in order to best Buggy and his henchmen, and after a moderately difficult battle, they achieved it.
While he hated Luffy, he has proven that, though willing to exploit Luffy's naïve ways, he will work with him to his own goals if he is to benefit from it. Interestingly, Buggy's current relationship with Luffy is similar to his past relationship with Shanks: in a slightly friendly antagonistic way. He considers Luffy to be the worst troublemaker in the world, but was immensely shocked when discovering that Dragon, the Revolutionary, is Luffy's father.
Luffy came across Buggy attempting to break free from Impel Down in Level 1 of the Great Gaol. The ever-opportunistic Buggy attempted to use Luffy as his means to escape, but was only dragged down into the deeper levels during Luffy's attempt to rescue Portgas D. Ace. After Luffy was defeated by Magellan, Buggy and his new ally Mr. 3 ascended Impel Down back to Level 1, and, only with the help of Luffy and his band of escapees, managed to escape the Great Gaol. After arriving in Marineford, Buggy and his new crew, for the most part, neither assisted nor harmed Luffy nor his allies in the Battle of Marineford; however, he was unwillingly used as a shield by Luffy against Dracule Mihawk. Upon the battle's end, Buggy returned Luffy's straw hat and fled the battle with his new crew and Mr. 3.
However during the Zou Arc, Buggy retains his dislike for Luffy and they are technically enemies as Buggy is currently a member of the Shichibukai. He is also shown to be displeased to learn that Hajrudin and the Giant Warrior Pirates had left Buggy's Delivery to join the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. However despite this, Buggy benefited from the Straw Hat Crew's defeat of Doflamingo as it has increased business for his pirate dispatch company.
Abilities and PowersEdit
While not as powerful as other former Roger pirates, Buggy is a fairly capable fighter who was strong enough to survive all the battles with the Whitebeard Pirates and the extreme dangers of the Grand Line. His arrogance and greed usually gets the best of him, preventing him from fighting at his fullest. His great craftiness makes him a dangerous opponent as he will always use trickery in a fight.
While he was a considerable opponent at the beginning of the series, he became a lesser threat as more powerful enemies showed up. Finally, in the Impel Down arc, the Baroque Works members commented how weak or how much of a coward Buggy actually is. However, he is still able to survive the ordeals people far more powerful than him (albeit with their help).
One of the factors that assist Buggy in his exploits at least during the escape and the Battle of Marineford, would be his extraordinary luck. His uncanny ability to read the mood, as well as his love of theatrics and saying lines at a precise moment to strengthen the morale of his "crew" helped him secure their loyalty in furthering his plans. In addition, due to their misconceptions of his selfish actions, i.e.: running away out of fear as something to do with the death of Whitebeard and their short term partnership, as well as catching Jinbe by accident but they believed that was his plan all along, many pirates become extremely loyal to him. Most of the times they were in tears from his "heroics". He is always keen on grafting himself to the most powerful people around and bending them to his will and is smart enough to come up with battle plans on the spot this combined with his leadership skills make him an at least moderatly capable captain.
Thus proven, perhaps Buggy's biggest weapon is his cunning when it comes to speeches, the ability to easily lie and convince those around him to follow his bidding, this way gathering a crew with great strength.
Despite (or perhaps because of) his achievements coming from sheer luck and misunderstandings, he was at least acknowledged by the World Government to be strong enough, either in strength or influence, to be a Shichibukai.
Buggy has very high endurance and resilience, since he survived an explosion from a redirected Muggy Ball, with hardly any resulting injuries, while a similar Muggy Ball severely injured Minotaurus, one of the Jailer Beasts in Impel Down. He also possesses quite a great deal of physical strength, as he was able to lift and choke one of his subordinates with just one hand, lifting a Blugori easily and slamming it into the floor (although it got up again with minimal injuries) and managed to sustain the weight of both Luffy and Jinbe while floating with the upper part of his body. According to Shanks, he was also a great swimmer and was proud of the fact, but this was said before he ate a Devil Fruit and lost his ability to swim.
If anything, Buggy can at least be seen as a formidable chemist. This was seen when he was able to create a cannon ball the size of a mothball with enough power to destroy a town.
- Further information: Bara Bara no Mi
Buggy accidentally consumed the Bara Bara no Mi, a Paramecia-class Devil Fruit which allows him to separate his body parts and control them independently of each other, but robbed him of the ability to swim, which, according to Shanks (back when the two were still cabin boys at Roger's ship), he was excellent at. The abilities gained from this fruit also make Buggy immune to slashing, cutting and cleaving attacks; any such attack just separates him into his component parts, allowing him to reform as needed.
In addition, most of his body is capable of flying through the air, with enough force to send a man flying through a wall - with the crucial exception of his feet having to stay grounded. Even though the parts are separate, Buggy can still feel what the part feels; e.g. when Luffy attacked Buggy, he separated his torso from his waist, only to find that Luffy was aiming for the crotch (needless to say, this left him with a rather painful result).
Also, when Buggy used Bara Bara Festival in an attempt to take down Nami, Luffy took one of the feet and tickled it, causing Buggy to break down in laughter. No matter how much of his body he separates, something also seems to act normal; e.g., his feet walking as normal while Buggy sends the rest of his body flying. Though Buggy is a decent fighter and his Devil Fruit power makes him difficult to hit, he was constantly leaving himself open in the latter half of his match for Luffy due to distractions, resulting in many careless mistakes.
A weakness of his fruit is that if a component part is restrained, he cannot use the component part, shown by Nami when she restrained a part of his body in their first fight with him. Because he is invulnerable to cutting attacks, he could be considered the natural enemy to even the most powerful swordsmen, as seen when he easily survived Mihawk's extremely powerful slashing ability.
There are two major weaknesses of his Devil Fruit. The first is that his feet act as an anchor and must remain on the ground even when the rest of his body is airborne. Secondly, despite feeling them at all times, Buggy may lose pieces of his body if they leave his visual range, though once he can see them again he can easily guide them back.
Buggy seems to prefer bladed weapons, though he most favors the use of knives. He tends to hold one single knife at a time or three between the fingers of his hands, and can apparently perform small feats of sleight-of-hand to both store and draw them whenever necessary. Buggy seems to carry an impressive amount of these types of weapons on his person at all times; some of which he prefers to keep hidden under his gloves, or in his shoes (he throws both his legs spinning in an attempt to cut his opponent).
He was also seen using a sword in a failed attempt to cut Luffy's head off at Loguetown. Within Impel Down he initially wielded a battle-axe taken from one of the Blugori but after losing it armed himself with four katana-like weapons and a gun used by one of the prison staff.
Buggy Balls and Muggy BallsEdit
Outside of blades, he also can be seen using (or threatening to use) his Buggy Balls, which are highly explosive cannonballs carrying his Jolly Roger on them and which are fired from a cannon. The Buggy Balls are able to clear entire streets consisting of buildings. In fact, he is one of the few pirates who actively uses cannons.
In addition, he had hidden "Muggy Balls", hand grenade-like weapons derived from his Buggy Balls on himself, with decreased size, but retaining the mighty explosive powers. Until now, he has only used four of them: first against the Minotaurus prison guard, a second one on Hannyabal's subordinates (in the manga, the usage was unseen, but it was shown in the anime), a third one on Dracule Mihawk, who redirected it towards Buggy, and a fourth one in 3D2Y. Due to these weapons' small size, Buggy was able to keep them to himself while being in Impel Down without the guards discovering and confiscating them.
In their youth, both Shanks and Buggy were pirates aboard the same ship, the Oro Jackson which belonged to Gol D. Roger and his crew the Roger Pirates. When they were not fighting, the pair constantly argued over everything imaginable (in the flashback in the manga and the anime alike, they argue over whether the North or South Pole is colder). Despite the difference between them, both pirates stayed together for some strange reason while they were on board the ship. This led Whitebeard to notice and even remember seeing a "big nose" with Shanks during their battles with Gol D. Roger.
During a raid on an enemy ship, Buggy found a treasure map marking the location of a valuable underwater treasure; during the same raid, the crew retrieved a Devil Fruit: Bara Bara no Mi. Told of the fruit's value, Buggy switched the real fruit with a fake, and then ate the fake in front of the crew so he could sell the fruit, as it was worth a good amount of money.
But, while privately gloating with both the map and the fruit in his possession and preparing to take off (humorously, he is a member of the soon-to-be Pirate King's crew, quite a lucrative position, yet for some reason he wishes to seek out a separate adventure), Buggy was surprised by Shanks; he hid the fruit in his mouth, and before he could remove it, Shanks surprised him again and he swallowed it - forever losing the ability to swim, and thus also losing his chance to get the treasure underwater. This led to a bitter grudge against Shanks.
Twenty-six years before the storyline, Roger was found to have a disease that was incurable. For the next three years, Roger explored the Grand Line. Before the Roger Pirates went into battle with the Gold Lion Pirates at Edd War, Buggy was the only one in the crew to suggest surrendering. It is unknown what Buggy did during that battle, but the Roger Pirates triumphed. After Roger became Pirate King, he ultimately disbanded his crew in secret a year before his death. One by one the crew disappeared.
A year later, Buggy attended Roger's execution in Loguetown, and wept at his captain's death. Shanks, who was also there, later invited Buggy to come along with him, but Buggy refused, and the two went their separate ways, not to cross paths again for twenty-two years.
East Blue SagaEdit
Orange Town ArcEdit
Buggy then created the Buggy Pirates, who used powerful Buggy Balls, which are cannonballs with the power to take out an entire block. His first mate was Mohji the animal tamer, who used his pet lion Richie to fight, and his second mate was Cabaji the acrobat, who was a swordsman who also used deadly acrobatic tricks to fight. Buggy became a wealthy pirate with a 15,000,000 bounty, 10,000,000 worth of treasure, and a big, decorated ship called Big Top. Seeking a way into the Grand Line so she could steal from richer pirates, Nami stole the map from Buggy while he was terrorizing Orange Town.
Angry that his pirates had failed to get the map back from Nami, Buggy starts destroying random buildings in Orange Town with cannonballs and Buggy Balls. Monkey D. Luffy happened to fall into the village when Buggy shot down a passing seabird that was attempting to eat Luffy. Buggy is dealing with one of his crew after Nami got away. Buggy mishears him say something about his nose being strange. The man raises in the air via Buggy's Devil Fruit powers; Buggy orders the rest of crew to put a cannon to the man and fire. With the man killed by cannon fire, Buggy orders everyone to search the town for the thief and any treasure to be found.
Buggy is telling off his crew who believe they are about to be killed for not being able to find the thief who stole their map. Just then Nami and Luffy enter the scene to Buggy's surprise. Nami hands over Luffy and decides to pretend to join Buggy's crew; she hands over the map she stole. Buggy celebrates the return of his map of the Grand Line and Nami joining his crew. During the celebrations, Nami begins to plan her next move; she will make all the pirates drunk to make clearing them out easier. Luffy seeing the other pirates celebrating wants to join in the fun too and Nami comes over to tease him about his current situation.
Buggy suddenly appears behind her to proclaim that Luffy should die. As a demonstration, he levels a street of buildings with his cannon and powerful cannonballs. Buggy reveals he plans to use his Devil Fruit powers along with his cannons to conquer the Grand Line. Buggy then orders Nami to fire the cannon as Luffy to prove her loyalty to him. Nami hesitates to fire the cannon as she had not planned to kill anyone.
When Nami does not light the fuse on the cannon, one of Buggy's crew steps in to show her how, Nami hits him away with her staff. She claims that no matter what she does not want to become a cruel pirate since pirates killed the most important person in her life. While Nami is talking to Buggy and making her stance, Luffy suddenly notices the fuse is lit. He tries to eat the cage in desperation to get out. As the fuse burns, Nami finds herself under attack from the Buggy pirates. Nami fights the attacking pirates while Luffy continues to try and eat his way out of the cage. Suddenly Zoro appears having found Luffy at last. Buggy approaches Zoro asking him if he came for Buggy's head. Zoro attacks Buggy when Buggy states he will kill him to become more famous. Buggy is cut into pieces to the shock of Luffy and Nami, however Buggy's crew simply laughs.
Zoro stands seemingly victorious after slicing up Buggy. However, as he goes to set about freeing Luffy from his cage, Buggy's crew is laughing. Zoro suddenly finds himself struck in the side by a hand holding a knife. Buggy floats behind Zoro as he finds himself fighting the hand and boasts about his Devil Fruit powers, the Bara Bara no Mi. Zoro is injured and finds although he came to rescue Luffy, he himself now needs rescuing. While Nami is struck with shock about the whole thing, Luffy calls Buggy "Big nose" while claiming he is a jerk for striking Zoro in the back. Buggy gets angry and sends his hand out again this time to kill Luffy; however Luffy grasps the knife between his teeth. As Luffy claims he will finish Buggy, Buggy and his crew laugh Luffy tells Zoro to escape, Nami does not understand, however Zoro gets the idea of what Luffy is on about.
Zoro attempts to escape, but Buggy launches his Bara Bara no Hou. Zoro heads for the cannon and turns it over to face Buggy and his crew. Nami lights the fuse and the cannon fires at the Buggy Pirates. While the Buggy crew is down for the count, Zoro grabs the cage Luffy is in and he makes a break for it with Nami behind him. Buggy's crew begins its bearings and finds out that all three of them are gone - as well as the key to Luffy's cage. Buggy's crew is searching the town; Zoro is on top of a roof with Buggy. Buggy is angry at the three of them.
Buggy is gloating about his reputation as a pirate in front of his crew. He orders them to find Luffy, Nami and Zoro no matter what. Then Mohji steps in riding Richie, he asks Buggy if he could take Zoro out with Buggy replying he does not mind. Later, Buggy gives the order to prepare the Buggy balls; he is ready to wipe the town out. Mohji reports back to Buggy, while he is too afraid to tell Buggy about his failure, he feels he must warn him. However, he faints while he is warning him. The crew cannot make out what Mohji was trying to say, Buggy becomes aware though he is facing a tough man and attempts to hurry up the preparation of the Buggy Balls.
As Buggy has a second shot readied, the Mayor shows up and stands in the way. He makes a stand against the pirate, elsewhere Luffy, Zoro and Nami make their way to Buggy. Boodle challenges Buggy over the matter of the town. While the crew laughs, Cabaji, Buggy's second mate offers to deal with the mayor himself and leaps into the air to strike him down. Buggy steps in and tells Cabaji to hold off as the mayor challenged him directly. The Mayor's claim that the town is his treasure amuses Buggy, who only views gold and silver as treasure.
Buggy splits his right arm off and sends it flying towards the mayor. The hand grabs the mayor by the throat and lifts him off the ground, trying to get Buggy off him the mayor begins to hit his throat where the hands are. The mayor gets desperate not to die, Buggy gloats on how after this town he plans on heading out into the Grand Line and stealing all the treasures there. Nevertheless the Mayor's efforts amuse him, but Luffy appears and pulls the hand off Boodle's neck before Buggy can do anything else. Luffy decides to shout out "Hey big nose!" to grab Buggy's attention. Since Buggy hates that name, his crew, Zoro and Nami are all horrified. Buggy demands they load the Buggy balls right now. Zoro and Nami flee for cover as the cannonball heads towards them. Luffy blows himself up like a balloon and shoots the cannonball straight back at the Buggy Pirates.
Buggy and Cabaji have survived the attack from the reflected cannonball - by using the other crew members as shields. As the fight between Zoro and Cabaji rages on, Cabaji leaps into the air. Buggy throws his hand out and grabs Zoro by the foot, however Luffy steps on it preventing him for succeeding on holding Zoro. After Cabaji is defeated by Zoro, Luffy sizes up to Buggy. Buggy mocks Luffy for calling himself a pirate and desiring to go to the Grand Line. As both pirates go into the first attack, Buggy mentions the name of Red-Hair which grabs Luffy by surprise. Buggy confirms the "Red-Hair" he mentioned was Shanks. Luffy demands he tell him where Shanks is. Buggy tells him though he may know where Shanks is, however Luffy calls him an idiot for the way he said it. Buggy refuses to talk on the basis that he is not a nice guy and Luffy would die happy. Buggy then asks him if he can bounce off sharp knives, Luffy confirms he cannot.
With that, Buggy attacks, while Luffy jumps to avoid the attack. Seeing Luffy jumped, Buggy figures that Luffy is now helpless while he is in the air, however when he attacks, Luffy proves otherwise by throwing his arm to a nearby pole. As some fly knives run past him, Luffy throws a long punch at Buggy and misses. Buggy comments on how his power is also his weakness because he has now left himself open. However Luffy was not aiming for Buggy, but rather a window ledge behind him. He uses the ledge to launch himself into another attack, which Buggy dodges. Luffy ends up in the ruins of a house behind him. Nami (having stolen the treasure already) is watching the fight while some of Buggy crew decides its best to pretend to be unconscious still rather than risk being killed if they get involved. Buggy launches into another attack sending out his arm holding three knives, Luffy grabs it, but Buggy separates his hand from the attacking arm. Luffy is struck in the side of the face.
Buggy mocks Luffy thinking he is upset by his face being cut, however Luffy is mad because that last attack damaged his Straw Hat. Seeing Luffy call his hat his treasure, Buggy pulls his hand back towards him, stabbing Luffy's hat in the process with his knives despite Luffy's efforts to protect it. As Buggy holds the hat up, Luffy remembers the promise he made on the hat and runs after it. When he hears Luffy mention its Shanks's hat, Buggy throws it to the ground mentioning he was once friends with Shanks and spits on it. Luffy refuses to hear Buggy compare himself to Shanks and throws a punch at his head, Buggy separates his head, but Luffy instead hits his stomach.
Luffy is still mad that Buggy said Shanks was his friend. As far as Buggy is concerned though, he can say what he wants about the pirate. Buggy goes to separate his body, but Luffy prevents him from doing so. The Buggy Pirates lying on the ground cannot believe their captain is losing. Buggy claims Shanks is the one person who has angered him the most over the years. He then goes into a flashback about what happened. Nami is in trouble, Buggy launches his top half at her with knives ready. Just as he is about to reach her, Luffy notices his lower half has not moved at all and kicks him in the lower regions. Buggy is lying on the ground in pain; Luffy reminds him who he is fighting. Luffy tells Nami to abandon her treasures and run, but Nami refuses. As Nami claims the treasure is now hers, Buggy gets mad but Nami as a thief refuses to listen to the words from another.
Buggy then separates himself up further launching all parts of himself at Nami, except his feet which are acting as normal. Luffy spots his feet and grabs them; as Buggy continues to chase Nami, Luffy begins to torture his feet causing Buggy intense pain and discomfort. Nami swings the bag of treasure around in an attempt to attack Buggy, but Buggy grabs the treasure. Neither one of the pair refusing to let go, Buggy attempts to strike Nami to make her, however Luffy once again reminds him who he is supposed to be fighting. Buggy is knocked into the bag of treasure, ripping the bag.
With Buggy apparently defeated, Luffy grabs the map of the Grand Line. Buggy once again rises up and attempts to reform himself; however Nami has already tied up several body parts and Buggy is left with just bits of his body. With Buggy clearly defeated he is launched into the air by Luffy sending him flying far away.
Buggy's Crew: After the Battle!Edit
After losing his battle with Luffy, Buggy was separated from his body parts for a long period of time. He found himself on a deserted island, where he tried to kill a giant baby bird to eat it. However, he was eaten by the bird's huge parent, but spat out Buggy to the Island of Rare Animals because he tasted bad. There, Buggy dueled with Gaimon, but later befriended him. After leaving Gaimon's island, Buggy was attacked by a giant crab who also destroyed his Super Flashy Raft - and then saved by a mysterious, beautiful woman who turned out to be Luffy's old foe, Alvida. Learning that Alvida was looking for Luffy, the two teamed up to find Buggy's crew and then find Luffy.
The two pirates later found Mohji and Cabaji all beaten and bruised. Buggy's crew had thought that the Gomu Gomu no Bazooka had killed Buggy, so they held a funeral for him, and held onto his spare parts as a memento. Mohji and Cabaji later dueled to become the captain, but were defeated by a sleepwalking Richie. Richie was then crowned captain of the "Richie Pirates," who had left Mohji and Cabaji behind to explore the island. The four later saw the Richie Pirates being boiled in a giant pot by a cannibalistic group known as the Kumate Tribe. Reunited with his body parts, Buggy, Alivida, Mohji, and Cabaji defeated the tribe and Buggy was reunited with his crew. The pirate crew then went hunting for Luffy.
Buggy later finds Luffy at Loguetown, where he is greeted by "Oh, it's just you, Buggy." Enraged, Buggy has Cabaji trap Luffy on Gol D. Roger's execution stand. Meanwhile Mohji is sent to burn the Going Merry just in case Luffy escapes. Luffy is standing in the execution platform where the greatest pirate Gold Roger died; he is so amazed of the view. An officer tells Luffy to get down off the platform, the reason being that it belongs to the World Government, before the officer gets smashed by Alvida.
Alvida, now looking different since the last time Luffy met her, tells Luffy that he is the only man that ever punched her and that she wants him for being a strong man. Though, Luffy can't remember who she is. The Loguetown officers want to arrest Alvida for hurting a World Government officer; however, an explosion takes down the officers and Alvida shows her Devil Fruit power by making a piece of broken fountain slide through her skin. Buggy shows up and reveals to Luffy that the now beautiful lady is in fact Alvida, much to the confusion of Luffy.
Alvida confirms that she is now the Devil Fruit user of the Sube Sube no Mi and her skin cannot have any scar. Alvida reveals the alliance that she has with non-other Buggy the Clown because they share the same goal, finish Luffy. Buggy blames Luffy for the adventure he had to go through without his crew as little Buggy. Every pirate is shown and Cabaji traps Luffy in the execution platform foreshadowing Gold Roger's last moments.
The marines got report of three wanted pirates in the execution platform, one being Alvida the Iron Mace, the other being Buggy the Clown and finally Luffy. Buggy the Clown shouts that Luffy has upset him and therefore, he needs to be executed. He orders his pirates to create chaos in Loguetown for those who dare interfere. Luffy unaware that he is the one that's going to be executed tells Buggy that it's the first time he will see a real execution. Buggy tells the townspeople that they will see the live execution of Monkey D. Luffy.
Luffy tells Buggy to let him go, however, Buggy states that if somebody tries to help Luffy they will execute them. Luffy shouts that he will become the Pirate King shocking everybody present at the execution platform. Buggy is about to cut Luffy's head off when Zoro and Sanji show up to save Luffy. However, at that moment a bolt of lightning hits the execution stand, destroying Buggy's plot. Luffy then escapes unharmed due to his rubber body. Buggy then pursues Luffy with his Bara Bara no Buggy, but is caught by Captain Smoker's Moku Moku no Mi powers. Buggy's crew is then captured in seastone nets as Smoker leaves to pursue Luffy.
Buggy's crew is later freed due to the high winds of the storm knocking away the nets. Buggy decides to follow Luffy to the Grand Line.
Sky Island SagaEdit
At noon, on an unknown island, Buggy and his crew are in a cave looking for treasure left behind by a legendary pirate. Mohji asks Buggy if they are at the right place, and Buggy says that it is correct. He adds that wherever there is treasure, there are bound to be guardians and traps for it. He is saying that they must be prepared to lose their lives, when a light suddenly comes on, revealing several miners who are coming down the tunnel. Buggy, Mohji, and Cabaji start chipping away at the rock, saying that sweating is such a pleasure. However, when the boss of the miners says that the rum will taste good when they are done, Buggy explodes in a fit of rage, asking what kind of sweat he wants them to shed.
Back on board their ship, Mohji tells Buggy that they cannot find the treasure, and Cabaji tells Mohji that Buggy must have mistaken the island for another. Cabaji says that Buggy must be upset, and does not want his face to turn red, making Buggy become enraged again. Mohji says that two of the Straw Hats have bounties of 100,000,000 and 60,000,000, and they are already famous pirates on the Grand Line. Buggy says that there is nothing to worry about, and says that witches fatten the kids before eating them. Mohji then realizes that the higher Luffy's bounty is, the higher Buggy's bounty will be when he defeats him. To celebrate the intelligence of their captain, the crew decides to party until nighttime, but Alvida tells the crew not to be so noisy, and says that if they cannot take care of Luffy if they do not know where he is. Buggy tells her not worry, and when an unknown person says that he can provide information, Buggy turns to him. Buggy then realizes that he does not know who the person is, and asks of his name. The figure, who is revealed to be Portgas D. Ace, says that he was attracted by a strong scent and is sorry for interrupting the party.
Buggy asks him who he is, and that he does not care about his overly inflated ego, but some of his crew members then inform his that Ace is the infamous "Fire Fist Ace", commander of Whitebeard's second division. Ace is happy to hear that they know about Whitebeard, but then suddenly falls asleep, surprising the crew. Mohji encourages Buggy to attack Ace, saying that if he does, they will become famous, but Buggy is against the idea, saying that they cannot fight against Whitebeard's men. Buggy says that Whitebeard is the only one who tied in a fight against Gol D. Roger, and is the strongest man in the world and the one closest to One Piece. Buggy says that Whitebeard hates his friends getting hurt, and when Alvida comments that Buggy knows him well, Buggy states that when he first entered the Grand Line, he met him head-on. Ace then wakes up and says that it is cool that Buggy knows Whitebeard personally. Ace asks if it is a party, and Buggy, seeing the rare occasion, throws a big party. Ace then has Richie jump through a ring of fire. Ace later ditched Buggy for unknown reasons, but most probably to continue his search for Blackbeard.
Summit War SagaEdit
Amazon Lily ArcEdit
Buggy is later seen on a newspaper that Elder Nyon was reading, the article reported that Buggy had been captured after entering a cave he thought was Captain John's treasure hold. Unfortunately, it turned out it was a Marine Fort. He was later sent to Impel Down.
Impel Down ArcEdit
Although his crew was forced to abandon him there after their replacement captain Alvida spoke to them, he was last heard to have escaped confinement (most likely because the prison staff were not aware of his Devil Fruit powers and thus, neglected to employ seastone restrainers on him) somewhere in the prison at the same time Luffy arrives at the prison with Shichibukai Boa Hancock. Luffy encounters him on the first level of Impel Down, using his Bara Bara abilities to survive being chopped by the prison guards and declaring a truce with Luffy while in the confines. They turn around and at exactly the same time Luffy uses his Gomu Gomu Pistol and he uses his Bara Bara powers to punch a guard. Buggy tried to defeat the Blugori but failed as his attacks prove useless against the guards.
In a nick of time, Luffy defeated all of the guards which shocked Buggy himself. He also remarked on Luffy's ability comparing to the last time he met him. Luffy told him he broke in to save Ace from execution, to which Buggy expressed great shock, almost getting them noticed. Buggy initially wanted to escape himself but Luffy told him that battleships were already standing by for the up-coming war between Whitebeard and the Marines. Knowing that he would be captured once again should he escape, he decided to stay for a while. It was then that he spotted Luffy's arm band which was given by Nami. Realizing it was actually Captain John's treasure map that he was looking for, he decided to make a deal with Luffy. He would guide him to Level 4 but in return, Luffy had to give him the arm band. Without hesitation, Luffy agreed and even decided to give him the treasure in advance for helping him. Feeling guilty, Buggy was reluctant to accept the gift but still decides to take it. He planned to run away after grabbing the gift but crashed into the Gaolers room and flew out towards Level One, Crimson Hell. He then brought Luffy towards the entrance of Level 2 inside the Crimson Hell. Luffy immediately jumped into the pit hole but Buggy decided not to and instead, run away. His plans failed once again when a Blugori managed to catch up and his body accidentally tripped into the hole.
Once at Level 2 with Luffy, they came face-to-face with a creature known as the Gaoler Basilisk, a snake with a chicken head that eats whoever it can find on that level. Luffy manages to beat it though, and destroy the Monitor Room on that level. The prisoners on the level were amazed, and asked if they could be set free. Buggy did so, hoping the escaped prisoners would cause a riot, which he could use to cover his escape, but Luffy pulled him away trying to get them to continue onward. Buggy then admitted to him that he does not know how to get to Level 4 and that he lied to him about helping him get there. He was even going to reveal his plan of sneaking away during the riot, but then he realized that all the prisoners went back into their cages, leaving Buggy with an angry Luffy.
Eventually, with the aid of Mr. 3, who was one of the prisoners released by Buggy and Luffy, they managed to get to the stairway that led to Level 3 and Level 1, but it was guarded by the Gaoler Sphinx, a feathered lion with a humanoid face. However, Buggy and Mr. 3 conspired together to get up to Level 1 in order to escape, which would leave Luffy by himself, had the Sphinx not accidentally smashed the floor to pieces, which plunged Buggy, Mr. 3, Luffy and the Sphinx down into Level 3.
Upon crashing down they end up in Level 3 or "The Starvation Hell". Buggy and Luffy argue over the former's initial promise to help him find Ace. Before they could do anything, they are captured by the guards with a Seastone-reinforced net. The commander of the Blugori: Saldeath tells them there is no escape, but the Sphinx, who was captured along them, breaks the net, setting them free. Buggy and Mr. 3 tell Luffy that they are ditching him to escape Impel Down, and Buggy mockingly says "He will have drinks with him and Ace" if he manages to survive. However, to his and Mr. 3's surprise, he was only mildly disappointed and said goodbye. While trying to escape, they finds themselves along Mr. 2's cell, who is surprised to see Mr. 3 out of his cell.
Following Mr. 2's liberation from his cell, Buggy and Mr. 3 again tried to escape, only to be chased back by Minotaurus and running into Luffy and Mr. 2 again. There he unveiled his new weapon, the hand-held Muggy Ball explosives, and working together, the four fugitives managed to take the beast down.
After the battle, the four fall down to Level 4, where Luffy and Mr. 2 run off to the kitchen. Mr. 3 holds Buggy back, warning him that there are guards everywhere waiting to capture them. The two then decided to attack Hannyabal to get to the staircase to Level 3. Unfortunately, they were both easily defeated by Hannyabal, though Buggy managed to injure several guards with a Muggy Ball. They were both saved however, by Mr. 2 disguised as Hannyabal, who then told them that they needed to rescue Luffy, who was defeated by Magellan.
Buggy is later seen with Mr. 3 and a disguised Bon Kurei heading down to Level 5. Upon entering the area though, the Wolf unit showed up, intending to eat them. Just as Bon Kurei decided to fight them in order to get to Luffy, Buggy is shown running away in horror with Mr. 3. He is then shown alongside Mr. 3 on Level 2 freeing prisoners in order to cause a distraction for them to leave. Unfortunately, Magellan came to Level 2 and killed many rioters as well as sealed all the entrances and exits, causing Buggy to yell that that was unfair. Later though, Blackbeard reopened the level and Buggy and the rioters prepared to head to Level 1.
A short while later the recently revived Jailer Beasts arrive in Level 2 and start to destroy the rioters. Seeing they are no match for the Jailer Beasts, Buggy loses all hope and decided to run for it. He then quite literally runs into Crocodile. Before he knows who he is he tells him to watch where he is going but upon realizing who he just ran into, he along with Mr. 3 express great shock and terror at the revelation that he is there. He again is shocked when he sees both Luffy and Jinbe after they effortlessly defeated the Four Jailer Beasts. A short while later he is promptly kicked in the face by Mr. 2 for leaving him and Luffy in Level 5. Afterwards he accompanies Jinbe, Crocodile, and Mr. 1 in an attempt to hijack a Marine battleship. He is cheered on by the prisoners he released earlier saying he is going into battle with two Shichibukai and riding with them like equals, though his inner monologue reveals that it's more for the protection that Crocodile and Jinbe provide rather than real bravery.
However, Buggy would soon come to realize that his decision was not exactly the safest. When the Marine battleships started to fire upon the makeshift raft that the three Devil Fruit users were riding and towed by Jinbe, Buggy was the only one who screamed in terror, leading Crocodile and Mr. 1 to question why he went along with them.
When the raft crashed onto a ship, Buggy was the only one of the three who did not make a graceful entrance, but instead fainted upon impact. He remains this way until Crocodile and Mr. 1 have defeated every marine on the ship, at which point he congratulates the others on a job well done, causing Mr. 1 again to question why he was even there. Upon Mr. 2's act of sacrifice to enable the others to escape the prison, he was so moved that he was brought to tears, and even apologized for his selfish behavior during the escape.
After escaping Impel Down, Buggy was absolutely horrified to learn that the ship was bound of Marineford, even claiming that he'd rather go back to Impel Down.
However, during Luffy's Den Den Mushi conversation with a Marine officer, he discovers that he's been labeled the mastermind behind the jailbreak along with Luffy (much to the surprise of the other prisoners he was actually ranked above Jinbe and Crocodile in the escape). His past as a member of the Roger Pirates is also revealed, in addition to the fact that he was ranked alongside Shanks.
Because of this, the Marines mistakenly believe that he is of similar strength, and impressed by these revelations, many of the prisoners rally around him, even going far as to suggest a mutiny before Buggy calms them down. However, the stronger characters present aren't fooled, and Jinbe, Daz Bones and Galdino are left wondering how someone with such an impressive history could be so cowardly and weak; Ivankov simply muses that Buggy is probably the "disgrace" of the Roger Pirates.
With a new rush of confidence, Buggy uses the support of the newly-freed inmates to his advantage, declaring his intention to go on to Marineford and challenge Whitebeard himself, which would boost his reputation to unheard-of heights. Going along with the ship's surprising luck with The Gate of Justice opening, he plays along with it, pretending to be a Messiah but even wondering in his head if it's a sign from God to make him Pirate King.
He was seen alongside with the other Impel Down fugitives, falling from the sky to Marineford, in order to gain more fame. He was also seen wearing a pirate captain's attire, salvaged from different parts of a Marine officer's uniform, over his striped prisoner's outfit. He had also apparently scrounged up a number of knives, and, combined with his clothes, has mostly returned to his original appearance.
When Crocodile made his attempt to kill Whitebeard, Buggy exclaims that Crocodile tried to steal his (Buggy's) glory. He then became completely stunned when Luffy starts competing with Whitebeard in Ace's rescue.
When Admiral Kizaru fires a blast at Luffy, and Ivankov uses a Death Wink to blast him away, Buggy is seen wailing about wanting to go home. As usual of late, his desire is completely misconstrued, and the other escaped inmates from Impel Down think that he wants to kill Kizaru and ask him if he's crazy, saying that they, as his new Crew of Legends, have no fear of Kizaru. Which, as one could imagine, does not stand well with Mr. 3, who says that their ears are so full of hope that they are half-deaf. Later, when Fleet Admiral Sengoku reveals that Revolutionary Dragon is Luffy's father, Buggy is understandably thunderstruck.
Buggy then enters into a temporary alliance with Whitebeard, Buggy believes this to be because Whitebeard thinks that he is strong and that they are equals. However, Whitebeard only did this because of the amount of pirates who have sided with Buggy, and they could interfere with saving Ace if they tried to attack Whitebeard. He was then seen rallying his followers to start fighting.
Buggy was sucked into Crocodile's Sables, and then he was grabbed by Luffy's Gomu Gomu No Jet Migawari, to be used as a shield against Mihawk's sword slashes. He then fires a Muggy Ball at Mihawk. Mihawk deflects the Muggy Ball back to Buggy, making it explode on him. Luffy says: "Thank you, Buggy! I will never forget you!!!"
After a little while, Buggy is revealed to be fine, apart from some minor nosebleed and a missing tooth. He and his Impel Down subordinates stole one of the Visual Den Den Mushi and used it to broadcast a commercial about Buggy being a member of the legendary crew under Gold Roger, which prompts Sengoku to order the Marines to blast them with cannons.
When the stolen Den Den Mushi reveals to the whole world Whitebeard being stabbed by his ally Squard, due to Sengoku's master plan, to which the world mistakes that Whitebeard made a deal with the Marines, in exchange for his crew's life comes the 43 ally crews that came with him, Sengoku orders Admiral Aokiji to interrupt the transmission.
Buggy and the prisoners with him are immediately frozen by the admiral's powers. Soon after they are thawed out by the heat from Admiral Akainu's magma; Buggy is quick to swear revenge, much to the escapees admiration. He's later seen witnessing Luffy reaching the execution platform together with the prisoners.
When the Visual Den Den Mushi reactivates, Buggy restarts the broadcast. While preparing to go and claim Whitebeard's head, Buggy is seen staring shocked and perhaps angered at the sight of Ace being struck from behind by Akainu's magma fist.
Later, Whitebeard met his end at the hands of the Blackbeard Pirates thus causing Buggy to lose the honor to claim Whitebeard's head. Buggy starts to get terrified and decides to run away. His crew, however, mistakes this as an act of honor and respect for Whitebeard and follows him in tears. During his escape, Aokiji would later freeze the ocean again into a frozen wasteland, in an attempt to prevent Jinbe from escaping with Luffy. However, the solidified sea enabled Buggy foothold, allowing him to separate his upper-body high into the air and aid him in his escape.
When Crocodile launched Luffy and Jinbe into the air to get them out of Akainu's reach, Buggy unintentionally caught them in mid-air and evaded a giant magma fist. Although his rescuing were completely accidental, his crew once again believed he saved Straw Hat and the fishman intentionally and claims he's a hero. While Buggy's flying searching for a safe place in which he can land, the Heart Pirates appear with their submarine, and Trafalgar Law tells Buggy to bring Luffy on his ship. As Buggy is airborne, he is shot through his shoulder by one of Kizaru's beams. He screams in terror and throws them at the submarine and flees.
As Buggy is fleeing, Shanks and his crew arrives and Shanks tosses Luffy's straw hat to him and promises to give him a treasure map in return. He gives the hat to Law, only to return to Shanks and find out he lied just to mess with him just like the old days. As he shows his anger towards Shanks, his followers take his familiarity towards Shanks as a sign of his greatness even further and proclaim they'll follow him forever.
Buggy's crew is crying and lamenting on how much they have missed their Captain Buggy. Buggy is also crying and lamenting that he had missed them so much and was stating on how they had so much trust in him to wait for him. Alvida, comments to herself saying that those guys (Buggy's crew) had given up on him, but she is ignored. Then Mohji, Cabaji and Richie (with Mohji speaking for him) introduced themselves to the new crew of prisoners that escaped with Buggy from Impel Down.
Alvida, somewhat impressed by Buggy's actions, commented that the prisoners he brought with him were heinous prisoners with high bounties. After this, Buggy showed her Captain John's treasure mark, the one with the bracelet looking thing he got from Luffy by helping him out to go to the lower levels of Impel Down. Boasting that the wind does not blow east or west but blows directly to him. Alvida went on to inform Buggy about Luffy's current escapade in Marineford. Buggy seemed very confused after reading the paper, about Luffy's connection to Rayleigh, commenting that Rayleigh might be Luffy's uncle. At this point, Mr. 3 told Buggy that he (Buggy) has a letter from the World Government. Mr. 3 went on to read the letter and made a very surprised face, exclaiming "I cannot believe this!", while Buggy yells at him for reading it before him. This was later revealed to be an invitation to join the Shichibukai.
During the TimeskipEdit
The following events are Non-Canon and therefore not considered part of the Canon story.
When Luffy and Boa Hancock fight against Sebastian, Buggy arrives in the area by coincidence and is informed about the World Pirates from Mr. 3. Prompted by his crew, Buggy decides to let Luffy beat Byrnndi World so he can take credit for it.
Concludes non-canon section.
Buggy first appeared after the timeskip at Karai Bari Island Buggy District, celebrating Doflamingo's downfall, and wearing a cloak that made him appear much larger than he really is in conjunction with his Devil Fruit ability to split apart. He was then enraged to hear from Mohji that Hajrudin and his crew quit the Buggy's Delivery, who was too skittish to tell him it was because they had decided to align themselves with the Straw Hat Pirates, knowing how much Buggy despised Luffy.
Early One PieceEdit
Buggy was originally going to be called "Boogie". The creator of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda, saw a movie and saw that the name "Boogie" was taken. Oda quickly thought up the new name so he changed it to "Buggy".
"Boogie" was drawn in a harder, more realistic style, making him look more like a traditional 'scary horror clown' not too different from other clown-like villains in fiction such as the Joker from Batman. This is a contrast to Buggy's more rounded and cartoonish face in the final version. Buggy's red nose was also made bigger and more of an important feature on his face in comparison to Boogie, who had a normal-looking nose.
Anime and Manga DifferencesEdit
Romance Dawn ArcEdit
In the anime, it was shown that Buggy stole a map of the Grand Line from Captain Morgan's Shells Town Marine Base. One could consider this somewhat odd for him to have or want a map of such a thing considering he once was on Roger's crew and already has a fair amount of information on the Grand Line.
Orange Town ArcEdit
One of Buggy's crew members accidentally said something about his nose. Out of rage, Buggy held him up with his detached hand (though the hand wasn't shown as to hide Buggy's power until it is revealed) and fired a special Buggy Ball at him, killing him. In the anime, Buggy spares that crew member and lets him go instead.
In the manga before passing out, Mohji tries to say that Luffy is a rubber man but could not say the words completely, causing Buggy to get the wrong idea of what Luffy did to Mohji to win the fight. Buggy later throws Mohji for not properly informing him that Luffy had the power of a Devil Fruit. In the anime, Mohji tried to tell Buggy that Luffy had eaten the Gomu Gomu no Mi but could only say the word Gomu before passing out. Unlike the manga, Cabaji is the one that threw Mohji, after Mohji got angry at him for his treatment of Richie.
In the anime Buggy was informed that Luffy was in Loguetown earlier than in the manga. Buggy and his crew are seen at Raoul’s bar and Buggy is seen drawing cards when Mohji enters to tell him that he saw Luffy flying in the sky.
Impel Down ArcEdit
Also in the anime, his screentime is greatly expanded during the Impel Down arc: his canon scenes from the manga are expanded greatly, and additional all-new scenes have been added as well.
During the Marineford arc his on screen time is extended as to include comic relief in an otherwise violent and dark arc, and for the most part filler. Buggy seems less eager to take Whitebeard's head than he does in the manga. A new scene was shown in which Buggy was watching Whitebeard fight Blackbeard, with Buggy coming up with excuses of why he could not attack Whitebeard.
Buggy and Alvida comment on Luffy's actions in anime. These comments were not present in the manga.
Translation and Dub IssuesEdit
A few edits were made to scenes involving Buggy and his crew in the 4Kids dub. Firstly, during his fight with Luffy, he received a blow to the crotch area from Luffy which was altered into a kick to the shin. Other edits included general bloody edits. The two episode mini-arc involving him trying to find his body parts was also cut from final production.
His voice was also given an echo due to the power of his Devil Fruit (which is absent in the Japanese version). Evidence of this came from the his voice suddenly echoing during his flashback with Shanks after he ate his Devil Fruit. In the FUNimation dub, he is given a voice and accent similar to that of Mark Hamill's portrayal of the Joker in "Batman: The Animated Series", albeit more rough sounding. Another note is Buggy's habit of saying "flashy" often. The 4Kids dub removed this trait, however in the FUNimation dub, he does show his fondness for the word. In the English manga, he says "flashy" sometimes, but uses other synonymous words as well. (e.g. "gaudy, "magnificently", "gloriously")
