"Charlotte Linlin" has been featured, meaning it was chosen as an article of interest.
For the chapter, see Chapter 829.

Charlotte Linlin,[1] more widely known as Big Mom,[10] is the captain of the Big Mom Pirates[5] and the only female member of the Yonko.[2] She is the matriarch of the Charlotte Family,[4] which makes up the infrastructure of her crew, including herself and her dozens of children.[11] She also rules over Totto Land as its queen,[5] allegedly seeking to form it into a utopia where all the world's races can live together without experiencing discrimination or segregation.[12]

She was the last Yonko to be named; her epithet was first mentioned just after the Battle of Marineford by Eustass Kid[3] and her real name by Pappug on Fishman Island.[1] Due to her actions and intentions, she is the main antagonist of the Whole Cake Island Arc and one of the central antagonists of the Yonko Saga.

Big Mom is an enormous, heavy-set woman with a chin often hidden by her torso. She is incredibly tall, towering over the 9'1" Brook and able to hold his body in one hand. She has moderately round, orange eyes, prominent eyelashes, and wears thick purple eyeshadow. She has a very wide mouth with full lips sporting red lipstick, large, round teeth,[2] and a long, thick tongue that often sticks out. She also has long, curly, and wild pink hair that falls halfway down her back,[13] as well as a beak-like nose, and plump, round cheeks.[2] She also sports a tattoo on her left shoulder and arm, consisting of a large, standard-shaped red heart framed by thin lines curled at their bottom ends, which all tops a far smaller heart.[5]

During her first appearance, Big Mom often drools large quantities of saliva when talking.[2][14] Her pupils take on a spiral appearance when in her regular fits of rage from not having a certain food at her direct disposal or simply when extremely furious.[15][16]

Big Mom wears a large pink bicorne hat bearing a Jolly Roger on the front. She has worn two versions: the first design consisted of a standard skull with crossbones behind it, as well as large flame-like patterns to the sides,[17] whereas the current version, named Napoleon, has two crossed sabers instead of crossbones, possesses smaller lateral flame patterns, and is imbued with a fragment of her soul, causing its skull to change expressions and talk to Big Mom;[18][19] on its top, the hat is edged with a thick yellow streak, it has a strip snap-fastened to it,[20] and beneath it is a light, polka-dotted bandana fastened around Big Mom's head. Big Mom also dons a pink dress with red polka dots and white ruffles on its neckline and hemline,[21] with a wide, rippling white cape attached to its back that falls to the ground.[22] The outfit is completed with dark blue high heels, one turquoise pearl wristband on either wrist,[21] and golden, jeweled rings on all her fingers.[23]

I wonder if we can explain the situation? She is like a monster who would destroy a whole country for sweets! One of the Yonko... Big Mom!
— Minister of the Left on Big Mom[24]

Big Mom is a immensely gluttonous pirate who loves to eat sweets above all else[25] and has all the islands under her external protection pay her with metric tons of whatever kind of confectionery or pastry they can produce.[26] She is obsessed with sweets to the point of destroying entire countries for failing to deliver them.[27] In fact, she loves her sweets so much that her subordinates or her territory holds less importance compared to it.[28] Despite this, she does not lose control when Luffy claimed to have eaten all the candy that Fishman Island owed her; instead, she correctly deduced that he was lying in order to protect Fishman Island.[29] Big Mom is particularly fond of wedding cakes, as she ordered a gigantic wedding cake to be made simply as a treat to celebrate the acquisition of the technology of the Germa Kingdom after she slaughtered the Vinsmokes and even when sleeping, she would sleep talk about eating wedding cakes. According to Pudding, Big Mom will even get enraged and destroy the whole wedding hall if anyone made a mess of the wedding cake.[30] When the wedding cake was presented during the ceremony, Big Mom greatly expressed gluttonous joy and excitement to the point she salivated.[31] True to Pudding's words, Big Mom went berserk with tremendous fury to the point of killing several chefs in a fit of rage right after Luffy ruined the wedding cake.

Big Mom Eats Sweet City

Big Mom terrorizes Sweet City during one of her cravings.

In addition, Big Mom has a peculiar eating disorder where, at seemingly random times, she becomes destructively fixated on a specific food item and goes on a crazed rampage in search of what she wants to eat. While in this state, she will kill and destroy everything in her path — including her castle, her subordinates, and even her own children — until she receives the food she wants.[32] When rampaging, her pupils become crazed and swirly.[15] Once her cravings are satiated, she becomes more affable and retains no memory of her actions during her rampage.[33] Stemming from her love for sweets, Big Mom is extremely fond of having tea parties which she dearly looks forward to from the bottom of her heart as noted by Jinbe. Thus, Big Mom is extremely generous to people who attend her tea parties, joyfully offering a large variety of pastry delicacies and extravagant drinks for them to eat and drink as much as they want and can be murderously enraged if her tea parties are ruined in any way.

She is very jolly when in a good mood and enjoys celebrating the fulfillment of her ambitions with song and dance, but her cheerfulness betrays an underlying sense of malice, as she is completely unfazed by the violence necessary to achieve her goals.[34] She is also willing to completely disregard her children's wishes on marriage for the sole sake of strengthening her crew.[35] She seems to recognize others by their lineage first and foremost, as she often speaks of others in terms of their relation to their parents[36] and grandparents.[37]

When calm and thinking rationally, Big Mom possesses a rather businesslike mindset and strongly believes that a pirate must accept no compromises or delays for something they want.[38] Pappug thinks she is protecting Fishman Island with a business perspective since the deals made with the candy qualify as racketeering,[39] though she prioritizes sweets over money and treasure; she initially refused an alternative payment of treasure when Fishman Island's monthly candy tribute could not be met,[40] only accepting out of amusement once Monkey D. Luffy openly stood up to and defied her over the payment.[41][42]

This even extends to her allies and crew; should one of them choose to leave her crew or cut ties with her, Big Mom forces them to give up something precious to them as compensation, uncaring of their reason for leaving to begin with.[43] Similarly, she expects all citizens of Totto Land to sacrifice portions of their lifespan as the price of residing in her country, further illustrating her desire to be compensated for everything she provides.[44] While Big Mom does not take much interest in money and treasures compared to sweets, she does have a strong liking in collecting special treasures that are rare and legendary such as the Tamatebako,[45] as shown when she learned than an intruder broke into her treasure room, her first concern was the Tamatebako.[46]

Big Mom is also immensely selfish and obsessed with power; her marriage of Pudding to Sanji is solely for the sake of gaining access to the advanced combat technology of Germa 66,[47], a process which she is willing to repeat with all her children in order to strengthen her own crew.[35] When a marriage is threatened or annulled, Big Mom will become incredibly angry at the people responsible and aim to kill them mercilessly, even if they are her own children; the larger the power she fails to gain, the angrier she will become. This lust for power stems from her desire to overthrow the other Yonko and ultimately become the Pirate King.[48] Big Mom has some interest in the Poneglyphs despite being unable to read them, knowing they are the potential key to Raftel.[49] Another sign of her selfishness is that while she conceived Pudding with her Third-eyed father for the sole purpose of using Pudding's third eye to read Poneglyphs in order to reach Raftel, she still insulted Pudding for her third eye, as seen when she disgustingly called it creepy, and ordered her to grow out her bangs to conceal it, while being completely uncaring of her feelings. She also discarded Pound after conceiving twin daughters with him and even allowed him to be killed.

There are two things our Mama hates: bitter sweets, and tea-party no-shows. I have seen what happens to people who refuse her invitation out of ignorance. The sight of them breaking down in bitter regret is ohhh so painful to watch! A tea party invitation from Big Mom is tantamount to an absolute summons that cannot be refused! As they say, even the demons of hell dutifully attend our Mama's tea parties!
— Vito explains why people do not refuse Big Mom's tea party invitations.[50]

An extremely ruthless woman, Big Mom is infamous for destroying countries over slight infractions (though most often when they fail to make their monthly payment of sweets), disregarding any and all reasons for the failure while rationalizing that she despises people unable to keep their promises.[51] Generally, there are two things she dislikes: bitter treats, and invitees not showing up for her tea party.[52] Demonstrating herself to be very brutal, she does not forgive those who refuse invitations to her tea parties, and she will kill people precious to the absentee as a "present".[53] She does not accept excuses of any kind, even if it was given in advance, nor if the reason was as important as attending a loved one's funeral. Even after dealing such traumatizing damage to an absentee, she would still send them an invitation to the next tea party and expect them to attend, as Jigra was given one more even after Big Mom killed his father.[54] Due to her immense brutality, even Caesar, who is dangerously known for his malevolent madness, is extremely terrified of her. Big Mom particularly enjoyed killing people by taking away their lifespans, claiming it to be her favorite food. She gleefully killed Zepo in this manner and while she spared Pedro from immediate death, she took away up to 50 years of his entire life away, leaving Pedro a few short years left to live. She also tried to kill Jinbe in a similar manner and was extremely enraged that her powers had no effect on him. Though Sanji participated in the wedding due to the potential threats to those he cared about, Big Mom has no interest of attacking the Baratie and killing the head chef and Sanji's savior, Zeff.[55]

Big Mom's Malice

Big Mom's malice for those who go against agreements with her.

When it comes to dealing with enemy pirate crews, Big Mom specifically instructs her children and other subordinates to give her enemies false hope before crushing their spirits as brutally as possible.[56] Big Mom is highly confident in her power and fails to see most crews as even a remote threat due to her and her crew's capabilities.[57] Big Mom's malevolence extends to encouraging violent behavior in her children; when Anana wanted knives to cut up her stuffed animal, Big Mom immediately asked two of her sons to bring knives to her.[58] She also encourages and rewards deceitful behavior in her children, as her daughter Charlotte Pudding claims that Big Mom favors and pampers her due to her ability to lie convincingly.[59] On the occasion that she does uphold her promises and deals, if the other party fails to uphold or goes directly against their part in the agreement, Big Mom will display immense rage and will not hesitate to inflict the worst punishment upon them.[60]

Although she has no problem with having her children and subordinates attack her enemies, Big Mom will directly go after anyone who threatens anything extremely important to her, including things like her Poneglyphs and wedding cakes. Should she personally target someone, Big Mom's pride will cause her to get extremely angry if someone prevents her from attacking, pushing the obstacle aside even if it is one of her children.[61]

Big Mom has proven herself to be extremely treacherous and cunning, willing to break promises and betray potential allies to get what she wants. While putting up a fake front of desiring an alliance with the Vinsmoke Family, she has no intention of marrying off one of her favorite daughters, Pudding, to create this alliance. Instead, mother and daughter plotted together to lure the other family in to massacre them during the wedding ceremony, in order for Big Mom to acquire the Germa Kingdom's cloning technology, a feat they intend to achieve by having the kingdom parked within their territory, all the while without needing to give Pudding to the Vinsmoke family. Pudding also claimed that Luffy and Nami are not meant to leave Whole Cake Island alive either, thus showing that Big Mom was intent on breaking her promise with Sanji about sparing their lives in exchange for his cooperation with this wedding.[62] Her seeming willingness to let her crew members go in return for something they possess is also a sham, as she actually demands lifespan amounts beyond what a single person is able to give her, resulting in her killing them and also taking the lifespans of the people closest to that person.[63] Should she somehow not be able to get any lifespan, she will throw out the deal altogether and physically attack the person.[64]

Big Mom's Dream

Big Mom's dream is having all the races in her family at the same eye level.

Big Mom also desires to create a nation where all races can happily live together[12] due to wanting a "family" comprised of individuals of all races that she can dine with at eye level with via Caesar Clown's gigantification research.[65] Big Mom is so dedicated to this dream that she is willing to invest massive amounts of money in Caesar's research, even building a working replica of Punk Hazard's laboratory in the event that it was destroyed and offering more financial support after Caesar is brought to her with no results; however, her fixation on this dream rendered her oblivious to how Caesar was simply embezzling money from her for his own indulgences.[66] However, no giants live in Totto Land due to them hating Big Mom, especially after a botched arranged marriage when Lola ran away from giant Prince Loki, and Big Mom briefly became enraged when Vinsmoke Judge mentioned them.[67] Her obsession with diversity is not just limited towards her family; she also wishes to collect rare and unique animals for her own pleasure, as explained by her eighth daughter who claims that Big Mom would not be satisfied with just having all the races of the world for herself.[68]

Linlin apparently does not like to talk about things that are personal. When Judge pointed out that he did not see any giants in Totto Land, Big Mom briefly gave an angry look before claiming that he just missed them.[69] When a first time guest asked her about Mother Carmel, she furiously responded to his inquiry by knocking him out with Haoshoku Haki.[70]

She refers to herself with "ore" (おれ?), a very masculine way of saying "I", instead of the gender-neutral "watashi" (?) that most other females use.[71] Like many others, Big Mom has a distinct style of laughing: "Mamamama".[72][73][74] However, she has also laughed in a normal "Hahahahahaha" style[75][74] (occasionally with a drawn-out "Haaaaaaaa" at the beginning,[76][73]) and has even combined it with her unique laughter in the form of "Haaaaaahahamamamama".[77][78]

Big Mom has 39 daughters, 45 sons, and 43 husbands, the latter of whom are scattered all around the world.[79] From her 84 children, Big Mom also has some grandchildren, such as Capone Pez.[80]

According to Charlotte Pudding, Big Mom marries her children off in order to strengthen her own crew and does not give them a choice in the matter. In addition to this, they are fully aware of how stubborn she can be, and Pudding herself claims that most of them have already given up on their dreams of marrying someone of their own volition. However, Lola was undeterred from finding a husband of her own and left the New World to find one.[81]

While Big Mom has a lot of children, she does not put a lot of work into raising nor enforcing any moral limits to them (if anything, she encourages their cruelty). She allowed Anana to get a knife to mutilate her stuffed toys, even at the protest of her other children who told her not to encourage violent and psychotic behavior. Big Mom just brushes it off by saying that it is natural and that everyone should get along.[58]

Big Mom has proven that while she does appear to care and dote on at least some of her children, it only applies if they are obedient and do not stand in her way. When she entered one of her craving-induced rampages, Big Mom did not recognize Charlotte Moscato as her 16th son and killed him for blocking her path.[82] Moreover, she utterly loathes her disobedient daughter Lola, as her running away prevented Big Mom from finalizing a crucial political marriage that she claims would have enabled her to defeat the other three Yonko and become the Pirate King. She even desires to have Lola killed, to the point that she plans to send an assassin after her if she ever acquires Lola's current location. Her hatred for Lola even extends to Charlotte Chiffon, Lola's twin sister, simply because of their resemblance. Big Mom abused Chiffon greatly and left her with wounds that never healed, which led Chiffon to lose affection for her mother and to side with Capone Bege in his plan to assassinate Big Mom.[83] Lola, on the other hand, is unaware of her mother's hatred for her and still believes herself to be an accepted member of the Charlotte Family.[84] Notably, in stark contrast to Lola's misaimed perception of her mother, Charlotte Opera is completely aware of Big Mom's willingness to harm her own children and fears that she will kill him if she discovers that he failed to stop Jinbe.[85]

Among her many children, Big Mom appears to have favorites. Pudding is one such child, due to her tremendous acting skills and also her third eye, which has the potential to read the Poneglyphs. Pudding reciprocates this affection with loyalty to her mother, willingly putting up an act in front of Sanji and his family in order to convince them of Big Mom's commitment to their alliance. They also share a similar lust for violence, gleefully discussing the details of their plan to massacre the Vinsmokes during the ceremony.[62] Big Mom also selected a certain few of her children and appointed them Ministers within her territory, as well as further elevating Charlotte Cracker, Charlotte Smoothie and Charlotte Katakuri to the posts of Sweet Commander within her crew, showing her trust and respect for their worth and talents.

However, even Big Mom's favorite children do not completely escape her cruelty. When Pudding was a child, Big Mom ridiculed her third eye and advised her to cover it up, which has negatively affected how Pudding views herself even up to the present day. She is also quick to remind them of their place when they annoy her; when Katakuri steps in to attack Luffy before she can, she berates him as a "lowly child" and begins to scold him before he explains himself to her.

According to Cracker, Big Mom's 43 husbands mean nothing to her and considered them to be "outsiders" since they officially have no connection to the Charlotte Family.[86] She demonstrated this when she discarded Pound once she bore two daughters with him,[87] and later gave Cracker permission to kill him.[86]

Crew and Other SubordinatesEdit

Big Mom's subordinates call her "Mama" (ママ Mama?),[88][89] and most seem to be afraid of her.[90][91] So far, only Bobbin appears to be unafraid of her, even having a friendly chat with Big Mom after returning to Whole Cake Island.[92] Big Mom has scolded Tamago for being willing to negotiate over payments promised to her.[93]

To sail with or under Big Mom, new allies and enlistees must form a familial connection with the crew;[94] because of this policy, the patriarch of the Vinsmoke Family arranged for his third son to be wed to the 35th daughter of the Charlotte Family.[95] However, in the event that a bride or groom from an outside family has multiple existing affiliations, they must sever connections that are external to the political agreement; this was the case with Sanji, with Pekoms revealing that Big Mom is only interested in Sanji's status as a Vinsmoke, rather than his present membership of the Straw Hat Pirates.[96] Big Mom will not allow her subordinates to leave her service, despite claiming otherwise.[97] The roulette she uses to determine the price they must pay is rigged to ensure that the victim will die.

Individuals like Cracker and Pudding have no fear of Big Mom and are fiercely loyal to her, gloating to enemies about how untouchable she is and stating that it is suicidal to fight against their mother.[98] Katakuri will even eliminate any possible threat he senses to Big Mom as he killed Jigra once he foresaw him attempting to assassinate the Yonko.

The Homies are created by Big Mom's Devil Fruit powers; as such, they are very loyal to her.[99] She spends most of her time around her food-based homies, whom she frequently eats,[100] and while they may be afraid of death, they will not mind being eaten as long as their flavor is appreciated.[101] Despite their loyalty, homies are not above questioning Big Mom, such as when she goes on one of her craving rampages and threatens the lives of civilians and other homies.[102] This loyalty partially stems from fear, as homies naturally fear Big Mom's powerful soul[103] and will be forced to obey anyone who holds her Vivre Card since it also exudes the essence of her powerful soul, which only they can sense.[104] Out of all her homies, Big Mom seems to be most familiar with her bicorne hat, Napoleon, which acts as an adviser or informant by keeping her up to date on recent occurrences and her plans.[105] However, even Napoleon is not above questioning Big Mom, as demonstrated when it begged her to stop her senseless violence during her rampage in Sweet City.[106] Napoleon, Zeus, and Prometheus are three special Homies created from Big Mom's own soul fragments, granting them a higher level of power than other Homies,[107] and they even sleep in the same room as her, acting as her bodyguard and attacking anything that disturbs her.[108]

With her capitalist mindset, Big Mom only imparts protection upon her chosen territories for as long as they can meet the demanded candy tribute and will not hesitate to have them destroyed if they are unable to pay it.[109] Her idea of "protection" specifically offers only protection from external pirate attacks, as Pekoms stated that the local uprising on Fishman Island was none of his crew's concern.[110] The sweets produced by Fishman Island were a particular favorite of hers.[111] She refuses to give any period of grace under normal circumstances, but was willing to do so once for Fishman Island simply because she was amused by Luffy standing up to her.[41][42] Upon knowing that one of the treasures offered as compensation is the Tamatebako, a national treasure of Fishman Island, Big Mom got so excited that she decided to completely forgo the island's failure to give its monthly candy tribute.[112]

Vinsmoke JudgeEdit

Big Mom pretended to form an alliance with the patriarch of the Vinsmoke Family, Vinsmoke Judge.[113][96] Through the family, she plans to gain access to the advanced battle technology employed by its army, Germa 66.[114] In turn, Judge wants to use her forces to conquer the North Blue once more and re-establish the kingdom of the Vinsmoke Family.

Despite the "alliance", however, Judge views Big Mom as a "madwoman". For this reason, he deliberately sought out his estranged son Sanji in order to meet her demands for a blood connection to her family, as he refused to give her one of his "precious" sons.[115]

Big Mom also dislikes Judge and his family, referring to them as the "annoying leadership" of her true desire, Germa 66.[116] In fact, Big Mom never intended to form an alliance with the Vinsmoke family in the first place and planned on murdering Judge and his children from the start. Judge, for his part, also intended to effectively take Charlotte Pudding hostage after the wedding as leverage against Big Mom. As such, neither of them had good intentions for the other, which they hid under the guise of civility.

Monkey D. LuffyEdit

When she sent her subordinates to collect the monthly candy tribute from Fishman Island and called them after learning that they may not receive it, Luffy picked up the Den Den Mushi and claimed that he was responsible for the island's lack of candy. Big Mom accused him of lying and initially refused the treasure that he offered as compensation, but admitted that he had nerve for standing up to her and decided to target him instead of Fishman Island. In response, Luffy declared that he would defeat her in the New World and claim Fishman Island as his own territory because he could not leave Fishman Island under the protection of someone who would destroy it on a whim.[117] However, much later, Big Mom had discovered that the Tamatebako was among the treasures that Luffy gave to her, so Big Mom decided to show remission to Luffy as the Tamatebako was enough for her to let go of the entire matter.

Luffy's friction with Big Mom further intensified when he discovered that Sanji had been coerced into a political marriage with one of Big Mom's daughters, which would result in him leaving the Straw Hat Pirates. Knowing this, Luffy decided to sneak onto Whole Cake Island and ruin the ceremony.[118]

Although she views herself as much stronger than him, Big Mom apparently does not underestimate Luffy's strength, feeling the need to have Cracker, one of her most powerful children, aid Brûlée in dealing with Luffy's group.[119] At the same time, she seems to view him as a worthy opponent, looking somewhat disappointed when informed that Cracker would definitely defeat him.[120] Upon learning that Cracker was defeated, Big Mom's rage towards Luffy swelled as she unleashed a ferocious storm and sent an army to battle him.[121] When Luffy and Nami were captured and imprisoned, Big Mom contacted them through a Den Den Mushi and told Luffy that she was willing to let him and his crewmates leave safely due to her promise to Sanji, but threatened them to show them "hell" if they ruined Sanji and Pudding's wedding ceremony.[60] This turned out to be false, as Pudding informed Luffy and Nami that they will die along with Sanji. Unbeknownst to Big Mom, Luffy escaped capture and is currently in an alliance with Capone Bege to overthrow her during the wedding ceremony.

Big Mom was later shocked at Luffy's presence at the wedding ceremony and was enraged when he destroyed the wedding cake she was looking forward to eating before reflecting on Luffy's previous threats to her. When her second son, Charlotte Katakuri intervened and immobilized Luffy, Big Mom reprimanded him for his actions as she wanted to personally crush Luffy herself.

Vinsmoke SanjiEdit

In order to gain access to the technology of Germa 66,[114] Big Mom falsely agreed to an alliance with Vinsmoke Judge.[96] In accordance with her usual terms, she demanded a family connection to seal the alliance, so Judge offered his third son, Sanji, to be wed to her 35th daughter, Charlotte Pudding.[95][113] Because of this, Big Mom primarily refers to Sanji as "the Germa boy"[36] and has ordered her subordinates to ensure that Luffy and his team do not succeed in meeting up with Sanji on Whole Cake Island.[56]

However, in addition to his political value as a member of the Vinsmoke Family, Big Mom has great respect for Sanji's cooking skills and his pirating exploits as a member of the Straw Hats; Tamago further intimates that, if Sanji cooperates with the wedding, it is likely that Big Mom will offer him an even better position within her crew than the one he currently enjoys with the Straw Hats. Sanji, however, flat-out rejected this offer.[122]

After finally consenting to marrying Pudding, Sanji asked Big Mom to spare his friends, which she readily agreed to do as long as Sanji married her daughter.[123] However, Sanji later overheard Pudding reveal that the wedding is actually a setup, and that Big Mom's true intention was to kill him and his family and take their technology for herself. Pudding also claimed that the Straw Hats will not leave the island alive either, meaning that Big Mom never intended to keep her promise with Sanji.[62] Big Mom herself later confirms this as she discusses her plans with Pudding, mocking Sanji as she excitedly imagines his brutal death at the altar.[124] Having learnt the truth, Sanji reunited with Luffy and joined his captain's plans to crash the wedding and ruin Big Mom's plans.[125]

As a member of the Straw Hats, Nami became enemies with the Yonko, Big Mom. After Big Mom learns that Nami made friends with her estranged daughter, Lola, she demanded Lola's whereabouts so that she could send an assassin to kill her. However, Nami refused to tell her and Big Mom tasked Opera with forcing the information out of her.

Despite being enemies due to Pedro invading her territory, Big Mom developed a respect for him after the latter tried convincing her against taking his lifespan by removing his eye, causing her to not take away his entire lifespan.[126]

Sometime after the Battle of Marineford, Big Mom allowed former Shichibukai Jinbe and his crew to serve under her by having her daughter Charlotte Praline marry Aladine.[127] This was enacted in part due to Big Mom placing Fishman Island under her protection, though she allowed the Sun Pirates to generally do as they pleased. However, Jinbe is not loyal to her and is considering severing ties with the Big Mom Pirates, but worries of what Big Mom will do to Fishman island.[128] Jinbe has told the Straw Hats that he will join them once he settles his business with Big Mom.[129] When Jinbe appeared before her with important matters, Big Mom immediately assumed that he intended to leave the Big Mom Pirates[130] and, upon having her suspicions confirmed, demanded that he give up something in return.[131] The next day, it is later said in a newspaper that Jinbe retracted his intention of leaving her service. This was due to having the (correct) feeling that the roulette itself was designed for ensuring the death of those who spin it. Furthermore, Jinbe later learned that the numbers on which the roulette may land signal additional allies or friends that will be executed, along with the person who originally spun the roulette.[132]

Jinbe later fulfilled his intention of leaving Big Mom by attacking Charlotte Opera as well as freeing a captive Luffy and Nami, which he notes was an act of rebellion to which there was no turning back. Jinbe also persuaded Luffy and his friends to join Capone Bege in his plot to overthrow Big Mom at the tea party. Big Mom was angered upon seeing Jinbe at the wedding ceremony with the Straw Hats. After Jinbe officially declared his intention to leave the Big Mom Pirates in order to join Luffy's crew, Big Mom attempted to take away Jinbe's lifespan. Once she saw that her power had no effect on him due to him having no fear towards her, Big Mom was further enraged and resorted to brute force.

Capone BegeEdit

Capone Bege and his crew became subordinates of Big Mom following the Battle of Marineford.[133] In order to seal the alliance, Bege married Charlotte Chiffon and had a son with her.[80] Bege appears to be loyal to Big Mom, as he followed her orders of bringing Caesar Clown and Sanji to her[134] and even shot Pekoms for trying to let Sanji go.[135] As a result of this loyalty, Big Mom appears to trust Bege implicitly, giving him the position of "Rook" and putting him in charge of security for Sanji and Pudding's wedding.[136]

Unbeknownst to Big Mom, Bege's reason to join her was to find any chances to kill her and claim her head.[137]

Big Mom referred to Mother Carmel as everybody's "mother" in her Tea Party. It is unknown what the relationship between these two people have as even her own family are put on the dark about this. Nonetheless, Big Mom shows that she really cared about her, as she would put up her photo on the table every time she has her tea parties and she would go on a psychological rage if anyone were to just merely damage her portrait. Big Mom will also get mad if people question her about her relationship to Carmel as shown when she used her Haoshoku Haki to knock out a curious guest.

Caesar ClownEdit

Caesar's Frivolity

Caesar squandering Big Mom's money on his own hedonism.

In the past, Caesar Clown was commissioned by Big Mom[138] to research and develop a viable method of gigantification. However, Caesar quickly concluded that such a goal is impossible to achieve even for him, and each time when Big Mom asked him about his progress, he simply requested more money to help further his research, only to spend it on hedonism instead.[139] When her crew attacked the Thousand Sunny to retrieve him, Caesar begged the Straw Hats to protect him from her, fearing she would discover the embezzlement should she capture him.[140] When she finally caught up with him, Caesar managed to convince her that his research had nearly been completed before it was destroyed by Luffy and Trafalgar Law during the Punk Hazard incident, but Big Mom merely revealed that she had constructed a replica of the required facility and would continue to offer more funding for him to rebuild and finish the gigantification drug within the fortnight that Caesar claimed he needed, making Caesar fear for what could be the last two weeks of his life.[141]

Unbeknownst to Big Mom, Caesar was liberated from his servitude by Bege and is currently in alliance with the Fire Tank Pirates and Straw Hats to take her down.[142]

For an unknown reason, Big Mom is hated by every giant in the world. She once had an opportunity to form an amicable relationship with them when the prince of Elbaf proposed to Lola. However, because Lola ran away from the wedding and Big Mom's attempt to use Lola's twin sister Chiffon as a stand-in failed, her relationship with giants grew worse and she gave up trying to befriend them.[143] To this day, Big Mom will show anger when someone mentions giants around her as when Vinsmoke Judge mentioned how he did not see any in Totto Land.[144]

Upon seeing Brook, Big Mom immediately became fascinated with him and wants to capture him alive to add him to her collection.[145] Big Mom overpowered and questioned Brook as to why he was trying to steal the Poneglyph and mocked him for his intentions but Brook responded to not underestimate his crew. Big Mom defeated Brook and mocked him by petting him as the latter felt humiliated for his defeat. Big Mom held high praises for Brook's strength, calling his fighting wonderful as well as being able to injure her strongest homies for the first time.

Big Mom is extremely fond of Brook to the extent that she chose to carry the Straw Hat musician by her side like a toy instead of placing him in her library collection of rare creatures right away. Even when she went to bed at night, she chose to carry Brook in her hands while sleeping. When Brook was replaced by a skeletal lookalike, Big Mom thought he had died and cried hysterically, although she got over him at the thought of eating wedding cake.[146]

Abilities and PowersEdit

As one of the Yonko, Big Mom is one of the four most powerful pirates in the world.[147] The Gorosei has stated that she is one of the few people capable of stopping Blackbeard.[148] Even the Straw Hat Pirates recognize that she could crush them quickly and easily if they fought her recklessly.[149][150]

Through her strength as one of the most powerful pirates, Big Mom has managed to amass a very powerful crew,[151] as well as several strong subordinates such as Jinbe, a fishman and former Shichibukai,[152] and Capone Bege, one of the members of the Worst Generation.[133] She possesses considerable influence within the Underworld as well, having connections to the Vinsmoke Family, which leads the legendary Germa 66.[153] Those who marry her children automatically become part of her crew.[94]

While under Big Mom's protection, Fishman Island is protected from pirate attacks, indicating a powerful influence similar to that of the late Whitebeard.[154] She is known to destroy entire countries over sweets[27] and is intimidating enough that even her underlings Pekoms and Tamago, who are powerful in their own right, are afraid of talking to her when she is angered.[90] In fact, almost everyone, including her own children, has been shown to fear her. Ironically, this fear makes Big Mom stronger due to the nature of her Devil Fruit powers.[155]

Big Mom's overall influence allows her to gather information about the backgrounds of people she is interested in, with said information being used to issue threats and demands.[156] It is said that even demons would attend her tea parties if they were invited.[157]

Physical AbilitiesEdit

Big Mom's Physical Strength

Big Mom crushes the floor while half-asleep.

Big Mom has immense physical strength, demonstrated by her ability to climb tall buildings despite her massive size,[158] throw punches with tremendous destructive power,[159] and hurl her servants with great force using only a single arm.[160] She was also able to break through the metal door of her castle's treasure room, which even her daughter Smoothie, a Sweet Commander, could not break through, just by walking into it.[145] Even while sleeping, Big Mom easily smashed the floor of her bedroom simply to kill a fly.

Big Mom possesses tremendous durability due to her extremely tough skin, being compared by Capone Bege to an iron balloon. She is able to destroy cities, sink ships, and resist cannon and gun fire without gaining a single injury. It is said that no weapon can pierce her skin. However, it loses its toughness completely when she is in a psychological crisis, such as when someone dropped Mother Carmel's photograph that she holds dear to the point that just falling to her knees could cause her to bleed.[161]

Big Mom's Sound

Big Mom releases a shrieking cry.

Big Mom also has the mysterious ability to emit a unique sound when destabilized psychologically. The voice was said to cause all those around her to cover their ears, making them defenseless.[162]

Devil FruitEdit

Main article: Soru Soru no Mi

Soru Soru no Mi Infobox

Big Mom removes her son's lifespan.

Big Mom has eaten the Soru Soru no Mi,[163] a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows her to manifest the soul of whomever she touches into an ethereal substance. She can grab hold of this substance and extract it from the victim, taking away their lifespan by an amount of her choice and absorbing it into herself. If taken at a sufficient number, it will kill the victim.[164] However, this ability has no effect on anyone who does not fear her as Big Mom was unable to take away Jinbe's lifespan because he showed no fear towards her.[165]

She can put harvested souls into non-living things in order to give them life or into animals in order to give them human abilities. Those creatures are named Homies. This makes her power similar to the Kage Kage no Mi. However, unlike the user of the Kage Kage no Mi, she cannot put souls into dead corpses or the body of another human. She can also create incarnations of her own soul that will complete the task of collecting souls.[166]

Weather ControlEdit

Big Mom's Weather Powers

With her Devil Fruit powers, Big Mom used fragments of her own soul to create two special Homies called Zeus, an animated thundercloud which she summons with her left hand, and Prometheus, a miniature sun which she can summon with her right hand. Together, the two enable Big Mom to unleash destructive explosions and storms as a manifestation of her rage. It is said that when Big Mom unleashes their power, there is nothing that can stop her rage.[167]

Further information: Haki/Haoshoku Haki

Big Mom possesses Haoshoku Haki.[162] She was first seen using it at Sanji and Pudding's wedding to knock a man out for questioning her relationship with Mother Carmel.[168]

42 years ago, Linlin gave birth to her first child, starting her family and earning her the epithet of "Big Mom". Throughout the years, she gave birth about once a year, with some of them being multiple births, eventually having 85 children from various husbands.[169]

Big Mom had sought to become Pirate King and reach Raftel even before the Great Age of Pirates. Over 24 years ago, Gol D. Roger managed to read Big Mom's Road Poneglyph, allowing him to beat her to Raftel. Intent on becoming the next Pirate King, Big Mom placed her hopes on her 35th daughter Charlotte Pudding, who was descended from the Three-Eye Tribe, to awaken her tribe's special ability to help read the Poneglyphs.[170]

Eighteen years ago, Big Mom gave birth to decuplets.[169]

When Elbaf's Prince, Loki, proposed to Lola, Big Mom found an opportunity to quell her strained relationship with giants. She arranged an important political marriage between Lola and Loki, one that would enable her to forge an alliance with Elbaf and achieve the means of defeating the other Yonko and becoming the Pirate King by the use of the kingdom's famed army. However, Lola escaped from the arranged marriage against her mother's will. Big Mom then tried to use Lola's twin sister, Chiffon, as a substitute, but that plan failed and her relationship with giants grew worse. Big Mom then gave up trying to befriend the giants and decided to focus on making artificial giants instead. To that end, Big Mom commissioned the rogue Marine scientist Caesar Clown to research Gigantification so she could turn her family into giants. Meanwhile, Big Mom's rage towards Lola over running out on the political marriage even extended to Chiffon, who she would treat cruelly time and time again because of her resemblance to Lola.[84][171]

Five years ago, the Nox Pirates entered her territory, seeking the Road Poneglyph, but her crew crushed them. As a punishment, she had Zepo, a Nox Pirate, spun the Roulette Wheel to determine how he and Pedro would be punished, and it landed on 100 years of lifespan being removed. Big Mom removed Zepo's lifespan, who died instantly since he only had 30 years left to live. She then prepared to take 70 years of Pedro's life, but Pekoms' pleading convinced her to reduce the years lost to 60. Pedro then took out his own left eye to show Big Mom his determination to return to Zou alive. Out of respect for his spirit, Big Mom decided to take 50 years of Pedro's life.[172]

During the TimeskipEdit

After the Battle of Marineford and the death of Whitebeard, Fishman Island was once again vulnerable to pirate attacks and to the slave trade. Big Mom decided to protect it in Whitebeard's place, but demanded large amounts of candy as payment, thus leading to the Candy Factory's creation.[154] The Sun Pirates would also ally with her crew for protection due to Jinbe having resigned from his position as Shichibukai.[152]

When Snack was defeated by Urouge during his attempt to invade her territory, Big Mom created a storm in a fit of rage.[167]

During one of her tea parties, someone unintentionally made Mother Carmel's picture fall from its chair. In response, Big Mom started to emit a shrieking cry that stunned the assembly, and unleashed Haoshoku Haki waves, making the guests collapse one after another. Out of psychological shock, she fell on her knees, scraping them and injuring herself for the first time in a long time.[173]

Fishman Island SagaEdit

Fishman Island ArcEdit

After the Straw Hat Pirates and the Ryugu Kingdom defeated the New Fishman Pirates, Big Mom sent two of her subordinates to collect the monthly candy tribute, unaware that the factory had been destroyed in the fighting. Excited for an upcoming tea party at which she anticipated eating the candy from Fishman Island, she asked some unseen invdividuals if they were also excited, only to subsequently eat them while saying they could continue being excited in her stomach. Afterward, Bobbin returned from destroying an island that had failed to make its monthly candy tribute and reported that everything had gone up in flames. Pleased by this, Big Mom commented that the baked sweets from that country were delicious and that the island must have smelled wonderful as it burned down. Upon learning that Fishman Island might not be able to make their monthly payment, she demanded that a call to be made to the island at once. Pekoms and Tamago were too nervous to answer when the call went through, so Monkey D. Luffy answered it instead. When Luffy claimed that he had eaten all ten tons of the candy meant for her tribute, Big Mom accused him of lying, but Luffy insisted that he spoke the truth and offered her their treasure as compensation. As an offended Big Mom declared she would only accept candy and that she could not eat treasure, Tamago informed her that Eustass Kid had recently sunk two of their ships and the crew was in need of money to cover the damages, which meant they should accept the gold and allow Fishman Island two weeks to recover and make new candy. Though she further insulted by the suggestion due to her belief that pirates should not compromise, Big Mom admitted that she had become interested in Luffy and decided to shift the target of her wrath from Fishman Island to Luffy alone. In response, Luffy decided that it was too dangerous to leave Big Mom in charge of Fishman Island and declared that he would defeat her when they meet in the New World before announcing his intention to claim Fishman Island as his own territory, utterly infuriating Big Mom.[174]

Yonko SagaEdit

Zou ArcEdit

Sometime after Sanji and his group arrived at Zou, Big Mom and Sanji's father arranged a political marriage between Pudding and Sanji[95] in order to unite the bloodlines of the Charlotte and Vinsmoke Families.[96]

Whole Cake Island ArcEdit

Big Mom's Preparation Celebration

Big Mom and her underlings sing as they plan Sanji and Pudding's wedding.

Three days before the tea party, Big Mom oversaw the wedding preparations. As she sang and danced with her underlings, she looked forward to the wedding and revealed that she knew of Luffy's presence in her territory.[34] At some point, she assigned Cracker the job of dealing with him, feeling the need to be thorough with his removal.

Some time later, Big Mom suffered from a severe craving for croquemboche and went on a rampage in search of it, eating anything in her path. As she tore through Sweet City, her 16th son tried to calm her down, but she ended up killing him in a blind rage by taking away his lifespan. Suddenly, Jinbe arrived and stopped her by giving her the croquembouche she desired. After she calmed down, Big Mom thanked Jinbe for the poneglyph he had delivered earlier, only to grow serious and question if Jinbe planned on severing their alliance when he mentioned that he had something to discuss with her.[175] Later, after Jinbe explained his desire to leave her crew, Big Mom did not care about his reason for doing so, but was greatly displeased by the loss of manpower this would cause and demanded that he give up something in return as she brought up her punishment roulette wheel.[97]

Big Mom Commissions Caesar

Big Mom gives Caesar two weeks to make a gigantification serum.

When Caesar Clown was brought to her castle a day later, Big Mom asked him about his gigantification research before revealing that her dream was to create a huge family consisting of all the races of the world and gigantify them using Caesar's research. Caesar claimed that it was progressing but had been hindered by Luffy, Trafalgar D. Water Law, and the destruction of his lab on Punk Hazard, so Big Mom provided Caesar with a new lab and gave him two weeks to complete his research.[176]

On the next day, Big Mom was informed by her hat, Napoleon, that they would soon be welcoming the Vinsmoke Family for the exchange of wedding presents. After being told that the wedding cake's production was on schedule for the wedding day, Big Mom asked about the status of Luffy's team and was assured that Cracker would deal with them, seemingly disappointing her, before being informed that the last two Vinsmoke children had arrived at Whole Cake Island.[105] Later, she received a report that Smoothie and Katakuri had reported in, and she wondered where Cracker was, unaware that at that moment, he was crashing into the wall of her chateau after being defeated by Luffy.[177]

Big Mom and Vinsmoke Family Meeting

Big Mom and Pudding have lunch with the Vinsmoke Family.

After learning of Cracker's defeat, Big Mom had Zeus and Prometheus generate a massive storm and dispatched an army to deal with Luffy. After the Vinsmoke Family arrived at her castle, Big Mom welcomed them and had tea with the Vinsmokes and Pudding.[178]

Sometime after the lunch meeting, Big Mom had a conversation with Sanji, who requested that she allow his friends to leave Whole Cake Island in exchange for him not running away. Big Mom stated that as long Sanji complied with the wedding, she would be willing to overlook Luffy's transgressions against her.[123]

Big Mom Shows Vinsmokes Her Collection

Big Mom shows the Vinsmokes her collection of rare beasts.

Later, Big Mom showed the other Vinsmokes her collection of rare beasts, but was angered when Judge pointed out the lack of giants among the population. After being informed that Luffy and Nami had been captured, Big Mom spoke to them via Den Den Mushi and revealed she would let them go if they did not interfere with Sanji's wedding because the apparent presence of the Tamatebako in the treasure they had given her was enough for her to forget about the candy Luffy ate. However, when Nami revealed that Lola is alive and gave her Vivre Card to Nami, Big Mom flew into a rage and recounted how Lola running away from her arranged marriage prevented her from becoming the Pirate King, which prompted Luffy to declare that he would pick a fight with her again and get Sanji back, much to her chagrin.[179]

Big Mom hung up and refused to pay Luffy any mind despite his defiance because she would get her hands on Germa 66, the Tamatebako, and some wedding cake on the next day, which prevented her mood from souring. However, Napoleon reported that someone was causing a ruckus by the Hall of Treasures, and Big Mom was enraged at the thought of someone attempting to steal the Tamatebako.[180]

She later went to the Room of Treasure and busted through the door. Upon seeing Brook, Big Mom immediately became fascinated with him.[145] She then easily overpowered Brook with Zeus and Prometheus by her side, and inquired as to why Brook was going after the Poneglyphs and not Sanji. Brook replied that Luffy was going after Sanji, and the Poneglyph retrieval mission was so they could achieve something even if Sanji did not come back with them. Big Mom stated that there may be bigger things, like death, on the line, but Brook replied that death was never taken into consideration.[181]

Big Mom captures Brook

Big Mom captures Brook.

Big Mom eventually defeated and captured Brook, but after failing to find any copies of her Poneglyphs in Brook's clothes and cylinder, she lost her anger and caressed him affectionately. She recounted her desire to use Pudding to read the Poneglyphs and be the next Pirate King just before Pudding came into the room. Big Mom asked if Pudding had awakened her abilities yet, which an exasperated Pudding denied. Pudding then asked Big Mom if they could talk in private.[170] Big Mom and Pudding went to the Queen's Chambers, where they discussed and went over their plan to assassinate the Vinsmoke Family.[182]

Soon afterwards, Big Mom went to bed and fell asleep with Brook in her arms. She spotted a fly nearby while half-asleep, causing her to smack it with extreme force. Tony Tony Chopper then snuck up to Big Mom in order to free Brook from her grasp, but sneezed. Thinking Chopper was the fly, Big Mom smashed her hand into the ground again. She then started tossing and turning while dreaming about wedding cake, preventing Pedro from retrieving Brook, but causing her to drop the latter onto the ground. However, Brook made a startled scream when Nami went to retrieve him, causing Big Mom to wake up. Thinking the noise was still from the fly, Big Mom threw Prometheus at Nami and Brook. However, the Straw Hats managed to escape from her bedroom, replacing Brook with a skeletal lookalike.[183] Big Mom picked up the fake Brook from the ground, while still sleeping.[184]

Sanji & Pudding's Wedding

Big Mom excitedly begins the tea party.

After waking up the next morning, Big Mom cried in grief when she thought Brook died. However, she quickly cheered up when Prometheus and Zeus reminded her about the wedding cake.[185] When the guests arrived and the tea party began, Big Mom arrived at the venue and greeted the guests.[186] During the tea party, Big Mom was presented with Mother Carmel's portrait, to her glee. A new guest asked about the significance of Carmel, causing Big Mom to get angry and knock him out. The emperors of the Underworld then presented their gifts to Big Mom, and an excited Big Mom chose to open them along with the Tamatebako after the wedding ceremony. The wedding ceremony later began, with Sanji and Pudding being flown in on Zeus.[187]

As the exchange of vows was about to commence, Streusen presented the wedding cake, and Big Mom praised him for his work. She soon watched as the Vinsmokes took their seats, with a look of anticipation at their imminent deaths. However, she soon witnessed Pudding collapsing to her knees after Sanji called her third eye beautiful. She was angered at this sight wanting her daughter to carry out the plan. Big Mom signaled the priest to do it, but Katakuri was aware that Sanji would evade the shot and attempted to kill Sanji himself. Unfortunately, Sanji dodged that shot and Big Mom asked Katakuri what happened to Pudding, but the latter told her that something was about to happen. The wedding cake began to rumble and several clones of Luffy burst out shouting at Big Mom, who was in disbelief at this turn of events.[188]

Big Mom Attacks Jinbe

Big Mom attacks Jinbe as he goes against her.

With the wedding cake ruined, Big Mom was enraged and demanded the chefs to make another cake before taking away their lifespans in a fit of rage. She then searched for the real Luffy as she reflected on the previous threats Luffy made to her. After finding the real Luffy, she summoned Zeus and Prometheus to her side and prepared to attack the Straw Hat. However, Katakuri intervened and attacked Luffy himself. Big Mom then scolded her son for interfering with her business, but he then informed her of Luffy's objective in destroying the photo of Carmel, which greatly shocked her. Jinbe then appeared and officially declared that he was leaving the Big Mom Pirates in order to join Luffy's crew. In response, Big Mom attempted to take away Jinbe's lifespan. However, her power had no effect on him because Jinbe showed no fear towards her. Further enraged, Big Mom resorted to brute force as she prepared to attack Jinbe with Prometheus.[189]

Translation and Dub IssuesEdit

In One Piece Green: Secret Pieces, Linlin's epithet was romanized as Big Mom. However, in Chapter 610, her name was romanized as Big Mam.[190] Later, in Chapter 651, her name was again romanized by Oda as "Big Mom" when Sanji was fantasizing about her appearance.[191]

Support AppearancesEdit

Sanji imagination Big Mom

Sanji's fantasy of what Big Mom looks like.

  • When Tamago stated that the sweets-loving Big Mom was a female pirate, Sanji imagined her as an attractive redhead.[191]
  • Brook believes that Linlin earned her epithet of "Big Mom" because she is the matriarch of a family of 129 people who are scattered across the world.[192]
  • She shares her name with the real-life pirates Charlotte Badger and Charlotte de Berry, although in their case Charlotte is their given name.
  • Similar to Kaido, the real appearance of Big Mom differs considerably from the silhouette shown during Monkey D. Garp's explanation of the Yonko. Unlike her early silhouette, she has a rounder nose and rounder teeth. However, this may have been due to changes in her appearance over the timeskip or because her character design was not yet complete.
  • While the Big Mom Pirates, and Totto Land as a whole, seem heavily inspired by fairy tales and fantasy fiction, Big Mom in particular shares traits with several characters from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland novel:
    • The Queen of Hearts with their extreme selfishness, their similar appearances (obese, bulbous nose, and a very wide grin), abnormally size, and the way they dress. They both also have the tendency to order the decapitation of others.
    • The Hatter with their obsession with tea parties.
    • The Duchess with their insane mood swings, oversized head, ugly face, and treating their children, and anyone else they see as subservient to them, in ways convenient only for themselves.
  • During Big Mom's rampage through Sweet City due to craving croquembouche, she climbed a tower, roared, and waved her other hand in rage, similar to the famous actions of King Kong.
    • Her rampaging for sweets is similar to the children that were experimented on by Caesar Clown at Punk Hazard during their candy rehab. It was later discovered that Big Mom was the one who ordered and financed that experiment.
  • She is the second known female pirate to possess Haoshoku Haki, the first being Boa Hancock. However, Big Mom is the first female actually shown using it.
    • In addition, both Big Mom and Hancock are the main antagonists of their respective arcs (Whole Cake Island arc and Amazon Lily arc).
