[edit] About
His name is believed to have been derived from the fact he was Portuguese (Bartholomew the Portuguese). Much of his early life is unknown (including his date of birth), however he was active between 1660s until the 1670s. He was one of the earliest foreigners to operate outside of Jamaica. [1]
He is best known as a founder of the pirates codes along with other pirates including Henry Morgan that was referred in the Disney movie Pirates of the Caribean. Later the code was used by the pirates of the seventeenth century such as John Phillips, Edward Low, and Bartholomew Roberts.
He successfully escaped capture on a number of occasions over his career and his name held a infinite number of murders and robberies upon the Caribean coast. The last recorded information on him was that his ship was sunk off the coast of Jamaica, after which Portugues faded from history. [2] His days as a buccaneer were never successful and he is forever remembered as a failure. Even the exquelin was reported to have been unimpressed by his career at the end of his life. [1]
[edit] One Piece
It is unconfirmed, however Ace's surname "Portgas" may be play on Bartholomew Portugues' name. However, Ace shares little in comparison so far with Portugues beyond the name, like many of the pirates in One Piece.
